Council’s Road to IELTS provides candidates

Does using Road to IELTS improve a candidate’s score? 

We looked at the average scores of 130,711 learners who had 

access to three units of Road to IELTS for a period of a month, 

prior to taking the test. The findings, left, show that:

• There is a direct correlation between usage and improvement. 

• The candidates who used it the most improve by as much as 

64% on their initial score in a given area. This figure probably 

relates more to familiarisation with test types than language 

improvement.

their final years at school and first year 

in higher education. It provides 

comprehensive coverage of skills and

The new version, published in 2011, 

has been comprehensively enhanced 

and extended based on feedback from 

the hundreds of schools and universities 

already using Study Skills

Learners find it extremely useful to practise 

pronunciation as a self-study activity. 

They can repeat activities as many times 

as they like, and can make mistakes without 

embarrassment. And in class, an ICT 

resource provides a teacher both with 

consistent pronunciation models, and 

with interactive activities to keep all 

students focused, and to keep interest 

levels high. 

So, what will they learn in Clear Pronunciation 

1 (Sounds)? 

This program helps learners recognise 

and pronounce the sounds of English. It 

covers 43 phonemes: vowels, consonants 

and diphthongs. Students learn by 

watching videos (there are more than 50), 

through working with audio clips (there 

are over 1,000) and through recording 

and listening to their own voice, using the 

integrated Clarity Recorder. 

Each of the 25 units in the program contrasts 

two sounds, for example head/had, 

there/dare, hair/hear. The activities present 

each sound independently, in the context 

of individual words (in initial, middle 

and final position), in sentences and in 

discrimination activities. 

Learners then meet the target sounds in 

a real-world context. They might listen to 

someone describing a photograph, a 

child singing a nursery rhyme or the 

repeated vowel sounds in movie titles 

(for example the diphthong in Trading 

Places and Snakes on a Plane). 

The final activity is a randomised IPA test 

where learners refine and test their knowledge 

of phonemic symbols. This enables 

them to use phonemic transcriptions in 

dictionaries – a vital skill.

In Clear Pronunciation 2 (Speech), students 

learn to put the sounds of English 

together in natural speech. This program 

helps them recognise and accurately

So, how does it work? First, a teacher

Most teachers love reading, but it can be 

a challenge to generate the same enthusiasm 

in our students. This is exactly what 

Clarity's Active Reading sets out to 

achieve. 

The starting point is to present texts 

which are relevant, stimulating and lively.

MindGame is a virtual boardgame which 

combines language learning with pure 

strategy. Learners can play against each 

other or against the computer: the object 

of the game is to capture all your opponent's 

pieces and make them your own. 

To capture each piece you have to 

answer a language question. 

Each session has a different theme, ranging 

from familiar vocabulary and grammar 

areas such as irregular simple past forms, 

to homophones, anagrams and chatroom 

slang. As students capture, lose 

and recapture squares, questions are 

repeated, and this is remarkably effective

Clarity’s Practical Placement Test is a 

quick, convenient and economical tool for 

placing students at their approximate 

level of English. The test is in four parts: 

vocabulary, grammar, listening and selfassessment. 

The first three are built from 

item banks of multiple choice and gap fill 

questions. Question selection is random 

(within certain parameters), so that each 

test is different, increasing security, and 

effectively eliminating copying. 

The listening section tests not only the 

ability to hear and recognise utterances, 

but also the communicative intent. The 

self-assessment section at the end 

refines the scores students have 

achieved in the earlier sections by asking 

them “can do” questions based on the 

Common European Framework of Reference 

for Languages. The result is a 

single score placing the student in one of 

six bands, from Beginner (A1) to 

Advanced (C2). 

The test is administered online and can
