Feedback on Road to
IELTS from teachers and
students was very positive.
They found it user-friendly.
They liked the way they
could test themselves and
get the answers and marks.
They also liked being able to
repeat exercises if they
needed to. They found the
subjects of the exercises very
useful and relevant to the
exam.
Martin Barge
Learning Centre Manager
Bell International, London
It’s so much easier for candidates to do
well in an exam if they know exactly what
to expect. This is where the British
Council’s Road to IELTS provides candidates
with a unique advantage. It
includes 120 hours of intensive work on
vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and
speaking, helping them to develop their
skills to the levels necessary to succeed
in the IELTS test.
And, crucially, the program simulates the
exam itself, enabling candidates to view
videos of the Speaking test, and to practise
against the clock. The Listening section
includes timed academic and social
listening activities. Reading activities are
based on an impressive array of authentic
texts, with extracts from The Economist,
New Internationalist, the British
Medical Journal, and many more.
One of the challenges of IELTS preparation
is enabling learners to interpret and
describe charts and tables. Road to
IELTS includes a wealth of these graphics
in more than 70 individual exercises.
The program includes detailed explanations
of each question type in each part of
the exam, and tips on how best to tackle
the tasks.
The units are organised thematically,
using topics commonly found in the
IELTS test. The first six units familiarise
the student with the basic exam format.
Units 7-9 consolidate, using more complex
content, and the last three units use
combination activities which are very similar
to the actual exam.
Give your candidates a real advantage
with Road to IELTS!
Does using Road to IELTS improve a candidate’s score?
We looked at the average scores of 130,711 learners who had
access to three units of Road to IELTS for a period of a month,
prior to taking the test. The findings, left, show that:
Road to IELTS score %
• There is a direct correlation between usage and improvement.
• The candidates who used it the most improve by as much as
64% on their initial score in a given area. This figure probably
relates more to familiarisation with test types than language
improvement.
Language area studied
• As the Listening, Reading and Writing activities are closely
modelled on the tests in IELTS, it is reasonable to conclude
that Road to IELTS really will help learners to perform better in
the IELTS test.
Access UK, developed by the University
of York, is a video-based, interactive
language program that prepares
international students for the whole
range of situations they may face in the
UK. This includes a visit to the doctor,
sorting out visa problems, disputes
with flat mates, personal safety in a UK
city... it’s all essential input for a smooth
transition to UK campus life.
The program focuses on language and
guidance, with a particular emphasis
on the spoken skills, and on vocabulary
needed for practical and social situations.
Challenges such as making
friends, walking home late at night or
dealing with a theft are illustrated in a
series of video scenes which progress
to interactive activities. Filmed in and
around a UK university, the video gives
learners access to authentic English
and genuine situations, and the opportunity
to bring this to life through active
viewing.
You can make Access UK available
pre-departure so that students arrive
with a solid grounding of the skills
they need, or post-arrival to help them
settle in and prepare for their course.
The program comes in two versions:
1. The Self access version
comprises interactive
activities including video
and audio for students to
work on in their own time
and at their own pace.
(Available as Anonymous
Access licence)
2. The Classroom version
additionally includes
teacher’s notes and
downloadable worksheets.
(Available as Learner
Tracking licence)
Access UK is aimed specifically at the
experience of students in higher
education, and is therefore also useful
in preparing students who are in their
final year at school or who are doing
pre-sessional courses at language
schools. Please contact Clarity to trial
Study Skills Success is for students in
their final years at school and first year
in higher education. It provides
comprehensive coverage of skills and
resources that will enable learners to
approach their academic studies effectively
and with confidence.
The new version, published in 2011,
has been comprehensively enhanced
and extended based on feedback from
the hundreds of schools and universities
already using Study Skills
Success. It includes a focus on key
skills highlighted by lecturers as being
a particular problem:
• developing critical thinking
• participating in seminars and
giving presentations
• learning to learn independently
Each unit begins with a video introduction
where a teacher explains a
challenge learners will face. (For
example, in the Reading unit: "No
matter what subject you study, you’ll
have a mountain of books and articles
to read...".) The video also shows
students giving their own views based
on their experiences. The unit then
takes learners through a series of
teaching points and interactive activities,
helping them to develop the skills
and strategies they need to meet this
challenge.
There is extensive use of authentic
texts: articles, websites, book extracts,
a BBC lecture... In addition, learners
can download worksheets for use
away from the computer.
Study Skills Success is ideal as a self
access resource or as integrated classwork
or homework components of a
taught course, where it can (optionally)
be delivered through Blackboard,
Moodle or other VLEs.
Learners find it extremely useful to practise
pronunciation as a self-study activity.
They can repeat activities as many times
as they like, and can make mistakes without
embarrassment. And in class, an ICT
resource provides a teacher both with
consistent pronunciation models, and
with interactive activities to keep all
students focused, and to keep interest
levels high.
So, what will they learn in Clear Pronunciation
1 (Sounds)?
This program helps learners recognise
and pronounce the sounds of English. It
covers 43 phonemes: vowels, consonants
and diphthongs. Students learn by
watching videos (there are more than 50),
through working with audio clips (there
are over 1,000) and through recording
and listening to their own voice, using the
integrated Clarity Recorder.
Each of the 25 units in the program contrasts
two sounds, for example head/had,
there/dare, hair/hear. The activities present
each sound independently, in the context
of individual words (in initial, middle
and final position), in sentences and in
discrimination activities.
Learners then meet the target sounds in
a real-world context. They might listen to
someone describing a photograph, a
child singing a nursery rhyme or the
repeated vowel sounds in movie titles
(for example the diphthong in Trading
Places and Snakes on a Plane).
The final activity is a randomised IPA test
where learners refine and test their knowledge
of phonemic symbols. This enables
them to use phonemic transcriptions in
dictionaries – a vital skill.
Clear Pronunciation 1 is the ideal tool
for enabling your learners to master the
phonemes of English, helping them to
speak clearly and with confidence.
Intonation
In Clear Pronunciation 2 (Speech), students
learn to put the sounds of English
together in natural speech. This program
helps them recognise and accurately
produce word stress, sentence stress,
consonant clusters, connected speech
and intonation. By the end of the program,
learners have a comprehensive understanding
of the key features of English
pronunciation.
So, how does it work? First, a teacher
clearly explains and illustrates each topic
in a video. Learners then listen to audio
clips, identify the target pronunciation
feature and practise repeating it. The integrated
Recorder enables users to record
their voice and assess their pronunciation
against a native speaker. If they want to,
they can save their recordings as MP3
files, and monitor their progress over time.
Thus far the activities are very controlled.
But Clear Pronunciation 2 also exposes
learners to the target elements of pronunciation
in real-life speech. For example,
learners watch a video about the 2012
Olympics, listen to a pop song, and
watch a series of 32 unscripted interviews.
Clear Pronunciation 2 includes a wide
range of speakers: male and female;
young and middle-aged; English, Scottish,
Australian, New Zealand, North
American, Chinese, Indian. Learners are
therefore exposed to the variety of
accents they should expect to encounter
in real life.
This program is ideal both for classwork
and as a self-study resource. Enjoyable,
interactive and challenging, Clear Pronunciation
2 is the perfect tool for helping
your learners to recognise and produce
the features of natural speech in
English.
Learners listen to how
words link in a song
Most teachers love reading, but it can be
a challenge to generate the same enthusiasm
in our students. This is exactly what
Clarity's Active Reading sets out to
achieve.
The starting point is to present texts
which are relevant, stimulating and lively.
Topics range from advertisements for
diets to Internet posts on wireless gaming
to ecotourism. Text types include
newspaper and magazine articles, emails,
poems, recipes, stories and press
releases. There’s lots of variety, and
topics to appeal to every learner.
The program focuses on the complete
range of reading skills and subskills, from
skimming and scanning to topic sentences,
prediction and inference. It also
helps learners develop their vocab strategies
and, vitally, it encourages them to
develop the reading habit. For a list of
reading skills covered, see below.
Active Reading intelligently integrates
reading with other skills. A text on fashion
leads on to an activity where learners
create their own advertisement for a
watch; a unit on recipes takes students
online to research recipes from different
countries. This means speaking and writing
are key ingredients in each unit. And
learners can listen to a range of native
speakers reading the texts, helping them
to identify sense groups and develop
their chunking skills.
The program comes at six levels from
Elementary to Advanced, with ten units in
each level. Each unit starts with a video
introduction, moves through controlled
practice and comprehension exercises
and concludes with a freer activity which
expands on the topic. Active Reading
can be used for classwork, homework or
self-access. The program integrates with
Results Manager enabling teachers to
track student progress and generate
reports.
Help your students learn to love reading –
with Active Reading!
The students loved working
with Active Reading and not
just for the initial lessons
After the evaluation lessons I
gave them the opportunity to
explore some of the other
units. All students took advantage
of this and stayed on
task, even when they were not
given a specific focus.
I have found Tense Buster
a most excellent teaching
tool! The students who have
they are really beginning to
Tense Buster helps learners improve
their understanding of key grammar
areas from Elementary level right through
to Advanced. The program is ideal as a
self access resource, or integrated into a
course of study and used for classwork
or homework.
Each unit begins with a presentation
based on a dialogue, newspaper article
or radio broadcast, where learners are
encouraged to form theories about how
the grammar works. Next comes a grammar
rule where they can confirm or
correct their theories. Learners then
move on to a variety of practice activities
in which the language is contextualised
and key aspects of form and function are
highlighted.
Activities provide detailed explanatory
feedback to help learners understand
where they went wrong, so they can
avoid making the same mistakes in future.
They can also see and listen to correct
answers.
Tense Buster includes video-based
pronunciation activities, each related to a
different aspect of grammar. The
program includes listening and speaking
activities, and learners can generate tests
on single or multiple grammar areas from
a test bank of more than 1,600 items.
And on completing a level, they can print
a certificate — a great motivator!
Tense Buster has been adopted by the
British Council worldwide, Ministries of
Education in many countries, and thousands
of schools and colleges.
To conclude, this is a
an enjoyable environment.
Colin Livingstone for Schoolzone
MindGame is a virtual boardgame which
combines language learning with pure
strategy. Learners can play against each
other or against the computer: the object
of the game is to capture all your opponent's
pieces and make them your own.
To capture each piece you have to
answer a language question.
Each session has a different theme, ranging
from familiar vocabulary and grammar
areas such as irregular simple past forms,
to homophones, anagrams and chatroom
slang. As students capture, lose
and recapture squares, questions are
repeated, and this is remarkably effective
in helping them learn the language
items. Above all, MindGame is a fun and
effective way of helping students learn
important language items.
MindGame is popular worldwide with
students and has been adopted by the
wilderness, education, languages and
immigration. Each theme is introduced
through videos.
The topics come at four levels, each one
building on the learner’s existing
knowledge of English, whilst encouraging
them to expand their skills through a huge
range of activities. Students learn a
comprehensive set of skills, including
listening, reading, writing, vocabulary,
spelling, grammar, pronunciation and
giving opinions – all of which will help
them to communicate effectively in the
real world.
In addition, there is an integrated, comprehensive
Teacher Tracking Module.
Teachers can choose to have learners
log in, and then track each individual or
class activity, with times and scores.
which enables you
Results Manager integrates with Clarity
programs, enabling teachers and administrators
to see exactly what their students
have done, when they did it, how much
time they spent and what scores they
achieved.
So, how can Results Manager help you?
Student management. You can organise
your students into groups (e.g. year
groups and classes) so you can allocate
tasks and generate group reports.
Login options. Results Manager allows
you to decide which students can use the
program (making sure you get the best
use of your licences) and how they log in,
e.g. name and password.
Reports. The central function of Results
Manager is to provide reports on student
activity. You can generate three main
types of report.
1.
2.
3.
Student reports focus on the activity
of a single student.
Group reports focus on the performance
of all the students within a
group, additionally providing summaries
and averages.
Content reports display the performance
of all students who have
attempted specific activities.
CEF levels.
Clarity’s Practical Placement Test is a
quick, convenient and economical tool for
placing students at their approximate
level of English. The test is in four parts:
vocabulary, grammar, listening and selfassessment.
The first three are built from
item banks of multiple choice and gap fill
questions. Question selection is random
(within certain parameters), so that each
test is different, increasing security, and
effectively eliminating copying.
The listening section tests not only the
ability to hear and recognise utterances,
but also the communicative intent. The
self-assessment section at the end
refines the scores students have
achieved in the earlier sections by asking
them “can do” questions based on the
Common European Framework of Reference
for Languages. The result is a
single score placing the student in one of
six bands, from Beginner (A1) to
Advanced (C2).
The test is administered online and can
be used pre-course from home, or, more
securely, in your centre. Results are delivered
through Results Manager (see
above).
In 2009 teachers at Abu
Dhabi Men’s College used
Author Plus to create a brand
new resource: i-Read. This
program is designed to provide
reading practice in a local,
culturally-sensitive context.
i-Read has proved extremely
popular with students, and won
the coveted Nikai Award for
Teaching Innovation.
No publisher can meet the needs of all
teachers and all students, and that’s
where Author Plus comes in. This
program enables you to create your own
interactive activities, aimed at your
students’ exact needs, and to deliver
them on a network, online or through
your VLE. The program is easy to use,
both for teachers and learners, and has a
wide range of exercise types including
multiple choice, gapfill, proof reading,
text reconstruction and drag and drop.
As a teacher, you have complete control
over the content, and over the years
teachers have made exercises for business
English, vocabulary, listening and
reading practice, and exam preparation.
You could start by turning the paperbased
exercises you have created in
Word into interactive reading, speaking,
writing and vocab activities. Author Plus
includes an image bank and enables you
to add your own graphics, audio and
video files, and to link to PowerPoints
and websites.
The program provides detailed teacher
support: a full colour manual, context sensitive
help and tutorials, so it’s really quick
and easy to get started. You can also use
Author Plus to add to and adapt Clarity
content programs such as Tense Buster,
bringing them directly in line with the interests
and learning needs of your students.
Author Plus has been used to create all the programs below.
