Shipshewana Welcomes Home Miss Indiana Shelli <strong>Yoder</strong><br />

Miss Indiana 1992 - m8do tourism second fiddlo<br />

for a day as hundreds of local residonts turnsd out<br />

to wish the Z3-year-old well in her upcoming bid for<br />

tlre Mies America crown. It wss her first return<br />

home sinco winning tho state title juet over a weok<br />

ago ln Michigan City.<br />

Rqrorters from around the region, including<br />

television etations in gouth Bend and Fort Wayne,<br />

converged on Shipshe lor a glimpse of the emslltown<br />

girl's homecoming, Dreesed in her white'<br />

sequined evening gown from the stat€ competition,<br />

thelti entorod the spottght in classic stylo, leading<br />

a small family parado while seated in a white horse'<br />

drawn csrriago driven by liver;rmen in toppers and<br />

tails.<br />

Though Shelli's beon tied up with other oornmitmsnts<br />

sincs th6 stste pageant, newe of her urin has<br />

the town in a stir. As of this morning, Linda <strong>Yoder</strong><br />

of Rainbow Travel Agency i:n Shipshe has two lull<br />

bueee chartered to take local eupporterg on a twoday<br />

trtp to Bttend th6 Miss America pageant 8ept.<br />

19 in Atlantic City. She's also booked four couples<br />

to fly out.<br />

A ba,rbecue - with chicken at $5 e hslf - is set for<br />

July 18 st the Shipshewana Austion. Tickets are<br />

available at Pierre Morsn Mall and at numeroug<br />

Shipshewana stores.<br />

All proceeds will go to the Shelli <strong>Yoder</strong> Mies<br />

Americs Account recently set up et Shipshewana<br />

State Bank. Anyone wanting to make a direct contribution<br />

can do so at any SSB bra,nch.<br />

Carol Barhmen, executive director of the Miss<br />

Elkhart County pageant and one of Shelli's primary<br />

advieers, estimsted that more than $3o,ooo<br />

will be noodod to finance Shelli's run for the national<br />

crown.<br />

Wsrdrobo, professional coaching for voice and<br />

int€rvlew skills, snd re-arrangsment of thelli's<br />

music ar€ among numerous expenses. She added<br />

th&t Sholli hss teken s leave of absence from her job<br />

in order to put all her efforts during the next eevorsl<br />

w6€ks into pursuing the dream of becoming<br />

Indiana'e first Miss Americs.<br />

her gucceesor Wodnesdsy evening at Elkhart Elks<br />

I-adge 425, During a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.,<br />

Jennifer Mann will be crowneil Misg Elklart<br />

County 1892.<br />

in lgte August to wish Shelli well in Atla^ntic<br />

Peter <strong>Yoder</strong>, son of Jacob <strong>Yoder</strong> of Ler'risburg, PA<br />

(1783-1854), was in clinton Co, PA as of the 1840<br />

census. He rnarried Eve Best, and moved to Stephenson Co'<br />

11. He bought 80 acres in Dakota Township Jul Lo, 1848'<br />

and later served as the first village president of<br />

Dakota Vi1lage. Eve died, and he rnarried as his second<br />

wife Mrs. Eliza A EIIiott Apr 23, 1865 in Freeport, IL'<br />

Research by Mr and Mrs Terry <strong>Yoder</strong>, 8242 Potter Rd,<br />

Davison, MI 48423 has added the folfowing information:<br />

rrwe found Eve Best <strong>Yoder</strong>s wi]I in the clinton county<br />

court House. she died in Stephenson co, rL, but the will<br />

was in PA. Possibly because Peter <strong>Yoder</strong> owed his<br />

father-in-]a$/ Peter Best estate noney and he was unable<br />

to pay it back. Eve was stj.t1 al-ive when her father died<br />

in 1857, but di.ed before the estate was settl-ed'rr Peter<br />

Best (1,778-l-857) rras narried to Maria M. Haver<br />

(1784-1865).<br />
