I recently bought a book "The Ball Cousins" byMargaret B. Kinsey. In that book the marriage of Martha Eppenheimer toWilliam Yoder is documented.Martha was a relative of Joseph Ball who had left a large sum of money atthetime of his death. He had no will, so the lawers traced down all hisrelativeof which one was Martha Eppenheimer. In 1858 DeSelding District ofColumbiaDeed, filed by Charles DeSelding, lawer, showed the marriage and that theylived in Lancaster PA. Dotterer, who is engaged in the grocery and general merchandisebusiness at No. 1755 Centre Avenue, Reading, Pa., was born in Districttownship, Berks county, Dec. 26, 1861, and is descended from (I) MathiasDotterer, the emigrant ancestor of the family, through (II) Mathias (2),(III) Daniel, (IV) Mathias and (V) David.(I) Mathias Dotterer, whose name of the passenger list is given asMattheus Dotter, came to America on the ship "Jacob," Captain Adolph DeGrove, from Amsterdam, last from Shields, England, qualifying atPhiladelphia, Oct. 2, 1749. On the same ship were Nicklaus and MartinDotter, who may have been brothers, or sons over sixteen years of age. Hisson, Mathias (1744-1827) was about five years old at the time, and becauseof his tender years his name would not appear on the passenger list.(II) Mathias Dotterer, son of Mathias, born Jan 22, 1744, became a pioneerof Lower Berks county. His name is variously spelled Dotterer, Dottero, and Toderrow. On the red sandstone that marks his grave just south of theHill Church, is the following inscription " Mathias Dotterer, son ofMathias and Catharine, Born Jan 22, 1744, Died June 30, 1827, aged 83years, 5 months and 8 days." His wife is buried at his side, her gravebeing marked by the following inscription "Anna Maria, daughter of Adamand Catharine Imbody, and wife Mathias Dotterer. She was born May 17,1743, married 1765, and lived in holy wedlock over sixty years. She had 2sons, 26 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren at the time of her death, which occurred Feb. 24, 1825, aged 81 years 9 months and 17 days." Theyhad two sons: Daniel was executor of his father's will (on record inGerman in Will Book 6, p. 99) ; and Mathias.(III) Daniel Dotterer, son of Mathias, was born July 4, 1766, and he diedSept 13, 1844, in the seventy-ninth year of his age. He lived in Earltownship, where he owned a farm, and he also owned a tract in Rocklandtownship, bequeathing the latter to his son Henry in his will made Oct.29, 1834. This will, probated Oct. 14, 1844, is on record in Will Book 9,p. 18: Executors, his son Mathias and Daniel. In the Will Index his nameis spelled Daniel Dottero. He married Barbara Muthart (born June 28, 1763,died Dec. 3, 1843) and their children were: Mathias, John, Daniel (1792-1840), Jacob, George, Henry (who was given the tract of land in Rocklandtownship), Susanna, Catharine and Margaret (whose will, made Dec. 5, 1865was recorded Dec. 10, 1866).(IV) Mathias Dotterer, son of Daniel, was born in 1787. He engaged infarming in Washington township, where he owned a 114-acre tract, now inthe property of M. G. Gerhard. His death occurred in 1871, and he wasburied at Hill Church. He was twice married. His first wife, CatharineMuthart, born Dec. 21, 1799, died Aug. 23, 1834. Mr. Dotterer married(second) Catharine Herb. He was the father of fourteen children: Isaac,David, Jonathan, Aaron, George, Joseph, Israel (had three children), John,Mathias, Abraham, Henry (1825-1856), William, (1825-1903), Anna (m. EdwardAnthony, of Dale, Pa.) and Catharine (m. William Schoenly, of Boyertown).(V) David Dotterer, son of Mathias, was born in Washington township in1823. He was early trained to farming and followed that calling as long ashe was engaged in active labor. He received his education in the payschools taught by German teachers, and he can give interesting accounts of

his early experiences. He taught school at Weikel's Hill, the school beingheld in a spring house. He owned two farms in Washington township, one ofsixty-five acres and one of forty. He is now making his home with his sonJames near Heydt's schoolhouse. He married Magdalena Heydt, daughter ofJohn and Magdalena (Weller) Heydt. She died in 1896. Their children were:James, who lives in Washington township; Mathias H.; John, on a farm nearSassamansville; and Manasses, who died in 1905 at the age of thirty-five.(VI) Mathias H. Dotterer, son of David, was reared upon the home farm, andeducated in the public schools and the Keystone State Normal School. Atthe age of eighteen years, he began clerking in the store at Hill Church, for John Dotterer, and later he clerked for J. P. Geschwindt, in Longswamptownship, and after that he was employed in a similar capacity by WilliamF. Seidel, at Bowers Station. In 1885 he entered the mercantile businessfor himself, at Bechtelsville, where he conducted a general store fortwenty years. He was very successful, and the people of the town showedhim high esteem. He was one of the organizers of the borough ofBechtelsville, and was its first justice of the peace. He also served asschool director for three terms. He was elected treasurer of the boroughmany terms, and upon his removal from the borough resigned. In April,1906, he sold out his stock, good will and fixtures to William R. Yerger,of Friedensburg, (who later sold to William A. Henry), and that springmoved to Reading, where enjoyed a rest until the following October, whenhe opened a grocery store at No. 400 South Fifteenth street, his presentlocation. He carries a fine line of groceries and fresh vegetables, andhis stand is justly popular. In politics, Mr. Dotterer is a Democrat. On Nov. 29, 1884, he marriedTorinda Gerhard, daughter of Daniel and Eliza (Angstadt) Gerhard, ofLongswamp township, and they have four children: Winfield S., a bookkeeperat Reading; Raymond A., clerking for his father; and Lloyd J. and Viola M.- - - - - - - - - - -BB- Joseph Yoder b. c1809 MD m. MinnekadusaLodge No. 192 AF and AMtheFort Niobrara NebraskaFort Niobrara was established in 1880 as the military post forRosebud Reservation in Dakota. This reservation was constitutedin 1870for Chief Spotted Tails band of Brule Sioux, and, in the summerof thatyear the Indians began moving from the old Spotted Tail AgencyonWhite Clay Creek to the new location about hundred miles east.campSheridan, which had been the military post for the Spotted Tailagency, was abandoned and much of its equipment and supplied brought totheRosebud. An official army order dated April 22 1880 provided for theestablishment of a military post for the new reservation. thislocationchosen was a point on the Niobrara River in Cherry Co. aboutfour mileseast and north of the present town of Valentine. The post wasnamedForst Niobrara and the first officer in charge was Major John JUphan ofthe Fifth US cavalry and Company B of the Ninth infantryaccompaniedhim to aid in establishment of the Fort. The first buildings were of adobe brick a suitable clay forwhich wasbound nearby. Later, frame structures were erected and the fortenlargedto provide quarters for a regiment. The military reserve too, wasincreased to provide quarters for a regiments. The militaryreserve too ,was increased until it comprised fifty four sections of land. The plan of theFort followed the same general pattern of the other frontierpost, in thearrangement of its buildings around a rectangular parade ground.A visitor to Fort Niobrara in 1884, fours years after itsfounding, wrote

that the post was "Like a Plesant little village of nicely builthouses, mostof them of adobe brick and arranged on three sides of a square.Theofficers homes on the south side, all cottage houses, but largeandhandsomely built. On the east are Public buildings, chapel, library, lectureroom and entertainment hall. Along the north are the soldiersquarters andin the rear are various utility buildings and the stables , onefor the grayand another for the sorrel horses about one hundred of each, andalsoabout seventy mules. In the early days of Fort Niobrara the surrounding territory wasnot yetsettled and the garrison found it a lonely spot. For the firstyear mail andsupplies were brought by ox team freighting wagons. from Neligh,Nebraska at that time the end of the line of the Fremont,Elkhorn, andMissouri Valley railroad and the closest rail point. By 1882,however, theroad reached Thatcher only a few miles away and the followingyearcame to Valentine.,This ended the supply problem except for local hauling fromValentine tothe Fort.To the Eary settlers of the county the military post proved atremendouslyhelpful asset. Here they found a ready market for grain, hay andcordwood, as well as for meat, dairy and poultry products. wives ofsettlerstoo, helped out the family budget by doing laundry for thetroops. And,probably more important than these direct benefits was the Senceofsecurity which the presence of the soldiers gave, and theknowledge thatthe fort would be a place of refuge in the event of and Indianoutbreakfrom the Rosebud Reservation over the Dakota line to the north.Butthere was no trouble with the Brule Sioux. However, after theturbulentplans wars of the 1860's and 1870's civilians and soldiers wereunderstandably nervous and Indian scares based on unfoundedrumorscropped up occasionally. It was reported that more than once thesoldiersat Fort Niobrara had kept their horses saddled for days at atime ready torepel and attack that never materialized. Not until the winterof 1890-91

was there real trouble anywhere in the Indian country.Glimpses of social life at the fort are Given in her book,VanishedArizona, by Martha Summerhays, wife of First Lt. John SummerhaysofEight Infantry who was stationed there in 1887-88. Experienceswithbitter cold weather are detailed together with reminiscences ofthebrighter side, as for example, she wrote, We could not complainof ourfare, however, for our larder hung full of all sorts of delicateand deliciousthings brought in by the farmers, which we were glad to buy.Parriechickens, young pigs, venison and ducks, all hanging to be usedasdesired. And again: We had an excellent amusment hall with a fine floorfordancing. The chapel was at one end and a fairly good stage atthe other. We had a good string orchestra of twenty or more pieces and aseries ofweekly dances were inaugurated.Musicales and theatricals were also given by talent recruitedamong thepersonnel of the post. Admission was charged to raise funds tobyscenery and other supplies for the productions and theneighboringfrontier towns of Valentine came riding and driving over theParrie andacross the old bridge of the Niobrara River, to see the plays.Fort Niobrara, because of its remote location, had few notedvisitorsfrom outside. As at all army posts the garrison underwent manychangesin both officers and enlisted men. As a young lieutenant John JPershingwas stationed there for a short time in 1891 following theWounded KneeMassacre. Another young lieutenant at the post on the Niobrarawas JohnM. Stotsenburg who served as colonel of the First NebraskaRegiment inSpanish American War and was killed in action during thePhilippinecampaign. In 1890 the last great Indian scare came to Northern Nebraska.Throughthe exciting years events built up reaching a climax in the socalled Battleof Wounded Knee. The Sioux on the great Pine Ridge Reservationdissatisfied and hopeless, robbed of adequate rations byunscrupulous or

incompetent agents and greedy contractors, turned in desperationto anew fanatical ritualistic religion. This was the Gost Dance-Messiah craze.Of the total Indian population at Pine Ridge only acomparatively smallnumber participated. But the timid agent became alarmed andasked formilitary protection, intimating that the Indians were out ofcontrol. When this word came, the alarm spread like a Parrie fire amongthescattered settlers on the North Nebraska frontier. The Militarypostswere alerted and supplied and reinforcements were rushed to themandpreparations made for any eventuality. Fort Niobrara became oneof theprincipal points of supply and troops from the post were orderedto thefield. Then, on Dec 29 on Wounded Knee Creek, 1890, during the processofdisarming Chief Big Foots band, which comprised the bulk of theGhostDancers, a shot was fired at the soldiers, troops of the SeventhCavalry, and the fight was on. Partially disarmed the Indians had nochance and theengagement became a massacre in which men, women and childrenwereindiscriminately shot down while fleeing up the ravines seekingsafety.Following the Wounded knee affair rumors spread that the wholeSiouxnation might rise in revolt. The Nebraska National Guard wascalled outand sent to various points along the Dakota border, andadditional federalToups sent in. But beyond a few minor skirmishes there was nofurthertrouble.Gen. Nelson A Miles was put in charge of the whole operation andunderhis direction the situation gradually calmed down. After the excitement was over, Fort Niobrara returned to itsusual peacetime routine until abandonment in Oct of 1906. With the openingof theRosebud to settlers it was felt that the need for a post at thatlocation wasno longer in existence. A 16,000 acre tract of Militaryreservation wasretained for a national game preserve and the rest thrown openforsettlement. A small Museum and office bui8ldings of the gamereserve are

maintained on the site of the old post and small herds ofbuffalo, elk, deerand antelope roam over the terrain where cavalry horses onceheld sway.___________________________________________________________________CI- Jospeh Yoder ( - ) m.Anna Kempf ( - )CI1- Anne (1849 Crogahn, Lewis Co., NY- 1909 Fairbury, Livingston Co.,Il)m. 1867 Michael Farney (1843 New Bremen, Lewis Co., NY-1916 Fairbury)Had 13 children between 1868-1890CI2- Lena (1852 Crogahn, Lewis Co., NY- 1919 Fairbury, Livingston Co.,Il)m. 1871 Joseph Farney (1842 New Bremen, Lewis Co., NY-1923 Fairbury)had 17 children between 1872-1895- - - - - - - - -CJ- Descendants of Mathaus JETTER"I think the other Dotterer line, that of George Phillip Dotterer, linkstothe Yetter / Jetter line you speak of.
