Hutchinson, Kansas is internationally recognized for the Kansas Cosmosphere space and science museum and is home to the only underground salt museum in the western hemisphere. Hutchinson is in the Arkansas River Valley. It is an agricultural community, with diversified family farms growing primarily wheat, corn, grain sorghrum and alfalfa. Along with the Kansas State Fair, Hutchinson has hosted the 2002 US Women’s Golf Championship. The 2006 US Senior Open Golf Championship was held at the Prairie Dunes Golf course. Hutchinson is about forty miles northwest of Wichita, 500 miles from Denver, 400 miles from Des Moines, 200 miles from Kansas City, 300 miles from Sedalia and 230 from Oklahoma City. OOPS... CORRECTION TO SPRING HEARTBEAT In the Spring issue there was a mistake in the Ft Worth Junior Show Results. Emory Allen had the Champion Hampshire Ewe, which was later chosen as the Reserve Supreme Ewe of the Show. The ewe came from Barton Club Lambs. Congratulations Emory! Courtney Hamps AMPSHIRE HEARTBEAT IN MEMORY OF JAMES R. BARNETT Hugh R. Barnett was born April 21, 1922, in Brookings, South Dakota, to Ray E and Mabel Barnett. He died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at his farm home near Brookings. Hugh attended country school and graduated from Brookings high school in 1940. He attended SDSU for a bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry in 1948, and went on earn a master’s degree in swine nutrition in 1951. On June 18, 1952, he married Rita Lyle in Elk point, South Dakota. Hugh farmed in Brookings County all his life. He raised sheep for over 70 years and was active in many FFA and 4-H sheep shows. Hugh was the director for the North Central Wool Growers, a member of the South Dakota Sheep breeders Assn., and was involved in a ram test group sponsored by the SDSU Sheep Unit. Survivors include his wife, Rita Barnett of Brooking and seven children. IN MEMORY OF JAMES A. FARRIS James Albert Farris, 50, husband of Donna Martin Farris, father of Jaclyn Marie Farris and Jayme Alexandra Farris, died Sunday, April 20, 2008. He was a lifetime resident of Winchester, KY, born April 29, 1957, to David and Rebecca Farris. His love of horses and farming started as a child when he raised ponies and showed Tennessee Walking and Quarter Horses with his siblings. James was active in FFA and Chorus at George Rogers Clark High School where he graduated in 1975. He continued his love of horses by breaking Thoroughbred yearlings at Claiborne and Stone Farms. He later was farm manager of Hill n' Dale Farms in Lexington, Kentucky. As an employee of Hagyard, Davidson, & McGee he worked as a Pharmacy Technician. At the time of his death, he was employed by the Keeneland Association as Stable Office Manager. In addition, he was a lifelong farmer and prominent sheep breeder. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kentucky Walking Horse Association Past President, Clark Co. 4-H Council Member Past President, Clark County Extension District Board Member Vice Chair, Clark County Extension Council Board Member, Clark County Ag Development Council Member, Clark County Youth Livestock Club Member, Past President, Clark County Fair Board Member, Chair sheep and swine show, District Sheep and Goat Show Committee member, Chair of Extension Facility Building Committee, 4-H Volunteer, Kentucky Sheep and Wool Producers Association member.
