wide based. We felt he was the most complete ram of the
PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
WARREN FINDER, AHSA President
Hello AHSA Members:
Spring sale season was tremendous, with quality animals
from top to bottom. I was able to attend both of the Hampshire
Regional Sales and the National, plus a few others. The
sales were strong, but probably varied more than the last couple
of years. There definitely was a quality offering available
for all buyers.
Bring on the State Fairs, they’ll be in full swing by the time
you read this and I hope the shows are as good as they usually
are. The Eastern Regional Hampshire Show is at the Big E
this year on September 13th. Kent Spilde will be judging the
Hampshires. There will be an open and junior exhibitor show.
Check it out at www.thebige.com.
The Western Regional is at the Kansas State Fair in
Hutchinson, Kansas. Hampshires show on September 10th
with Steve Reid judging. The Frank Gilmore family has added
premium money for the show. The complete schedule isn’t finalized
yet, but there is rumor of a barbeque at the Finder
Ranch the night before the show. I’ll let the wife know you’re
coming! Several things are still in the planning stages. We plan
on have a good time and hope to get a good turn out. You
can watch for details and the complete schedule at
www.kansasstatefair.com.
Junior exhibitors who are showing futurity ewe lambs,
make sure you get your point record froms turned in. Don’t
miss out on some of the prize money we set aside for the futurity
program!
I’ve had several calls this spring concerning promoting
Hampshire more with production records. The wether sheep
or club lamb market is red hot for the Hampshires. The frame
type sheep are as much in demand as any breed. We certainly
want to keep both of these markets going, but we also have to
promote the Hampshires to the commercial producer with
facts and figures to help keep them in business.
Many breeders use growth rate and feed efficiency in their
selection process now and have been for years. Corn at $7.00
a bushel and alfalfa over $200.00 a ton make these traits even
more important for the commercial feeder.
A good record keeping system on the farm is the starting
point for knowing how fast and efficient your lambs are gaining.
Another good program to consider is the various ram test
stations around the country. There are a number of them open
to anyone that wants to participate. We plan on putting this information
together and having it in one of the next issues.
AMPSHIRE
HEARTBEAT
Enough for now, I have to get back out to the barn. We
started hauling manure this morning and I’ve been writing this
in between loads. The wife should have the spreader full by
now. She sure likes that new fork she got for her birthday.
Good Luck at the Fairs!
F.Y.I. CONTINUED
KANSAS STATE FAIRTOHOST
WESTERN REGIONAL HAMPSHIRE SHOW
The Kansas State Fair will host the 2008 Western Regional Hampshire
Show and the National Natural Colored Wool Growers Association
(NCWGA) show on September 8, 9 and 10.
The Hampshire show will be Wednesday morning September 10,
2008, thirty minutes after the Suffolk show is completed.
The NCWGA show starts at 8:00 am Wednesday September 10,
2008. The complete judging schedule is listed below. The premium list
will be available online in early April at www.kansasstatefair.com.
Open sheep must check in between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm Monday
September 8, 2008 and will be released following the exhibitors meeting
4:30 pm September 10, 2008.
Alex McClure, sheep superintendent, believes these two national
events should complement each other and bring new exhibitors to the
fair. There are classes for the major “down” breeds plus an All Other
Breeds Class.
Steve Reid, Houstonia, MO will judge the Hamps and Suffolks.
Henry Shultz, Centralia, MO will judge Shropshires, Southdowns,
Dorsets, Montadales, the NCWGA, and All Other Breeds.
The Hampshire show is dedicated to the Frank Gillmore family:
Phyllis Davison, Wichita, KS and Tom Gillmore, Lincoln, NE. Frank’s
grandchildren are adding four hundred ninety-five dollars in premium
money to the show.
Frank Gillmore was a life-time sheepman, shearer, showman, and
friend of 4-H. He and his wife Viola, had four children: Ralph, Richard,
Phyllis, and Tom.
AMPSHIRE
HEARTBEAT
Frank showed Hampshires for more than fifty consecutive years at
the Kansas State Fair. He also showed and judged at many other state
and county fairs.
Ralph was not as active in the purebred sheep industry as the rest
of the family, but was a big supporter of Phyllis and her sons. He attended
a lot of ball games and sheep shows and always enjoyed visiting
with the other sheep people.
Richard was a fixture at many of the Midwest and western shows,
you expected to find him in the same location from year to year, from the
early 60’s until his untimely death in a one-vehicle accident in 1998.
When you were showing you looked for Richard to be close to the
top in any class. He judged state and county fairs from the Midwest to
California and Oregon. He judged many times at Louisville.
As a shearer, he had good tallies, and stayed until the job was done,
but his pride was doing a smooth job with minimal nicks on the sheep.
Phyllis has been active fitting and showing all of her life. She spent
many years fitting and showing them for Frank, and now has the Gillmore-Davison
Hampshires and the LaRosh-Davison Dorsets. Her husband
John, farms in the Valley Center, KS area.
Frank and Vi’s youngest son Tom has earned fame as a fitter, showman,
judge and shearer. He helped Frank and Phyllis with their sheep for
many years and is a part of the various events, mostly as a judge.
This will be the second year in the fair’s new sheep, goat and swine
building. The building has over 700 pens, new sheep and goat wash racks,
lots of light and abundant electrical outlets. The building includes four
offices and restrooms with showers. Camping is available on the grounds.
Entry fees are $7.00 per 5x5 foot pen. Parking passes and discounted
ASI SUBMITS NOMINATINS
FOR THE AMERICAN LAMB BOARD
(July 1, 2008) In a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer,
the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) provided a slate of nominees
for consideration for appointment as producer-directors of the
American Lamb Board (ALB).
David Trotter (Ind.) and Fred Pugh (N.C.) were put forward for the
producer category representing 100 head of lambs or less. In the more
than 500 head of lambs category for producers, Leo Tammi (Va.), David
McEwen (Mont.) and Wesley Cude (Texas) were submitted as nominees
for the board.
“I believe you will find the slate provides a full opportunity to appoint
experienced and dedicated producers who have served their industry
at the local, state and national levels and who meet the
requirements of the order regarding size of operation,” states Burdell
Johnson, ASI president, in his letter to the secretary.
Trotter and his wife raise approximately 25 Polled Dorsets and grow
150 acres of alfalfa/alfalfa-grass hay on their farm in Indiana. He has
served as president of the Indiana Sheep Association and represented six
eastern states on the ASI executive board. Trotter is being nominated to
serve a second term on the board.
For the last 20 years, Pugh has fed and sold lambs to the retail trade
in North Carolina. He currently runs 40 head, but prior to 2002, he fed
1,400 head a year and sold them to a five-store chain. He has been active
in various sheep industry related associations.
Tammi and his wife have raised sheep in the Shenandoah Valley of
Virginia since 1980, but he has been active in the sheep industry most of
his life. He has served on the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s
Voluntary Scrapie Certification Program oversight committee since
1990.
McEwen’s more than 20 years of experience encompasses wool
production, lamb feeding and replacement ewe production. He owns
650 stock ewes as well as 18 registered rams. He serves on many state and
county boards.
In west Texas, Cude runs approximately 1,500 head of sheep on
the range. He has been in the sheep business for 30 years and is president
of the American Dorper Sheep Breeders Association as well as
other local boards.
“These individuals are very capable of making decisions in cooperation
with the feeding and packing sectors represented on this diverse,
industry-wide board,” concludes Johnson.
MID-YEAR SHEEP AND GOAT REPORT RELEASED
(July 25, 2008) The Sheep and Goat mid-year inventory report was
released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural
Statistics Service (NASS) which indicated that the number of
sheep and lambs as of July 1, 2008, totaled 7.35 million head, down 3
percent from July 1, 2007.
"It is not a surprise to the industry that sheep and lamb inventories
are slightly lower for this period," stated Burdell Johnson, American
Sheep Industry Association president. "May is the peak of range lambing
and this year it coincided with heavy snow and rain from Colorado
and Utah through the northern plains. Cold temperatures slowed grass
growth in many areas, and in New Mexico and Texas, poor lambing percentages
have been reported from several sources."
The breeding herd consists of 3.62 million ewes one year old and
older, 180,000 rams one year old and older and 620,000 replacement
lambs (including newborn lambs). Market lamb inventory at 2.86 million
head was comprised of 1.67 million lambs lighter than 65 pounds,
595,000 lambs 65 pounds to 84 pounds, 340,000 lambs 85 pounds to
105 pounds and 250,000 lambs heavier than 105 pounds. Market sheep
inventory was 75,000 head.
It is projected that the 2008 lamb crop in the United States will total
3.97 million head, down 2 percent from the 2007 lamb crop of 4.05 million
head. Lambs born during January through June 2008 totaled 3.48
million head or 88 percent of the yearly total. An additional 490,000 head
are expected to be born during the period July through December 2008.
We all know what today’s
Hampshire in the United States
looks like... but what about in
other parts of the world?
THE HAMPSHIRE
DOWN SHEEP
BREEDERS’ASSOC
http://www.hampshiredownsociety.org.uk/
Buckinghamshire, UK
REGISTRATION HISTORY OF THE BREED
Hampshire Down flocks were established more
than 150 years ago. The breed originated by crossing
the Wiltshire Horn and the Berkshire Knot
with the Southdown. These flocks became very
important in maintaining fertility on the thin soils
of Wiltshire, Hampshire and Berkshire and were
numerous across the whole of the South of England.
There were massive sales at Wilton, Overton,
Weyhill and other fairs with as many as
20,000 at each one.
DESCRIPTION
Face and ears are a rich dark brown, approaching
is white with an average staple length. Body deep
and symmetrical with ribs well sprung, broad,
straight back, flat loins, wide rump and deep heavily
muscled hind legs and breast. Legs being
strongly jointed and powerful are set well apart.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE BREED
The breed has been developed to provide terminal
sires for commercial flocks. Hampshire Down sired
lambs are early maturing quality butchers’ lambs.
Many pedigree flocks are Signet recorded and
scanned to encourage the breeding of lean fastgrowing
sheep. This gives the commercial flockmaster
the opportunity to use high growth-rate,
lean producing rams.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Hampshire Downs lamb naturally in December
with a lambing percentage of around 150-180%.
The lambs are very robust and hardy being able
to withstand most climatic conditions from a very
early age. They are extensively kept both on pastures
and uplands and will finish on grass quickly
with no concentrates. From birth a Hampshire
Down crossbred lamb will reach 18 kg deadweight
in under three months.
The carcass is well fleshed with one of the highest
eye muscle scores of any breed. Usually grading
extremely well, the modern
Thank you to Phil & Lisa Webster (Northstar Farms) of Maine,
Warren Finder of Kansas, and Larry Hand of Missouri
for their purchases from our flock this summer!
Thank you all the other buyers, bidders, and people
who stopped by the farm to purchase or to just
check out our breeding program! We appreciate the interest
people have had in purchasing from our flock, and hope to
continue producing great quality hampshires!
Thank you to Roger Nichols of Iowa for allowing us to
purchase another exceptional stud buck from him.
We look forward to seeing impressive lambs from this ram!
We lost one of the most influencial stud
bucks throughout the last several years. On Memorial Day
weekend, Deakin 01-776 NNP died. Many of you know him simply
as the “Deakin Ram”, he’s been used in flocks such as
Gordeneer, Wheaton, Kirlin and our own. We are sad to
announce this loss, as his effect on the hampshire breed was
so great! He sired many lambs that have made their way all
over the country and into numerous different flocks.
Several of his sons, including “Taylor Made” at Krackows and
“Big Ron” at Northstar Farms, are now making an impact of their
own within the breed. We did plan ahead and collected over
300 units of semen from him, so his genetics will still be
evident in our flock! As Jeff Gordeneer said, “You won’t
appreciate the Old Deakin Ram until you start lambing his
daughters.” This statement has been proven true in our flock
none the less. We hated to lose this exceptional stud,
but after his seven years of breeding, we’re looking forward
to the challenge of raising a new buck to match his
quality and excellence!
Continued from box on pg 31
Hampshire has been selected to pass on its
characteristics plus leanness to its progeny whilst
retaining the excellent succulence and flavour for
which the breed is renowned.
The ewes last well and regularly lamb for up to 10
or 12 years. Hampshire Downs will take the ram
at any time of the year, therefore three crops of
lambs can be obtained in two years. One of the
most important characteristics is
outstanding food conversion which enables it to
survive well in marginal grass conditions.
Hampshire Down wool is white, average staple
length 9cm, dense and fine texture, being graded
to 56-60’s (Bradford count). Rams clip about
6.75kg, yearling ewes 4.5kg and older ewes 2.7kg
of wool. The principal use is for fine felts and
blending with other wools owing to its good wearing
quality.
Hampshire Downs are regularly exported to Europe
where numerous flocks exist. In particular
Herrig Family
Hampshires
Thanks to Our National Sale Buyers!
many flocks are to be found in Netherlands, Belgium
and France. The breed is particularly valued
there because of the high quality quick maturing
lambs and the ability to survive both in extremes
of cold as found in the Massif Central in France
and of heat as experienced by a continental summer,
without shelter. World-wide, Hampshires are
to be found in over 40 countries. All sheep are inspected
by the Association’s official inspectors before
shipment for export.
BREED DEVELOPMENT
The launch of a Breed Improvement Scheme, in
partnership with Signet, together with continuing
central National and Regional Ram Lamb Performance
Tests (recorded by Signet, DANI and
Irish Department of Agriculture) helps keep the
breed to the forefront in satisfying the demands
of both the discerning consumer and supermarket
buyer. The winner of the 1999 Test achieved
a growth rate of 518 grams per day with a loin
muscle depth of 46.4mm (at that time, the highest
ever recorded measurement of any breed in the
UK or Ireland) and 67.4kg liveweight at just 125
days of age. The Hampshire Down Sheep Breeders’
Association’s newly commissioned computerised
Flock Book simplifies the recording and
tracking of leading blood lines within the breed
and complements the BLUP and Performance
recording schemes in general breed development.
A recent importation of Hampshire embryos from
the leading flock in New Zealand has also widened
the gene pool available to breeders.
