US<strong>Row<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Masters N<strong>at</strong>ionals Championships<br />

This year’s US<strong>Row<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Masters N<strong>at</strong>ional Championships on Green<br />

Lake <strong>in</strong> Se<strong>at</strong>tle, Wash. reflected the grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Row<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Center</strong> family,<br />

with newer members represent<strong>in</strong>g the club along with experienced rowers <strong>at</strong><br />

their fourth consecutive masters championship reg<strong>at</strong>ta. In 2005, TRC sent a<br />

squad of four rowers, Ken G<strong>at</strong>es, M<strong>at</strong>t Knifton, Jason Savage, and Chuck<br />

Stollenwerk. They were jo<strong>in</strong>ed for <strong>2006</strong> by fellow competitors Tommy<br />

Brown, Zachary Lynde, and Kelly Murphy. Also this year, the TRC team<br />

showed off its fem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e side with three members of its competitive women’s<br />

team, Lisa Ferris, Veronica Scheer, and Lisa Trema<strong>in</strong>e, impressively


compet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> was their first masters championship reg<strong>at</strong>ta <strong>in</strong> their first<br />

year of scull<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The TRC squad entered 18 events<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>gle sculls, double sculls, and<br />

quadruple sculls <strong>in</strong> both open and<br />

lightweight c<strong>at</strong>egories. Competitors <strong>at</strong> the<br />

reg<strong>at</strong>ta were placed <strong>in</strong>to events by age<br />

c<strong>at</strong>egory, rang<strong>in</strong>g from AA to J. <strong>Events</strong><br />

with more than six entries were narrowed<br />

down by rac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> he<strong>at</strong>s to determ<strong>in</strong>e top f<strong>in</strong>ishers who then moved on to<br />

event f<strong>in</strong>als.<br />

The 27 th annual reg<strong>at</strong>ta kicked<br />

off on Thursday, August 10, <strong>in</strong> typical<br />

Se<strong>at</strong>tle style with a chilly drizzl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>. The we<strong>at</strong>her improved by<br />

S<strong>at</strong>urday despite a fierce cross-tailw<strong>in</strong>d th<strong>at</strong> challenged competitors’ skills as<br />

they raced down the 1,000-meter course. Over the course of the four-day<br />

reg<strong>at</strong>ta, TRC received silver medals <strong>in</strong> six events <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the men’s B<br />

quadruple sculls, women’s lightweight B s<strong>in</strong>gle sculls, women’s lightweight


A double sculls, women’s AA double sculls, and mixed B quadruple sculls,<br />

as well as bronze medals <strong>in</strong> the men’s B double sculls. TRC teamm<strong>at</strong>es also<br />

competed <strong>in</strong> composite bo<strong>at</strong>s with Aust<strong>in</strong> <strong>Row<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Club and Anchorage<br />

<strong>Row<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Associ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
