Moving the Ball
Restarting Play
Scoring Points
In rugby, each team has 15 players on the pitch (field of play);
each person’s number signifies the position they play.
Forwards
Forwards have the main job of trying to retain possession
of the ball.
1. Loosehead prop
2. Hooker
3. Tighthead prop
4. Lock
5. Lock
6. Blindside Flanker
7. Openside Flanker
8. Number 8
Backs
Backs are fast, agile and skilled players whose main purpose
is to move the ball down the field–either by running or by
kicking the ball.
9. Scrumhalf
10. Flyhalf
11. Left Wing
12. Inside Center
13. Outside Center
14. Right Wing
15. Fullback
Rugby is unlike football in that there is no blocking. The person
with the ball leads the attack. He has the option to carry, pass or
kick the ball.
Play is not stopped when a player is tackled. When tackled, the ball
carrier must release the ball and roll out of the way so other players
may play the ball.
Running
When running the ball, players may continue to run until they are
tackled, step out of bounds, or run beyond the goal line for a try.
Players run the ball to advance it toward their opponents’ goal line.
Passing
The ball may be passed to any player on the team, but the pass must
be made laterally or backwards; there is no passing forward.
Kicking
Play can be restarted in three ways.
Line Outs
If the ball goes out of bounds, it is restarted with a line out. Both
teams form a line perpendicular to the touch line and 1-meter
apart from another. A player whose team was not responsible
for the ball going out of bounds may call a play; they then lift the
jumpers and throw the ball in. Players on each team are able to
contest for the ball.
Scrums
A bound group of forwards from each team form a tunnel with the
opposition. The non-offending team puts the ball into the tunnel by
rolling it into the middle; each team then pushes forward until one
player is able to hook the ball with his feet and push it back to the
back-row players of his team.
Try
Worth 5 points, a ‘try’ is scored when the ball is touched down into
the opposing team’s in-goal area. (This is much like a touchdown in
American football
Conversion
After a try is granted, two points will be given for a successful kick
that goes through the goal posts. The conversion must be attempted
from the touchdown location for the try.
Penalty Kick
Worth 3 points. Following a major violation by the opposition, a team
has the option to kick at goal. The kick must be from the point of the
foul or anywhere on a straight line behind the point of the violation.
Drop Goal
Worth 3 points. A drop goal can be taken from anywhere on the
field at any time during play. A drop goal is similar to a field goal in
football, but the kick is made during the course of normal play.
Any player may kick the ball forward at any time. Once the ball is
kicked, players of either team, regardless of whether or not the ball
hits the ground, may gain possession. Most kicking occurs to relieve
pressure because of poor field position.
Kickoffs
Kickoffs occur at the beginning of each match, half time and after
any points are scored. The kick needs to travel 10 meters and may be
contested by both teams.
