Three Decades of Creating Community
Thanks for joining us at the Table for DINING BY DESIGN 2014! This extraordinary event
coalesces the most creative visionaries in design today, who all bring their enormous talent
and passion to the table, creating community for us all. Plus, we celebrate what we do best:
eating, talking about design, and, most importantly, finding ways to make a DIFFArence!
targeting
the end
of AIDS
Interior Design salutes DIFFA’s 30 year valient effort targeting
HIV/AIDS through direct care and preventative education.
A big thank you to: Ali Tayar with Alejandro Cabrera, Parallel
Design; Wolf Gordon for digital printed graphics; SilverLining
Interiors and Atomic Millwork for coordination and construction.
Congratulations to DIFFA for thirty years of providing treatment and care to those living
with HIV and AIDS through fundraising and grants to organizations. To commemorate our
mission of fighting HIV and AIDS, we have created a Memory Wall. We invite you to reflect
on lives lost to the disease and to share your hope for the next generation.
When I began as DIFFA’s Chairman two years ago, I knew of the design industry’s steadfast
willingness to give, but I have been truly inspired by the community’s generosity, especially
this year! Bravo to my Event Co-Chair Alfredo Paredes from Ralph Lauren, who played a
mega role in this year’s success, and DIFFA’s Executive Director Johanna Osburn, whose
talent, determination, and dedication have been a gift for us all.
To everyone making a huge DIFFArence —designers, sponsors, volunteers, and attendees
—a heartfelt thank you. Continue to strive to make a DIFFArence and Bon Appétit!
Diffa’s Student Design Initiative, presented by Benjamin Moore
For DIFFA’s Student Design Initiative presented by Benjamin Moore, with
additional support from the Angelo Donghia Foundation, three of New
York’s most prestigious schools have created design installations for
DINING BY DESIGN New York 2014.
Under the tutelage of internationally recognized and cutting-edge
industry mentors, these student teams were guided through the creative
process from conception to execution, while working within a strict
budget. In addition, students were given the charge to join DIFFA in the
fight against HIV/AIDS by weaving the cause into their designs.
Benjamin Moore and DIFFA are proud to provide the next generation of
designers with the rare opportunity of working with top design veterans
and to participate in one of the industry’s most anticipated events. It is
DIFFA’s hope that they students will not only go one to realize their dreams
of becoming professional designers, but that they will become tomorrow’s
leaders in championing the cause.
The Angelo Donghia Foundation
DIFFA’s Board of Trustees wishes to express its gratitude. The Student Design
Initiative is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Angelo
Donghia Foundation, Inc.
Angelo Donghia created the Foundation in January 2001 to help educate,
encourage, and inspire future designers. This not-for-profit Foundation
provides support for two distinct areas: the advancement of education in
interior design and the discovery of causes and methods of treatment for
HIV/AIDS and its related diseases.
Patricia Urquiola
Among its other activities, the Foundation annually conducts a Senior
Scholarship Competition, which provides up to fifteen separate scholarships
of $30,000 to promising interior design students entering their senior
year of their undergraduate studies.
Philippe Starck
The Angelo Donghia Foundation grant helps make it possible for DIFFA
to implement its successful student design initiative as part of DINING BY
DESIGN in multiple cities nationwide.
Welcome to DIFFA’s 2014 DINING BY DESIGN! We are so glad to have you with us as we
kick off DIFFA’s 30th anniversary.
The dining installations featured this year are some of the most inspired. They not only
showcase the diverse and imaginative talents of our generous supporters, but many also
highlight the long and challenging journey we have fought against HIV/AIDS over the last
30 years. Many also give us hope that our continued work will someday lead to a cure.
We thank each of our supporters for sharing their creativity and helping DIFFA make a difference
in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Congratulations
DIFFA
DINING BY DESIGN takes months of planning and hundreds of volunteers.
I am incredibly grateful for the leadership of Cindy Allen and Alfredo Parades, this year’s
event co-chairs, as well as our dynamic steering committee and incredibly supportive
Board of Trustees. Your dedication and passion are truly inspirational! And of course,
thank you to the hardworking DIFFA National staff – Steven, Dawn, Liz and Amber.
Proceeds from DINING BY DESIGN help support DIFFA’s grant making, which fund work
on HIV/AIDS education, prevention, treatment and research in the United States. It is
because of individuals and companies like those in this room that we have made such
great progress in these areas. However, we are sobered by the fact that we are entering
the fourth decade of the epidemic and there is still much more to do. We remain steadfast
in our mission to continue funding important, innovative and life-saving programs here in
New York and across the country.
We have come so far in our fight against HIV/AIDS. I hope that we can count on you to help
us continue to make a DIFFArence!
