For the first time they attempted the Acting in Pairs section and the new syllabus Shakespeare. As an operator of a Homestay B&B in Glentunnel I was one that expressed my concern of the visible placement of the “Homebush” sign in full view of the junction of Bangor and the West Coast Roads. This junction is an extremely busy part of the tourist route down the Inland Scenic Road, or that to the West Coast. During the three year period that we have been operating we have had many complaints from guests about the lack of clarity of road signs indicating the Inland Scenic Route and points west through to Homebush, Glentunnel, Rakaia, etc. Many of Ashburton was the venue for the Canterbury Primary Schools Athletics championships, held last Wednesday, December 3rd. Pupils from throughout Selwyn attended after qualifying at either the Malvern Zones or the Lincoln Zones - depending on the school’s location. Outstanding results came from Liam Watson of Weedons School who won the 9 year old boys long jump final. The 31 pupil Greendale School p ro vi d ed s i x M a l ve r n representatives to compete at the Can terbury champs. Needless to say, the School was stoked to have so many children qualify at the Malvern event in Darfield and go on to the next level of competition. All the Greendale pupils were in sprint these guests are of other nationalities with limited English. Just think when I tell the next guest clarifying the route to Glentunnel from Darfield: “head out the West Road, look for Bangor Road just past the church on the left, turn there, on the right you’ll see the Homebush sign, but that’s not Homebush, 600m down the road you’ll see a sign indicating Coalgate, Glentunnel, etc, the first major intersection you will come to is the real Homebush. Carry on for six or seven kilometres, and you will arrive here.” I would suggest these tourists (both overseas and NZ) will not recognise the Homebush Rail s ig n f o r w h at it is , commemorating a rail station. As a suggestion place the sign where it is not in view of the Far Left: Louis Frew of West Melton Primary School competed in the 10 year old Boys Shot Put and Discus. It was Louis’ first time of attending and while not gaining a top ten place he commented that he really enjoyed himself. Left: Emily Sharpe competed in the 9 year old Girls 1000 metres. She came 11th, had a great run, and added that it was run quite fast, but that she was very pleased with her result. West Melton Primary School sent a team of eleven and for many of them, it was a first time road junction or add something indicating “The Commemorative Homebush Station” and you’ll get my support. Paul McOscar - Glentunnel To the Editors: We also feel disappointed with the Township Committee’s decision to remove the sign from the Homebush station building. Who in their right mind would think they are entering Homebush when the sign is behind trees and over thirty metres back from the main road? It is time the Committee took notice of town folk and stopped pampering to the minority few. We say; bring back the sign to its rightful place. Russell Green & Peter Pearson - Darfield experience.
