Location & Physical Features<br />

<strong>Bequia</strong> is situated at approximate latitude<br />

13°17’ north and longitude 61°8’ west,<br />

between St. Vincent (to its north), and<br />

Mustique (to its south). The total area is<br />

seven square miles, and is of very varied<br />

topography. Originally a volcanic island,<br />

<strong>Bequia</strong> has fertile plains in Friendship, Spring<br />

and Industry which are the sites of former<br />

plantations. Excellent beaches are located on<br />

both the windward (east and south-east) and<br />

leeward (west) sides.<br />

English is the official and working language.<br />

There are several businesses, especially<br />

amongst those serving the yacht industry,<br />

where French or German are also spoken.<br />

Currency<br />

<strong>Bequia</strong> uses the Eastern Caribbean<br />

dollar, which is exchanged at the rate of<br />

US$1 to about EC$2.67 ($2.60 in hotels<br />

and stores). Both US and EC dollars are<br />

accepted by stores, restaurants and hotels,<br />

as are travellers’ cheques and most major<br />

credit cards. Check if credit cards can be<br />

used when making reservations for meals<br />

or accommodation and enquire at retail<br />

establishments before you buy.<br />

Climate<br />

Winter temperatures range between 70°F<br />

and 85°F (21°C and 29°C), summer between<br />

75°F and 90°F (24°C and 32°C). Winters are<br />

dry, summers showery.<br />

appliances may be used with an appropriate<br />
