Jet lag!
even exciting yet tiresome hours in flight. We finally arrived the Dubai International
SAirport. This is the international airport serving Dubai. It is a major airline hub in the
Middle East, situated in the Al Garhoud district, 2.5 nautical miles east of Dubai. We
actually thought we were too tired for anything.
We walked through the airport as though our legs are too stiff to move; yet our heads keep

turning at 180 to 360 degree circumference stylishly trying to catch a
glimpse of the fabulous airport. Of course we looked every
indication tired until we hit the roads of the Dubai City.

t all started like a joke, or better said
Ia mere utterance by Godwin
'Alagba' John meant to reflect his
determination to achieve the proposed
Sales budget as set and agreed by the
management of Fidson Healthcare Plc.
It was at the 2013 Sales and Marketing
Conference at Golden Tulip Hotels,
Festac Town, Lagos. While making his
presentation on his sales plan and
projection for 2013, Godwin had simply
said “My Dubai, My Dream”, meaning to
say that he is already dreaming of being
in Dubai and to make that dream come
true, he is determined to play his part to
surpass the set budget.
This was following the Managing
Director; Dr Fidelis Ayebae's promise
that an all-expense paid trip to Dubai
would be Management's prize to the
company's Sales team if they can up
their ante and achieve the N10billion
sales mark, a remarkable increase from
their initial N7.5 billion sales mark in
2012. Although at that very point of
making this open promise, many
actually thought it was a joke; an
interesting one at that. Everybody
screamed in excitement not because
they believed it in totality, but because
they thought the promise sounded
thrilling enough to inflame their fantasy
(a Dubai trip would surely make any
mouth water. It is a place to be). Little
may they have known how sincere
management's decision to indulge
them was, but from the very first time
Dubai was mentioned, the Fidsonian
spirit in them was once again provoked.
Their mental power were ignited and
revved aggressively. Rather than seeing
challenges, they say opportunities.
Rather than seeing a river, they saw a
speed boat. Rather than seeing a desert
they saw Camels and springs. Simply
said, they got ready!
The Dubai trip became a year-long

dream. The slogan 'My Dubai, My Dream' became a
reminder of what is at stake. Realizing the sales
budget didn't come that easy. The team sweated;
they went through fire, thunder and brimstone;
everyone one their toes. No sleeping, no slacking, no
slumber! It was a sweat worth breaking; a dream
worth fighting for.

Sunday, 5 of January, barely few days after the New
Year celebration and while the entire city was still
basking in the euphoria of the season, green and
navy blue striped T-shirt took over the city. Before
long the Muritala Mohammed International Airport
was crowded by these smart and happy looking
folks walking in admirable coordination. Everyone at
the airport was amazed. Questions filled people's
tongues as they look in total bewilderment. Who are
these people and where are they going to? It took
the little badge on the shirts to answer the
questions. Fidson, oh yes Fidson staff!
Adventures of the
Arabian
Sand
Mountain
Seven hours was what it took inflight; maybe
another extra few hours of waiting at the airport.
Whatever may have happened between these
periods this writer pretends not to be aware? After
all, before we could say Jack Robbi…Alas! Dubai
became a reality.
Touch down at the Dubai Airport was smooth and
exciting. The City felt our presence immediately, one
large group of exciting folks looking smart and
radiant in their 'aso ebi' T-shirt. The weather may
have heard of our arrival; running at about 30 degree
Celsius, bright and welcoming.
Eager to see what the city had got to offer us, eager
to experience what is so special about the
metropolis that they say never sleep, the team
wasted no time checking-in and settling down at the
prestigious Ramada Chelsea Hotel tout to be one of
the four star hospitality centers . Before long they
were set to explore the splendor of the Emirate city,
and the first point of call after a brief rest was the
Desert Safari. An awesome experience in the desert,
something you don't get to see regularly. That was
not all that makes it special. A tremendous dune
drive round the desert made our eyes turn in a whirl
dizzy dazzle of the Sahara SUVs till the set of the sun,
when the team finally decided to chill-out at the
camp site. There was so much to eat and drink, so
much to cheer about as the team merry through the
beautiful evening under the fresh and coolness of

the atmosphere. Sunset sparkle triggered by the
flashes of photographs, bar, barbeque, buffet
dinner, Arabic costumes that made the male folks
look like the sheiks, while some of the ladies tried
their hands and feet on the Henna painting. Of
course, not without various performances from
the magician, stunt dancers and guess what, a
belly dancer. Oh my God! (This writer may not be
able to describe the belly dancer more
appropriately because his views were obstructed
by more enticed viewers. Any help?)
The next day was the Dhow cruise dinner.
Thrilling, stimulating and romantic are words that
come to mind when describing the feeling of
watching the boats glide through the Dubai creek.

o one will ever believe that some sixty to seventy years ago Dubai has been just slightly more
Nthan a desert sprinkled countryside where Bedouin tribes strayed the sands and a huddle of
settlers crowded around the banks of the creek. Just about a century ago, Dubai was said to
have hardly had running water, real good roads and the main mode of transport was said to be
through camels.
But today, as we could see from our voyage, Dubai's ambition seems to know no bound, nor does it
accommodate any mediocrity, with the Dubai Mall (the world's largest mall) and the colossal airport,
which is the busiest in the whole of the Middle East; apparently, It has to be perfect to be Dubai.

An Arabian City of Splendor
Within hours of arriving Dubai we were
astonished by the fabulous, artistic and
magnificent structures that arched the sky. To
say that in Dubai nothing is impossible will mean
over-flogging the obvious. This is awe-inspiring!
Dubai's evolution has been incredible, with farreaching
skyscrapers and gleaming office blocks
rising up everywhere.
Dead silence... No Blink... All eyes gazed, mouth left wide
open in surprise of how beautiful a city should be.
Dubai is a perfect description of what any city
dreams to be like, we constantly remind
ourselves; with beautiful skyline, colossal
skyscrapers that remind one of the tower of
Babel; exquisite hotels edifices here and there,
f a n c i f u l c o r p o r a t e s t r u c t u r e s , f a i r l y
sophisticated transportation system observed,
especially with the a state-of-the-art metro
system and a neatly and superbly built road
network. How on earth did they pull this off
within the short period?The thoughts rambled
through our minds as we journey to our
destination.

all saying welcome gree ng on
your arrival.
Now, we feel at home after a warm welcome from our MD. Yes, we
arrived at Ramada Hotel and were warmly welcomed by our very own.
Our own true leader, mentor and captain of our ship; talking about the
one and only, Dr Fidelis Ayebae, MD/CEO Fidson Healthcare Plc. He
looked so excited to see us. He couldn't even hide his feeling as he took
his time to hug the team one after the other in a
warm welcome. He had arrived Dubai earlier before
the rest of us. What a man he is; he said it in Lagos.
One year later he brought it to reality in Dubai. It was
a beautiful moment.

atmosphere, clouded by sparkling light of the
various building offering an intriguing view of
the old town, sheik Saheed's house and
birthplace, golf club, parks and sky-scrappers.
Whatever part of the boat, upper or lower
deck, there was an amazing feeling that will
linger on everyone's mind for a very long time,
if not for a life time. Beyond the Arabic
International buffet dinner that was enjoyed,
there was a remarkable difference in the feeling
anyway. The reason is, first on both boats,
those on the upper deck had it colder than
those on the lower deck and had to rely on
more glasses of drink to keep warm. More
interestingly, the first boat which was led by the
General Manager Sales, Mr Alli-Balogun turned
out livelier that the second boat which had the
Managing Director and all the other directors
and senior managers. The GM Sales' boat had
all the thrills and razzle-dazzle that made the
adrenalines of those on board pump faster,
with some stimulating Naija Jamz like
'Skelewu'by Davido, Pull Over by P-Square,
Ukwu by Tomaya, Carol by Wizkid, Scapegoat
by D-Banj, Kukere by Inyanya and lots more.
MD's boat on the other hand had its exciting
music on the mid-tempo range, Oldies', classic
tunes and jazz to make them reminisce their
youthful age. Whatever was the case, no
anyone on the cruise wished the evening was
over. It was a blissful evening, the type you
dream and wish for.
The following day was the Sales and Marketing
Conference and Awards. Themed 'Leading the

Before long they were set to explore
the splendor of the Emirate City, and
the first point of call after a brief rest
was the Desert Safari.
An awesome experience in the desert,
something you don’t get to see
regularly. That was not all that makes
it special. A tremendous dune drive
round the desert made our eyes turn
in a whirl dizzy dazzle of the Sahara
SUV’s till the set of the sun.
A moment you can’t forget in a hurry.

This was followed by the ACE awards ceremony. Five
members of staff who emerged winners in various
categories of this year's edition of the prestigious
awards were rewarded at the event amidst glamour
and pageantry of one of the city's most prestigious
hotel. The award recipients are; Divisional Manager,
Eastern Region, Olugbenga Adeyemi (Leadership
Excellence); Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Nmaka
Tijani (Corporate Impact); both Regional Sales
Manager, Daniel David and Senior Micro-Biologist,
Fayoade Babatunde emerged joint winners for Role
Model, while Finance Assistant, Bassey Edogie
received the ACE for Customer Service Excellence.
The even ended on an exhilarating note with a gala
event. There were lots of singing and dancing, wining
of waists, chit-chats over the bottles and clinging
glasses all a way to express the excitement of a
successful conference, awards ceremony and of
course the entire Dubai experience. The fun was
unlimited as everyone put on their dancing shoes and
threw shyness to the wind. The party went on till the
early hours of the following morning with DJ blasting
different popular Naija jamz to the delight of even our
foreign partners and friends present.
The next day was 'Welcome back to Nigeria. Welcome
back to reality. Welcome back to the field of play or
battle field where the team is expected to put on their
'Fidsonian spirit and once again take the bull by the
horn and deliver optimally beyond expectation; time
to lead the way and deliver the unexpected. Time to
work hard and act right; time to put excellence at
center stage; time to believe… TIME TO ACHIEVE!

BRIEF INTRODUCTION ON ACE
(ACKNOWLEDGING AND CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE) AWARDS
The ACE Awards is a formal event that aims at Acknowledging and Celebrating Excellence
as regards employee performance and achievement during the course of the
organization's financial year. At the event, employees who made exceptional
contributions are awarded ACEs to reward their accomplishments. The ACE Awards
ceremony takes place during the Gala Nite of the annual Sales and Marketing
Conference. This however does not restrict the event to members of the Sales and
Marketing Department, as a company-wide approach in which all employees in all the
departments are eligible to receive the award is adopted.
The ACE Awards are in different categories, which may include Management
Excellence, Marketing Excellence, Leadership Excellence, Corporate Impact,
Intellectual Development, Innovation, Customer Service, Process Improvement,
Teamwork, Role Model and Analytical Excellence.
Nominations on the eligibility of an employee to receive an ACE award are submitted by
the employee's colleague or line supervisor with justification as to why the said
employee is deserving of an ACE award. The nominations are then collated and
screened for the various categories by the ACE committee, who then make
recommendations to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) for final selection of awardees.
Awardees are pre-informed of their winning an ACE Award and given the opportunity to
invite a select number of his/her family members to be present at the award ceremony.
The presence of colleagues as well as family members is to give the employee an even
greater sense of accomplishment and serve as motivation toward most outstanding
achievements.
The ACE Awards is an annual event which serves as a means to honour employees
through recognition of their outstanding performance. It is hoped that it will motivate
employees to achieve excellence, reduce mediocrity and challenge all members of staff
to consistently surpass expectations and deliver superior performance.

With all sense of honour and appreciation, I
welcome you to yet another evening of
recognition and celebration. To our esteemed
guests who have joined us today to celebrate
their friends and loved ones, we are glad to
have you with us and hope that you would find
this moment truly memorable.
Today, we hold the second edition of our
prestigious ACE awards - an event where we
Acknowledge and Celebrate Excellence in our
people.
Martin Luther King Jr. offers a good place to
start an event like this when he said: “If a man is
called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep
streets even as Michelangelo painted, or
Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare
wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well
that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause
to say - 'Here lived a great street sweeper who
did his job well.” Such are the ones we gather
here this evening to recognize and celebrate.
Excellence has been the enduring essence on
which this great organization is built. For
almost two decades of our existence,
Excellence has been the core of our values. I am
thrilled tonight to set Excellence at the centrestage.
What differentiates us as an institution is
our three-fold grip on Excellence. Undoubtedly,
even the meanest of men desire excellence. We
drive our people to pursue Excellence, when
they attain it, we acknowledge it; this is perhaps
where superior people stop. At Fidson, we treat
Excellence beyond mere recognition; we make
Excellence feel good about us. We celebrate
Excellence.
What we have set out to do today is not
s h o w b o a t i n g o r a w a n t o n d i s p l a y o f
extravagance. It is the little we can do to honor
prolific and prodigious persons that have
applied themselves in sublime ways and sought
extraordinary means to achieve company goals
and exceed corporate expectations. These
ones, ladies and gentlemen are the jewels of
our business, the treasures of our trade. They
are the glitters on our diadem, the sparkles on
our crown.
It is auspicious for me tonight, to profoundly
acknowledge the talents, efforts and incredible

team of tenacious and unremitting warriors.

35% year on year in an industry whose average
stands at 10%. I salute your devotion to duty,

service and the incredible abilities that you

name from the acronym of its rationale,

The grand ceremony witnessed the gathering
of hundreds of company's Staff members
from all the regions of the country; all
appearing smart and dapper in dark-coloured
suits with black ties; the ladies well adorned
and dazzling in their debonair dinner gowns
for the glamorous event under a bright
flamboyant ambience.
Five members of staff who emerged winners
in various categories of this year's edition of
the prestigious awards were celebrated and

While explaining the rationale for the ACE, Dr
Ayebae noted that the event is not for
showboating or a wanton display of
extravagance. “It is the little we can do to
honor prolific and prodigious persons that
have applied themselves in sublime ways and
sought extraordinary means to achieve
company goals and exceed corporate
expectations”, he said.
The recipients were all joy receiving the
prestigious crystal plaque and Certificate of
Excellence; standing on the podium with their
family members, to whom the recipient's
citations were read. This must have been one
of the most memorable moments of their
lives. The joy of been celebrated before a large
crowd of colleagues, distinguished guests and
d i g n i t a r i e s ; t h e e u p h o r i a o f b e i n g
acknowledged as a hero before your spouse
and children and knowing that they will be
more proud of you; and also the fulfillment of
knowing that those little things done in great
ways are been seen and appreciated.
This is also in line with the view of the Sales and
Marketing Director, Mr Olugbenga Olayeye
who said “ACE is a prestigious award that is
special to the nominees because this is a highly

creative ideas and has an unstoppable 'can do'
attitude; this often generates excitement and

regions of the country; all appearing smart and
dapper in dark-coloured suits with black ties; the
ladies well adorned and dazzling in their debonair
dinner gowns for the glamorous event under a
bright flamboyant ambience.
Five members of staff who emerged winners in
various categories of this year's edition of the
prestigious awards were celebrated and rewarded
at the event amidst glamour and pageantry at the
beautiful Emirate City. The awardees are; Divisional
Manager, Eastern Region, Olugbenga Adeyemi, who
received the ACE for Leadership Excellence;
Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Nmaka Tijani received
the ACE for Corporate Impact; both Regional Sales
Manager, Daniel David and Senior Micro-Biologist,
Fayoade Babatunde emerged joint recipients of the
ACE for Role Model, while Finance Assistant, Bassey
Edogie received the ACE for Customer Service
Excellence.
Olayemi received the awards for demonstrating
outstanding leadership prowess with the
emergence of a phalanx of men from a dispirited and
hopeless crop. He is said to possess exemplary
entrepreneurial guts, with which he earned his
division, constant business expansion and
relevance. Under him, there was a consistent
increase in the contribution of his division to
organizational revenue. Contribution to national
budget has climbed consistently from 24% in 2007 to

Nmaka Tijani won the ACE for Corporate Impact for
her efforts at managing the Quality Management
S y s t e m s , w h i c h e a r n e d t h e c o m p a n y t h e
international certification as an ISO 9001:2000 in
2007 and her relentless pursuit of continuous
improvement upgraded this certification to ISO
9001: 2008 in 2011. As head of the organization's
Regulatory Affairs and Compliance unit, her job
entails interfacing with stringent regulators and
inflexible bureaucrats. Nmaka makes the most
difficult tasks appear simple. She couples silky
deftness with pace in getting results Nmaka
epitomizes character, diligence, accomplishment
