The Year 1938-1939 in the Chapters<br />

ALABAMA ALPHA—UNIVERSFTY OF ALABAMA<br />

THE <strong>Phi</strong>s at Alabama opened the year by pledging<br />

twenty men. Late rushing added diree or<br />

four more to the delegation. Thirteen of these<br />

men were initiated at the end of the first semester.<br />

Cox was a star on the varsity football<br />

team. At the close of the season he was<br />

elected captain for 1939. He was tapped by<br />

OAK and made a member of the Cotillion Club.<br />

Marshall was president of the Interfraternity<br />

Council and delegate to the N.I.C. meetings<br />

in New York City. Palmer gained membership in<br />

Scabbard and Blade and was their representative<br />

to their national convention at Berkeley, Calif.<br />

Kidd was tapped by O-AK. Webb and Halsey<br />

were initiated into <strong>Phi</strong>lomathic Literary Society.<br />

Burton gained his 4> B K key. Ferguson was<br />

elected business manager of the Rammer-jammer.<br />

Throughout the year the chapter's intramural<br />

teams were most successful and led all other<br />

fraternities in the various competitive sports.<br />

The chapter produced an excellent issue of the<br />

Alabama <strong>Phi</strong>.<br />

ALABAMA BETA—ALABAMA POLYTECHNIC<br />

INSTITUTE<br />

ON Greater Auburn Day the chapter had the<br />

distinct pleasure of entertaining Brother Bartow<br />

Eberhart, '82, who was initiated when the chapter<br />

was sub rosa. Many members of the chapter<br />

were interested in activities on the campus.<br />

Troup was vice-president of 0 A K, a member of<br />

Spades, the Interfraternity Council, Ring Committee,<br />

Elections Committee, sports editor of the<br />

Plainsman and was listed in Who's Who in<br />

American Universities. McKenney was TBII,<br />

OAK, * *, a member of the Interfraternity<br />

Council, and Scabbard and Blade. Branch<br />

was president of T B n and a member of H K N.<br />

Barfield was a member of Interfraternity Council<br />

and 4»*. Stratford was on the Plainsman staff<br />

and a member of the track team. Nichols was<br />

treasurer of the freshman class, participated in<br />

debating and was a member of the Plainsman<br />

staff. Fleming played freshman basketball. Williams,<br />

John and Wilson Taylor, and Haas were<br />

members of the Glee Club. <strong>No</strong>rthington was a<br />

member of Scarab. Rencher and Raht were members<br />

of the Glomerata staff. Haas was a member<br />

of the freshman rross country team and led all<br />

the freshmen with an average of 94.2.<br />

ALBERTA ALPHA—UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA<br />

THE <strong>Phi</strong>s of the far <strong>No</strong>rth had a perfect rush<br />

season with twelve men bid and twelve men<br />

pledged. Their perfection spread out into many<br />

athletic lines. Nine men were with the football<br />

team. Clarke was manager; Smith, Monkman, and<br />

McLennan were linemen, McDonald and Forbes<br />

were at the end positions, while Fitzgerald, Stewart<br />

and MacCallum were in the backfield. McLennan<br />

was chosen for membership in the Block A<br />

Club because of his outstanding service to the<br />

team. Four inter-faculty Rugby teams were managed<br />

by <strong>Phi</strong>s; namely, Thomas, French, Miller,<br />

and Brimbecombe. Players on the various teams<br />

were Aikenhead, Howard, Pryde, Gore, Hope,<br />

and Chesney. On the senior track team Gore was<br />

a middle distance relay member, and Freeze was<br />

an excellent pole vaulter. Stewart and Chesney<br />

were star members of Alberta's Golden Bears<br />

hockey team. Other fields of endeavor found Mc-<br />

Laws the representative to the Student Council<br />

for the law school and Monkman representative<br />

for the Engineering Students Society. Ritchie was<br />

secretary-treasurer of the Medical Club. French<br />

became the Student Council representative for<br />

the Agricultural Faculty. The Pallas Award for<br />

the outstanding scholar in the chapter was won<br />

by Hutton. The award for the <strong>Phi</strong>keias went to<br />

Scott for his excellent scholarship. The chapter<br />

has enjoyed the association of the Edmonton<br />

Alumni Club during the year.<br />

ARIZONA ALPHA—UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA<br />

THE <strong>Phi</strong>s in the land of dry sunshine enjoyed a<br />

very active and successful year together. In athletic<br />

sports the chapter was represented in football<br />

by Barringer, Held, and Swift, ends. Chandler<br />

was a member of the freshman team. When<br />

spring football season rolled around Held, Attridge.<br />

Chandler, and Westfall were out for practice.<br />

In basketball Chandler, Westfall, and Hood<br />

were members of the team. Tennis drew the attention<br />

of McCormick and Catlin. The chapter's<br />

intramural teams were successful, taking championships<br />

in basketball and cross-country events.<br />

In their frosh year Chandler and Westfall won<br />

numerals in basketball. Other fields of activity<br />

found Gwynn chairman of the social life committee,<br />

Scott president of the freshman class,<br />

Kreiling, Merchant, and Chenery heads of departments<br />

of the yearbook, and Entz winner of a<br />

University public speaking contest. Dramatic productions<br />

drew the attention of Foote and Scott<br />

who had male leads in Stage Door. Scott also<br />

took an important part in Winterset. Kelley and<br />

Brewer were pledged to * M A. Kelley was a<br />

member of Blue Key also. Chenery was elected<br />

to 4» B "^ and to 4> B K. Tenny was a student associate<br />

of A.I.M.E. The chapter enjoyed many<br />

social events, one of which was a very interesting<br />

mothers' and dads' day banquet at the chapter<br />

house.
