Love it or hate it, every<strong>on</strong>e<br />

seems <strong>to</strong> have an op<strong>in</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

was officially opened<br />

<strong>the</strong> amount of m<strong>on</strong>ey <strong>the</strong><br />

impossible <strong>be</strong>fore <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> new kerb-less road’s<br />

potential for festivals<br />

and markets, <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st<br />

flavour of <strong>the</strong> event came<br />

The Schis<strong>to</strong>somiasis C<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

NTDs can often lead <strong>to</strong><br />

adults are unable <strong>to</strong><br />

work <strong>to</strong> support <strong>the</strong>ir families<br />

and children are forced<br />

disabled and unemployed<br />

adults struggle <strong>to</strong> afford<br />

food and basic services, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

healthcare, and generati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of children grow up with little<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> and few prospects for<br />

The SCI and <strong>the</strong> PCD at<br />

Imperial, <strong>in</strong> partnership with <strong>the</strong><br />

Centre for Neglected Tropical<br />

Diseases at Liverpool School of<br />

Tropical Medic<strong>in</strong>e, will receive<br />

£25 milli<strong>on</strong> over four years <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>to</strong> protect 40 milli<strong>on</strong> people<br />

Patients’ <strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

hospital reviews<br />

reflect data <strong>on</strong><br />

hospital outcomes<br />

Patients’ rat<strong>in</strong>gs of hospitals tally<br />

with objective measures of <strong>the</strong><br />

hospital’s performance, accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

an <strong>in</strong>dependent study published<br />

<strong>on</strong> 13 February <strong>in</strong> Archives of<br />

Internal Medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 2008, patients have <strong>be</strong>en able <strong>to</strong><br />

post comments <strong>on</strong> and rate hospitals<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> NHS Choices website, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same way as <strong>the</strong>y might rate a hotel <strong>on</strong><br />

Tripadvisor. The system’s prop<strong>on</strong>ents<br />

suggest that it helps patients <strong>to</strong> choose<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st services, but no previous<br />

study has <strong>in</strong>vestigated whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se<br />

<strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e rat<strong>in</strong>gs are related <strong>to</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

measures of healthcare quality, such as<br />

mortality rates and <strong>in</strong>cidence of hospital-acquired<br />

<strong>in</strong>fecti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Imperial researchers exam<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

10,274 rat<strong>in</strong>gs of all NHS acute hospital<br />

trusts <strong>in</strong> England submitted <strong>on</strong> NHS<br />

Choices <strong>in</strong> 2009 and 2010. They found<br />

that hospitals with <strong>be</strong>tter patient<br />

rat<strong>in</strong>gs tend <strong>to</strong> have lower death rates<br />

<strong>in</strong> additi<strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong> lower readmissi<strong>on</strong><br />

rates. Hospitals rated by patients as<br />

<strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>g cleaner have lower rates of<br />

MRSA <strong>in</strong>fecti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

“There is a lot of data available <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> public <strong>on</strong> hospital performance, but<br />

people rarely use c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al measures<br />

and often f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m difficult <strong>to</strong><br />

understand,” said Dr Felix Greaves,<br />

(Public Health), who led <strong>the</strong> study. “Our<br />

results suggest that NHS Choices rat<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

may provide useful and relevant<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> for patients mak<strong>in</strong>g choices<br />

about <strong>the</strong>ir care.”<br />

When <strong>the</strong> 25 per cent of hospitals<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st rat<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>on</strong> NHS Choices<br />

are compared with <strong>the</strong> 25 per cent rated<br />

worst, mortality rates were 5 per cent<br />

lower and readmissi<strong>on</strong> rates were<br />

11 per cent lower <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> more highlyrated<br />

hospitals.<br />

Black holes<br />

Giv<strong>in</strong>g life as well as deal<strong>in</strong>g death<br />

Imperial astrophysicists have identified a black hole<br />

that appears <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g new stars <strong>to</strong> form am<strong>on</strong>gst<br />

its encircl<strong>in</strong>g gas clouds.<br />

Black holes had <strong>be</strong>en thought <strong>to</strong> h<strong>in</strong>der <strong>the</strong><br />

birth of stars, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir gravitati<strong>on</strong>al forces propel<br />

a str<strong>on</strong>g flow of material that sweeps away <strong>the</strong> gas<br />

clouds from which stars are made. Now <strong>the</strong><br />

scientists have found evidence that <strong>the</strong>se same<br />

flows can also compress regi<strong>on</strong>s of gas and form<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> new stars. The team, led by Dr Sugata<br />

Kaviraj (Physics) and colleagues at <strong>the</strong> Universities of<br />

Tasmania and Oxford, have published <strong>the</strong>ir results <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> February editi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> journal M<strong>on</strong>thly Notices of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Royal Astr<strong>on</strong>omical Society.<br />

Dr Kaviraj, said: “Black holes may have a<br />

significantly more complicated effect <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe<br />

than scientists previously thought <strong>the</strong>y did. We knew<br />

that <strong>the</strong> outflows produced by black holes could<br />

Dr Pike expla<strong>in</strong>s: “We found<br />

that even though <strong>the</strong>re is an<br />

abundance of ice, Mars has <strong>be</strong>en<br />

experienc<strong>in</strong>g a super-drought<br />

that may well have<br />

lasted hundreds of<br />

milli<strong>on</strong>s of years.<br />

We th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> Mars<br />

we know <strong>to</strong>day<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trasts sharply<br />

with its earlier his<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

which had<br />

warmer and wetter<br />

periods and which may have<br />

<strong>be</strong>en more suited <strong>to</strong> life. Future<br />

NASA and ESA missi<strong>on</strong>s that are<br />

planned for Mars will have <strong>to</strong> dig<br />

deeper <strong>to</strong> search for evidence<br />

of life, which may still <strong>be</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

refuge underground.”<br />

The team also estimated that<br />

<strong>the</strong> soil that <strong>the</strong>y analysed had<br />

<strong>be</strong>en exposed <strong>to</strong> liquid water for,<br />

at most, 5,000 years s<strong>in</strong>ce its<br />

formati<strong>on</strong> billi<strong>on</strong>s of years ago and<br />

this sample may <strong>be</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicative of<br />

soil across <strong>the</strong> whole planet. They<br />

also found that Martian and Mo<strong>on</strong><br />

soil is <strong>be</strong><strong>in</strong>g formed under <strong>the</strong><br />

same extremely dry c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

remove gas and quench star formati<strong>on</strong> but few<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong>y could somehow help <strong>the</strong> birth of<br />

completely new stars.”<br />

The centre of just about every galaxy is thought <strong>to</strong><br />

host a black hole, a highly dense po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> space with<br />

a str<strong>on</strong>g gravitati<strong>on</strong>al pull. The black holes ‘switch <strong>on</strong>’<br />

from time <strong>to</strong> time, driv<strong>in</strong>g material around <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />

outflows that can stretch for milli<strong>on</strong>s of light years.<br />

This flow ploughs through galactic gas, compress<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

heat<strong>in</strong>g and push<strong>in</strong>g it out of <strong>the</strong> way. Much of this<br />

gas is <strong>the</strong> raw material from which stars are made, so<br />

<strong>the</strong> outflows significantly affect star formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Body clock l<strong>in</strong>ked <strong>to</strong> dia<strong>be</strong>tes<br />

A study led by Imperial<br />

researchers and published<br />

<strong>in</strong> Nature Genetics <strong>in</strong> January<br />

has found new evidence for a<br />

l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>be</strong>tween <strong>the</strong> body clock<br />

horm<strong>on</strong>e melat<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong> and<br />

type 2 dia<strong>be</strong>tes. It found that<br />

people who carry rare genetic<br />

mutati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recep<strong>to</strong>r for<br />

melat<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong> have a much higher risk of type 2 dia<strong>be</strong>tes.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs should help scientists assess pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

dia<strong>be</strong>tes risk and could lead <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> development of<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>alised treatments.<br />

Previous research has found that if volunteers have<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir sleep disrupted repeatedly for three days, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

temporarily develop symp<strong>to</strong>ms of dia<strong>be</strong>tes.<br />

The body’s sleep-wake cycle is c<strong>on</strong>trolled by <strong>the</strong><br />

horm<strong>on</strong>e melat<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>. In 2008, a genetic study led by<br />

Imperial discovered that people with comm<strong>on</strong> variati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> gene for MT2, a recep<strong>to</strong>r for melat<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>, have a slightly<br />

higher risk of type 2 dia<strong>be</strong>tes.<br />

The new study reveals that carry<strong>in</strong>g any of four rare<br />

mutati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> MT2 gene <strong>in</strong>creases a pers<strong>on</strong>’s risk of<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g type 2 dia<strong>be</strong>tes six times. The release of <strong>in</strong>sul<strong>in</strong>,<br />

which regulates blood sugar levels, is known <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong><br />

regulated by melat<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>. The researchers suggest that<br />

mutati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> MT2 gene may disrupt <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>be</strong>tween<br />

<strong>the</strong> body clock and <strong>in</strong>sul<strong>in</strong> release, lead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> abnormal<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trol of blood sugar.<br />

Professor Philippe Froguel (Public Health), said:<br />

“Blood sugar c<strong>on</strong>trol is <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> many processes regulated<br />

by <strong>the</strong> body’s biological clock. This study adds <strong>to</strong><br />

our understand<strong>in</strong>g of how <strong>the</strong> gene that carries <strong>the</strong> bluepr<strong>in</strong>t<br />

she’d got <strong>on</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> GB row<strong>in</strong>g team<br />

graduate entry medical degree at<br />

Imperial with a row<strong>in</strong>g scholarship.<br />

“I never thought ei<strong>the</strong>r of those<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs would happen!” she says.<br />

Although <strong>the</strong> GB team wanted<br />

Melanie <strong>to</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> full-time she was<br />

keen <strong>to</strong> start her course at <strong>the</strong><br />

College that Oc<strong>to</strong><strong>be</strong>r and tra<strong>in</strong> with<br />

former Head Coach at <strong>the</strong> Imperial<br />

Boat Club Steve Trapmore, who<br />

w<strong>on</strong> gold <strong>in</strong> Sydney <strong>in</strong> 2000.<br />

“Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> Boat Club is<br />

have some excellent coaches and<br />

athletes and <strong>the</strong>y’ve all <strong>be</strong>en so<br />

supportive of my tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.” Despite<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunities as a rower at<br />

Imperial, Melanie found juggl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her passi<strong>on</strong>s hard. She attended<br />

weekend tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessi<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

camps with <strong>the</strong> GB team and made<br />

it <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> World Champi<strong>on</strong>ships <strong>in</strong><br />

2010 as a reserve, but unable <strong>to</strong><br />

give her sport<strong>in</strong>g pursuits her full<br />

attenti<strong>on</strong>, she wasn’t selected<br />

<strong>to</strong> race. Melanie knew that if she<br />

was go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> have a shot at <strong>the</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Olympic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s she’d need <strong>to</strong> dedicate<br />

herself <strong>to</strong> row<strong>in</strong>g so she put her<br />

Melanie hopes <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> chosen <strong>to</strong><br />

row <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> quad scull (a boat with<br />

four people with two oars each)<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Olympic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s and has ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

trial com<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong> mid-March. “It’s<br />

so competitive at <strong>the</strong> moment as<br />

every<strong>on</strong>e wants <strong>to</strong> get chosen for<br />

<strong>the</strong> boats but, despite that, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is a really good team spirit,” she<br />

says. “It’s really important <strong>to</strong> get <strong>to</strong><br />

know and understand each o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

as it helps you <strong>to</strong> work <strong>be</strong>tter <strong>on</strong><br />

Melanie lives <strong>in</strong> Mortlake and<br />

commutes six days a week <strong>to</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> GB row<strong>in</strong>g team at<br />

<strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Olympic</str<strong>on</strong>g> Centre just outside<br />

Read<strong>in</strong>g. On Sundays she jo<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong><br />

Imperial teams at <strong>the</strong> Boat Club.<br />

“To tra<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Olympic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s you have<br />

<strong>to</strong> have excepti<strong>on</strong>al motivati<strong>on</strong> levels<br />

and <strong>be</strong> <strong>in</strong>credibly competitive<br />

and robust <strong>to</strong> handle <strong>the</strong> pressure,”<br />

says Imperial’s Head of Sport Neil<br />

Mosley. “We are <strong>in</strong>credibly proud<br />

of our students and excited <strong>the</strong>y<br />

might have a chance <strong>to</strong> make it <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Games,” he adds.<br />

A typical day of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g starts<br />

at 7.30, and <strong>the</strong> team uses <strong>the</strong><br />

adrenal<strong>in</strong>-fuelled music of Bey<strong>on</strong>cé<br />

<strong>to</strong> spur <strong>the</strong>m <strong>on</strong> through 100 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> row<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e. Hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and a rest. After <strong>the</strong> break, <strong>the</strong><br />

team head <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> river <strong>to</strong> practise<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual coaches for<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r couple of hours. “Normally<br />

<strong>the</strong> coach makes me work <strong>on</strong> a<br />

specific technique,” says Melanie.<br />

“For example, when you race you<br />

slide forward and <strong>the</strong>n put your<br />

blade <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water, so he might tell<br />

me <strong>to</strong> do that a bit quicker or put<br />

my body <strong>in</strong> a different positi<strong>on</strong>,”<br />

she expla<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

Melanie descri<strong>be</strong>s <strong>the</strong> sound<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g a race when everyth<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> plan: “When you have got<br />

a good rhythm go<strong>in</strong>g and all you<br />

can hear is <strong>the</strong> carb<strong>on</strong> oars lightly<br />

hitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> water, you can really<br />

relax <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> it.”<br />

It’s undoubtedly hard work<br />

but Melanie is motivated by <strong>the</strong><br />

memory of her team miss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

goal <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2011 World Champi<strong>on</strong>ships.<br />

“We messed up <strong>on</strong>e of<br />

our races and it was <strong>the</strong> biggest<br />

disappo<strong>in</strong>tment I’ve ever had <strong>in</strong> my<br />

life. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n I’ve <strong>be</strong>en f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g it<br />

much easier <strong>to</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>be</strong>cause I th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

whatever happens this summer, I’ll<br />

kick myself if I didn’t try everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that I could, <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> as good as I can<br />

<strong>be</strong>. It really is amaz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> have <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunity <strong>to</strong> try and <strong>be</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>world</strong> at someth<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

Melanie f<strong>in</strong>ds it reassur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

know that <strong>be</strong>y<strong>on</strong>d <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Olympic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s she<br />

still has someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> look forward<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong> Septem<strong>be</strong>r when she returns<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> third year of her medical<br />

degree at Imperial. “I really love<br />

study<strong>in</strong>g and when <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Olympic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s<br />

are over, I want <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish off my<br />

degree and <strong>be</strong>come a doc<strong>to</strong>r for <strong>the</strong><br />

help <strong>to</strong> give me perspective when it<br />

gets stressful.”

Smart tactics<br />

As any football fan knows, a w<strong>in</strong> is forged through hard<br />

preparati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and a plethora of decisi<strong>on</strong>s off <strong>the</strong> pitch.<br />

Success requires careful <strong>in</strong>vestment, <strong>the</strong> right comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

players and smart tactics. For committed Chelsea fan, and new<br />

Chief F<strong>in</strong>ancial Officer Muir Sanders<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> activities at home<br />

ground Stamford Bridge are <strong>the</strong> subject of much discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

with his family, who are also ardent supporters of <strong>the</strong> team.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> Sanders<strong>on</strong> household<br />

weighs up <strong>the</strong> outlook for<br />

Chelsea’s year of transiti<strong>on</strong> under<br />

<strong>the</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>able new management<br />

of Andre Villas-Boas, <strong>in</strong> Muir’s<br />

role at Imperial he c<strong>on</strong>siders <strong>the</strong><br />

impact of Higher Educati<strong>on</strong>’s own<br />

transiti<strong>on</strong>al period: public fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for universities is decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, preparati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue for <strong>the</strong> Research<br />

Excellence Framework (REF) <strong>in</strong> 2014,<br />

and this year sees <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troducti<strong>on</strong><br />

of a new fees and f<strong>in</strong>ancial support<br />

regime for Home and EU undergraduate<br />

students.<br />

“For me this role is about<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g Imperial’s research<br />

and academic missi<strong>on</strong> and <strong>to</strong> help<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sider <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic tradeoffs of<br />

<strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong>s we make <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next<br />

5 – 10 years. My job is <strong>to</strong> say, ‘<strong>the</strong>se<br />

are <strong>the</strong> implicati<strong>on</strong>s,’” says Muir,<br />

who jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Novem<strong>be</strong>r 2011.<br />

After three m<strong>on</strong>ths, Muir is still<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> know <strong>the</strong> College. “As a<br />

CFO it’s very easy <strong>to</strong> just focus <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> num<strong>be</strong>rs, and sit <strong>in</strong> my office<br />

disc<strong>on</strong>nected from reality. But you<br />

have <strong>to</strong> go out and talk <strong>to</strong> people,<br />

understand what <strong>the</strong> challenges<br />

are, and what it is that is <strong>on</strong><br />

people’s m<strong>in</strong>ds.”<br />

Muir’s fact-f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g missi<strong>on</strong> has<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded trips <strong>to</strong> Silwood, Hammersmith,<br />

St Mary’s and Imperial West,<br />

as well as <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> student accommodati<strong>on</strong><br />

sites. “I’ve <strong>be</strong>en <strong>to</strong> visit<br />

departments, see <strong>the</strong> research that<br />

is go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>, sit <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong> lectures and<br />

talk <strong>to</strong> students. It’s <strong>be</strong>en fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> picture of what Imperial<br />

looks like is start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> take shape.”<br />

Passi<strong>on</strong> for physics<br />

As a child Muir’s desire <strong>to</strong> ‘get<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart of <strong>the</strong> problem’<br />

drew him <strong>to</strong> physics, which<br />

he <strong>the</strong>n went <strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong> study at<br />

Cambridge. “For me, physics<br />

is about how th<strong>in</strong>gs work <strong>in</strong><br />

a fundamental way. You can<br />

take a disparate range of phenomena<br />

and break <strong>the</strong>m down<br />

<strong>to</strong> a set of simple equati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

which <strong>the</strong>n descri<strong>be</strong> what is<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>,” he expla<strong>in</strong>s. “If<br />

you are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> a good<br />

CFO, you have <strong>to</strong> cut through<br />

a large amount of c<strong>on</strong>flict<strong>in</strong>g<br />

data and say, ‘this is what it<br />

boils down <strong>to</strong>,’” he adds.<br />

Career path<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g his time at<br />

Cambridge, Muir jo<strong>in</strong>ed au<strong>to</strong>motive<br />

Turner<br />

and Newell as<br />

a manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<br />

and spent time<br />

This led <strong>to</strong><br />

most recent role as partner he<br />

sec<strong>to</strong>r. Whilst at Booz he<br />

spent time as <strong>the</strong> UK manag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

partner where <strong>on</strong>e of his<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> challenges was <strong>to</strong> get<br />

a group of entrepreneurial<br />

partners <strong>to</strong> align <strong>in</strong> a comm<strong>on</strong><br />

directi<strong>on</strong>, which he descri<strong>be</strong>d<br />

as ‘like herd<strong>in</strong>g cats’. By<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trast, at Imperial Muir<br />

praises <strong>the</strong> will<strong>in</strong>gness of staff<br />

<strong>to</strong> work <strong>in</strong> partnership <strong>to</strong>wards<br />

a comm<strong>on</strong> goal. “There’s a<br />

str<strong>on</strong>g sense of purpose,”<br />

he says. “It’s a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and that is what makes it so<br />

motivat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong> work<br />

“universities<br />

we need <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vest<br />

Away from <strong>the</strong> office, Muir<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>ds: “To <strong>be</strong> musical - I<br />

can’t even clap <strong>in</strong> time. I’m<br />

always off <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>at, and not <strong>in</strong><br />

a Jazz sense.”<br />

Forecast<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> future<br />

Muir’s <strong>in</strong>itial assessment <strong>on</strong><br />

Imag<strong>in</strong>e a police car as it speeds past you, sirens blaz<strong>in</strong>g. The sounds you hear<br />

as it rushes <strong>to</strong>wards, past and away from you are all very different <strong>in</strong> pitch. This<br />

is due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Doppler effect; an effect that occurs when <strong>the</strong> distance <strong>be</strong>tween a<br />

radiati<strong>on</strong> source and observer changes, i.e. if <strong>on</strong>e is mov<strong>in</strong>g. The sound waves<br />

travell<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> siren <strong>to</strong> your ear are compressed as <strong>the</strong> car moves<br />

<strong>to</strong>wards you, and stretched out as it moves away, similar <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

dynamics of a spr<strong>in</strong>g. Due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> movement of <strong>the</strong> car relative <strong>to</strong><br />

your ear, <strong>the</strong> received waves are of a different frequency <strong>to</strong> those<br />

emitted. A wave is characterised by a given frequency,<br />

wave speed and associated wavelength. A change<br />

<strong>in</strong> wavelength – <strong>the</strong> distance from peak <strong>to</strong><br />

peak of <strong>the</strong> wave – corresp<strong>on</strong>ds <strong>to</strong> a shift <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wave’s period. A higher pitch is heard as <strong>the</strong><br />

sound emitter approaches and a lower pitch is heard<br />

as it moves away.<br />

A haka is a dance which comes from Maori culture<br />

that was traditi<strong>on</strong>ally performed <strong>be</strong>fore warr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g cerem<strong>on</strong>ies, <strong>in</strong> cultural competiti<strong>on</strong>s, or<br />

<strong>be</strong>fore sports games.<br />

My school rugby and volleyball teams used <strong>to</strong> perform<br />

a haka <strong>be</strong>fore games and we spent a lot of<br />

time learn<strong>in</strong>g how <strong>to</strong> do it properly. It really does make<br />

you focus <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> task ahead and get you <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right frame of m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

renewable energy resources<br />

of <strong>the</strong> future and was<br />

impressed by his <strong>in</strong>quisitiveness<br />

and passi<strong>on</strong> for<br />

renewable energy. Through<br />

years of explorati<strong>on</strong>, Nate<br />

has proved that <strong>in</strong> order<br />

<strong>to</strong> meet <strong>the</strong><br />

global energy<br />

demand of<br />

13-15 terawatts<br />

(human c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong><br />

much power for a susta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

period of time is solar, which<br />

provides over 120,000<br />

terawatts annually –enough<br />

<strong>to</strong> meet human demand.<br />

The sec<strong>on</strong>d runner-up was<br />

nuclear – <strong>to</strong> meet our energy<br />

demand susta<strong>in</strong>ably, we<br />

would have <strong>to</strong> build <strong>on</strong>e new<br />

power plant every o<strong>the</strong>r day<br />

The pukana is a really important part. It’s when you show expressi<strong>on</strong> with your<br />

whole face <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g your t<strong>on</strong>gue and eyes, and it’s unique.<br />

The words <strong>in</strong> a haka are always emotive s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t is <strong>to</strong> get you fired up.<br />

A good example comes from Kapa o pango, which is a haka <strong>the</strong> All Black’s<br />

sometimes perform. The first l<strong>in</strong>es are “Kia whakata hoki au i ahau. Hi aue,<br />

hi.” These powerful words, when translated, mean “Let me go back <strong>to</strong> my first<br />

gasp of breath. Let my life force return <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth.”<br />

Not every<strong>on</strong>e agrees that we should <strong>be</strong> allowed <strong>to</strong> perform <strong>the</strong> haka <strong>be</strong>fore<br />

sport<strong>in</strong>g matches <strong>be</strong>cause it might give an unfair advantage. I th<strong>in</strong>k it’s an<br />

What are <strong>the</strong> challenges <strong>in</strong>volved?<br />

Firstly, it’s most useful <strong>to</strong> m<strong>on</strong>i<strong>to</strong>r<br />

an implanted microelectrode typically<br />

picks up signals from multiple neur<strong>on</strong>s<br />

loret<strong>to</strong> O’Callaghan, former<br />

disabilities Officer, died <strong>on</strong><br />

4 decem<strong>be</strong>r 2011. Emeritus Professor<br />

Rees Rawl<strong>in</strong>gs (Educati<strong>on</strong>al Quality<br />

Office) pays tribute:<br />

“Loret<strong>to</strong> was born <strong>in</strong> March 1944 at<br />

Ventnor <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Isle of Wight. She came <strong>to</strong> L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> aged<br />

18, where she worked <strong>in</strong> PR and publish<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>be</strong>fore jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> College <strong>in</strong> 1988 as a Student Accommodati<strong>on</strong> Officer.<br />

Her role was <strong>to</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>the</strong> allocati<strong>on</strong> of students <strong>to</strong><br />

halls of residence. Over time she <strong>be</strong>came more and more<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved with students with disabilities, and this was<br />

acknowledged by her appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>in</strong> Decem<strong>be</strong>r 2001 as<br />

<strong>the</strong> College’s first Disabilities Officer, a post she held until<br />

her retirement <strong>in</strong> Decem<strong>be</strong>r 2007.<br />

Loret<strong>to</strong> was always will<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> battle <strong>on</strong> <strong>be</strong>half<br />

of deserv<strong>in</strong>g students and <strong>to</strong>ok every opportunity <strong>to</strong> promote<br />

awareness of disabilities through formal and <strong>in</strong>formal<br />

discussi<strong>on</strong>s with both staff and students. She ga<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

respect and c<strong>on</strong>fidence from <strong>the</strong> College community,<br />

which was essential for <strong>the</strong> development of her role.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> late 1960s she lived <strong>in</strong> Queen’s Club Gardens,<br />

where she rema<strong>in</strong>ed for <strong>the</strong> rest of her life. It was<br />

here that she met her c<strong>on</strong>stant compani<strong>on</strong>, Chris<strong>to</strong>pher.<br />

Her diligence and hospitable nature led <strong>to</strong> many calls <strong>on</strong><br />

her time and she worked hard for More House, <strong>the</strong> Roman<br />

Catholic Chapla<strong>in</strong>cy for Imperial, and <strong>the</strong> Queen’s Club<br />

Gardens Residents’ Associati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Loret<strong>to</strong> will <strong>be</strong> greatly missed by all those who knew her.”<br />

Peter Sulsh, Chief Services technician (Chemistry) 40 years<br />

Peter Sulsh jo<strong>in</strong>ed Imperial <strong>in</strong> 1972 as a Junior<br />

Technician <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department of Chemistry and<br />

this February he celebrates an impressive 40<br />

years at <strong>the</strong> College. His job <strong>in</strong>volves lead<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

team of six, who provide technical support <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> College’s chemistry researchers. The support<br />

can range from eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g projects, electr<strong>on</strong>ics<br />

design, mechanical work or even <strong>be</strong>spoke<br />

glass blow<strong>in</strong>g. One of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>novati<strong>on</strong>s Peter<br />

and his team have developed is a special tu<strong>be</strong><br />

for carry<strong>in</strong>g samples across campus, so <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can <strong>be</strong> tested for nuclear magnetic res<strong>on</strong>ance.<br />

“Like many of <strong>the</strong> projects I’ve worked <strong>on</strong>, this was about mak<strong>in</strong>g life easier and safer for<br />

researchers,” expla<strong>in</strong>s Peter. Peter notes that <strong>in</strong>teract<strong>in</strong>g with staff and students from all<br />

over <strong>the</strong> <strong>world</strong> is <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st part of his job. “Be<strong>in</strong>g here for 40 years means I’ve got a lot of<br />

s<strong>to</strong>ries about <strong>the</strong> College, some of which shouldn’t <strong>be</strong> repeated!” he adds.<br />

What do you c<strong>on</strong>sider your<br />

greatest achievement dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

your time as Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal?<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k I leave <strong>the</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

School <strong>in</strong> a much <strong>be</strong>tter place<br />

than I found it. We are very proud<br />

of hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>be</strong>aten Oxford and<br />

Cambridge <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last Research<br />

Assessment Exercise and of our<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>al and academic staff<br />

who do a fantastic job.<br />

How do you see <strong>the</strong><br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ship <strong>be</strong>tween <strong>the</strong><br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess School and <strong>the</strong> rest<br />

of <strong>the</strong> College?<br />

Imperial has <strong>be</strong>en magnificently<br />

supportive. Quite rightly, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were a bit sceptical at first, but<br />

as we have proved ourselves,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have seen <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>nefits and<br />

created <strong>the</strong> opportunities for us<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> able <strong>to</strong> achieve our aims.<br />

What are you go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> miss <strong>the</strong> most?<br />

The 6.00 starts! No, seriously, <strong>in</strong> this job,<br />

you build a community of colleagues and<br />

friends and that will <strong>be</strong> a very big change.<br />

Though, I will <strong>be</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g for my next<br />

challenge <strong>in</strong> retirement...<br />

Do you know what that is likely <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong>?<br />

Head of English cricket perhaps?! Every<strong>on</strong>e<br />

says take your time, so I’m follow<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

advice and am relaxed about it. Indeed, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> immediate future, I am go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> support<br />

Dot [Griffiths] <strong>in</strong> her role as Act<strong>in</strong>g Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

and ensure a smooth transiti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Any words of wisdom<br />

for your successor?<br />

Go for it! A Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal cannot achieve much s<strong>in</strong>gle-handedly<br />

and a great part is <strong>the</strong> team you<br />

build around you. I’ve <strong>be</strong>en very fortunate.<br />

With a School that is <strong>in</strong> great shape, it should<br />

<strong>be</strong> a great challenge for whoever follows.<br />

What do you want <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong><br />

when you grow up?<br />

last year dr shane Berg<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Intra European Fellow <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

department of Chemistry,<br />

pictured, c<strong>on</strong>ducted a survey<br />

of postdocs <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d out<br />

about <strong>the</strong>ir career ambiti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

He expla<strong>in</strong>s why it’s important<br />

for postdocs <strong>to</strong> have an<br />

exit plan.<br />

“The majority of PhD graduates <strong>be</strong>come postdocs <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>ses. Better m<strong>on</strong>ey for more or less<br />

<strong>the</strong> same work is extremely appeal<strong>in</strong>g. Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Investiga<strong>to</strong>r<br />

are often eager <strong>to</strong> employ postdocs ra<strong>the</strong>r than PhD<br />

students as <strong>the</strong>y are a quantifiable risk – you have ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

a str<strong>on</strong>g publicati<strong>on</strong> record from your days as a graduate<br />

student or you d<strong>on</strong>’t. Simply put, postdoc positi<strong>on</strong>s are<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>ably paid and not extremely difficult <strong>to</strong> obta<strong>in</strong>.<br />

For most people, <strong>the</strong> big questi<strong>on</strong> is what <strong>to</strong> do after<br />

your time as a postdoc. Such positi<strong>on</strong>s are a means <strong>to</strong><br />

an end, seldom an end <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves. Thus, <strong>on</strong>e would<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>e that those who set off down this path have<br />

well thought out career plans. I recently surveyed <strong>the</strong><br />

postdocs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department of Chemistry and found more<br />

than 50 per cent of postdocs do not have any plans.<br />

More worry<strong>in</strong>gly, I found <strong>the</strong> l<strong>on</strong>ger <strong>the</strong>y rema<strong>in</strong>ed as a<br />

postdoc, <strong>the</strong> less likely <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>to</strong> have an exit plan.<br />

Female postdocs <strong>to</strong>ok career plann<strong>in</strong>g more seriously than<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir male colleagues but <strong>the</strong>y secure significantly fewer<br />

academic posts when <strong>the</strong>y leave. Why is this?<br />

In <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g weeks, postdocs will receive a survey<br />

prob<strong>in</strong>g career ambiti<strong>on</strong>s and career plann<strong>in</strong>g. This will <strong>be</strong><br />

run jo<strong>in</strong>tly <strong>be</strong>tween <strong>the</strong> Postdoc Development Centre (PDC)<br />

and postdoc reps <strong>in</strong> every department. I would encourage<br />

all postdocs <strong>to</strong> take part. This data will <strong>be</strong> <strong>in</strong>valuable<br />

– spark<strong>in</strong>g much needed debate and perhaps help mould<br />

future college strategies <strong>in</strong> this area. As with research <strong>in</strong><br />

all of our discipl<strong>in</strong>es, well grounded arguments based <strong>on</strong><br />

figures will carry <strong>the</strong> most weight.”<br />
