SCHS Presented
Charlotte’s Web
November 2011
By Bob DeWeerd
SCHS drama presented Joseph Robinette’s
adaptation of E.B. White’s classic story Charlotte’s
Web Thursday, November 17 through Saturday,
November 19.
Thank you to those who attended our fall play, we
hoped you enjoyed the evening. Thank you to the
directors, cast, and crew who did an amazing job
telling this beloved story.
Colorful Musical coming to the SCHS Stage
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
By Bob DeWeerd & Ryan VandenHeuvel
This spring, the joyous sounds of Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor® Dreamcoat will echo through the South
Christian Auditorium. Three shows, scheduled for March 22
- 24 at 7:00 p.m., will be presented and will be sure to please.
The Musical is based on the story of Joseph (Sam Atsma)
from the book of Genesis. The show incorporates fun music
and danceable tunes to tell the story. Three narrators
(Bridget Hemingway, Alison Norman, and Abby Genzink)
guide the audience through the story and introduce us to
many interesting characters.
The story starts by introducing Jacob (Mark Vander Stel) and
his many sons to the audience. Because he liked Joseph best,
Jacob gave Joseph his famous colored coat which infuriated
Joseph’s brothers. To add to the brothers’ dislike,
Joseph also tells of “prophetic dreams” where he is
over the brothers in authority. Even more upset
and jealous, the brothers sell Joseph. The
brothers, led by Reuben (Mike De Weerd) and
Simeon (Josh Duemler), tell Jacob of Joesph’s
demise in “One More Angel in Heaven,” and
the story continues.
Back in Canaan, Isachaar (Evan Davies) and the brothers
lament “Those Canaan Days” when things were good.
Their need for food eventually brings them to Egypt where
they “Grovel, Grovel” at Joseph’s feet. Though he recognizes
them, Joseph does not reveal himself immediately. Instead,
he has Benjamin (Sean Brower) framed which causes the
brothers, led by Judah (Jon Gorter), to plead for Benjamin’s
freedom. Soon, however, Joseph reveals his identity to the
brothers, and celebration ensues.
Overall, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat
is a show that is sure to please. Such songs as “Joseph’s
Coat,” “Go, Go, Go Joseph,” “Song of the King,” and many
more will set your toes tapping and your mouth humming.
March
22 - 24, 2012
7:00 p.m.
Tickets, at $7 each, will go on sale in the South
Christian High School office beginning
Wednesday, March 14. Don’t miss this fun
family show. See you there!
Soon, Joseph is placed in Potiphar’s house (Tyler
Groenendal) where he rises to a position of
authority. However, Potiphar’s wife (Bethany Fennema)
soon has Joseph thrown in jail. In jail Joseph meets
Pharaoh’s butler (Luke Mc Connell) and interprets a
favorable dream for him. Eventually, this leads Joseph into
the service of Pharaoh (Joel Theule) who himself had strange
dreams that required interpreting. Because of God’s
guidance, Joseph is eventually raised to second in command
in Egypt where he is put in charge of the food resources of
the kingdom in anticipation of the seven lean years.
Donations from Donations
By George Guichelaar, Principal
When SCHS students attend sporting events,
they bleed blue and white. Four times a year
they bleed only red when they donate blood to
the Michigan Blood Center. Last year the age
for donating was lowered from 17 to 16 and that
dramatically increased the number of students
eligible to give blood.
On Monday, January 30 a twist was added to the
blood drive. The Michigan Blood Center
donated $10.00 to SCHS for each student who
attempted to give blood. We decided that his
money will be donated to pay for Typhoid
vaccinations for orphans at a school in Kenya.
SCHS graduate, Justin Haan is working in
Kenya this year and has been involved in a
school of orphans that regularly suffers from
Typhoid outbreaks. We hope to have more than
$500.00 from the blood drive to contribute.
SCHS February Blood Drive.
Supporting Justin Haan, SCHS Grad, with his
ministry helping the needy in Africa. The dollars
will specifically go towards needed vaccines.
Student Volunteer Organization
Spotlight: The Inner City Christian Federation
By Brent Springvloed
Almost every Tuesday after school, a group of South
Christian students head out together to assist the Inner
City Christian Federation (ICCF) in its mission to offer
affordable housing in Grand Rapids. Students participate
in a variety of tasks that do not require any special skills.
For instance, students have helped with the final steps of
preparing housing for new tenants by hanging blinds,
cleaning tubs and showers, changing light bulbs, and
completing other jobs that need to be done. Other
opportunities to serve through ICCF include cleaning,
weeding, sorting, and passing out Thanksgiving baskets.
Even though the time helping ICCF each week is short
(students return by 5:00), SCHS students have proven to
be a valuable asset to this organization due to their many
hands and diligent efforts.
Along with ICCF, South Christian students are serving at
other places in their community as well. On Mondays,
you can find students helping with Kids’ Life Bible Club
at SE Kelloggsville Elementary. On the fourth
Wednesday of the month, you will find a group making
sack suppers at Kids’ Food Basket for low income
students in the Grand Rapids area. Students can also be
found throughout the week tutoring at Southwood
Elementary school or lending a helping hand at the
neighborhood ministry Streams of Hope.
A TRADITION CONTINUED
Since the 1960’s, our Student Council has
conducted a food drive for families in need. Working
through local organizations this year, 70-80 families
were identified for us to serve. The entire student
body collected non-perishable food items and
Student Council purchased a Christmas gift for each
child. The boxes were delivered by students the
week before Christmas and were gratefully received
by the families.
Thank You For Your Faithfulness
An Advancement Office Update
By Larry Plaisier, Director of Advancement
FOUNDATION FUND
Businesses and individuals who maintain a yearly
membership in the Foundation are an important
part of the ongoing growth and are a vital link
between the South Christian High School of today
and the South Christian High School of tomorrow.
Some of you became Foundation members at yearend.
Thank you! If you missed the opportunity,
please take a couple minutes to visit our website
(www.schs.org, Advancement Office pull-down
menu/Online Giving (link)) and become a
Foundation member today. We need each and
every one of you.
Please look for a mailing in the near future
from the Advancement Office.
THANK YOU
We give thanks for the many faithful supporters
who contributed to various causes at South
Christian in 2011. Our total contributions for the
year were just under $540,000. Some of the more
popular categories were:
~ Annual Fund $138,000
~ Tuition Assistance $177,000
~ Foundation $73,000
We also conducted a Phon-A-Thon this fall
through J. Milito & Associates to a cross section of
people. $59,000 was pledged and $39,000 of that
is already in. We trust the remaining $20,000 will
be coming in the first quarter of 2012.
Thank you for your faithful giving. In 2012 it is our
desire to get even more people to put South
Christian on their giving list.
FIRST QUARTER GIVING
Although most people traditionally donate at yearend,
some of you find it better to donate at the end
of the first quarter of the year.
We need all of you! If this is true for you, please
consider a gift to South Christian between now and
March 30. The categories of Annual Fund, Tuition
Assistance and Foundation will continue to be a
priority for us in 2012.
CHANGES
By Jeff Gorter, Board President
Change, it has been said, is the only constant. That
will certainly be true for South Christian in the
coming year. Plans are being laid for major
improvements to our facilities, curriculum reviews
are expanding the number of AP classes available,
and technology advances are pushing a reassessment
of how education is delivered in a 21 st
century classroom. These are just a few of the
initiatives gaining momentum at SCHS. While
challenging, this is also an incredibly exciting time.
As a community we have the opportunity to refresh
our vision once again, to capture the energy to
improve what we are doing today, while at the same
time positioning SCHS for tomorrow. We face these
challenges humbly, seeking the Lord’s wisdom at
every step. We face them boldly, trusting in God’s
leading. We face them calmly, secure in His
faithfulness.
This year will also see another change for SCHS –
the retirement of Larry Plaisier, long-time Principal
and recent Advancement Director. For 29 years
Larry has served South Christian with a steady hand
and a cheerful spirit, setting the tone for countless
students who have passed
through our halls over that
time. His recent work as
Advancement Director has
laid the groundwork for our
coming improvements, details
of which you will be seeing in
the next few weeks and
months. It is with profound
gratitude and appreciation
that we pray God’s richest
blessings for this next chapter
in his life. Join me in dropping
and doing 29 symbolic
pushups in honor of Larry!
SOUTH CHRISTIAN HILITES Winter 2012
Celebrating 20-Years of Service
In 1992 the ninth grade was moved from the middle schools to the high school. Of
course, adding more students meant adding more teachers. This year we celebrate
twenty years of service to South Christian from six teachers.
Mr. Ken
Hiskes
Social Studies
During the school day, Mr. Hiskes
teaches Government, AP
Government, Social Problems, and
World Affairs. After school, he
coaches the varsity basketball team.
Students appreciate Mr. Hiskes’
tremendous knowledge of his
subject, his sense of humor, and the
integrity with which he teaches and
coaches. He has learned from his
students that it can be easy to be
open about one’s faith. During his
30 years of teaching, he observed
that one of the biggest changes is
how open students are about their
faith.
Mr. Hiskes and his wife, Jackie, have
three adult sons, all who graduated
from South Christian. When he is
not teaching or coaching, he enjoys
playing golf and reading about
baseball and Presidents. An
interesting fact about Mr. Hiskes is
that after college he almost followed
a career in the foreign service but
decided, eventually, that teaching
was for him.
Mrs. Jill
Haagsma
Science
Mrs. Haagsma teaches Physical
Science and Chemistry. Her
students appreciate her kind and
gentle spirit which characterizes
how she teaches the complexities of
Chemistry. Her favorite part of
teaching is the Eureka moments
that students experience in the
learning process. She also enjoys
the fact that teaching ninth grade
Physical Science gives her the
opportunity to know all the
students. She considers it an
amazing privilege to be part of the
academic, social, and spiritual
growth of the students at South
Christian.
Mrs. Haagsma and her husband,
Dave, live in Byron Center. They
have four children who are all
involved in either sports, music or
4-H. In addition to attending their
children’s events, they also find
time to attend South Christian
athletic events. They also enjoy
family road trips that include
tenting in places like Key West,
Key Largo, Yellowstone, and Tom’s
Cove.
Mr. Jim
Hoekstra
Religion
Mr. Hoekstra teaches Church
History and Religion 10. Students
appreciate Mr. Hoekstra’s
dedication to his students and his
desire for them to live godly lives
and make good decisions. His
greatest satisfaction in teaching
comes when students give heartfelt
expression of their faith. He has
learned from students that we all
grow, learn, and express our faith
in an awesome variety of ways.
Mr. Hoekstra’s hobbies are
collecting M&M collectibles and
watching the Detroit Pistons.
Staying connected with youth is
important to Mr. Hoekstra. In
addition to being involved in the
youth programs at his church, he
has recently been appointed as the
Chaplain for the Calvinist Cadet
Corps. Mr. Hoekstra and his wife,
Cindi, live in Kentwood. Their
two sons are graduates of South
Christian.
Thank you for your Dedication
By George Guilchelaar, Principal
As I ponder the gifts of these six teachers who combine for 120 years of service to
South Christian, I give thanks to God for their commitment to teaching our children, to
being solid Christian role models , and for enriching the lives that they touch.
SOUTH CHRISTIAN HILITES Winter 2012
Mr. Mike
Miedema
English
Mr. Miedema has taught a variety
of English classes at South. This
year he is teaching AP English,
American Lit, and Modern Fiction.
Students appreciate his delightful
sense of humor and his respect for
students. Regarding teaching, he
can’t imagine anything more
satisfying than a good lesson that
excites students as they soak in the
knowledge. Mr. Miedema says
students have taught him that there
are many different ways of being
intelligent and lots of different kinds
of success in doing kingdom work.
He also observes that students are
better ambassadors of grace today
than when he was in high school.
When not busy with work and
family events, he buys, repairs, and
sells small engine power equipment.
Mr. Miedema and his wife, Nancy,
have five children ranging in ages
from twelve to twenty-seven. He
lives in his great grandpa’s old
house and worships in the church
attended as a child. He considers
himself a true home-boy!
Mr. Rod
VanDyk
Math
After some years in the real estate
business and accounting business,
Mr. VanDyke decided to become a
math teacher. Currently he is
teaching Geometry and
Accounting. Students appreciate
his sense of humor and teaching
practices which are effective, but
sometimes out of the ordinary.
The semi-amazing Rodini comes to
mind! Two of Mr. VanDyke’s least
favorite memories at SCHS are
teaching an entire class with an
“unfortunate” rip in his pants and
performing as Elvis to raise money
for the Christmas Drive.
Mr. VanDyke lives in Hudsonville
with his wife, Julie. They have 3
daughters, one who graduated
from South Christian, one who is a
senior at Unity Christian High
School, and one who is at
Hudsonville Christian. A unique
fact about Mr. VanDyke is that at
one time he owned an airplane
with the intent to get his pilot’s
license. After further reflection (and
his wife’s encouragement!) he
decided that the idea of him flying
an airplane was not a good one. He
no longer owns an airplane.
7
Mrs. Ellie
VanKeulen
Inclusive Ed
As our Inclusive Education
teacher, Mrs. Van Keulen blesses
our students who have significant
physical, emotional, or cognitive
needs. Partnering with the
Christian Learning Center, Mrs.
Van Keulen has helped her
students navigate their four years
of high school. She has had a
huge impact on the culture of the
school by establishing the
Connections program. In this
program she has set up
opportunities for the entire
student body to reach our students
who have significant needs.
Students appreciate the boundless
love Mrs. VanKeulen has for all
students. One of the favorite
aspects of her job is how her
students bring such joy to others.
Mrs. VanKeulen observes that
teens, filled with God-given
talents, are an amazing blessing to
this world.
She lives in Grand Rapids with
her husband, Rob, having raised
four children of her own. Her
hobbies include gardening, music,
and reading. She is the oldest of
48 grandchildren!

Chapel
A Reviving Love
By George Guichelaar
When I talk to public school principals about having
school assemblies with the entire student body, they often
express the idea that they would rather go to the dentist!
(No offense to our dentists, please!) They avoid student
assemblies because the environment of a student assembly
seems to produce unruly behavior which is difficult to
control in a large group setting. I usually remain silent
during these conversations.
The reason for my silence is that I have a very opposite
perspective. At SCHS the students assemble in the
auditorium every Tuesday and Thursday. Of course, we
don’t call it an assembly, we call it chapel. I remind
myself of the incredible blessing that as principal my job
includes going to chapel being led in worship by high
school students.
Chapels are planned and led by the Christian Ministries
class under the leadership of Mr. Everhart. Last summer
they prepared the theme of “A reviving love” (Ephesians
2:1-7) which has been the basis of the chapels they plan
every Tuesday and Thursday. On Thursday, January 5
we had a special chapel in the gym. The students decided
that if they were going to lead a chapel about prayer, and
how we are revived by Christ’s love, it would be better for
us to do it instead of just talk about it. Students were
invited to come down to the gym floor and were
organized into small groups. Each group spent 20
minutes sharing items for prayer and then praying.
By
Grace
through Faith
Ephesians
2:1-7
The picture below shows how the chapel concluded
with the entire student body singing “Lord, Make
Me a Sanctuary” standing around a cross in the
middle of the gym. It was a blessing to be a
part of this worship time. I would not have
rather been at the dentist.
