Graduation 2012
The Mace<br />
The mace symbolises <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>and</strong> natural<br />
elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong>s</strong> <strong>and</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Scotl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
<strong>and</strong> was commissioned to mark <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong>s</strong> <strong>and</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s. It was on display<br />
at <strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> UHI when Her Majesty The Queen <strong>and</strong><br />
His Royal Highness <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh visited us in<br />
July 2012 <strong>and</strong> this is <strong>the</strong> first time it has been used at a<br />
<strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> UHI graduation ceremony.<br />
Gifted by <strong>the</strong> universities <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, Aberdeen <strong>and</strong><br />
Strathclyde for use in graduation ceremonies across <strong>the</strong><br />
UHI partnership, <strong>the</strong> mace was designed by Edinburgh<br />
<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Art’s jewellery <strong>and</strong> silversmithing department,<br />
<strong>and</strong> made by Hamilton <strong>and</strong> Inches.<br />
The mace is made from indigenous Scottish light ash,<br />
silver, gold <strong>and</strong> mixed metals. The ornamentation<br />
symbolises s<strong>and</strong> or beaches, water <strong>and</strong> air, while <strong>the</strong><br />
lower mount is adorned with three 18ct yellow gold wires<br />
depicting mountains. A concave plate is mounted at <strong>the</strong><br />
very bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mace, reflecting <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> water<br />
<strong>and</strong> waves.
Welcome to <strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> UHI’s<br />
2012 Graduation Ceremony<br />
I am delighted to welcome you to <strong>Perth</strong> Concert Hall<br />
for our 2012 graduation ceremony. We are here to<br />
honour our graduating students, as this very special<br />
day is <strong>the</strong>ir reward for much hard work <strong>and</strong> dedication.<br />
As well as helping our students to earn academic<br />
awards, we work hard to ensure <strong>the</strong>y enjoy a<br />
responsive <strong>and</strong> engaging experience at <strong>College</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> are given opportunities to develop skills <strong>and</strong><br />
experience relevant to <strong>the</strong>ir future careers <strong>and</strong><br />
aspirations. I would like to commend our graduates<br />
for <strong>the</strong>ir achievements <strong>and</strong> wish <strong>the</strong>m every success<br />
for <strong>the</strong> future.<br />
This past year has been one <strong>of</strong> building upon <strong>the</strong><br />
notable successes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous year. Our curriculum<br />
has been refreshed to ensure a better fit with <strong>the</strong><br />
needs <strong>of</strong> employers: we have had two very positive<br />
quality engagements with National Agencies across<br />
<strong>the</strong> entire range <strong>of</strong> our academic provision; <strong>and</strong>, <strong>of</strong><br />
course, as many here will recall, to celebrate <strong>Perth</strong>’s<br />
City Status, alongside <strong>the</strong> strides we have made as a<br />
new university, we had <strong>the</strong> visit <strong>of</strong> Her Majesty The<br />
Queen <strong>and</strong> His Royal Highness <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh,<br />
on 6 July 2012. This was a very memorable occasion<br />
for all <strong>of</strong> us <strong>and</strong> attended by friends, colleagues <strong>and</strong><br />
partners from across <strong>the</strong> <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong>s</strong> <strong>and</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong>,<br />
indeed, from around <strong>the</strong> globe. Such is <strong>the</strong> reach <strong>of</strong><br />
this <strong>University</strong> <strong>and</strong> a testimony to <strong>the</strong> academic <strong>and</strong><br />
research <strong>of</strong>fering we have available.<br />
All <strong>of</strong> you, who have studied here <strong>and</strong> are graduating<br />
here today, are now part <strong>of</strong> this fledgling <strong>University</strong>,<br />
as it grows from strength to strength. We want you<br />
to continue to be part <strong>of</strong> this community <strong>of</strong> scholars<br />
<strong>and</strong> practitioners way beyond today. Our <strong>of</strong>fer to you<br />
is life-long; <strong>and</strong> your commitment to your chosen<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession will be likewise. We can assist each o<strong>the</strong>r in<br />
this regard. Our vision for <strong>the</strong> future is clear <strong>and</strong> our<br />
goals remain steadfast – to be <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> choice<br />
<strong>and</strong> one which seeks to deliver <strong>the</strong> best possible<br />
experience to all <strong>of</strong> you who come here to learn.<br />
We will build upon this fur<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> years ahead,<br />
through <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> our staff, facilities <strong>and</strong><br />
importantly through our belief in <strong>the</strong> enduring<br />
value <strong>of</strong> education.<br />
We hope that time spent studying at <strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> UHI<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> today’s ceremony will be<br />
something that all our graduates, with <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir family <strong>and</strong> friends, will remember for <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir lives.<br />
I hope you enjoy your special day.<br />

The year <strong>of</strong> your graduation has been a very busy one for everyone at <strong>Perth</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong> UHI. It has been a year <strong>of</strong> change, <strong>of</strong> challenge <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> personal achievement<br />
for us all.<br />
<strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> UHI <strong>and</strong> <strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> Students’ Association can also reflect on a year <strong>of</strong><br />

Royal Honour for<br />
<strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> UHI<br />
We were delighted to welcome Her Majesty The Queen <strong>and</strong><br />
His Royal Highness The Duke <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh to <strong>the</strong> Crieff Road<br />
campus on Friday 6 July as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Diamond Jubilee tour.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> same year that <strong>Perth</strong> celebrated its new city status, our<br />
students <strong>and</strong> staff were thrilled to be given <strong>the</strong> once-in-a-lifetime<br />
opportunity to showcase <strong>the</strong>ir skills <strong>and</strong> abilities in areas such as<br />
music, Alzheimer’s research, hair <strong>and</strong> beauty, aircraft engineering,<br />
hospitality <strong>and</strong> mountain studies. The visit fur<strong>the</strong>r streng<strong>the</strong>ned<br />
our Royal connections, as HRH The Princess Royal became <strong>the</strong> first<br />
Chancellor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Highl<strong>and</strong>s</strong> <strong>and</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong>s in June.<br />
The Royal party viewed displays <strong>of</strong> work <strong>and</strong> enjoyed a musical<br />
performance, before meeting staff, students <strong>and</strong> stakeholders from<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> UHI partnership. The Queen <strong>the</strong>n unveiled a<br />
plaque to commemorate <strong>the</strong>ir visit. The Queen <strong>and</strong> The Duke <strong>of</strong><br />
Edinburgh last visited <strong>Perth</strong> <strong>College</strong> UHI on <strong>the</strong> Silver Jubilee Tour<br />
