POSITION RATIONALE:<br />
The Environmental Coordination Office of Students (ECOS) is <strong>the</strong> environmental<br />
service of <strong>the</strong> U of A Students’ Union and it has been operating a Bike Library<br />
since 2005. The mandate of <strong>the</strong> Bike Library is <strong>to</strong> encourage sustainable<br />
transportation, provide <strong>the</strong> campus community with access <strong>to</strong> affordable<br />
alternative transportation, and provide volunteers with a place <strong>to</strong> learn about<br />
biking and bike maintenance.<br />
The ECOS Bike Library continues <strong>to</strong> be a popular Service that operates in <strong>the</strong><br />
non-winter months, usually April <strong>to</strong> Oc<strong>to</strong>ber inclusive. For one month periods<br />
students, staff and alumni can rent an bike for a $40 deposit. This deposit is<br />
entirely refunded once <strong>the</strong> bike is returned in good condition with all of its<br />
accessories unharmed. The Bike Library Mechanic is responsible <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ECOS<br />
Direc<strong>to</strong>r and performs duties related <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> operations of <strong>the</strong> Bike Library. He/she<br />
will work along side <strong>the</strong> ECOS staff as well as a team of volunteer bike<br />
mechanics <strong>to</strong> operate this service. In particular, this position requires practical,<br />
hands-on problem solving in bike repairs and maintenance, safety assurance and<br />
volunteer coordination.<br />
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES of <strong>the</strong> BIKE LIBRARY MECHANIC:<br />
Supervising <strong>the</strong> operations of ECOS’ Bike Library Program.<br />
o Perform safety checks on bikes before <strong>the</strong>y are rented <strong>to</strong> clients.<br />
o Supervise <strong>the</strong> bike rental process, which includes client contract<br />
signing, bike selection and waiver explanation.<br />
o Repair broken or damaged bikes, reusing old parts whenever possible<br />
and incorporating new parts.<br />
o Take apart bikes <strong>to</strong> be painted, and rebuild those that are already<br />
painted.<br />
Expanding <strong>the</strong> number of bicycles available for rental.<br />
o Accept new bike donations and prepare <strong>the</strong>m for use.
o Seek new donations and arrange times <strong>to</strong> drop off <strong>the</strong> bikes.<br />
o Build bikes from donated frames, parts and new materials.<br />
Coordinating volunteer efforts.<br />
o Assist in recruitment and training of Bike Library volunteers.<br />
o Manage <strong>the</strong> efforts of Volunteer Bike Mechanics as <strong>the</strong>y build bikes<br />
and perform safety checks.<br />
o Supervise o<strong>the</strong>r volunteer as <strong>the</strong>y participate in <strong>the</strong> program (ie.<br />
organize <strong>the</strong> bike room, rent bikes <strong>to</strong> clients etc.).<br />
o Educate volunteers and interested students on basic bike maintenance<br />
procedures.<br />
o Work with <strong>the</strong> ECOS Direc<strong>to</strong>r & Associate Direc<strong>to</strong>r in ensuring that <strong>the</strong><br />
volunteers feel appreciated, valued and are having a positive<br />
experience.<br />
Assisting with <strong>the</strong> marketing and operations of <strong>the</strong> Bike Library program.<br />
o Promotion of <strong>the</strong> services <strong>to</strong> encourage clientele.<br />
o Brains<strong>to</strong>rm creative methods of advertising and marketing.<br />
o Assist ECOS Staff and Volunteers with implementation of marketing<br />
methods and strategies.<br />
Assisting with <strong>the</strong> development and implementation of related outreach<br />
initiatives, such as our Free Bike Checks for students.<br />
General Bike Room Tasks<br />
o Maintain ongoing list of materials needed for <strong>the</strong> Bike Library, ie) <strong>to</strong>ols,<br />
parts, accessories etc.<br />
o Keep regular hours where clients can visit <strong>the</strong> Bike Room <strong>to</strong> seek<br />
repairs or exchange bikes.<br />
o Maintain a safe, organized and clean workspace in <strong>the</strong> Bike Room.<br />
It is expected that all applicants must have experience with bike maintenance.<br />
There is on <strong>the</strong> <strong>job</strong> training specific <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> operations of ECOS as a whole, and<br />
<strong>the</strong> Bike Library in particular. In addition, <strong>the</strong>re will be ample opportunity <strong>to</strong><br />
practice, develop your maintenance abilities and learn new skills. However, <strong>the</strong><br />
successful candidate must demonstrate previous experience with being a Bike<br />
Mechanic or have plenty of personal experience working on bikes.<br />
