POSITION RATIONALE:
The Environmental Coordination Office of Students (ECOS) is the environmental
service of the U of A Students’ Union and it has been operating a Bike Library
since 2005. The mandate of the Bike Library is to encourage sustainable
transportation, provide the campus community with access to affordable
alternative transportation, and provide volunteers with a place to learn about
biking and bike maintenance.
The ECOS Bike Library continues to be a popular Service that operates in the
non-winter months, usually April to October inclusive. For one month periods
students, staff and alumni can rent an bike for a $40 deposit. This deposit is
entirely refunded once the bike is returned in good condition with all of its
accessories unharmed. The Bike Library Mechanic is responsible to the ECOS
Director and performs duties related to the operations of the Bike Library. He/she
will work along side the ECOS staff as well as a team of volunteer bike
mechanics to operate this service. In particular, this position requires practical,
hands-on problem solving in bike repairs and maintenance, safety assurance and
volunteer coordination.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES of the BIKE LIBRARY MECHANIC:
Supervising the operations of ECOS’ Bike Library Program.
o Perform safety checks on bikes before they are rented to clients.
o Supervise the bike rental process, which includes client contract
signing, bike selection and waiver explanation.
o Repair broken or damaged bikes, reusing old parts whenever possible
and incorporating new parts.
o Take apart bikes to be painted, and rebuild those that are already
painted.
Expanding the number of bicycles available for rental.
o Accept new bike donations and prepare them for use.

o Seek new donations and arrange times to drop off the bikes.
o Build bikes from donated frames, parts and new materials.
Coordinating volunteer efforts.
o Assist in recruitment and training of Bike Library volunteers.
o Manage the efforts of Volunteer Bike Mechanics as they build bikes
and perform safety checks.
o Supervise other volunteer as they participate in the program (ie.
organize the bike room, rent bikes to clients etc.).
o Educate volunteers and interested students on basic bike maintenance
procedures.
o Work with the ECOS Director & Associate Director in ensuring that the
volunteers feel appreciated, valued and are having a positive
experience.
Assisting with the marketing and operations of the Bike Library program.
o Promotion of the services to encourage clientele.
o Brainstorm creative methods of advertising and marketing.
o Assist ECOS Staff and Volunteers with implementation of marketing
methods and strategies.
Assisting with the development and implementation of related outreach
initiatives, such as our Free Bike Checks for students.
General Bike Room Tasks
o Maintain ongoing list of materials needed for the Bike Library, ie) tools,
parts, accessories etc.
o Keep regular hours where clients can visit the Bike Room to seek
repairs or exchange bikes.
o Maintain a safe, organized and clean workspace in the Bike Room.
It is expected that all applicants must have experience with bike maintenance.
There is on the job training specific to the operations of ECOS as a whole, and
the Bike Library in particular. In addition, there will be ample opportunity to
practice, develop your maintenance abilities and learn new skills. However, the
successful candidate must demonstrate previous experience with being a Bike
Mechanic or have plenty of personal experience working on bikes.
