District 4 Highlights Upcoming Workshop District 4 has been busy planning our upcoming fall workshop on AAC, presented by district 4’s newest Fellow of the Association, Dr. Patti Solomon-Rice. Welcomes We would like to welcome Alison Pentland to the position of NSSLHA Representative, and Dawn Ferrar and Katherine Pollard-Pollak to the nominating committee. We look forward to their contributions. District 6 Director NEWS Karen Yaghoubian, Director Steven Paulson, Director-Elect District 6 held an exciting CEU workshop, Too Cool for School: iPads in Therapy on May 30th. Our presenters, Toni Salisbury and Mary Courtney shared wonderful strategies for using technology in therapy. We are looking forward to the following exciting CEU workshops for this coming year: Mentoring and Guiding Clinical Fellows, Student Clinicians, and SLPAs: Safeguarding Professional Values presented by Paige Shaughnessy and Jennifer St. Clair on October 18th; Cognition and Language: Effects of Attention, Memory, and Executive Function in Aphasia and Dementia presented by Marsha Zak in winter; Neuroplasticity and How to Maximize Potential Through Home Programs presented by Sarah Taylor and Stephanie Boyles on January 29, 2014; and Communicating Through Touch: What Every SLP/SLPA Needs to Know! presented by Elaine Fogel Schneider in February 2014. Please share your suggestions for future CEU workshops. We are eager to hear from you. Our next Advisory meeting will be August 19th. Please let me know if you are interested in joining our Advisory. Karen Yaghoubian Commission on Professional services for slp & audiology Beryl Fogel, Commissioner This commission is tasked to monitor activities of four ASHA liaison positions, SLPAHAD (Speech- Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers), the Audiology Standing Committee, the Diversity Issues Committee, and three task forces. CA ASHA SEAL (State Education Advocacy Leader) - Holly Kaiser is learning her new responsibilities and responding to member’s questions. She will participate in a face-to-face meeting at the ASHA Schools Conference with ASHA representatives and SEALs from across the country. CA ASHA STAR (State Advocate for Reimbursement) – Shellie Bader is also learning her responsibilities, and initiating email correspondence with the ASHA STAR Network Executive Staff. With assistance from Kathleen Catterall, SMAC, she responded to an ASHA Network question sent to all STARs. CA ASHA SMAC (State Medicare Administrative Contractor) – Kathleen Catterall, who continues to serve in this position, reported on G Coding, Therapy Caps, and the California Hospital Association (CHA) Update on Skilled Nursing Reimbursement. This important information can be found in an email blast that has been sent from the CSHA Office. SLPAHAD (Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers) – Dr. Patti Solomon-Rice reports to the CSHA Board. The outcome of the Sunset Review is SB306 Price Sunset Bill which results in the SLPAHAD Board continuing to regulate the three professions in the current configuration. Audiology Standing Committee – Susan Clark, Chair, is in the process of reorganizing the committee to be prepared for member questions that may arise. the committee have published an outstanding online newsletter which has been distributed to CSHA members via two email blasts. The newsletter can be accessed via the following link http://old.csha.org/ diversity.cfm . The 100-Word Glossary Project is only one of the projects currently in progress. The goal is “ to provide basic vocabulary in multiple languages to communicate vital concepts regarding health and communicative disorder issues”. Four languages are currently in the data base and three others are being discussed. The Glossary is expected to be available on the Diversity Issues Committee Website by the end of 2013. Early Intervention Task Force – Nancy Robinson, Chair, states the purpose “is to define the issues of service delivery in EI…and to develop a position paper that will serve as guidelines”. Literacy Task Force - The Role of the School- Based SLP – Holly Kaiser, Chair, reports the plan is to create a “user-friendly, application oriented position paper … in support of the foundational language intervention needed for reading and writing”. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Task Force be disbanded and these concerns be addressed through the Commission on Professional Services in LP and Audiology Submitted to: Anne Delfosse, President By: Karen Yaghoubian Date: June 22, 2013 Motion to approve: Christina Leroy ; Second: Terry Kappe The motion passed by unanimous voice vote. – Other issues brought up by Rosemary Scott, Secretary of the Board, were updating the Speech- Language Pathology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board (SLPAHADB) language regarding 100 hours of supervised practicum and supervision requirements. Bill Barnaby, Jr. Legislative Advocate, said that he will ask Annemarie DelMugnaio, Executive Director of the state licensing board. Rosemary also asked about uniformity of protocol regarding confidentiality among university programs for students to observe/volunteer. Steve Paulson, director-elect District 6, said that he did not know of any uniform policy. Workload-Caseload Task Force – Christina LeRoy, Chair is in the process of organizing the committee. DRDP – The CSHA Board voted to disband the task force previously created. This commission will research and monitor this issue. Motion(s) Passed at the June 2013 Board Meeting: Motion 1 -2013/2014 ABSTRACT: At the March 2013 CSHA Board Meeting, the CSHA Board approved the formation of a Task Force to address SLP concerns regarding administration/ completion of the DRDP by SLPs for preschool-aged children receiving speech/language services but not enrolled in a special education preschool setting. Document Changes: By-Laws: ____ Standing Rules: ____Other:__X___ RESOLUTION STATEMENT: WHEREAS some CSHA members continue to have concerns regarding the DRDP for students only receiving speech-language services 5 CSHA is offering many CE district workshops this coming year. Please view our Calendar of Events off the CSHA website at: http://www.csha.org/workshops As the fall season approaches, we will be adding more and more workshops throughout the year. All workshops will offer CEUs. Here are just a few of what CSHA will be offering this coming year. Continue to check the website for date and topic information as workshop dates approach.
