PDA in General
Insurance
Course Summary
This award has been developed to equip candidates who wish to enter
employment in the Insurance Industry. You will develop knowledge
and skills specifically in the areas of general insurance markets,
regulations and underwriting.
The award will allow you to acquire both employment skills and an
understanding of the insurance industry. The PDA in General Insurance
has been specifically designed to meet the industry demand for
work-ready employees.
Candidates will be prepared for a career within underwriting, claims,
sales and service, support functions, broking and loss adjusting.

• General Insurance Business
• Insurance Underwriting Process
Added Value – 1 Effort – 2 Qualifications
Candidates who successfully complete the PDA will
also have the opportunity to be presented for the
CII examinations, students who pass will be awarded
the Chartered Institute of Insurers (CII) Certificate
in Insurance.

Entry Requirements
All applicants will be interviewed and will be expected to display a
real commitment to study this professional qualification. It would be
desirable to have passed English and Mathematics at Intermediate 2.
Progression
This course will allow you to progress on to the HNC in Business
award and the credits you gain in this PDA, may count towards
the accumulation of the full HNC award. The PDA will also prepare
candidates for progression to further studies in general insurance eg
CII Certificate and Diploma in Insurance.
All candidates who successfully complete the PDA will be guaranteed
an interview for employment in the Insurance industry in Perth.
Duration
This course will be offered as a timetabled choice for S5/6 school
pupils on a Friday afternoon in Perth College UHI.

Case study
Hannah Hutcheson was one of the students involved in the pilot course.
She was a pupil at Perth Grammar and thought that it might be interesting to
choose an option that gave her the possibility of finding employment in the
Insurance Industry.
She said that she really enjoyed the course, but it wasn’t a soft option,
she found the course challenging but realised that the content was very
specialised and directly related to preparing individuals for work in the
Insurance Industry. During part of her October holidays she took up a work
placement that she very much enjoyed, it also helped her apply the theory
she has been learning to the real world.
Hannah successfully completed the PDA in June 2011 and was subsequently
interviewed for a position with AVIVA. She is now working for AVIVA and
currently involved on a training programme on Commercial Service
Underwriting, specialising in Property and Liability cover.
