Letter from Bernie
Dear Friends,
At this stage, you will be aware of our good news: the appointment of Rev’d Robert
Warren as our new rector. The Institution will take place on Saturday 15th September
at 2.30pm in Christ Church, Taney. A formal invitation is extended to all parishioners
and is included in the magazine. This is a very exciting time for our parish and we
look forward to extending a warm welcome to Robert and his wife, Vera.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all most sincerely for your
exceptional support during my time here as Resident Priest. I must confess that I
took up the post with some trepidation last January. However, very quickly I felt
surrounded by wonderful expressions of welcome, warmth and encouragement.
There is no doubt that mutual support of one another is at the heart of a true
Christian community – and in my experience, Taney Parish has demonstrated this
in full.
Our new rector will arrive at a busy time – and what is an exciting time. As always, the team-work that keeps the
parish motivated will swing into action and the parish centre will be buzzing with activities. I have agreed to stay
for a short time to help with the transition process – so no farewells just yet!
Bernie
Apology
In our last issue of Taney News
Rachel Harvey, 3rd Class, Taney
School produced a lovely picture
which was chosen for the Summer
edition. Regrettably, the incorrect
name was inserted on the cover. We
would like to apologise to Rachel
and to congratulate her once again.
Would anyone have a piano!
A parishioner would like to know if any person would have a
piano they no longer require. Willing to pay a reasonable price!
Taney News Harvest 2012 1

Greetings from our new Rector
Dear Parishioners,
Vera and I are very much looking forward to joining you as members of
the Taney Parish Family and as part of the Taney Parish Team.
Since the announcement of my appointment as your next Rector, we have
been showered by good wishes from so many people – the Nominators,
the Select Vestry Members (who sent us a wonderful bouquet of flowers),
the Office Staff and a representative group of parishioners who turned up
to greet us on our first visit to Taney in late July.
In particular, we are most grateful to the Glebewardens, David Randall
(whose wife Thelma hailed from Tralee!), and William Hourie, assisted by Walter Newburn, who have
undertaken sterling work on the Rectory and have assisted us with the task of choosing paint colour schemes and
floor coverings etc., making difficult decisions seem so easy! We are now very much looking forward to moving in,
early in September, in advance of the Institution on 15th September.
I have valued too, getting to know The Rev. Bernie Daly whose warm welcome and wealth of information has been
so helpful in assisting me get a “feel” for the parish and for what lies ahead. I know I will be leaning on her quite a
bit as I get established in my role as your new Rector.
We look forward to meeting and getting to know you over the coming weeks and months. As you can imagine it
will be quite a daunting task to get to know so many people in a short period of time – and to be honest, the recall
of names has never been my strong point! So it would be much appreciated, if for a time, you always mention your
name when we meet, - that would be so helpful!
Even though Vera and I have lived all our married lives – and indeed long before! – in Limerick and Kerry, we are no
strangers to Dublin. I spent most of my formal education in Bray (Aravon School) and Dublin (St. Columba’s College
and TCD) and both, our son, John, and daughter, Sarah, were also educated at St. Columba’s and Trinity. And of
course there were all those numerous treks to Dublin for RCB meetings. Oh, joy! Church House will now be just a
few Luas stops away!
Please remember us in your prayers during the coming weeks – as we will be praying for you – as we get to
know each other and as we step out together in faith and discern God’s Will for us all on what I am sure will be a
wonderful and exciting pilgrimage!
God Bless you.
Robert
The first meeting of the Confirmation Group will take
place on Sunday 21st October. Candidates should attend
available at the class.
Taney Parish Harvest Appeal
Harvest is a time of Thanksgiving. It is also ‘a moment’ to express our appreciation for all the gifts that sustain us in
home and family and not least, those offered by our Church and Christian community. We are especially thankful this
autumn, for the opportunity to welcome to Taney Parish our new Rector, Rev. Robert Warren and his wife Vera who
bring a wide range of expertise and a deep knowledge of the Church of Ireland.
Many of you have often expressed your appreciation of the sense of belonging and warmth of welcome in your
contacts through Sunday worship, Parish Centre activities, Taney School and through the network of pastoral care
of clergy and people. Such support and care is so important in good times and particularly in these times of severe
challenge. Practical expressions of this support include the grants given by the Parish to those in need, which many
of you support through contributions to the Taney Special Needs Fund.
Much of the good work of the Parish is, of course, based on its ability to maintain adequate funding to meet the
normal monthly operating expenses. This year we continue to maintain Christ Church and the Parish Centre, but
in particular we are preparing for much needed expenditure on St. Nahi’s to ensure that the invaluable windows
are refurbished. We plan for further work on the Graveyard in St Nahi’s and hope that this will open up additional
space for future burials. We have also taken the opportunity to refurbish the Rectory and have fitted it out to a high
specification of insulation and energy conservation. This will not only make the home more comfortable but will also
greatly reduce the outgoings for the future.
We appreciate that many of our parishioners are experiencing difficult financial demands but we are writing to you
in the hope that you may be able to make a donation to the Parish. All gifts are valued. Many who have given
regularly over the years are also experiencing the constraints of the recession so we are appealing to all families in
the Parish, especially those who may not have had the opportunity to contribute before.
If you would like to make a donation, please put it in the envelope provided and put on the plate or send it to the
Parish Office. Alternatively, if you are not already doing so and would like to give by means of Standing Order or
by the Weekly Envelope Scheme, please ‘tick the box’ on the Appeal Envelope or contact the Parish Office (Tel: 298
5491) and this will be arranged for you.
Thank you for considering our request.
Parish News
Rob Clements
Rob Clements, who was on placement at Taney Parish from September to
December 2011, will be ordained Deacon in Christ Church Cathedral by
the Most Revd Dr. Michael Jackson, Archbishop of Dublin on Sunday 16th
September at 3.30pm. You are warmly invited to attend if you wish to share
this time.
New Parish Centre Brochure
September/October marks the resurgence of life
and activity in church and in the Parish Centre. As
memories of summer recede we get back to the old
routines: schools, colleges, work and home. But don’t
be dismayed. With the evenings closing in, we have
activities and programmes to suit every taste and
age-group. Just drop in and sample a tempting array
of interests held at all times of the day and night.
Complementing our church worship is a wide variety
of parish and community activities. You will find
details in this issue and a copy of our new information
brochure is also enclosed in the magazine.
Taney Garden Fête
What a day for the Fête! Saturday 9th June was dry, sunny, warm
with summer clouds swirling over Taney hill. By the time the gates
opened at 1pm the queue was well formed and the people surged into
the grounds of Christ Church, Taney. The bunting from the top of the
church’s imposing tower swirling in the gentle breeze with the highly
decorated stalls, marquees and tents resplendent in colour, provided the
backcloth to a memorable day. It was a great time for all. Someone
said, ‘it’s like a party!’ The stalls were stocked with all sorts of goodies
from DVD and LP’s to white elephants, bakes and cakes to books and
toys, deli and country produce; plants, cosmetics and jewels. There was
a thriving bottle stall and plenty of clothing at ‘Taney Outlet’. It was fun
for the young, with face-painting, sweets and candy floss, fancy dress,
cake-walk, bouncy castle and ‘break the crockery’! It was lovely to see
parishioners and friends, the wider community and a host of visitors
from far and wide including USA, Europe, the Middle East – all in one
place, speaking their own languages. They all enjoyed the fun of the
fayre. The tea and food stall served refreshments, the burgers sold out.
If you wanted a rest or the chance to spectate, sit down, chat to friends,
the Ooom-Pah-Pah Jazz Band provided the musical background. All
of this was brought together by the Fête Committee, Ciara Maleady,
William Hourie, Dave Murphy, Jackie Rohu and Jennifer Armstrong
with a marvellous band of stall-holders and helpers from parish, school
and community. It was a great result financially, but socially, the Fête
was all that we wished for, parish and community at one – inclusive
and welcoming. To all of you who came along on the day and without
whom it would never happen, our thanks! We are delighted to learn
that any clothes not sold in Taney Outlet at the Fête were collected by
Age Action.
Taney Parish Coffee Shop
The Coffee Shop in the Parish
Centre is open again after
the summer. It gives a lovely
flavour to parish and community
life exuding rich and varied
aromas of coffee and baking
spoiling any autumn diet. The
usual fare of tea, coffee, scones,
cakes, soup and sandwiches are
served up by Yvonne Rankin
and Jenny Mooney along with
their assistants. The opening
hours are 9am. to 2pm. From
Friday 14th September we will
be serving lunch of either soup
and main course or main course
and dessert (including tea and
coffee). Please let Yvonne or
Jenny know by noon on the
Thursday before by phoning
the Parish Office 298 5491 or in
person at the Coffee Shop
Game of Whist
Following the Friday Hot Lunches ‘A Game of Whist’ returns for a new
season. The next games will be on 14th & 28th September, 12th and 26th
October, 9th and 23rd November and 14th December. No matter what level
you are at you would be very welcome to join us for a game!
Taney Helping Hands
We are delighted to welcome on board the Helping Hands team Malachi
O’Neill who has agreed to keep a watchful eye on our library upstairs. Henry
Wiseman is still looking after our archives. If you have something for our
archives please give him a call. I am looking for a green fingered person to
keep a watchful eye on our two plants in the centre (one at the main door
and one on the back stairs) I would love somebody to give them a bit of
‘love’ now and again; they tend to quiver when they see me coming !!!
Friday lunches resume on September 14th according to Chef Jenny who I ran
into while walking her dog (between rain showers!) so we will use this date to
begin our Whist. We will run the Whist every second Friday from 1.45pm to
3.45pm. All are welcome no matter what level you are at so please do drop by.
Helping Hands has responsibility for organising readers for Christ Church
each Sunday. We would be delighted to welcome anyone who would have
an interest in reading to join the Readers’ Guild. Members of the Reader’s
Guild usually read about three times a year and on a day that suits them.
We would be particularly delighted to welcome young people to the Guild.
Training and advice is available for everyone!
Cleaning of the church: on Saturday 8th September we will be looking for
volunteers with feather dusters in hand (the more the merrier) to give the
church a once over before the big event the following Saturday. We want to
make sure that Christ Church is pristine for this event. We hope to start at
10am.
Summer Art School
The Taney Summer Art School has
been in full swing for seven weeks. As
always we have had tremendous fun
while developing our creative skills and
encouraging one another in our work.
We had a lovely ‘end of term’ party and
a small exhibition on 29th August and
we all look forward to future classes!
Taney Primary School
The summer holidays have been a time for rest
and relaxation. The weather was conducive to
growth which benefitted our new wildflower
and wildlife areas. We thank our Green Schools
Committee for their hard work on both of
these areas. Our new flowerbed has especially
benefitted from the wet weather.
We welcome a number of new staff members to our
school this academic year. Ms McElhinney will be
teaching Fifth Class, Ms. Warren will be teaching Third
Class and Ms. Young will be teaching Fourth Class. We
extend best wishes to Ms. Carson as she begins her
retirement.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back to
school on Thursday 30th August for another busy
school year. The school will open at 8.30am for
all pupils. Please refer to our website for further
information www.taneyschool.ie
Taney Rangers
Taney Rangers had a very
enjoyable outing on Saturday 30th
June when we went to Hunters
Hotel in Rathnew for lunch. While
there we had time to enjoy a
stroll in the lovely gardens before
setting off for a scenic drive home.
We travelled past Lough Tay and
Lough Dan which we viewed in
good weather. This was our last
outing for this season, and we look
forward to future events.
Mothers’ Union
The Autumn session begins
with a meeting on Tuesday 11th
September at 8pm, the speaker
will be Fergus Finlay, CEO of
Barnardos. On 9th October the
speaker will be Susan Denham,
Chief Justice. 13th December the
speaker will be John Bowman,
Historian & Broadcaster speaking
on the history of RTE. These are
open meetings - all parishioners
and friends are welcome.
Bowling Club
We are looking forward to our Winter/Spring season starting on Monday
3rd September. We meet on a Monday and Thursday nights from 7.30pm to
10.00pm and on a Tuesday morning from 10.00am to 12 noon. Once again
the Dundrum Festival held their Bowling Competition in the Sinnamon Hall
on 20th June 2012 when six teams from the Dundrum area competed against
each other up to the finals which were then held in the Dom Marmion Hall
on 22nd June. Taney qualified to play against Balally Bowling Club. It was
a close match played in a very competitive way. Congratulations to the
Taney team, Esmé, Margaret, Bill and Adeline on a well deserved win. As
we start our 41st year bowling in Taney Parish we look forward to playing
matches in the United Churches League, our Club Competitions and of
course plenty of enjoyable social evenings. We welcome new members and
further information is available from any committee member or from the
Parish Office 298 5491.
Taney Drama Society
Our AGM on 31 May was very well attended and we had a wide ranging discussion on many
aspects of the Drama Society and how best to move it forward for the future. We feel we are
at a cross roads at the moment and need to encourage new members to the society to enable
us grow and continue with the high standard of production of TDS. We will celebrate our 21st
Birthday as a Drama Society on September 21st and the Committee is working hard to make
this a memorable get together of past, present and hopefully future members. If you have any
photographs, programmes or memorabilia of past productions for this evening please pass on
to any Committee member by the end of August.
We are indeed blessed to have the expertise of Mary McCoy to direct our next production in
the Mill Theatre for end of January. Plays are being read and decisions will be made by the
end of August based on members interested. We also intend doing a smaller production in
Taney towards the end of November. We will, depending on being accepted, be bringing our
One Acts on the circuit next season. Details of forthcoming events may be obtained from our
website www.taneydramasociety.com . If you are interested in an active role in Taney Drama,
Taney Lawn Tennis Club
Although the weather has been very wet this season we have still
managed to play tennis during every dry moment. We have been very
lucky to acquire the services of a wonderful grass cutter who also marks
the courts.
During May and June we had just over 40 juveniles from Taney National
School for coaching and tennis on Monday evenings and Tuesday
afternoons. Most of the children achieved a very good standard
and everyone had great fun. At the end of the coaching we ran a
tournament for them with prizes from Wimbledon for the winners.
Despite these months being some of the wettest in living memory we
only had to cancel coaching once because of rain. During the summer
months some of the children came to play tennis on Wednesday
afternoons supervised by their parents.
The club tournaments have been drawn and handicapped where
appropriate and are being played now and the finals will be held at the
At Home on Saturday 8th September.
The club is open Monday to Saturday each week with a tournament on
Thursday evenings starting at 7pm and of course tea and sandwiches are
served every Saturday afternoon
– a tradition which has been
carried on from the time the
club opened 76 years ago!
Thank you
As we look forward to the Institution of Rev. Robert Warren it is time to
thank the Diocese for the assistance that was provided for Sunday Worship.
In particular a word of thanks to Rev. Dr. Billy Marshall for his thought
provoking and inspiring sermons and a special word for Rev. John Marchant,
well known in Taney, for his memorable sermons. Who will forget “Bob the
Builder” in the pulpit not to mention the endless supply of Bibles produced
in another sermon.
It would be remiss not to mention the enormous contribution made by Trilly
Keatinge and Cathy Hallissey. We are very fortunate to have people with
such abilities in our Parish. Our hope is that their lives will return to some
sort of normality after the arrival of Robert.
For those of you who might think I had forgotten Rev. Bernie you will have
read that she will stay with us during the transition and we will have an
opportunity to express our appreciation at another time.
A Day in the Life
A Day in the Life...
Church Organist
Chaos! If I had a tail I would be chasing it fulltime, and never
catching it. A chicken without a head maybe. I do have a
head, but often you wouldn’t know it… Ask the choir!
Anyway, a normal day for me doesn’t
exist. Today I was up around 8am, later
than during the year thankfully as there
are no school runs. Ilona (14) is in the
Gaeltacht for three weeks and we miss
her terribly. Rupert (16) is in South
Africa on a High School rugby trip and
is on safari today – how cool is that! Carl
is doing the Leaving and has just one
or two exams left but is still sleeping
off the effects of an end of year party.
Hmm, no comment… Sebastian has just
completed his second year in college at
the Royal Irish Academy of Music where
he is studying composition and finally
has a little bit of spare time.
So Mary, Sebastian and yours truly trot
off to Flemings in the old shopping
centre to spoil ourselves with a spot of
light breakfast, what ho! You get a free Irish Times into the
bargain, definitely to be recommended. The breakfast roll
for 4 euro can easily be shared between two, if you’re into
breakfast rolls, that is.
Then, of all things, 11am NCT test on Mary’s car, but
fortunately the damage is not too bad. Have to go back for
re-test, but just a couple of small things (like forgetting to
take off the hubcaps, d’oh!) . Just in time, I get in to town
for the final doctoral exam of my harpsichord pupil of many
years Desmond Earley. This is a lunchtime concert in a
beautiful room in Newman House on St. Stephen’s Green,
and he plays a French and German programme like a dream.
Happy Days, the examining panel agree!
Then I head over to the Academy in Westland Row for a
meeting about next year’s opera productions with the Head
of Vocal Studies, Kathleen Tynan. We are doing Britten’s
Albert Herring and Monteverdi’s Combattimento among
other things, and I will be musical director. We have already
auditioned and decided on the cast, so now it is down to
practical things like costing, venues, hire of parts, deciding
whether to use a grand or upright piano, etc., boring but
essential details. Kathleen leaves no stone unturned, and has
huge vision and stamina - I am more the nuts and bolts guy,
hands on once term gets going. It is now almost 4pm.
In Lidl I had earlier validated my parking ticket by spending
the princely sum of 2 euros and 1 cent on an apple turnover,
a banana, and 8! delicious sweet, crisp and juicy apples -
three of these items are now hurriedly consumed on the
bicycle en route to St. Ann’s Church in Dawson Street where
I am making a CD recording this week with my friends
Bill Dowdall (flute), his daughter Lisa (viola) and Malachy
Robinson (violone). The music has
never been recorded before, surprisingly
perhaps considering that it is 300 years
old, but unsurprisingly considering that
much of it has been unearthed from the
National Library in recent months, music
from Dublin in the time of Dean Swift
by a host of mostly imported composers;
Geminiani (buried in St. Andrew’s
Church, Suffolk Street), Castrucci (buried
in St. Mary’s Church at the end of
Henry Street), Dubourg (leader of the
orchestra for the first Messiah), Thomas
Roseingrave (organist in St. Patricks who
went mad with a bad case of unrequited
love!) and of course our own Signor
Carolina, the blind harpist, Carolan.
Dublin at the time was the second city
of the Empire, fully subscribing to the
prevalent Italian vogue, and boasted 60
music shops/publishers and about 80
instrument builders! Wow! We would have liked to record in
St. Nahi’s as the acoustic is really magic, but the traffic noise
is… yes, tragic! So we are very grateful to St. Ann’s and their
organist, Charles Marshall, who has facilitated the recording.
With four people playing, and a sound engineer listening, it
takes a while to reach agreement on any given take, so the
recording session lasts longer than expected, especially as
we had to spend half an hour blocking off the sound of a
giant vent in the EU building next door by stacking a great
number of pew cushion s against a window. Finally, we
think we have got what we need for today. The music is fab,
easy listening but exciting and quirky. At 10.30pm I hop on
my bike and head for home.
Home, sweet home! Dinner is waiting. And what a dinner!
It is a chicken dish from the Avoca book, done in damson
jam, and it tastes like heaven. Apparently, it is fairly simple,
according to Mary, but the taste is exquisite, with a couple of
glasses of wine to wash it down. Who’s complaining
And then head for bed. But that could take a while. A bit
of tidying, a bit of dish washing, a bit of zapping, check
out how the under-20’s are doing in South Africa (thought
I might spot George Strong in the crowd as he went out to
support his grandson who was playing for Ireland!, but to
my huge surprise spotted my own son Rupert instead at the
Ireland/England match when we got beaten – revenge was
sweet in the second match though). Finally bed, and my
book of the moment, The Help. It is really good but I am
reading it too sporadically, as each night after a few pages I
am conked! At least sleep is not a problem…
