semester. Each class, I will randomly select 6 people to come to the front of the class to talk about the homework assignment. Summary of Course Content The course description reads as follows “We survey cutting edge research across the field of social psychology—and how it matters for everyday life. Topics include morality, mind perception, judgment and decision-making, happiness, affective forecasting, emotion, relationships, negotiation, personality, free will, stress/health and religion. Clear communication of research also emphasized through figures, presentations and papers.” But the question is what exactly about each of these topics will we be learning about In judgment and decision making, we will learn about various kinds of heuristics (representativeness, availability, anchoring and adjustment), confirmation bias, joint versus separate comparison, prospect theory, framing effects, sunk cost effect, frequency versus probability, gambler’s fallacy, regression to the mean, conditional probability and the Monty Hall problem. In happiness, we learn about affective forecasting (immune neglect & focalism), experiences versus items, life satisfaction versus experiential happiness, and various factors leading to each. In mind perception, we discuss the structure of mind perception, the phenomena of dehumanization and anthropomorphism, the link between mind and morality, dyadic morality, moral typecasting, dyadic completion and objectification. In morality we talk about cognition versus affect, utilitarianism versus deontology and intuition versus reason. We also discuss moral exemplars and dynamic morality. In the evolution of cooperation, we talk about kin altruism, direct reciprocity, indirect reciprocity, group living, commitment devices, the moral foundations and the identifiable victim effect. In emotion we discuss the competing models of emotion: construction and basic emotions, and the roles of culture, affect, expressions and gender. In negotiation you will practice negotiating and learn about integrative versus distributive negotiations, BATNAs, common mistakes and differing motivations. In free will you will learn that you don’t have any through the Libet study, priming and apparent mental causation, and will thinking about the repercussions for the law. In self-control you will learn about thought suppression, implementation intentions, self-control as a muscle, tricks for selfcontrol, and the planning fallacy. In stress and heatlh, you will learn about dualism, embodied concepts, hormones (cortisol, oxytocin & testosterone), the power of stress, sleep and social networks. In relationships you will learn about evolutionary sexual strategies, and Gottman’s relationship types and relationship conflict and resolution. In God, we will discuss evolution, memes, morality, randomness, suffering, meaning and Terror Management Theory. Finally, in personality, we will discuss the Big 5, implicit tests, Myers Briggs, geographical determinants of personality and snooping. Class Policies In general, just be courteous to me and one another. No laptops. I understand it is often easier to type than to take notes by hand. However, I know the temptation of the dark side (i.e., facebook) is powerful. Research suggests that such distractions impede learning. Also, I prefer the occasional glassy eyed stare of boredom than the distracted chuckles that the internet offers.
No phone antics. Cell phones are now miniature laptops, capable of email, texting, and web surfing; however, cell phones cannot even be used to take notes on. Please do not surreptitiously email under your desk. If you are bored, then think about a pressing concern in your life and how to remedy it. I have had some of my best ideas while bored. Arrive on time. Missed classes. If you need to miss class, it is your responsibility to make up the material covered. Grab the notes off a willing classmate. We all have important obligations, and so I’m not worried if you miss one. If you miss multiple classes, doing so may cost you a significant portion of your grade (see Homeworks). If you need to miss an exam, that is fine as well. Only your two top exams will count towards your grade. Academic integrity. The full spiel is at the back, but in brief – do not cheat. Do not pass off another’s work as your own. Do not copy another’s exam. When it doubt, cite it, and everything you do and you’ll be fine. For more information, see http://studentconduct.unc.edu/ Issues. All the things above make me seem like a strict schoolmarm, but like a schoolmarm, I really want you to do well. Ideally, everyone will glide through this course loving it and getting great marks. But sometimes things conspire to make it go roughly. If you are having trouble, then talk to me early on. We can talk about it and figure out what’s going on and how to make it better. Swinging by on the last day of class after failing all the exams is not as useful as coming by after the first exam. Late assignments. Late assignments will not be accepted. If it is handed in late, you will receive a grade of zero. If you fail to attach an assignment to email, or fail to post an assignment online on time, then it is late and will therefore receive a zero. Make sure you double-check your attachments.
