The first group of children who visited the town of Sherborne had 16 members,
accompanied by a teacher of the English language.

During the Douzelage meeting in Sesimbra (Portugal) in April 1996, the town of
Preveza offered educational material as aid for the students of St Phlip in Green
Cape. The mayor of St. Philip received the material and thanked all participants for

Inheritance of Douzelage
This project was implemented by the two towns of Sesimbra (Portugal) and Preveza
(Greece). Within a 10 minutes video each member town presented its own cultural
inheritance. Preveza made a video dedicated to the ancient city of Nikopolis and
showed it to the other partners during the Douzelage meeting in Bundoran (Ireland)
in 1997.

A class from the commercial school Holstebro is visiting the secondary school in
Cham near Kötzting. They had a special welcome by the first Mayor Mr Ludwig.
Mrs Heidi Wolf, a reporter of the Bavarian Radio Channel and the translator Mrs
Fernanda Strasser are participating in the name of Kötzting at the "Media Meeting"
happening in Altea.
26 seniors of the Kötzting TV channel are visiting Granville. There an extensive
visiting schedule with a German speaking guide is offered to the group.

Mike Balfour’s family visit in Preveza in the previously mentioned event and two

The amateur theatric group of Preveza visited the town of Sherborne in August 1998

A secondary class from Kötzting is visiting Sušice and playing together a football
match
Participation in the twinning weekend in Sherborne (GB)
A joint project between eight amateur theatres from seven twinned towns in
Denmark, Finland, Netherland, Italy, Luxembourg, Germany, Greece and UK). Its
goal being the preparation and showing of a joint historical theatre play. In the initial
project phase, every group had a period of education in theatre, drama and history,
focused on their own local history. After a period of separate rehearsals by each
group, the project continued with mutual rehearsals by the whole cast. The final play
was shown in Karkkila during 31.7.­5.8.00. (Subvention communautaire: 130.000 €)
This has been the most remarkable event, it is the hard and successful joined effort
of the theatrical teams of Douzelage, to present a common play entitled "Bridges",
inspired by the traditional Greek song "The Bridge of Arta".
40 people from Kötzting are on "language holidays" in Sherborne, where they are
hosted in the local School for Girls.

Eight student and two teachers from Preveza visited the town of Meerssen
(Netherlands) between the 2nd and 6th of October 2000, in order to participate in
the European Youth Week. The event took place in the Stella Maris College with
subject “ United Europe”. Students from eight different counties took part in the
event.

A group of young citizens of Niederanven participated to this traditional sports
event. They reported a warm welcome, a comfortable stay and rich experience out
of this meeting. There is no doubt that they will be once more on the line in 2002.

The music association "La Réunion" of Hostert, the gardening club "Gaard an
Heem" and the tourist office of Niederanven participated to this very special
procession. They were 50 people to go there by bus and everybody reported a really
happy and colourful day.
The Kötzting theatre group is visiting Preveza for one week
On the initiative of the Douzelage Committee of Niederanven, a "hike in Granville"
has been organised for the nature loving association "Natur­a Reesfrënn" of
Niederanven. A lot of photo shots were taken and even a video tape shows that this
journey has been very successful in its organisation and promotion of tourism and
interpersonal relationships between the Douzelage members.
In September 2001 a group of 18 students from Preveza, accompanied by 2
teachers, visited Karkkila.

Douzelage General Meeting in Karkkila (Finland) with a Comenius workshop
Meeting in Trikala (Greece)
In November 2001, Preveza was invited in a meeting in the Greek town of Trikala,
with subject “Presentation of the twinning concept”. Preveza was the only Greek
town invited as an example of a successful practice in the section of twinning.
A delegation of the Niederanven and Kötzting Douzelage Committees participated to
the 26th solemn chapter of the brotherhood "D'Ill Crass Jotte", an old Belgian
tradition that took place in Houffalize the day before the "Foire Ste Catherine".

"Douzelage and art" in Judenburg, Austria
A beautiful sculpture and picture exhibition of two Niederanven artists has been
realised in Judenburg, Austria. The financial success being minor because of very
high shipping fees, nevertheless the artistic value of this exhibition revealed itself to
be of a very high level.

the directions and distances between the town of Niederanven and all other member
towns.
A class from the Holstebro commercial school is visiting the secondary school of
Cham. They are visiting the town of Kötzting and the local casino.
"Mam Euro duerch Europa", an "euro" activity organised by several teachers of
Niederanven for the youngsters. In fact 3 classes from Houffalize did join the
Niederanven ones in order to learn more about the Euro by playing. This day
represented for all of them a very pleasureful and learnful experience.

Shooting contest between the Sušice and Kötzting shooting clubs
Teachers from Castlefin (Republic of Ireland), Dungannon (Irlande du Nord),
Swansea (Wales), Preveza (Greece), Sušice (République Tchèque) et Granville
have met at Castlefin to make a summary of what has been achieved and plans for
future actions.
A very successful performance of the Oxelösund music school in Meerssen. The
were performances in several schools and homes for old aged people.
Mr. Martijn Hosman visited Chojna in Poland tot deliver several speeches with
PowerPoint presentation about the Douzelage in Europe. He did it in several schools
and for the Municipal councils. Mr. Ed Weber, the president of de Douzelage,
accompanied him. The visit was successful and de result was an approval of all the
members of the municipal council of Chojna to join the Douzelage.

Work experience for three Sherborne girls (Sonia, Emily et Lizzie ) from Gryphon
school.
During a meeting of de members of Douzelage Meerssen there was a speech of Dr.
Frans Timmermans about European citizenship in relation with the new European
constitution.
Conference of Comenius project teachers and pupils from Sherborne and Chojna in
Meerssen. Together the pupils made a newspaper.
From the 9th until the 25th of January 2004 the Portuguese artist Paolo Lobo, a
native from the Sesimbra region living in Luxembourg, exhibited his works in
collaboration with the local Douzelage Committee. His photographs show portraits
of the native fishermen around Sesimbra. This exhibition had a lot of success
because of its very picturesque character and was visited among others by the local
Portuguese ambassador.

Comenius project at Sévigné à Granville School with a Polish town
The association "Amis du Douzelage" of Niederanven visited Granville for several
days in mid April. They have been welcomed with a lot of warmth and the
participants reported a very relaxing and instructive stay.
A new comenius project for Lycee Malraux à Granville “tomorrow ideal town” with
Zvolen (Slovakia) Koprivice (Czech Republic) and Edna (Italy)
4 Judenburg artists exhibited their works (china painting, wood sculptures, ceramic
dish…) in Niederanven. This action has been the result of an fruitful collaboration
between Judenburg and the Niederanven Douzelage Committee. This exhibition was
highly appreciated by the artists and the local town representatives and honoured by
the presence of a representative of the Austrian Embassy in Luxembourg

Student exchange visit Granville/Karkkila
A group of 12 French youngsters from the Lycée La Morandière in Granville
together with their teachers visited Karkkila in April 2004. The one week stay was
part of Douzelage co operation. Last year students from Karkkila with their teacher
visited Granville and this spring it was their turn to visit us. During the visit the
French were familiarized with Finnish forest industry on a small scale as the guests
were taken to see a typical Finnish forest at family Syrjänen's place and their forest
cottage. The French people also had a taste of Karkkila industry as they we.re taken
to visit two of the local industries, Metso and Helvar factories. One day was spent in
Helsinki sightseeing and shopping and another at Vesiheimi spa in Forssa
swimming and enjoying ourselves. During the week Karkkila hosts also organized
get togethers every now and then in the evenings to get to know one another and
have a barbecue in the Finnish way On the last day our guests were taken to see
the foundry museum where they were also given the opportunity to make a tin
souvenir for themselves. On the same day the reception at Karkkila town hall nicely
concluded the project in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. , We would like to thank
the towns of Granville and Karkkila for making this project come true and wish to

Benelux meeting of the Douzelage in Meerssen. There were 22 participants from
Niederanven, Houffalize and Meerssen. Mr. Ger Kockelkorn, mayor of Meerssen,
was the chairman of the day. There were discussions about the problems of the
trainee project, the day tourism in the Benelux. The proposal of the youth group
Meerssen to make a list on the website with a photo of Douzelage members was
extensively discussed. They also talked about the problems of the EU grants for the
Douzelage conferences.
Kötzting is invited to Sušice for their celebration of official accession of Czechia to

The 9th edition of the Miniparliament in Bellagio. The subject this year has been
"Education through sports" and the famous "Douzelage walk" took also place.

Douzelage General Meeting in Judenburg with the accession of the 5 new towns
Chojna (Poland), Sušice (Czchec Republik), Türi (Estonia), Köszeg (Hungary),
Sigulda (Latvia).
Workshops: e learning and renewable energies were interesting parts of this
conference. Besides that our quests took part at different historical visits in the area.
They even went up our mountains and in a typical mountain guesthouse they had a
taste of our "Schnaps". An entertaining evening with Austrian folk music ended this
conference. After the Judenburg meeting a group of our international friends paid a
short visit to our new Hungarian partner town Köszeg.
Pupils from Preveza (Gr), Rosenheim (Ger) and Oss (NL) came to Meerssen. The
project has the name "Imagine Through Art". The school subjects art and music are
involved. In Valkenburg the item of the meeting was the handling and working with
marIstone. Regional artists gave workshops. The participants also had excursions
to Liege and Maastricht. Next meeting of the is project will be in Preveza in October.
The meaning of the is project is to show the people that arts fraternize.

Councillors, teachers and students from Türi, Chojna, Köszeg and Sušice were
welcomed to Sherborne. Separate programme were organised, including tours of a
range of local schools by the teachers and students, and a final session was held to
plan future contacts and exchanges.
After some years of preparation a football team from Oxelösund visited Granville in
July 2004.Preparations are now in progress to welcome a football team from
Granville to Oxelösund the first week of July.
A group of 20 persons went for a bicycle trip to Karkkila and surroundings with the
representatives from Türi and Karkkila in July. They visited local enteprises and
culture activities.

Sailing Project "Sailing and Environment" in Granville for students.
4 pupils and 2 teachers from Judenburg and 5 pupils and a teacher from Meerssen
took part.
The pupils could stay with very friendly and hospitable families of Granville. It really
was a great experience for them to learn how to sail and to see the many sights in
and around Granville. At last we must say it was a great idea and actually the main
idea of the Douzelage and of connecting young people.
A group of 28 persons visited Sherborne after having been invited by the Sherborne
Historical Society. The people stayed at host families. The Society offered the
visitors an interesting programme with nice visits and fascinating lectures. The
visitors were very grateful for the programme and the hospitality.
For a weekend in September the Kötzting "König Ludwig's Verein" King Ludwig's
Club of Kötzting, paid a short visit to Judenburg. They saw the main sights of
Judenburg and then they went on their way to see the horses of the Spanish riding
school near Köflach and visited Graz the capital of Styria.

A class from the Holstebro commercial school is visiting the secondary school of
Cham.
The Mayor of Sherborne Mr Clark with his wife visited the town of Sušice. They were
guests of the Mayor, met the local Douzelage committee and went sightseeing.
Douzelage General Meeting in Granville (F)
A Lingua project between schools of Türi and Sherborne is starting this autumn.
Pupils of the local grammar school participated in Pupils’ Douzelage Club organized
by Sherborne Prep School in autumn. As the pupils are young and their knowledge
of English is not very good they stopped chatting after some time.
A party of young musicians from the Gryphon School travelled to Meerssen and
sang in various venues in the area
A group of social workers and social officers, 10 persons from Türi Town Council
and Government are participating in a seminar of social topics in Karkkila.
The Chamber Choir from Kötzting goes to Judenburg for a common concert and an
evening together with “Voces Judenburg”. In connection with this visit, they were led
to see the sights in and around Judenburg. First of all the Romanesque Cathedral of
Seckau.

The choral society Türi Kammerkoor from Türi visited Karkkila and the local choral
society Karkkilan Viihdekuoro. The choral societies gave a joint concert in Karkkila,
the concert was a great success and had a lot of audience. All the 30 members of
Tari Kammerkoor were accommodated by the members of the local choral society.
The Chamber Choir from Kötzting goes to Sušice for a common concert and an
evening together with the “Svatobor Choir”.
The Kötzting Shooting­Club (KSC) goes to Sušice to meet the members of the local
club there and to hold a small and large calibre and pistol competition.

During ‘Days of European Integration’ in Chojna there was a presentation of
Douzelage (Power Point presentation prepared by Meerssen Douzelage Committee
was used)
The schools from Türi took part in drawing competition on the subject of Festival
and Celebrations and the best pictures were exhibited in Sherborne. A Town
Councillor met a local conductor and discussed cooperation options. Probably the
Türi youth music group 'Uisapäisa' will visit Sherborne in the autumn.
A journalist from Türi was present at the Festival and gave an overview on
Douzelage in local newspaper
The Comenius project with participants from Oxelösund, Preveza, Niederanven and
Köszeg carried out their first meeting in Köszeg in January 2005. A new application
for EU funding is submitted to the International Programme Office for Education and
Training.
Young persons from the Oxelösund sailing club have been registered as participants
in the Granville sailing 2005.
Comenius Project Meeting in Köszeg (Hungary) avec la participation de 2
enseignantes du préscolaire de Niederanven (Carole Stoos et Martine Geib)
22 students and 12 teachers from Sherborne, Chojna and Cherbourg visited
Karkkila and the local school. The theme of this visit was "Snow & Ice" and all kind
of winter sports were arranged for the students as well as a workshop in carving
statues out of snow. There were also workshops in language drama, catering,
media and music. All the guest were accommodated by the local families. This visit
was also a part of the Socrates Lingua project.
Snow & Ice in Karkkila ­ Lingua project "language and Culture through Community
Networks"
The Oxelösund music shool visited Houffalize and Niederanven in February 2005.
So far this means, that the music school has visited Sherborne, Bellagio, Meerssen,
Houffalize and Niederanven to play in shools, churches and squares and to
establish connections with interested pupils and teachers/band leaders for further
arrangements. A group of 40 persons from Meerssen has also made a revisit in
Oxelösund.
The mayor of Kötzting sends identical letters to several Members of the European
Parliament and of the committee for culture and education, Albert Deß, Lissy
Gröner, Ruth Hieronymi und Doris Pack, pleading for a new interpretation and
modification of the subvention guidelines. We have received two favourable answers
in the mean time.
Three 16 year old students from Gryphon School­ Sherborne come to Granville on a
work experience
Class 8 from Realschule Kötzting goes skiing together with Gymnasium Sušice in
Nova Hute/Czech Republic
The music school from Oxelösund performs in Niederanven. 150 youngsters of the
niederanven primary school assisted to this concert. Reception ba the Town council

The staff of Realschule Kötzting and Gymnasium Sušice meet to go cross­country
skiing.
6th – 10th March 2005 pupils of the local Lerch School participated in the last
pupils’ meeting of Comenius Project called My Town – Our Europe that took place
in Granville. They took part in music lessons, sailing, swimming, bowling
tournament and in other attractive activities prepared by Granville group. They went
for a trip to Mt. St.Michel, which they were fond of.

6th – 9th March 2005 Douzelage President Mr Ed Weber and his wife were guests
of the Mayor of Sušice and Douzelage Committee. They did a short sightseeing of
Prague, visited the town hall and a local school, saw some places of interest in
Sušice and nearby surroundings.
Comenius Jules Ferry: Final Meeting in Granville. Children from the Republic of
Ireland, Nothern Ireland, Wales, France, Greece and the Czech Republic (Sušice)
have been emailing information to each other about themselves, their countries,
their schools, their towns, their history and weather reports. "Travelling Teddies"
have been very busy travelling around each of the six countries every year. Final
Meeting in Granville: there were 20 children and 10 teachers together
with their own school to be entertained and carered for!
The brass band Etelii­Jiirvamaa Puhkpilliorkestri from Türi visited Karkkila and the
local brass band Karkkilan Soittokunta. These two brass bands gave a joint concert.
Half of the 34 members of the brass band from Türi were under the age of 18 years.
The audience could enjoy both tradional brass band music and pieces of music
played in a cheerful big band spirit.
Three other 16 year old students from Gryphon School­ Sherborne come to
Granville on a work experience
The brass band of Southern Järva County (Conductor Ants Oidekivi) went to
Karkkila to play together with their brass band. There are 20 students and 15 adults
in the orchestra. The concert was recorded and as the conductors put it, is a good
teaching material.
The Douzelage president initiated in Judenburg a project named ”Re­design
douzelage.org”. The Oxelösund IT­staff has supported this project with technical
assistance. More information will be presented during the Bundoran meeting.
The Douzelage website has now registered some 30000 visitors.
At the end of April a Light Music Choir from Karkkila (Conductor Heikki Valpola)
participated in Contest „Türi Spring Song“ and received a special prize. Together
with Türi Chamber Choir a concert was given.
Two College Malraux classes from Granville at Sherborne Gryphon School

Outdoor activites have been important in cooperation between Türi and Karkkila for
13 years. This summer a trip to Hiiumaa, the second biggest island in Estonia, was
organised to learn more about the neighbours' life. It was already the 10th biking trip
with 30 participants. There are 5 people from Karkkila and 2 from Türi who have
been on all the trips
A group of 40 toured through western France and on their way they paid a short visit
to Granville, where they were heartily welcomed.
40 tourists from Judenburg travelled to the Mont Saint Michel and to Saint Malo. In
the afternoon they went to say "Hello" to the mayor and their friends of Granville.

Houffalize, Niederanven and Granville.

15 people, visited Sherborne and participated in Festival, celebrated to the 1300th
Anniversary of Sherborne on 24­26 June. At the Fair, our handicraft and marzipan
was sold. People also played music and spoke at the Youth Forum.

Youth for Europe program "Politeens" initiated by Köszeg. Participating Chojna,

A dance group from the local dance school visits Köszeg and participates in a youth
camp there. There are sixteen members in this group, two of them are adults and
sixteen at the age of 16­25.
A group of senior tourists from Kötzting were accompanied by Mr. Willi Schlegl to
Hungary.
The cycling club which has members both from Karkkila and Türi made a cycle trip
to Estonia. This club was founded already ten years ago and ever since the cyclist
have met every year either in Finland or in Estonia. Every year the cyclists make a
cycle tour in different parts of the countries.
A Beach Soccer Tournament was the attraction in Judenburg. Players from
Kötzting, Köszeg, Sušice and Bellagio were taking part. B&B were sponsored by the
Douzelage Committee.
10th European Youth Week in Waldmünchen
Sailing and environment second year. Five towns are taking part to the 2005 sailing
and environment project: Oxelösund, Altea, Köszeg, Judenburg, and Houffalize.
The ladies’ basketball team Grengewald Hueschtert / Niederanven comes to
Kötzting for a few days of intensive training
In Sherborne, 13­year­old pupils did a research on Douzelage partners. The
presentation on Türi won and a group of young people are actually coming to see
Türi this autumn.
Türi Business Gymnasium takes part in a 3­year Comenius language project,
involving 10 – 12 year old pupils. The project starts in September 2005 and involves
England, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Estonia
Türi Douzelage Committee has had several meetings where General Meeting in
Bundoran was discussed (14­17 April), preparations to visit Sherbourne Culture
Festival and Meerssen Art and Radio projects were made. Information on local radio
station and artwork by a local artist, Resa Tiitsmaa, was sent. Material for the new
webpage was compiled. Preparation for the youth project „ Let's Make Friends – the
Towns of Douzelage “ which will start in September 2005 and go on until August
2006.

Türi is preparing a study project for all of Douzelage towns. The target groups are
students, their parents and citizens. There are three work packages in the project:
*research work of local students in schools, who will collect the information about
all Douzelage towns and countries. The schools will organize local conferences
about Douzelage, where students will introduce their collected materials about
different towns. *The second package is quiz game on the Douzelage website,
where every Douzelage member will send few questions about their town. For
example, there will be one question during one week and students from member
towns could answer the question by sending e mail to Türi. *Finally the best solvers
and their teachers from each country would participate in the youth camp in Türi in
summer 2006. All prepared instructions we plan to deliver in Bundoran and project
will start in September 2005. We hope to your interest and participation in our
project.
Türi intermediated several contacts between partner towns, such as our School of
Mentally Handicapped Children was of interest to Köszeg, fire brigade contact to
Niederanven and representatives of Luxembourg paid a visit to our firebrigades; Türi
also took part in Sherborne project “Great European Food.
Mr. Ludwig, mayor of Kötzting, goes to Sušice with members of the town
administration and three architects from “Schnabl & Gaiser” to take part in a
workshop on a study about town development in Sušice. Kötzting provides some of
their own documents in this field.
The Kötzting delegation ( 5 people, including two pupils ) takes part in the Meerssen
meeting.
Fourteen councillors and officials from Holstebro visited Karkkila the 22nd of
September 2005 and got acquainted with the Finnish school system and the
methods of teaching

Class 6 from Realschule Kötzting and class 7 from Gymnasium Sušice will spend a
German­Czech project week at “Ökologische Bildungsstätte Hohenberg an der
Eger”.

The representatives of all the local societies, the banks, the students’ unions, the
members of the town board, the headmasters, students as well as all the
inhabitants who are interested in the town twinning activities were called together at
the European Day the 9th of May. A great many had followed the invitation. The
representatives were given information of the Douzelage organisation, its main
purposes, history, ways to act and its activities in the past and in the future. They
were also told of the town twinning policy that was recently resolved at the meeting
of the town council. The town council found it very important to try to get the
representatives of the local societies and especially the young people involved in the
town twinning activities. At the end of this event there was a lively conversation
about the ways of co­operation between the town municipality and the persons
interested in town twinning and some good results were found already.
Pupils of the local grammer school participated in Türi Project 2005­2006 called
Let´s make friends – the towns of Douzelage. Two Czech pupils were awarded the
price.

Chojna organized work experience for the hotel students from Chojna in Sherborne
and Angermunde (Germany) under the umbrella of Leonardo Programme. Eight
students spent 4 weeks working in the hotels in Sherborne (special thanks to the
Sherborne – Chojna Committee for their help) and ten students were in
Angermunde. The project is for 2 years and we will organize similar stay next
summer.

Birdwatch Project in Niederanven with the participation of 50 youngsters from Bad
Kötzting, Chojna, Houffalize, Judenburg, Köszeg, Türi and Niederanven.
In the frame of the Birdwatch project the Administrator of the National Agency of the
"Youth" programme presented to all the participants the European Youth for Europe
programme and its possibilities. By this occasion three young students from abroad,
active in a European Voluntary Service exchange, came to present the EVS
programme. (Very positive response from our youth associations)

The Senior Citizens Club "Natur­ a Reesfrënn" from Niederanven visits Kötzting and
the surroundings. They are welcomed by the town officials and a Touristic tour is
organized by Kötzting Douzelage committee.
Niederanven primary school answered to a request of "Rendez­Vous Européen ­
International in­school encounters for children" initiating a European photo album
project of the start of the new school year by collecting photos of the first day of
school all over Europe
Ed Weber, representing the Douzelage – European Town Twinning Association, is
invited as a speaker by the European Commission to the Europe for Citizens Forum
and the "Golden Stars" ceremony during which the Commission rewarded
outstanding projects of active European citizenship. The subject of his speech is
"From 12 to 25" and reflects the impact the new "Europe for Citizens" programme
has on large town twinnings

Preparatory meeting “Granville Multilateral Youth Exchange Project”

Gymnázium Sušice participated together with Kötzting, Roding and Klatovy in the
Czech­German Project of Friendship organized by Realschule Kötzting
Project "Virtual Reality as a Learning and Teaching tool".
In the framework of Comenius programme Sigulda's 1. primary school has started
new project with Preveza Gymnasium No 1 from Greece ­ "Virtual Reality as a
Learning and Teaching tool". It is financed by European Union and will continue till
the end of 2009. The main aim is to motivate students acquiring foreign languages
using modern technologies. The basic language is English. 20 students from
Greece came to Sigulda this spring. They had possibility to communicate, go
sightseeing and acquire IT together with Sigulda's students. That was a great
chance to improve their speaking skills and make new friends. 20 students from
Sigulda's school will visit Preveza in the autumn. During these exchange visits
students are living in families, spending time together and learning Latvian, English
and Greek. Students will get to know more about culture, history and traditions of
partnership countries. Sigulda Town Council supports this project, controlls our
project expenses as well as helps with hosting. PR specialists inform the society
about the course of the project.
Celebration of the Portuguese national day in Sherborne
The last part of Comenius – Söprus Project went on:
16th­20th May 2007 children and teacher of six countries met in Türi. The
delegation introduced typical national games and taught the others to play them.
Children were accommodated in families where they had the possibility to learn their
friends´ family life and check their knowledge of English
A delegation from Niederanven went to the concert given by the Harmony of
Granville (Normandy) in Nadrin. During the weekend of 1st May the royal Harmony
of Hérou de Nadrin accommodated 40 musicians of the Orchestra Harmony “The
Cape Lihou de Granville”.
Mrs Jenifer Anderson from Sherborne visited Preveza together with the friend of
hers in May 1997, for 7 days.
Volksmusik from Judenburg participated in the cultural programme of the Day of
Sušice
Students of Realschule Kötzting took part in canoeing down the Otava river
organized by Gymnázium Sušice
Comenius project finished in Niederanven with the last project meeting. They were
happy to work with Niederanven, Preveza, Öxelösund and Sigulda. They are ready

The Douzelage was represented by the Vice­President, Alphonse Henrard at the
Twinned Town Conference, Rhodes “Sharing for Europe – Thematic Networking of
Twinned Towns".
Several preparation meetings were held with the president and the vice­president in
order to prepare this conference.

Article/Website "So good they launched it twice" on the launch of the new EC
program in Rhodes and presentation of the new publication, "Sharing for
Tomorrow's Europe" by Mr Pierre Mairesse, with examples of successful networks,

substitute Bellagio. It was excellent, successful, but there were more problems with
the organization.

The president had been invited to the 20th anniversary of the Cultural Routes
Ceremony of the Council of Europe. Besides this ceremony of awards, a fair and a
seminar took place in the Centre Culturel de Rencontre of Neumünster Abbey in
Luxembourg. The certification “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” was also
given to the “Route of Saint Martin”, crossing Niederanven. The award was followed
by a conference entitled: “Cultural routes: political tools for an increased visibility of
the Council of Europe’s values”.
The ceremony took place in presence of Mr Robert Palmer, Head of the Directorate
of Culture and Cultural and Natural Heritage, DG IV of the Council of Europe, Mrs
Octavie Modert, Luxembourg Secretary of State for Culture, Higher Education and
Research and 50 Ambassadors of the Council of Europe Member Countries.
Evaluation form transmitted to all member towns active in the European Youth
Program to fill in and return to the YOUTH & ECORYS Agency, a research and
consulting agency working for the European Commission.
Visit of the DG4 at the Adeps
50 officials from Brussels DG4 were received as guests on 12 June 07, inclusive
Mrs Boon­Falleur, the Head of Unit, Mr. Raivio the Deputy Head of Unit and Mr
Marc Jorna, the Head of Unit of the EACEA, the unit that is dealing with the twinning
applications. It was really a very successful day and I strongly believe that we have
made a big step forward by using this opportunity to show them what the Douzelage
activities are.

Participation of youngsters out the Meerssen region in the annual sailing camp
project in Granville. The Red line of this project was the problem on water
throughout Europe.
From Meerssen 4 youngsters and 2 adult took part in this project. They were very
enthusiastic about their experiences.
“Work Experience In European Hotels 2”­ Leonardo Da Vinci with Sherborne and
hotels from Angermunde, Gut Kerkov and Berlin.
Exchange of artists' exhibition with an exhibition of 6 artists from Karkkila
Treaty of cooperation Stella Maris College and Douzelage Meerssen.
On the 4th of June 2007 there was an official meeting between the board of the
college and the board of the Douzelage, to sign the treaty in cooperation.
Mr. Loety Cohen and Jan Swanenvleugel had made this treaty in cooperation with
the board of the College. The aim is to stimulate the participation of young scholars
in project of the Douzelage and to coordinate better the cooperation between Stella
Maris College and the Society Meerssen in Europe.
Two classes from Fachoberschule Cham go to Holstebro / Denmark and take part in
the classes at the Handelsskole.
The Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has
recently published on its website an article giving detailed information about the
Douzelage, its origins, its network and its website. It was notably the managing
director of the Europaforum, a new department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
destined to handle and inform about European topics, who had called upon the
Douzelage president to present the Douzelage.
In the ambit of the European Intercultural Dialogue Year 2008, the Town Council of
Sesimbra, and more precisely the Sector of Social Work, wants to invite its
Douzelage partners to be their partners in an Intercultural Project, related with
minorities, migrants and the most needed.

The scouts from Niederanven have foreseen to participate to the World Scout
Jamboree held at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex, in the heart of England, the
birthplace of the Scouting movement. They have foreseen coming on down to
Sherborne after the Grand Centenary Jamboree
A delegation of 15 citizens from Niederanven / Luxembourg, members of the
Niederanven Tourist office and members of the local Douzelage committee went to
Bad Kötzting and enjoied a performance of “Der Faust” at the open air theatre. They
had been welcomed by the mayor of Bad Kötzting and their friends of the Bad
Kötzting Douzelage committee.
Students from ZŠ Jilemnického participated on European Youth Exchange Visit to
Granville.
The local Douzelage committee Niederanven welcomed the EUYO (European Union
Youth Orchestra) conducted by Sir Colin Davis, that was on a visit tour in
Luxembourg. A spontaneous performance had been given to a young and interested
audience and the evening was buckled by a common grill party in the local centre of
culture.
Celebration of Sigulda 800th anniversary.
Sigulda is one of Latvia’s most beautiful cities. There are not many places in the
world where the beauty of nature becomes an integral part of the city. Our city does
not have great industries, but it has hills for skiing in the winter and winding roads
along which one can ride a bicycle in the summer. Our motto ­ Breathe Freely! ­
confirms our mental and physical activeness.A city is not created in a short period
of time but over hundreds of years, likewise development of the local traditions and
culture.
In Sigulda everyone can really breathe freely!
Vice­president Alphonse Henrard and the president Ed Weber assisted to this 800th
Anniversary Ceremony.
The first international Douzelage marriage
August 17th Martijn Hosman, active young member of the Douzelage Meerssen,
married Triin Toome, Douzelage member from Türi, on the VIHULA estate in
Estonia. They met two years ago during a conference in Bundoran.
The have lived in the capital Tallinn since 1st November 2007.
It is regrettable that Martijn had to give up his webmaster ship, internet
communication and his cooperation in Public Relation activities in Meerssen.

Days of European Integration in Chojna. The Douzelage President and a delegation
from Sherborne assisted to this ceremony. Meeting with the new mayor and the vicemayor
of Chojna.
In the frame of the certification “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe”, given to
“The route of St. Martin of Tours”, a group of young people, on their way from Arlon
(B) to Trier (D) stayed in Niederanven where also St. Martin had rested. They visited
the St. Martin monument and had dinner with the local Douzelage authorities. The
“Route of St. Martin of Tours” is going to be initiated as a new project in the frame of
an Interreg program. Niederanven will join this Interreg project.
During the Harvest festival a magnificent visit of the Wessex Morris Men (UK) has
enriched the Harvest Festival in Köszeg.
Call for participation in a project that a local community of Judenburg, supported by
the federal territory of Styria, has started in 2006 „Meeting of Judenburg citizens“
where everybody can influence the decisions taken by the local community and to
find ways to do so.
General Meeting for the members of the Society “Meerssen in Europe”
At the General Meeting of the Douzelage Meerssen September 2007 the former
Governor of H.M. the Queen from the Netherlands in the province of Limburg, Mr.
Baron van Voorst tot Voorst, delivered a very interesting speech on the Euregional
cooperation in Europe. After that followed a very vivid discussion.
The local Niederanven association Natur­ a Reesfrënn (friends of Nature and Travel)
mostly elderly people, visited Bellagio. They were welcomed by the municipality with
an extraordinary hospitality.
20 pupils from Handelsskole Holstebro pay a return visit to Fachoberschule Cham.

The mayor of Bad Kötzting, Wolfgang Ludwig, welcomes the group from Holstebro
at the Town Hall. They have a guided tour of Bad Kötzting, then visit the Geodesic
Observatory in Wettzell and hear a lecture on the work being done there given by Dr
Wolfgang Schlüter.
There was the first project meeting of the Comenius project, Köszeg is involved. It is
organized by Sesimbra.
17 teachers and 20 children participated in the meeting in Sušice. The programme
was rich, including common lessons of Geography, English, Music, TV, painting on
silk, trip to Information Centre in Kašperské Hory, match in bowling, concert and
trips to the surroundings and Prague. As a symbol of friendship a lime­tree was
planted in front of Lerchova School
Edition of the book “A Europe of cities and citizens” published by the Hellenic
Republic Ministry of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation, Ministry of
Foreign Affairs stating the Douzelage as "one of the most important international
associations and networks on European and international level".
The Foreigners Board of the municipality of Niederanven organised a “Foreigner’s
Festival”, where the foreign inhabitants of the municipality invited to discover the
cultural, social and economical specialities of their native country. 20 different
countries were represented. The Consuls of Colombia and Croatia had been among
the honorary guests. Culinary specialities alternated with musical performances and
the presentation of arts and crafts. The local Douzelage committee represented the
Douzelage with a stand and a presentation of the different member towns.

Teachers from the music school from Oxelösund visit Sigulda to prepare a visit in
May 2008.
Jean Prost, who was with Claude Boudet and others one of the promoters of the
town twinning between Granville and Sherborne, has died aged 87. Our thoughts
are with Mathilde who still is a member both of the twinning committee and the
Granville Douzelage Committee and her family.

Preparation on the new project on the Romans in Meerssen
In November 2007 Jeremy Barker and Jan Swanenvleugel come together in
Meerssen to discuss the project on the Romans. They think about a project which
will last several years and will also contain items which can be used at school either
primary or secondary. Loety Cohen will cooperate in this project.
“Douzelage Connects Young People to Make Friends. A group of youngsters who
took part at the Köszeg Douzelage Youth Project invited in private initiative 11
Hungarian friends to Judenburg. They were offered an eventful programme partly
sponsored through Judenburg’s community.
A group of youngsters were invited by Judenburg youngsters – excellent example for
a Douzelage initiated, but later self­run program.
The president Ed Weber, the vice­president Alphonse Henrard, Ms Patricia
Salvatore­Moes and Ms Manuela di Pinto attended the "Europe for Citizens Forum
2007" and the 2007 Golden Stars Award in Brussels.
Members of the shooting club of Bad Kötzting go to Sušice /Czech Republic to take
part in an international competition.
The mayor of Bad Kötzting, Wolfgang Ludwig, welcomes the group from Holstebro

A group of students took part in a contest, where they – among others – had to
introduce an international organization. They introduced the Douzelage, not only in
Köszeg, but later during the final in front of several ambassadors. They did win a

Changes in the board of the Douzelage Meerssen
Because of the fact that he moved tot the Northern part of our country, Nico van de
Vliet laid down the chairmanship of the board of the Douzelage Meerssen. Loety
Cohen took up the chairmanship until a new chairman will come.
Joop Hosman had to give the secretariat because of health troubles (operation on
the hart December 2007). Jan Swanenvleugel took over this post till a new secretary
will come. Mrs. Thera Elshout will assist him especially on ICT matters
(Internet communication) She is also a new member of the board.
Another new member of the board is Paul Fleming, an Irishman, who has lived in
Meerssen of 15 years. He will be the new webmaster.
The project " The Romans in the Douzelage" is announced
Lycée La Morandière : European exhibition : “Knowing about European Union
through the Douzelage towns".
Classes could spend an hour with a member of the Douzelage Committee
presenting Europe and the Douzelage towns, and going round the exhibition by
making a quiz.
11 young students were interested and asked to be informed about Douzelage
activities.

In an extra general meeting the board and members of the Douzelage took leave of
Nico van de Vliet in an official and festive way. He has been chairman for more than
10 years in a very energetic way. We owe him a lot because of this long­lasting
dedication.

send him their greetings in the original languages.

Visegrad 4 for European Youth – Project in Köszeg
Judenburg’s partnertowns are 38. It is not easy to connect people, which is the aim
of partner towns within the EU, to further common thinking and to understand one
another. The main problems are the costs for travelling. To offer all active clubs the
same conditions, the community decided to develop a correct sponsoring model for
all club members taking part at festivities of our partner towns. It started on Jan 1
2008. Each active club member will be sponsored under certain demands.
Quiz de l’Europe: 70 attending people. Main purpose: meeting people concerned by
Europe and Douzelage activities.
Carnival with delegations of young people from several Douzelage towns. 8
European Youth (Sherborne and Chojna ) and international young people
(Venezuela, USA, Jordanian) making up of the float, disguise etc. Every body in the
heat of Granville Carnival Madness
A new Douzelage committee was chosen in Chojna
At the 8th of March 2008 (the last one has been only in 2004), the Douzelage
delegations from Houffalize, Meerssen and Niederanven came together for the
Benelux meeting in order to discuss the past activities, the actual and future projects
and eventual improvements on the Benelux cooperation. Word has also been given
to the young representatives of the Douzelage in the person of the director of the
new Youth House of Niederanven Cathy Hoffmann. Another important subject has
been tourism in the Douzelage on regional level.
Sušice´s children choir Včelky participated in the traditional Musikparty in Kötzting
Students from Chojna took part in a march against racism and xenophobia in
Schwedt (Germany).
Comenius – Söprus Project was finished by “Butterflies” project. There was an
exposition in Lerchova School with drawings of butterflies living in our region and
their descriptions both in Czech and English, including a poem about a butterfly.
A school group from Kötzting visited our city, where we organized a school and
town visit, and a cultural program.
ZŠ Hrnčiarska participated on the European Poetry Contest.
Pupils of Realschule Bad Kötzting attend classes at Gryphon School Sherborne
15th English Song Festival organized with the participation of 103 young musicians
from England (Sherborne), Ireland (Bundoran), Germany (Schwedt) and Poland.
Four teachers from Lerchova School are going to visit Bad­Kötzting. They will take
part in teaching at Realchule Kötzting and a discussion about the results of the
project in our regions
From the 23rd to the 25th of April, the president went on a visit to Prienai in
Lithuania. He had been invited by the town officials prior to their accession into the
Douzelage.
We opened an exhibition about all town twinning programs.
The Douzelage extendable displays have been finalized by a professional graphic
design office in Niederanven, hired with the sponsored 300€ of a local member of
the Foreigners Board of Niederanven. Appropriate texts and pictures were chosen to
represent in the best way the Douzelage and its activities.
Two classes (36 pupils) with two teachers from Karl­Peter­Obermaier­Volksschule
Bad Kötzting go to Köszeg / Hungary. They have a guided tour of Köszeg and visit
the Jurisich Miklós Gimnázium Köszeg.
Douzelage Türi General Meeting
Douzelage Exhibition. The aim is to introduce Douzelage, it´s members and
possibilities of cooperation to Zvolen basic schools, secondary schools, NGOs that
might develop further activities on international scale. President of Douzelage, Ed
Weber, accepted the invitation to opening ceremony of the exhibition.

Visit of the Oxelösund's youth brass band to Sigulda.
The ancient history of Oxelösund goes back to the Viking Age due to the natural
connection to the Baltic Sea and passages for boats along the coast and inside the
archipelago. Oxelösund plays an important role in the Stockholm­Mälar region.
Swedish Steel Company the biggest company in the county and a world leading
company in the field of quenched and tempered steels. The port of Oxelösund is
one of Sweden´s top ten ports, when it comes to volumes of solid goods. As a
member of International Douzelage Sigulda has established good relationships with
Oxelösund. Their youth brass band will visit Sigulda with 35 pupils offering two
proformances at Sigulda's music school concert hall "Baltais Flīģelis" as well as at
Sigulda's 1st primary school. This event will take place from 22nd to 24th of May,
2008.
The Leonardo project of Chojna about work experience in the hotels in England
(Sherborne) and Germany (Angermunde and Berlin) in the summer 2008 was
accepted and we will get 41 500 Euros
cyklo­tourists from Granville will spend two days in Zvolen – to discover it´s beauty:)
– on their way to Poland.
Adeps 2008 in Houffalize with the participation of Chojna and 30 children and three
teacher from Sušice, one class of the Collège Malraux from Granville
15 bikers (ages ranged from 50 to 72 years) from Granville will go for a journey of
1,000 km along the banks of the Danube from Donaueschingen in Germany to
Zawoja in Poland through Austria, Zvolenin in Slovakia and Hungary. A first year
project that is planned to go on growing in the future.
15 students from Gymnázium will participate in VI4 in Hungary.
Students from ZŠ Hrnčiarska will participate on Global Warming – Summer 2008 in
Öxelosund.
”What can young people do about global warming” in Oxelösund with the
participation of Chojna, Zvolen, Sušice, Judenburg and Granville.
Douzelage General Meeting in Chojna dealing with social exclusion in small
communities
A Judenburg delegation will visit Oxelösund to attend a community meeting and to
exchange thoughts concerning the project “Meeting of Judenburg Citizens – We help
to develop using our creative power”
