Fabrizio Michelassi, M.D., F.A.C.S., is the Lewis Atterbury<br />

Stimson Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department<br />

The Department of Surgery<br />

at <strong>New</strong><strong>York</strong>-Presbyterian Hospital/<strong>Weill</strong> <strong>Cornell</strong><br />

<strong>Medical</strong> Center is pleased to announce the appointment<br />

of <strong>Daniel</strong> <strong>Cherqui</strong>, M.D. as Professor of Surgery<br />

and Chief of our newly-created section of Hepatobiliary<br />

Surgery and Liver Transplantation. This program<br />

expands <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong>-Presbyterian Hospital’s<br />

Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation and<br />

provides this vital service to more patients needing<br />

liver transplantation.<br />

An internationally-renowned and highly experienced<br />

liver surgeon, Dr. <strong>Cherqui</strong> has contributed major<br />

advances to the field , including pioneering work on<br />

minimally invasive liver surgery and he was the first<br />

to use laparoscopy in living donor liver transplantation.<br />

Dr <strong>Cherqui</strong> has also contributed innovative<br />

techniques for major resections that require open<br />

abdominal surgery. This includes resection of large<br />

tumors, multi-stage resections and resections that<br />

bridge patients to liver transplantation.<br />

Dr. <strong>Cherqui</strong>’s expertise includes the comprehensive surgical management of diseases of the liver, pancreas<br />

and biliary tract, including management of primary and secondary liver cancer. Of note, in combination<br />

with other surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, Dr. <strong>Cherqui</strong> offers surgical treatment to patients with<br />

colorectal or endocrine cancers with synchronous liver metastases. Under Dr. <strong>Cherqui</strong>’s leadership, the new<br />

hepatobiliary and liver transplant program at NYP/<strong>Weill</strong> <strong>Cornell</strong> provides patients with state-of-the-art,<br />

personalized care for their liver disease through a multidisciplinary approach.<br />
