Board Message
from the chairman
It may be summer and vacation time for most our Members but your board continues spending
the better part of its time preparing to meet the challenges of the new fiscal year head on. Your
Board has made great strides to understand the dynamics of our economy and how it affects our
members and our future. Our Ad Hoc Marketing and our Membership committees have
recommended changes to our marketing approach that will ensure member growth and the Board
is in the process of implementing these recommendations. The Board appreciates the support of
the membership especially as it related to the by-law change permitting the Board the ability to
create new classifications of memberships. We have been working with an experienced marketing consultant in the survey
of Boca Pointe residents and the development of new membership programs, and we will soon present to the membership
their findings and recommendations.
I also want to commend the new chairman of the Boca Pointe Community Association, Larry London, for his willingness
to work with me to forge a new and productive relationship between the BPCA and BPCC. Larry is a member of our club
and served with me on the Finance Committee during my tenure as Treasurer and Chairman of that committee. We have a
great working relationship and will meet monthly with our GM and the BPCA Executive Director to find ways to promote
the interests of our community and continue to make Boca Pointe a great place to live. I also want to thank Larry for
appointing me to serve on the Strategic Planning Committee of the BPCA.
Our senior management must be commended for their leadership. Paul Volin has articulated a vision for the future of
Boca Pointe Country Club and has, on more than one occasion, met with the membership to help them understand that
changes must be made in our business model. I hope that all of our members support the Board’s efforts to affect these
changes. Helen Karpel has worked closely with Paul and the Board finding ways to reduce costs during this period of
declining membership. During the budget process that will begin in a few weeks, every element of the finances of the Club
will be analyzed in great detail. Our goal is to minimize the impact of these hard economic times and retain most, if not all,
of our dues-paying members.
Although we’ve postponed some of the major building projects that were designed last year, we still are making some
important changes. Work has already started on the lobby of the Athletics Center and in the Center Court Café. These
modifications are long overdue and are being made without the necessity of an assessment, utilizing funds accumulated in
our capital fund.
Finally, as you are all aware by now, our General Manager, Paul Volin is retiring in the fall. In anticipation of this event, we
have retained the services of Search America, a leader in the field of private club management search and consulting services
to assist the Club in selecting our next General Manager/Chief Operating Officer. This firm was unanimously
recommended by our Ad Hoc Search Committee. This firm has studied every aspect of the club’s operations and has
assisted the Board in the development of a detailed description of the position.
I would be remiss if I didn’t commend my fellow Board members for their work and vision. Each of them has devoted
many hours working on your behalf. Your Board of Governors has a shared vision and is working tirelessly and
cooperatively to make our Club a success. My thanks also to all of the committee members who volunteered to serve their
fellow members.

ADULT TENNIS CAMP
The three day camp focused on playing strategy and stroke
analysis combined with conditioning. Participants honed their
skills in small groups rotating among the Boca Pointe
teaching professionals. Drills were designed to fit the groups
playing levels.
TEAMS
Ladies Palm Beach County League tentatively will begin the
last week of September. Men’s Grand Slam League begins the
first week in October. Clay Mates Fall League begins
September 30th. Senior Men’s and Women’s Leagues begin in
January. USTA Leagues begin in September.
SUMMER TENNIS GUEST POLICY
Effective from May 1, 2009 to September 30, 2009, free
tennis guest days will be on Monday and Thursday at Center
Court and Friday at the Athletics Center; there will be no
restrictions on the number of times a guest may play. Playing
with a guest is subject to space availability after members have
been given a chance to reserve a court through the Chelsea
system.

Over 110 members turned out for the Wilson Demo Day.
Members had the opportunity to try the new line of Wilson
Racquets. Staff from Cliff Drysdale Tennis joined the Boca
Pointe Tennis Pros in leading the participants in on-court
drills and games. All players went home with a gift from
Wilson and have been entered in a drawing for the Grand
Prize.

NEW SUMMER GUEST POLICY
Effective May 1st – September 30th the following guest
policy will be in effect:
A Golf Member may bring up to three guests at the same
time and pay only a cart fee for each guest during a
calendar month.
A Golf Member is allowed to bring the same free guest
only once a month. If a person has already been a free
guest in the month, any Golf Member that brings the same
guest again that month will be billed a flat rate of $35.00
plus tax for their guest.

Tuesday – Friday: All Day
Saturday: After 11:45 a.m.
Sunday: All Day
In addition, from May 1st – September 30th the
limitation on the number of times a guest may play has
been lifted.
Effective May 1st – September 30th Limited Golf
Members, Tennis Members and Club Members will be
billed $35.00 plus tax for 18 holes of golf.
TEE TIME CANCELLATIONS NOTICE
In an attempt to assist the staff in making accurate tee time
adjustments we are asking that cancellations be made by
the group captain or individual who is actually canceling.
NEW POLICY – WALKING THE COURSE
Effective immediately members may walk the course after
4:00 p.m. using a carry bag. Members walking must
check-in in the Golf Shop or Bag Room and Club
Members, Tennis Members and Limited Members will be
charged the summer fee of $35.00 associated with their
membership.

Don’t have time to go on a whole spa vacation A day spa
can give you a chance to relax and enjoy some treatments
without packing your bags. Here are some ways to make
sure you enjoy your time at the day spa.
1) Take care in choosing a day spa. Look for:
Friendly, nurturing staff, from the person at the front desk
to the massage therapists, estheticians & nail techs. All
therapists should be licensed.
• A quiet, relaxing, well-designed environment. It will
usually have soothing music, low lighting and pleasant
aroma.
• A clean, sanitary environment.
• A menu that explains the treatments and staff that can
answer any questions in detail.
2) Select your spa treatments.
The basic spa treatments are massage, facial, body
treatment, manicure and pedicure. A massage will help
you get rid of muscle tension. (A Swedish massage is a
good place for beginners.) A facial is a deep cleansing of
your face and a body scrub treatment exfoliates and softens
the skin on your body. Most spas offer manicures and
pedicures. You can also combine services—a massage and a
body scrub is a good combination (receive body treatment
first) or a massage and a facial (receive the massage first.)
Most spas have a meditation room or area that lets you
quiet your mind.
Although most spas have lockers that lock, you might want
to leave valuables at home.
5) Enjoy your spa experience.
You generally remove your clothes for massage and body
treatments, but you are draped with sheets or large towels.
Relax. Take slow, deep breaths before your treatment
begins. Envision every muscle in your body relaxing.
Be open to the experience.
Communicate with your therapist. If you have any
feedback on the temperature or the amount of pressure,
make the therapists aware.
You can talk or not, as you prefer. The therapist usually
follows your lead.
6) Be appreciative.
When the treatment is over, take time to slowly reintegrate,
rather that rushing off.
A tip of 18%-20% is appropriate.
7) Extend the spa experience at home.

Drink plenty of water before and after services to enhance
the benefits of your treatments.
Don’t eat for at least an hour before or after your massage.
Arrive early so you have time to enjoy the sauna, steam or
whirlpool before your treatment. If you get in a water pool
shower to get rid of the chlorine before a massage.
Allow your mind to calm down before your treatment.
Take care of yourself at home. Most spas sell the products
they use. Don’t feel pressured to buy, but it is a good idea
to get into a skin care routine at home.

a series. All shows will be held on Friday nights at 7:30
p.m. in the Imperial Room. The cost for the series is
$130 per person and will ensure that you receive the same

Tuesday, August 11 - Meet singles from St. Andrews
Country Club, Boca Woods and Broken Sound at our Au
Bar. Cost: $10 per person for members and guests.
Time: 5-7 p.m. in the Main Lounge. Cost includes 1
drink of house wine, beer, well cocktail or soda and hors
d’oeuvres.
Tuesday, September 8 - Invited clubs to be announced.
Future Special Au Bars will be announced. They will be
held on the second Tuesday of each month. Different
clubs will be invited to join our members at the Au Bars.
There is a singles’ table available every night in the Grand
Café. If there is a wait for a table and the singles’ table is
not occupied, then that table will be utilized by other
members.
Card Play
Due to popular demand, there will now be another
Duplicate Bridge Night! It will be held on Monday
evenings beginning October 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the
Imperial Room. It will be directed by John Black and run
the same as Duplicate Bridge on Wednesday evenings.
There will be a separate, sanctioned section for players
with 0-50 points. Anyone needing a partner, should
attend and every effort will be made to find a partner for
you. Cookies, brownies and fruit will be served. The cost
is $6.39 inclusive.

SIX PILATES PRINCIPLES
Joseph Pilates originally called his work “contrology.”
He considered this to be a body/mind/spirit approach to
movement founded on the integrative effect of principles
such as centering, concentration, control, precision,
breath and flow. Whether one is working out on a mat
or using Pilates equipment, like the reformer or
Cadillac, these basic principles infuse each exercise with
intention and fullness of expression:
1) Centering: Physically bringing the focus to the
center of the body, the powerhouse area between the
lower ribs and pubic bone. Energetically, Pilates
exercises are sourced from center.
2) Concentration: If one brings full attention to the
exercise and does it with full commitment, maximum
value will be obtained from each movement.
3) Control: Every Pilates exercise is done with complete
muscular control. No body part is left to its own
devices.
4) Precision: In Pilates, awareness is sustained
throughout each movement. There is an appropriate
placement relative to other body parts and trajectory for
each part of the body.
5) Breath: Joseph Pilates emphasized using a very full
breath in his exercises. He advocated thinking of the
bellows—using them strongly to pump the air fully in
and out of the body. Most Pilates exercises coordinate
with the breath and using the breath properly is an
integral part of Pilates exercise.
6) Flow: Pilates exercise is done in a flowing manner.
Fluidity, grace and ease are goals applied to all exercises.
The energy of an exercise connects all body parts and
flows through the body in an even way. Pilates
equipment like the reformer, are very good mirrors of
one’s flow and concentration as they tend to bang
around and suddenly become quite “machine-like” if
one loses ones control and flow.
The Pilates principles may sound a bit abstract, but the
integration of these principles accounts for the balance,
and ease that one can experience as a result of practicing
Pilates.
