SUNDAY december 4TH, 2011

LORNE
RACE #4 : VICTORIA
Welcome to the
Anaconda Adventure Race at LORNE
On behalf of Rapid Ascent, Anaconda and our corporate partners, welcome to the Anaconda Adventure Race at Lorne the
finale of the 2011 Anaconda Adventure Race National Series.
As the birth place of the Anaconda Adventure Race 7 years ago it is always with a smile on our faces that we return to Lorne
for ‘The Anaconda’ in December each year. We like it down here, we like the rolling hills of the Otways and its dense covering
of rainforest and bushland, we love the Southern Ocean and its rolling swells and protected waters of Loutit Bay and we like
the natural setting of the Lorne foreshore, flanked by bush, grass, beach and bakeries... does it get any better
It is also nice to return to Lorne year after year knowing you are stronger, fitter and healthier and we speak not just about
the competitors, but about adventure racing in Australia full stop. The entries for the Lorne Anaconda are pouring in and we
look set to crack a record field at the 2011 event. But beyond the Anaconda Series, it seems that adventure racing and the
sports it brings together are continuing to grow at a steady rate and going ‘off-road’ is becoming far more accepted by the
wider population.
We must thank you, the competitors, sponsors and stakeholders for this growth and enthusiasm, it is people like you (and
the 4 seven timers lining up this year) who are behind this expansion and it brings a smile to our faces when we see people
enjoying their exercise out in the wilderness. Thank you for your support.
But for now, let’s race! Please read the following event information carefully as it includes all the details you’ll need to know
to make the most of your adventure weekend down at Lorne on December 3rd and 4th. Look after yourself between now
and race day, and take care on your travels to Lorne because this is one event you’ll be sorry to miss.
Race hard, race smart and have fun – we’ll see you at the finish line.
LORNE ACCESS & PARKING NOTES
The Anaconda Adventure Race weekend will bring a significant increase to the number of cars in and around Lorne. No-one
wants to be stuck in traffic nor walk away with a parking fine so just be aware of the following points.
Parking in Lorne throughout the weekend:
• Parking in and around the immediate Lorne foreshore area is limited and bylaw officers will be patrolling streets and
fining people who are parked illegally.
• There is plenty of parking near the pier, along Erskine River just north of Erskine Resort and in the streets behind
Mountjoy Parade (Great Ocean Road). E.g. Smith Street, Fern Avenue, William Street, Otway Street and Grove Street.
• You will not need to use your car during the event, so leave your car at your accommodation and walk to the expo area.
The MTB to Team Run transition area (T4) is only 1.5km from the finish.
• Allow yourself plenty of time before the start to drop off your kayaks and mountain bikes into T1 and T3 (Lorne
OLD GOLD Foreshore) COAST on COAST Sunday morning. QLD GOLD QLD / AUGUSTA, COAST / QLD WA / WA AUGUSTA, / LORNE, / LORNE, VIC WA V
GINGER BEER once you’ve crossed the line. These refreshing, non alcoholic Ginger Beers will be free to
collect from the competitor’s fruit stand immediately adjacent to the finish line, but are limited to one
drink per competitor (please).
If you’re after something a little stronger then the Event Bar will also be serving beer (of the alcoholic kind!) and wines all
weekend. What better way to catch up with friends or celebrate a great weekend down south than with a drink in the bar
right in the middle of the event expo area on the Lorne Foreshore where you can enjoy the race atmosphere and watch
people crossing the line. [Please remember that alcoholic beverages bought from the bar can only be consumed within the
cordoned off bar area.]
COURSE MAP
LORNE
RACE #4 : VICTORIA

OCEAN SWIM – 1.9KM
Swimmers enter the water from the beach on the ocean side of the pier and then swim around a large pink buoy beyond the
end of the pier (keep buoy on your left) then swim towards the Lorne foreshore. Swimmers then proceed towards the Lorne
Surf Life Saving Club, turn right around a buoy (keep buoy on your right), then swim parallel to the beach, rounding a final buoy
just beyond the rock groyne (keep buoy on your left) to swim into the beach. Run along the beach and then to the TA and the
start of the paddle leg.
The Swim Leg
• All competitors MUST start the swim by 8.05am. If you are more than 5 minutes late you will NOT be allowed to start the
race.
• All swimmers must wear the orange swim caps provided at registration.
• You may use a PFD (life-jacket) and/or snorkel and mask if you are a weak swimmer, however people using these devices
will start at the back of the main field.
• Hand paddles, flippers and other propulsion devices are not permitted.
• You are permitted to rest on a rescue craft if required without penalty.
Lorne Beach Transition (T1)
• NOTE – the plan for T1 is the same as 2010 with the transition between swimmer and paddler taking place inside the bike
compound on the grass (rather than on the beach) so that all transitions occur in the one place. Please note the following
guidelines:
• Team paddlers must stay in the T1 transition area and meet your team swimmer in the designated teams transition area
(northern side of bikes) and exchange the bib and timing band there (refer diagram below).
• Paddlers must not crowd around the entrance to the transition area but meet your swimmer at your bike (make sure the
swimmer knows where your team bike is!)
• Individuals are advised to transition between swim gear and paddle gear next to your bike – so all your gear is located at
the one spot
• Boats and paddles must be placed in the appropriate location on the beach according to your team number (we will have
signs advertising number zones)
• Individuals and team paddlers must have your paddles located next to your boats on the beach (not in the bike compound)
• Support crews, team swimmers or anyone other team member cannot provide any assistance to competitors inside the
transition area or with launching of boats.
• Race bib MUST be worn
over your wetsuit and
MUST NOT be removed
until inside the Transition
Area. This applies
to teams and individual
competitors.
• Teams, be sure to pass
on the bib AND timing
band to your team-mate
and fasten the timing
band securely around the
ankle.
• Boats and other paddling
equipment must be deposited
in the transition
area(s) after 6:00am on
Sunday morning.
Safety actions in case of an
emergency or difficulty:
• Raise one arm if assistance
is required and call
for help. There will be
numerous jetskis patrolling
the swim leg.
• If you hear a continuous
siren, horn or whistle then
exit the water as soon as
practicable.
FITNESS PADDLERS AUSTRALIA OCEAN PADDLE 13 KM
Paddlers enter the water through the shore break and then head across Loutit
Bay, keeping the first buoy just off the beach to their left and keeping an eye out
for any swimmers who may be off course. Paddlers continue around the pier and
Point Grey and paddle parallel to the shore to a large pink buoy set off the Sheoak
River mouth (approx. 3km south of the pier).
Paddlers do a U-Turn around this buoy (keep buoy on your left) then paddle back
along the coast, past Point Grey and then make a diagonal course across Loutit
Bay aiming for the last set of houses in North Lorne and another pink buoy. Turn
left around this buoy to then paddle back towards the Lorne Foreshore, paddling
around the buoy in front of the Surf Life Saving Club (Keep buoy on your right) and then into the beach. Take care when landing
at the beach. Leave your boat high up on the sand before completing the short 70m run to the transition area.
The Paddle Leg
• When launching at Lorne Beach, select a position well away from other paddlers about to launch, as any capsized boat
in the surf zone will wash back to shore.
• Take care going around Point Grey, steer about 100 metres wide (to the left) of the pier to avoid a reef with large breaking
waves
• For kayakers using an enclosed cockpit style of craft, spray skirts MUST be worn and fastened prior to leaving the
beach.
• Select a boat that is suited to your ability in all conditions – not just flat water. It is quicker, safer and easier to be in a
slow and stable boat rather than a fast boat you fall out of several times.
• It is compulsory for all paddlers to wear an approved buoyancy vest (PFD Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3) and helmet (bike
helmet is okay) for the entire paddle leg.
• The race bib must be worn over the PFD (and any
hydration backpack) as the outermost garment.
• There will be numerous water safety craft. They can
assist you, if required, to get back into your boat
(without penalty).
• The Ocean Paddle leg may be shortened depending
on weather conditions with any changes communicated
at the competitor briefing at 6:00pm on
Saturday.
Lorne Foreshore Transition (T2)
• Team runners must wait in the designated teams’
transition area (northern side of the bikes) and
complete the transition of race bib and timing band
in this enclosure - not on the beach.
• Individuals and Pairs must have their running
gear next to their bike in the fenced off transition
area and perform your transition there. Leave your
paddle with your boat and place your other paddling
gear next to your bike for your support crew (or you)
to collect later.
• When paddlers land at the Lorne beach you must
leave your boat high up on the beach so they are
out of the way of other competitors – your support
crews can help.
• Support Crews can assist receiving competitors’
boats on the beach at T2.
• The race bib must remain on until paddlers are
inside the TA and the transfer of race bib and timing
band must take place in the fenced off bike transition
area. The bib must be the outermost garment,
over the top of hydration systems etc.
• Support crews are encouraged to collect your
team’s boats shortly after your paddler has landed
and not leave it until the end of the day. Support
crews will need the kayak collection token to identify
and retrieve their boats.

...FITNESS PADDLERS AUSTRALIA OCEAN PADDLE CONTINUED
• Running equipment may be left at the TA after 6:00am Sunday
• All kayaks and remaining equipment must be collected by 4:00pm on Sunday at the latest (although we encourage support
crews to collect them as early as possible).
Paddle leg changes in extreme weather
• Due to weather conditions, we may change the paddle course. We will announce any changes to the paddle course at
the competitor briefing on Saturday evening.
• If we are unable to advise the paddle course at the Saturday briefing, there will be a second emergency briefing at
6:00am on Sunday morning at the Lorne foreshore finish area. Any changes to the course will be posted on the event
notice board in the Expo.
Safety actions in case of an emergency and difficulty:
• If assistance is required by water safety personnel, raise your paddle and wave it to attract attention and tell other
competitors you need assistance and to pass the message on. If you get into trouble at sea, ALWAYS stay with your boat
until water safety personnel arrive.
• If you hear a continuous siren, horn or whistle then exit the water as soon as practicable.
COASTAL / TRAIL RUN 15KM
Runners exit the TA and run along the sandy foreshore, going under the Lorne Pier, around Point Grey and continue along
the rocky and sandy foreshore to the first bay / beach you come to (St George River). Runners must pass under the Great
Ocean Road (involving a short swim / wade through the river) and then along the marked foot tracks beside the river and
into the hills.
Continue along the marked route on a mixture of narrow walking tracks and 2WD / 4WD roads over Allenvale Road (twice),
past Phantom Falls and up and down several hills in the bush. The route will ultimately lead you down a steep hillside on a
very faint track, over a creek and up a steep sided hill on the other side to then pick up tracks that return you to the Great
Ocean Road at the St George River. Runners must again pass under the GOR (via a short swim / wade) and then return to
the Lorne Foreshore transition area via the rocky foreshore and into the MTB transition.
The Run Leg
• The course and all intersections will be marked with coloured (pink fluoro) tape and arrows, but you can still get lost if
you don’t pay attention. Keep your eye out for trail markers at all times.
• Competitors must not cross the Great Ocean Road or any sealed road. To do so will result in instant disqualification.
• No assistance from team mates or support crews is allowed during the run leg.
• The run course is not closed to the public and you may encounter walkers, fisherman, kids, tourists, dogs… Please be
respectful of other users of the coastline and trails.
• It is compulsory for all runners to carry a First Aid Kit comprising 2 x crepe bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 1 x triangular
bandage, 2 x non-stick wound dressing pads and a pair of surgical gloves. These are available for sale at the race
registration area for $15
Lorne Transition (T3)
• Team MTB riders must wait in the fenced off transition area and must change race bib and timing band next to your
bike. Please do not crowd around the entrance to the fenced off transition area but leave space for other teams to enter
and find their team mates.
• Individuals are advised to transition from run to cycling gear beside your bike.
• Only the team MTB rider is permitted inside the fenced off transition area. Support crew and other team mates are NOT
permitted inside the TA to assist their competitors. This will be strictly enforced.
• The race bib must remain on until runners are inside the transition area. The race bib must be the outermost garment
and go over the top of hydration systems etc.
Safety actions in case of an emergency or difficulty:
• If you become injured and require assistance, stop moving and stay where you are. Tell the competitors that pass you to
alert the next race marshal and advise them of your location.
• If you become lost, backtrack along the trail you followed to return to the marked course.

you will pass a green flag. Once past the green flag you can put the hammer down. This short 300m section must be ridden
under “controlled conditions” which means no passing of other competitors. After riding past the green flag turn left up the
very steep Waverly Street and into the hills.
The mountain bike course for the 2011 race is quite different from the course ridden over the last 5 years with competitors
tackling the steep 5 Mile Track climb than extends beyond the top of Waverly Street. This track has several steep ‘steps’ that
result in riders climbing nearly 400m in less than 5km before a flowing descent down a fire road, along some rolling single
track and then down beside the fairways of the Lorne Golf Course. Riders continue through the cemetery and then MUST
DISMOUNT to cross the Deans Marsh Rd before getting back on their bikes to ride along Dorman Street, under the Great
Ocean Road bridge at Stony Creek and then ride back along the beach and hardened rock platform to the TA enclosure at
North Lorne.
The Mountain Bike leg:
• The course and all intersections will be marked with coloured (pink fluoro) tape, arrows and witches hats but you can
still get lost if you don’t pay attention. Keep your eye out for trail markers at all times.
• All riders MUST DISMOUNT AND PUSH THEIR BIKES where directed by marshals when crossing the Deans Marsh Rd
and may only continue riding once they have crossed the road. Any rider not stopping when instructed to will incur a 30
minute penalty (this is for your safety!)
• After passing under the Great Ocean Road bridge onto the beach, riders must stay on the beach and tidal rock platform
all the way to the TA. The Great Ocean Road and footpaths are out of bounds.
• All roads and tracks are open to the public and normal road rules apply. Please be respectful of other users and obey
the road rules. Any participant
who disobeys road rules is subject
to disqualification.
• It is compulsory for all mountain
bike riders to carry a First Aid Kit
comprising 2 x crepe bandages,
6 x wound closure strips, 1 x
triangular bandage, 2 x non
stick wound dressing pads and
a pair of surgical gloves. These
are available for sale at the race
registration area for $15
• Marshals are present at key
points and traffic intersections
to direct you, the competitor.
They are NOT there to stop traffic
so don’t expect them to do
so.
• Be careful on the descent as the
track includes some open waterbar
drains and other obstacles.
Ride within your ability level.
DO NOT cause danger to other
riders.
• We recommend that all riders
carry spares, including pump,
tube, tyre levers, chain breaker,
and multi-tool, as well as water
or hydration fluid. There will be
nowhere to get a drink along the
riding course.
• Support crews are not allowed
to give assistance (e.g. provision
of food or fluid, repairing a damaged
bike etc) anywhere along
the MTB leg.

...MOUNTAIN BIKE LEG CONTINUED...
North Lorne Transition (T4)
• Riders must continue all the way to the bike compound and rack their own bike. For teams: your team mates cannot do
this for you and are not allowed into the bike compound. We suggest taking your bike helmet and bike shoes off and
leaving these with your bike and getting your running shoes from your team mates. (Although it is possible to do the
team run in bare feet)
• For Teams: riders must exit the bike compound and then meet their team mates before commencing the team run.
• For Teams: there is no need to transfer the bib or timing band to another team mate. The rider must keep these on until
the team has crossed the finish line.
• Support crews and team mates are NOT permitted to drive to North Lorne. There is no parking available. We recommend
that you walk or ride (or paddle or swim!) there.
• We strongly recommend support crew (if you have them) take your mountain bike out of the compound as soon as you
depart on the final run leg. Support Crew: don’t forget the bike collection token which will be given to the MTB rider
when they collect their number plate at Registration.
• All mountain bikes and remaining equipment must be collected by 4:00pm on Sunday and may only be collected upon
presentation of the mountain bike collection token provided in your registration packs
Safety actions in case of an emergency or difficulty:
• If you become injured and require assistance, stop moving and stay where you are, tell the competitors that pass you to
alert the next race marshal and advise them of your location.
• If you become lost: backtrack along the trail you followed to return to the marked course.
• If your bike breaks beyond repair, you are entitled to walk/jog your bike over the rest of the course to the transition area.
TEAM RUN 1.5KM
Riders rejoin their team mates (individuals / pairs continue) along the beach to the finish area on the Lorne Foreshore:
• All team members must meet at the final transition point at North Lorne and all team members must complete the
entire team run to the finish line within 20m of each other all times.
• Any team who does not complete the final run leg as a FULL team will be listed as an unranked finisher. You may push,
pull, drag or carry your tired or injured team-mates to the finish line. No exceptions will be made to this rule under any
circumstances.
• All runners must run along the beach and inter-tidal zone only: not on the footpath or on the road.
• A photo of your team will be taken as you cross the finish line and we encourage you to wear your event race shirts given
to you at registration if you do not have a team uniform. (Finish photos will be available from the race website)
SUPPORT CREW
Support crews are not mandatory. They can make logistics a bit easier but they will have virtually no impact on your overall
placing if you are organised before the event.
General points:
• All teams will receive two green wrist bands for your support crew as part of your registration pack. Please ensure that
support crew members wear these wrist bands. Without them, they will not be permitted inside the transition areas or
be able to service athletes.
• Support crews may NOT help competitors at any point inside or outside of the designated transition areas listed below.
This extends to the team run, where support crews are NOT allowed to run with competitors.
Specific points and recommendations during the race:
• Support crews are not able to assist inside any transition areas whilst your competitor is in there - competitors must get
changed, find their equipment and move their boats by themselves.
• You are only able to enter transition areas to drop off equipment when your competitor is not there. Entry to the TA will
only be permitted upon presentation of a support crew wrist band (provided in the registration pack of team swimmers,
individuals and pairs).
• You are able (and encouraged) to enter transition areas to collect your competitor’s equipment after they have departed.
We particularly encourage support crews to collect the following gear during the event:
• Collect boats and paddle from T2 on the Lorne Beach - as we have a lot of boats to fit in and otherwise they might be
collected by the tide!
• Mountain Bikes from T4 at North Lorne - just to keep this area empty and under control.
TRANSITION AREA GUIDELINES
The following points and guidelines apply in and around transition areas:
• Race bibs MUST NOT be removed until inside a Transition Area. This applies to teams and individual competitors.
• Only competitors / team members / support crews wearing a wrist band (given out at registration) will be permitted into
transition areas.
• No assistance from support crew or team members is permitted in any Transition Area.
• Competitors can receive assistance to pull on race bibs (especially over PFD’s) from other competitors or from spectators
who are located on the other side of the TA fence
• Your race bib or MTB token (in registration packs) is required to collect your MTB from bike compound. Note that the
MTB token may be given to support crew so they can collect the mountain bike for you after you dismount your bike.
• We will have security at North Lorne Transition Area until 4.00pm, after which any bikes left there are at the owners’
risk.
Transition Opening Times
T1 – Lorne Beach: Swim – Paddle
• Open for boat and paddle equipment to be dropped off after 6.00am on Sunday.
• Note: Boats must be placed in the appropriate location according to your race number (we will have signs advertising
number zones). Paddles MUST be left alongside boats. All other paddling equipment must be located inside the bike TA
compound.
T2 – Lorne Foreshore: Paddle - Run
• Open for running equipment to be dropped off after 6.00am on Sunday.
• Note: Individuals’ run gear must be placed next to your bike.
• Paddle and boat may be collected straight after the transition (preferred) until 4:00pm on Sunday, upon presentation of
the kayak collection token included in your race packs. Any equipment remaining on the beach after 4pm will be left at
owner’s risk.
T3 – Lorne Foreshore: Run – Mountain Bike
• Open for mountain bike equipment to be dropped off after 6.00am on Sunday.
• Bikes can be placed anywhere within the fenced off bike transition area.
• Running equipment may be collected straight after the transition (preferred) until 4:00pm on Sunday. Any equipment
remaining in the transition area after 4:00pm will be left at owner’s risk.
T4 – North Lorne: Mountain Bike – Team Run
• Open for team run equipment to be dropped off after 9:30am Sunday.
• Mountain Bike equipment may be collected straight after the transition (preferred) until 4:00pm on Sunday and only
upon presentation of the MTB collection token included in your race packs. Any equipment remaining in the transition
area after 4:00pm will be left at owner’s risk.

RACE RULES AND CUT OFF TIMES
Prior to being accepted into the event:
• (all participants) must read and sign the Participant Indemnity
• (juniors only - i.e. under 18 on race day)
• have their parent or guardian advise the organisers, Rapid Ascent, of their intention to enter
• parent or guardian must read and sign an authorisation and indemnity
• (paddlers only) must be competent in:
• paddling craft in ocean conditions and entry and exit through surf
• recognising areas of danger in the ocean such as reefs and rips
• ability to self rescue in the event of capsize
• (swimmers & paddlers) must be able to swim 1.9km unassisted in open water
• Participants must wear race bibs provided by race organisers on the outside of their clothing at all times. These bibs
are stretchy enough to be tight when over only a wetsuit while also being able to be stretched over the top of PFDs and
hydration devices. Not wearing a race bib as your outermost garment or not wearing it at all will incur a 15 min penalty
• Competitors must use the same bike frame and wheels for the entire bike leg and may only receive assistance from
other competitors to repair their own bike. Penalty for using someone else’s bike frame or wheels and for lending your
own bike frame or wheels to another competitor is 60 minutes for the borrower and 60 minutes for the lender.
• Competitors must use the same boat for the entire paddle leg and may only receive assistance from other competitors
to repair their own boat. Penalty for using someone else’s boat and for lending your boat is 60 minutes for the borrower
and 60 minutes for the lender.
• No riding permitted in the TA and helmets must be fastened before exiting the TA.
• Any competitor who withdraws from the race MUST notify an official. This is an essential requirement to avoid unnecessary
searches being conducted and emergency services being engaged.
• It is compulsory that basic First Aid Kits are carried by all competitors doing the run and MTB legs. First Aid Kits must
consist of at least 2 x stretch bandages, 6 x wound closure strips, 2 x non-adhesive wound dressings, 1 x triangular
bandage and 1 pair of surgical gloves. The penalty for not carrying a First Aid Kit is 30 minutes.
• All competitors must carry the listed compulsory equipment for each leg. Failure to carry any listed item will result in a
30 minute penalty per item found to be missing.
• Failure to abide by rules may result in time penalty or disqualification.
• All teams are permitted to lodge protests against results or decisions enforced during the event. A judging panel of three
Rapid Ascent Directors will adjudicate on all protests and other contentious matters, and their decision will be final.
• Rapid Ascent has sole discretion to alter or amend the race rules in order to increase the safety of participants or for
any other reason deemed appropriate.

Cut off times
Cut-off times will be strictly enforced
• End Swim by 9:30am (i.e. 1 hour 30 minutes for 1.9km)
• End Ocean Paddle by 11:45am (i.e. 2 hours and 15 minutes for 13km)
• End Trail Run by 2:00pm (i.e. 2 hours & 15 minutes for 14km)
Cut Off procedures:
• For teams who do not make the published cut off times, the next team member will be allowed to continue at the
published cut off time. This team member will not have the race bib and this will signify to officials that this team is still
competing but is unranked.
• All team members are still required to gather at the end of the mountain bike leg for the team run. E.g. if an athlete finishes
their leg 10 minutes AFTER the cut-off, their next team member will have already been sent off at the cut-off. The
person who missed the cut-off will still be required to get him/herself to the final transition area for the team run.
• Individuals who miss a cut off may elect to miss the next leg and continue the race unranked. If they decide to do this
the competitor will have to hand in their bib to signify their unranked status.
If you cannot complete a leg or are forced to stop or withdraw from a leg the following procedures will be followed:
• Your bib will be removed and
you will now be an ‘unranked’
competitor. You will not be
permitted to return to that
discipline but you can recommence
the event with the next
leg.
• If you have been rescued on
the water, you will be taken to
the nearest beach or transition
area. Or if you withdraw
from the leg by landing on
the beach please ensure you
advise a race official of your
location and condition as
soon as possible – this will
save us looking for you unnecessarily.
• When you get to the next transition
area, advise an official
that you did not complete
the leg and hand over to your
team mate who can continue
the rest of the course.
• Your team will be unranked,
but you can still continue the
event.

COMPETITOR EQUIPMENT LIST
The following items are compulsory for all appropriate legs as part of the event rules:
Numbered race bib
The numbered race bib will be provided to individuals, pairs (2) and the team runners at registration. The bib is your relay
baton and must make its way around the entire course with each team member. The bib must be worn OVER THE TOP OF
ALL OTHER CLOTHES AT ALL TIMES. It is a tight-fitting lycra that will not slow you down in the Ocean Swim (it must be worn
over the top of wetsuits), but it is also super-stretchy and will fit over the top of your life-jacket for the kayak leg. Please
remove your race bibs at the end of the event and place in tub at finish line as we recycle and re use them at
other Anaconda events.
Timing band
All entrants will be given a timing band at registration to place around your ankle. This timing band (along
with your race bib) is also the relay baton for teams, so you MUST transfer it from one team mate to the
next, inside each transition area. Take your time securing the timing band and ensure it is properly attached
before proceeding as this will avoid losing the timing band, incorrect times being registered and us going out
to look for you!
NOTE: Upon accepting the timing band at registration you become responsible for wearing it during the race
and then returning it to us at the end of the race. If you withdraw from the event at any time please ensure
you return the band to an event official. Failure to return the band will result in a fee to you of $100 (this is
cost price to us for losing them!)
Wrist bands
ALL competitors must wear the orange wrist band which will be attached by race officials at registration.
Without this you will NOT be allowed inside the transition areas (TAs) and you will NOT be allowed to remove
equipment from TAs. You will also receive two green wrist bands for your support crew. Please ensure that
they wear them as no one without a wrist band will be permitted into any transition area.
Race Number
ALL competitors will have their race number written on their arm and leg during registration. Please DO NOT
wash it off. This number is used if you or one of your team mates either withdraws from the race or does not
make a cut off time.
Kayak stickers - refer to the diagram
You will receive 2 kayak stickers to be placed one on each side of the front of your kayak
Bike number plate
You will receive a number plate to go onto your bike so you can be identified whilst on the bike course. Make
sure you firmly attach the number plate to the handle bars of your bike using the zip ties provided.
Other items provided in your registration bags:
• Kayak, MTB and swim collection tokens. You or your support crew must present these when collecting
the appropriate equipment from each TA.
• Anaconda branded swim cap – these must be worn by all swimmers during the swim leg.
• Competitors high performance race t-shirt.
• Sponsor and event information.
NOTES FROM THE MEDICAL TEAM
Welcome to the Anaconda Adventure Race. We’re sure you will find the course both challenging and exciting. We are here
to assist competitors as much as possible and NOT to hinder their progress. If, however, you require medical assistance
please listen to the medical staff and take their advice. We are there to look after your safety and well-being. We also want
you to finish the race but remember we are professionals whose primary objective is to make sure you are able to front up to
another race in the future.
Some general points worth considering;
• This is a long and strenuous race. Be prepared for the race time to be up to 8 hrs for some competitors.
• Start the race well hydrated: drink plenty of water the day before the race.
• Plan your fluid intake for the entire day. Remember there are NO aid stations on any of the legs. You must be totally selfsufficient
between each TA.
• Runners: tape your ankles if you are susceptible to twists and sprains. Parts of the run course are quite treacherous
underfoot with rocks that can also be slippery.
• Don’t forget to EAT. It’s a long day out there and you need to eat as well as drink. Practise your food intake in training before
race day, as many foods can become intolerable in a race situation. Work out what suits your digestive system best!
• You should have current ambulance membership
• Have fun, stay safe and look after your fellow competitors. All the best from,
Anaconda Adventure Race Medical Crew.
FIRE RISK
Rapid Ascent is in constant communication with DSE and CFA in the lead up to the Anaconda Adventure Race in Lorne and if
fire risk ratings are deemed to be at a level that places the event participants at too greater risk, the event may be amended,
modified or even cancelled. Notice regarding changes to the event as a result of fire risk will be posted on the event website
and at the event centre in Lorne if changes are made before the competitor briefing on Saturday.
year And if you won, what would your victory salute be

HONOUR BOARD
“I’m as strong as ever”
The Anaconda Adventure Race National Series all started at Lorne in December 2005 and was quite revolutionary at the
time. There were not that many other adventure races around and this event was seen as being pretty unique, but that
didn’t stop 917 people and 336 entries entering and giving it a crack.
Now we’re a little older and things have moved on a bit, numbers have swelled, the course has changed a little (although
the ‘new’ MTB leg is very close to the first one raced in 2005!) and adventure racing is nearly mainstream… In fact Adventure
Racing is as strong as ever with events and training groups and customised equipment and media coverage and a very
busy race calendar around the country.
There are 4 individuals who can equally claim to being as strong as ever because there are 4 males who have started and
finished all 6 previous races as either an individual or pair and who are lining up for their 7th Anaconda on December 4th.
We acknowledge and give credit to these 4 people and wish them well on their conquests (when will they stop!).
Tim Devlin Tony Freijah Toby Pettigrew Mark Slykhuis
“We know, we helped make it happen…”
We also give praise to the single sponsor who has been with us from the word go, - Anaconda - a company who is also as
strong as ever and whose name is now inextricably linked with the sport and those who do it.
We encourage you to visit their stand at this year’s race and in the
very least say thank you for making it happen – we certainly will be.
FASTEST LEG TIMES
