Science Labs
All science laboratory tables must be H-frame to ensure stability when being used with chemicals.
IN THE KNOW
Science laboratory work surfaces are positioned at 850mm or 900mm high. This often depends on
the preference of the teacher although 6th form science should always be conducted on a 900mm
high work surface.
Science laboratory arranged with service
pedestals and freestanding tables
• Speckled grey 16mm SGL worktop
• The Capacity Storage has grey doors with blue
ABS edging
• Heavy duty 40mm H-frame science tables with
SGL tops
• Tiered Gratnell tray units
• Lift and turn 2-way gas taps
• Benchtop mounted double sockets
• Mobile fume cupboard
MECHANISM
THE PEDESTAL SCIENCE LAB LAYOUT PROVIDES FLEXIBLE YET WELL EQUIPPED TEACHING FACILITIES
Each pupil should have good
access to a full range of
services, with a minimum of
one gas tap and one socket
outlet per pupil and one sink
per 6 pupils. Ideally pupils are
seated in pairs.
SCIENCE LABORATORY STORAGE FROM THE CAPACITY AND STORAGEWALL RANGES AND DURABLE COMPOSITE STONE WORKSURFACES
Each laboratory should have plastic
seated/wooden seated/wood stools for all
pupils, the teacher and at least one visitor.
Heights of stools should be such to leave
a minimum gap of 250mm between the
stool top and the underside of the bench.
TITLE
PEDESTALS WITH SIDE MOUNTED
SERVICES
The gas supply should
be capable of being
turned off easily. A
solenoid valve should
be positioned close
to the point where the
gas supply enters the
laboratory with the
push button adjacent to
the teachers area, but
not so close to the door
used by pupils that
they can misuse
it easily.
STYLISH SCIENCE LABORATORY PROJECT INCORPORATING A FUME CUPBOARD AND SERVICED PEDESTALS
All laboratories should be general purpose,
i.e. not specifically biology, chemistry, or
physics, although a few will have specialist
facilities such as blackout blinds, or fume
cupboards.
BRUSHED STEEL FINISH TO FITTINGS AND TAPS
Fume cupboards
should be provided
in 33-50% of
laboratories. Fume
cupboards should
be glazed all round
and sufficiently
mobile that they
can be pulled away
from the wall for
demonstration
purposes.
IN THE KNOW
Each laboratory should be sufficiently large
to provide places for 30 pupils working as 15
pairs, each pupil to have 0.36m 2 of work surface
available. Each pupil also needs knee space and
whilst a limited number of pupils may have to sit
sideways to the teacher, ideally no pupils should
have their backs to the teacher.
There also needs to be sufficient free bench
space for setting out long-term investigations,
laying out equipment to be selected by pupils,
several computers/dataloggers and other items
not on pupil work spaces.
The diagram below illustrates the
recommended safe working distances for
pupils in a science laboratory. The health and
safety aspect must be carefully considered as
part of the space planning and design. We
will consider DFES guidelines for health and
safety as well as the best layout for flow to
ensure your laboratory is up to standard.
