Researcher Jonathan A. Supovitz (2001) cites 6 critical components about which
there is wide agreement among researchers and educators:
Professional Learning must:
• show teachers how to connect their work to specific standards for student
performance,
• immerse participants in questioning and experimentation and therefore
model inquiry forms of teaching,
• be intensive and sustained,
• engage teachers in authentic teaching tasks, based on teachers’ experiences
with students,
• focus on subject matter knowledge and deepen teachers’ content skills,
• be connected to other aspects of school changes.
