Researcher Jonathan A. Supovitz (2001) cites 6 critical components about which<br />

there is wide agreement among researchers and educators:<br />

<strong>Professional</strong> <strong>Learning</strong> must:<br />

• show teachers how to connect their work to specific standards for student<br />

performance,<br />

• immerse participants in questioning and experimentation and therefore<br />

model inquiry forms of teaching,<br />

• be intensive and sustained,<br />

• engage teachers in authentic teaching tasks, based on teachers’ experiences<br />

with students,<br />

• focus on subject matter knowledge and deepen teachers’ content skills,<br />

• be connected to other aspects of school changes.
