Science meets Tires – Perspectives for Tire Technology<br />

Conference by IKV and ika on September 11 and 12, 2013 <strong>in</strong> Aachen<br />

Aachen, June 2013 – The <strong>Institut</strong>e of Plastics Process<strong>in</strong>g (IKV) <strong>in</strong> Industry and <strong>the</strong> Skilled<br />

Crafts and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institut</strong>e of Automotive Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g (ika) at RWTH Aachen University jo<strong>in</strong>tly<br />

organise <strong>the</strong> conference entitled "Science meets Tires – Perspectives for Tire Technology"<br />

on September 11 and 12, 2013 <strong>in</strong> Aachen. This <strong>in</strong>ternational conference, which will be held<br />

for <strong>the</strong> second time after 2011, will serve as a platform for professional dialogue between tire<br />

experts and specialists <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry and research. The Conference Manager Dr. Gerard<br />

Nijman comes from Apollo Vredeste<strong>in</strong> B.V. <strong>in</strong> Enschede, <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary exchange between experts from <strong>in</strong>dustry and research looks at <strong>the</strong><br />

importance of <strong>the</strong> tire for <strong>the</strong> automotive <strong>in</strong>dustry: The contact between a vehicle and <strong>the</strong><br />

road is exclusively generated by <strong>the</strong> tires. They determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> transmission and <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

dynamics. The demands made on <strong>the</strong> tires, on <strong>the</strong>ir development and on <strong>the</strong>ir production are<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ously. Maximum efficiency, safety and comfort are of <strong>the</strong> essence, and <strong>the</strong><br />

basis for <strong>the</strong>se characteristics is be<strong>in</strong>g created throughout <strong>the</strong> entire value cha<strong>in</strong> of a tire –<br />

from research and product development to <strong>the</strong> raw material supplier, tire manufacturer and<br />

quality assurance expert.<br />

The presentations and discussions cover <strong>the</strong> entire process cha<strong>in</strong> and provide an outlook on<br />

future trends and developments. The <strong>the</strong>matic focus of this year´s <strong>in</strong>ternational conference<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> design, dimension<strong>in</strong>g and test<strong>in</strong>g of tires. The requirements of <strong>the</strong> automotive<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry and <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g will also be presented.<br />

The speakers come from Apollo Tyres, <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands, Ford Motor Company, USA,<br />

Goodyear, Luxembourg, Tyre Industry Research, UK, and from companies and <strong>in</strong>stitutes <strong>in</strong><br />

Germany which are cos<strong>in</strong> scientific software, Deutsches <strong>Institut</strong> für Kautschuktechnologie,<br />

Ford Research, Fraunhofer ITWM, Harburg-Freudenberger Masch<strong>in</strong>enbau, Porsche,<br />

Volkswagen, and <strong>the</strong> ika and IKV <strong>in</strong>stitutes at RWTH Aachen University.<br />

The conference will be held <strong>in</strong> English.<br />
