Scandal At the Palace!
Princess Elizabeth having a secret
affair with Step-mother’s husband?!
Our insider has reported that
behind closed door, giggling
and romping could be heard
in the bed chambers of Princess
Elizabeth while Mr.
Thomas Seymour was present.
Thomas Seymour, married
to Katherine Parr (Queen
Dowager and stepmother to
Elizabeth), is said to have immediately
befriended the
young princess. Elizabeth has
denied all allegations of the
affair, but things have started to go too far. Elizabeth has recently left
the home of Katherine Parr, and rumor has it that she was sent away for
her own protection. Our insider specified that neither Katherine nor
Elizabeth feel comfortable with Seymour’s actions, and have taken precautionary
measures to ensure Elizabeth’s safety. Despite the scandal,
Katherine and Elizabeth’s relation remains strong. “Katherine treats
Elizabeth as her own daughter. No scandal could shake their bond.” A
servant of the household tells us. As for Thomas Seymour, he has plenty
of issues on his plate. On top of the scandal, he has recently been accused
of high treason. Details of the accusations are suspected to come
out soon.

Life After the
Printing Press
The printing
press has changed
what life is today.
For once, all social
classes have an equal
opportunity to learn
and expand their
knowledge from
books produced by
the printing press.
This effect has not
only made it easier
for people today to
expand their
knowledge but it also
influenced people
to start to read and
learn since they had
the opportunity too.
Another positive effect
has been the
distribution of information
and ideas.
Information can be
spread much easier
and faster, which
this is seen through
out cities. When we
think back and see
how the printing
press has affected society
today in such little time,
you must wonder what is
next? I predict there is
something that we can
share any information on
where the people can read
and write back almost imminently.
The future holds
many things, which the society
should be ready to
discover.

Sports Highlights of the
Week
It is official, the French Jousting
Open champion of 1578 goes to Christophe
Gusto, one of France’s most courageous and
noble knights. Gusto is young, just nineteen
years of age, and looks to be a promising
knight. Before the tournament started, King
Henry III of France had this to say, “My advisors
have told me of Gusto’s strength,
technique and intelligence as a knight, making
his victory none of a surprise to me.” On
his way to victory, Gusto had to endure four
straight days of brutal fighting, cold weather,
and even the flu. To seal the victory,
Gusto had to defeat four time champion,
Ethan Williams of England. Williams has
four championships under his belt, and a
victory against Christophe Gust would have
been his fifth. It is unknown if thirty-one
year old Williams will return next year.
While interviewing Gusto, he had this to say
about Ethan Williams, “I have so much respect
for him, he’s a guy I’ve been watching
since I was ten years old. To get my first
championship victory against him is unbelievable.
After the battle he found me
amongst the crowd and told me he was
proud of me and that the sky was the limit. I
would be honored if I could one day be as
great as him,” Gusto went on to say, “This is
just an amazing feeling, it probably won’t
seem real until I wake up tomorrow morning.”
Gusto is the youngest man ever the
win the French Jousting Open, and the
smallest one too. Standing at just five foot
seven inches, Gusto is small to be a jouster,
but he packs a punch, weighing in at twohundred
pounds he is very difficult to knock
off his horse. It seems as though France may
have found their knight of the future.
During the Renaissance period, Jousting
was a very popular event. Jousting is
when two people sit on horse facing each
other approximately one-hundred feet apart.
They then charge at each other with blunted
lances and attempt to nock each other off
their horses. This sport was very popular for
knights when they weren’t in active battle.
Jousting allowed knights to show off their
skill, balance and strength as a knight, while
also keeping them in good physical shape.
Usually, knights who jousted only did so in
their younger years up until their midthirties.
Eventually, as knights became less
important in combat, jousting was more of a
recreational sport for the public to enjoy. A
seating ring was set up around the jousting
area and fans would gather in the hundreds
to watch. Other sports during the Renaissance
were Tennis, early forms of Soccer,
and Archery, none of which were as popular
as Jousting.

Perspective—
A Growing Artistic Trend
Recently, Leonardo di
Vinci defined natural perspective
as a series of dis-
torted projections that
needs to be integrated
over time in a representa-
tion in the brain as the
eye moves around the
scene. Artists have begun
to use this concept in
their works in an attempt
to make their paintings
look three dimensional.
The effect – a realistic feel
while looking into the
painting. A key step in
achieving perspective, is
the rule that all horizontal
lines must connect
back to a key point in the
painting. That point is the
vanishing point, where
the distance is too great
for the eyes to see. One of
the first examples of per-
spective that we’ve seen
is Giotto’s painting:
‘Jesus Before the Caïf’.
Ever since, perspective
has grown increasingly
popular. While it is suspected
that perspective
art came from ancient
Greece, none of the paint-
ings survived. The first
piece of perspective art
that paved the way to the
Renaissance trend was
from Rome. We suspect
that we’ll see a lot more
of this trend in the future!

Question and
Answer with
Leonardo da
Vinci
We interviewed Leonardo da
Vinci on April 20, 1515, just
five days after his 64 th birthday.
Q: Leonardo, you are now a
very recognized man across
Europe, do you consider
yourself to be an ideal Renaissance
man?
A: To be ideal you must be
perfect, but I do try to model
myself after ‘the ideal Renaissance
man,’ and live by good
life values and always try and
gain knowledge, I believe intelligence
leads to a better life.
Q: Makes sense, what do you
believe can lead a man to be
more intelligent?
A: Many things, as long as you
study many things and focus
on them it doesn’t matter what
you study. You have to try and
master what you study.
Q: I see, and what do you
like to focus on most to expand
your knowledge?
A: There are many things; I
like all the things that I study, I
enjoy paining, it clears my
mind, but many people paint,
such as Michelangelo and
Raphael, and I hate to compete
with anyone but myself. I
would have to say that I love
to study science and architecture,
it fascinates me.
Q: Okay, well than what is
your favorite piece of work?

A: Everything I create has a
bitter sweet feeling, when I am
done I am proud, but I always
feel like I could have done better.
Q: Is that why you never finished
St. Jerome in the Wilderness
in 1840?
A: It is possible.
Q: Very well, well if you had
to choose one that you are
most proud of, which would
it be?
A: If I had to choose? Well I
believe my visions of flying
machines reflect my best work,
though none of them were ever
tested because they were believed
to be impossible. This is
similar to the bridge I designed
to span the mouth of Bosporus,
though Sultan Beyzeid rejected
the project, deeming it impossible.
Q: I’m very sorry about
that… What about the Mona
Lisa, what is all the hype
about?
A: The Mona Lisa, many people
have asked me that, let me
tell you this, some things are
better left a mystery. But if you
can figure that mystery out you
will be a very wise man.
Q: I understand. Well Leonardo,
thank you for your
time, I wish you the best
throughout the rest of your
life, I’m sure you’ll leave a
lasting impact on people for
a long time.
A: Thank you, and it was my
pleasure.

What’s New in Fashion?
This season in northern Europe
it’s all about distorting the natu-
ral figure by padding sleeves,
doublets, and stockings. Italy is
following the trend lightly but is
sticking to more medieval influ-
enced styles. Colors this year are
strong, often dark colors. One
trend that you can spot becoming
more popular is women wear-
ing the low-crowned hat in the
same fashion as the men are.
Other trends that have been
catching on include, heavy mate-
rials, large sleeves, large hip
clothing, and wide-toed shoes.

How to be
a Good
Prince
There were many keys
to being a good prince dur-
ing the Renaissance. The first
key to becoming a good
prince is invading and con-
quering surrounding areas. If
you do this you will prove to
the people that you care
about the kingdom and the
best interest of it. Conquer-
ing surrounding areas will al-
so lead people to feel safe.
The next key to being a good
price is never letting the gov-
ernment think they can
choose a safe path of doing
things. Once this happens,
they will quite planning for
mistakes, and when mistakes
come people will blame you.
The next key to being a fa-
vorable prince is being a pa-
tron of the arts, and honor-
ing the artists of your king-
dom. Once you do this, peo-
ple will believe you want
them to succeed and further
like you. Finally, you must
hold public events and festi-
vals for this people to enjoy.
An example is jousting tour-
naments where all people
can gather and have fun. If
you can do all of these things
right, you would have surly
been a likable price during
the Renaissance.
