JOB SUMMARY
Engineering Technicians (EngTechs) are vitally important to the UK and our economy. They
have the skills and expertise the country needs to deliver 21 st century services, systems and
products. To boost the profile of Engineering Technicians, action is being taken to further boost
their status and recognition.
Three of the UK’s largest Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) have formed a
partnership to drive a mass expansion of registered EngTechs. Supported by funding from the
Gatsby Foundation, ICE, IMechE and IET will promote Engineering Council registration to
Engineering Technicians currently in training and those already employed.
The key aims are to achieve 100,000 registered EngTechs by 2018, and to establish a
sustainable model for registration, so that EngTech numbers continue to grow year-on-year to
2025 and beyond.
This is the first time the three largest PEIs have worked together on a programme of this
scale.
The purpose of the role is to develop and execute the ‘Time Served’ technician project on
behalf of the Engineering Technician Project Development Team, acting as the point of
responsibility to the Business Programme Leader. Through the implementation of the agreed
project, the post holder will lead the recruitment of Engineering Technicians, meeting or
exceeding the targets set out in the three year implementation plan.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Deliver the required numbers of new Engineering Technicians, supplying viable applications to
the appropriate engineering institution within the partnership.
Recruit and line manage any other team members who may be required to support the project
during its lifetime.
1
Uphold the professional values of the three participating PEIs and the Engineering Council,
ensuring the project runs with transparency, fairness and integrity across all areas of its
operation.
Work collaboratively with the three PEI membership teams to ensure integration, alignment
and ultimately, the successful election of technicians to EngTech.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Implementation of the approved projects
Through the approval of detailed business case submissions by the Governance Board, manage
the roll out and execution of the project – reaching the ‘Time Served’ technician community
across the employer sector. This will include the segmentation of both the offer and the
approach to employers and technicians in businesses from SMEs to large corporations.
Working with the Business Programme Leader, optimise recruitment collateral, ensuring inmarket
learnings are applied to the project proposition, seeking to improve relevance and
effectiveness of all project outputs in the recruitment of technicians.
Operational integration with joint PEIs
Control the budget associated with the ‘Time Served’ project, creating project submissions,
quarterly forecasts and reconciliation to support the Business Programme Leader in the
financial management of the plan.
Ensure all potential applicants’ records are captured, tracked and forwarded to the correct PEI
for election, with an appropriate process for reporting successful elections back to the initiating
project for monitoring purposes.
Control the timely and accurate recording of enabling relationships and contacts with key
decision makers or influencers associated with developing the projects, for example training
managers or college lecturers.
Be alert to potential media opportunities, working efficiently with the media functions of the
supporting PEIs, Engineering Council and Gatsby Foundation.
Since job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the post-holder may be required to undertake
other duties which are broadly in line with above key responsibilities.
The post-holder is expected to observe and comply with all policies and regulations, for
example Code of Conduct, Health and Safety, Data Protection, Equality and Diversity etc.
SUCCESS CRITERIA
The agreed implementation success criteria are reached and that the project continues to be
