The Art of Return
The prophet commands us
“Shuvu shuvu ami – Return,
return, my people!” But to what are
we returning
The month of Elul is eternally
committed to the belief that
anything that we can choose we
can change. We are not returning
to a place (synagogue.) We are returning to a path.
things different than they were” And “What have I done
to contribute to each of those changes” Fill those in.
Now make two more columns. If you could control it,
“How should each improve” And finally, “How would
the Torah change it”
Finally, make your “To Do” list towards those necessary
changes. A plan of action, and a life of enhanced purpose
and meaning, are sure to emerge.
God requires action, as well as belief. If it were impossible
to change our actions, God would be – heaven forefend
– cruel and even maniacal to require anything other
than our own personal sense of right and wrong. The
Conservative movement maintains that God has not only
made us capable of the most sweeping life changes, but
that God requires it of us in specific ways.
Teshuvah (returning) is the great theme of the Yamim
Nora’im (Days of Awe) which we observe from Rosh
HaShanah through Yom Kippur.
Yet the act of change is an art. It takes vision, planning,
and implementation.
Take a few moments, right now, and chart a list for
yourself on paper. On the left, perhaps you’ll list “Beth
Shalom, Family, Me” or other important areas of your life.
Now make two more columns. “How are each of those
You are now ready to come to Rosh HaShanah.
The prime message of the High Holy Days Machzor is to
return to our own lives in this manner, while listening to
God’s known voices of judgment, forgiveness and loving
expectations.
Change becomes progress. Yet to progress, we must first
return.
May you be inscribed for health, happiness and prosperity
in the year ahead.
e xe c u t i v e l y s p e a k i n g
During the spring process review, which involved
approximately 45 volunteers and staff members, all
synagogue procedures were analyzed to determine
how well our systems work. Many modifications were
proposed in the current budget, and some are now
being implemented. Our system for receiving charitable
donations is one area in which changes have been made.
Our standard procedure for accepting a donation involves
multiple steps: posting the check, crediting the correct
account, formatting the information for the Scroll, sending
a letter of acknowledgement to the donor, and notifying
the honoree. When the monthly statement is sent, the
same record of the donor’s gift is printed. In the situations
where multiple notifications are sent for the same gift, the
workload multiplies. It was decided several years ago that
donations of $10 or greater would be printed in the Scroll.
In order to promote efficiency in the administrative
office, we have changed the procedure. Beginning in July,
we stopped sending an immediate acknowledgement
to the donor, since that same information comes in the
monthly statement. We will send a monthly statement
if your account has any activity. If a non-member makes
a donation, we will still send a letter of appreciation.
Honorees will now receive a card which has been
redesigned by Linda Salvay to notify
them of a donation. When the new
website becomes fully launched,
we may find that notifications can
be sent by email if the family has
supplied their email address. At the
end of the calendar year, a written
letter of notification for payments to
the synagogue of $250 or greater will
be sent, consistent with federal law.
We are in the process of updating
our computer systems and business processes, as we utilize
technology to help save precious dollars. We value your
contributions at any level of giving. As with any change,
we realize there will be some initial confusion. We ask for
your support, understanding, and patience while we work
through the transition. As always, your thoughts and
suggestions are very much appreciated.
What to Expect in Religious School
Contrary to popular opinion, the summer is a very busy time for us in the
religious school. It is the behind the scenes work we do during the summer
months that makes the rest of the year run so smoothly.
So, what is it that you can expect this year in the school The religious school
is blessed with many returning teachers, which makes for a very stable faculty.
We are pleased to welcome Rabbi Stein, who will be teaching our 10 th grade
Confirmation class and will be available to work with the staff, particularly
in the area of text. Rabbi Tobin and Hazzan Menes will also be teaching our
Confirmation students and will have additional responsibilities in the school.
Three of our teachers, Debby Agron, Dayna Gershon and Jill Goldstein are
participating in a community wide program, the Teacher Education Initiative.
They have brought new ideas and teaching techniques to the entire faculty and
to their own classroom teaching. Watch for upcoming programs, particularly
in the area of mitzvah family projects coordinated by Debby Agron.
Annual High Holy Day Appeal
Has Begun
Once again our congregation is appealing to our
membership for extra funds to help support Beth
Shalom. Our combined dues cover approximately half
of our synagogue’s expenses. Our goal is to raise $85,000
to help support the excellent programs and services Beth
Shalom will provide throughout the coming year.
High Holy Day Appeal pledge cards for this year have
been mailed, and board members will soon call to ask
for your support. Levels of support range from $1
to $1800+. We are hoping for 100% participation.
Donations can be made by mailing in your pledge card,
speaking to a Board member on the phone, or indicating
your pledge amount on your High Holy Day ticket and
depositing it with an usher during Yom Kippur services.
Please contribute to the High Holy Day Appeal for
2009-10. Your donation makes a difference!
