Col Joel Roy takes his final salute
as commanding officer of 424
Squadron Thursday.
Tiger Squadron changes leaders
but not its stripes
By Ross Lees
As 8 Wing commander Colonel Sean
Friday presided over the 424 change of
command ceremony Thursday in which
Col Joel Roy passed the torch to LCol
Jean Bernier, he advised LCol Bernier
“to optimize without compromise in
safety and standards” in performing his
duties as CO of 424 Squadron.
In an emotional farewell to Tiger
Squadron, newly promoted Col Roy
thanked 8 Wing for its tremendous support
during the trying period late in 2011
when 424 Squadron lost one of its own
“We can’t thank you enough for rallying
behind us when we lost one of our
own,” LCol Roy noted.
Throughout the ceremony, a common
theme emerged as leaders recognized
the families of the members of the
squadron for their support.
“It makes a world of difference to
know things are in good hands at home,”
Col Roy noted as he mentioned his wife’s
support during his term as 424 Squadron
CO. “And I thank all Tiger families for
supporting us while we do what we do.”
Popular CO leaves 8 Wing Logistics
By Ross Lees
While Lieutenant-Colonel Sean
Lewis led the Wing Logistics and Engineering
(WLE) Branch through a
very busy 1,000 days, few would deny
he had fun at the same time.
As he passed command of the busy
branch to LCol Dany Breton on June
1, LCol Lewis and Col Sean Friday, 8
Wing Commander, both advised the
new CO to find time to have some fun
during his tenure.
In that regard, he’ll have huge
shoes to fill.
Col Friday opened his speech at
the Change of Command parade by
wondering where he would begin talk-
about his kilt-wearing escapades, much
400 Squadron memorial Cairn dedicated on 80 th anniversary
By Ross Lees
A memorial cairn to the 400 Squadron personnel who gave their
lives and those who continue to serve in the Royal Canadian Air
Force was dedicated at the air park of the National Air Force
Museum of Canada Saturday.
The Squadron’s Honorary Colonel, Major-General Brock
Horseman, thanked 400 Squadron’s Historical Society, especially
President of the Historical Society Gerry Gilroy, for their
dedication and perseverance in bringing the project to fruition..
HCol Horseman noted it was a fitting honour to dedicate
the memorial cairn in the 80th year of the senior RCAF squadron
and its predecessors, which was created on Oct. 5, 1932.
This storied squadron was originally known as 10 Army Cooperation
Squadron and was then redesignated 110 (City of
Toronto) (Army Co-Operation) Squadron in 1937 before becoming
400 Squadron on March 1, 1941, at the height of the
Second World War.
HCol Horseman said the squadron, heavily involved in recent
world events, are always ready to respond with equipment
and personnel when needed..
“We were heavily involved in Afghanistan and the Libyan
campaign has just ended, granting us some badly needed respite.
But you never know when we will be called again,” he said.
400 Squadron Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel
Todd Braithwaite said he was pleased to be in attendance on
this day with current and past
serving members to dedicate the
monument to those who gave
their lives and to the families
of those who gave the ultimate
sacrifice.
LCol Braithwaite thanked
the Squadron Historical Society
for their hard work and foresight
in bringing the ceremony
to fruition, adding he was im-
400 Squadron Historical Society President
Gerry Gilroy noted he had taken up the idea of
Col George Georges, a former president of the
society who came up with the original idea and
was granted permission to create the monument
in 1999. Unfortunately, Col Georges suffered
the loss of his wife, had a battle with cancer
- which he lost – in the next decade and was
never able to develop the monument further.
“This monument is to all who served,” he
noted, adding it had been a huge undertaking
as they endeavoured to get all the information
correct.
He joined HCol Horseman and LCol
Braithwaite in unveiling the Memorial Cairn
and 8 Wing Chaplain Major Tracy Graf noted
she hoped the monument would “…bring fresh
appreciation of our heritage” to all who viewed
it.
Riding to Remember through 8 Wing
Capt Steven Dieter
Even wet weather could not dampen the spirits of motorcyclists
from around the world as they descended on 8 Wing Trenton on
Saturday, June 2 to begin a journey along the Highway of Heroes
to Toronto. The Wing was host to close to 2,000 motorcycles,
and even more riders who joined together to remember Canadian
Forces personnel who have been repatriated.
“It’s a team of folks that make all of this happen,” noted
Colonel Sean Friday, 8 Wing Commander, as he addressed the
crowd. Noting the activity level here at the Wing, Col Friday
reflected that when needed, the Wing mobilized for a repatriation.
“One of the most significant duties that we have had here
at Trenton is to rally the citizens, the members of the base, to
make sure that when our fallen come home, they come home
with honour. It’s been a sacred duty that we’ve carried out with
pride.”
For Lou DeVuono, the organizer of the Heroes Highway
Ride, being able to start this year’s ride at 8 Wing was special.
Last year, the Ride travelled through the region, passing the
Wing. “In four short years, we’ve grown from 134 bikes our first
year to several thousand bikes. I think it’s thrilling to see all these
communities come together for the shared cause of showing support,
respect and gratitude to the men and women that serve our
country.” DeVuono also acknowledged the support of the volunteers
– which this year included American service personnel who
were at 8 Wing participating in a course at the Canadian Forces
Land Advanced Warfare Centre.
Grand Marshall Darlene Cushman spoke about the emotion
of the day and the pending journey. Her son, Trooper Darryl
Caswell of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, was killed in Afghanistan
when his Coyote armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive
device on June 11, 2007. “Today’s ride is really emotional
for me. Riding the Highway of Heroes touches my heart.” Mrs.
Cushman told the crowd of her visit to Afghanistan, and her
feelings afterwards. “When I came home, and I drove the Highway
of Heroes, I kept thinking of everyone still in Afghanistan,
and in my heart and in my eyes, they are all heroes.”
As he welcomed everyone to the area, Quinte West Mayor
John Williams thanked the Trenton Citizens Band and the 413
Wing Air Force Association of Canada Pipe Band for their performance
at the event, as well as thanking the Wing “for their
support to have the event here.” He picked up on the theme of
remembrance, announcing that the sod turning for the Afghanistan
Repatriation Memorial will occur later this month, and invited
everyone back for the dedication of the Memorial later this
year.
Col Friday noted that this event was a joint and combined
effort: joint because of the participation of 8 Wing and members
of the Canadian Army; and combined because of the cooperation
between the HHR, the City of Quinte West and the
Ontario Provincial Police. Of special note was the cooperative
effort between the OPP and the Military Police here in Trenton,
working together behind the scenes to coordinate all aspects of
the event, allowing for an enjoyable event for all. The OPP coordinated
safety along the entire Ride route.
The Canadian Army was represented by the Royal Canadian
Dragoons from Petawawa, who brought two Coyotes to
8 Wing to allow the public to see the kind of vehicle used in
Afghanistan connected with Trooper Caswell. As well, several
members of the RCDs appeared in their scarlet uniforms and
lined Buffalo Avenue where every motorcycle passed between
them and a Colour Guard provided by Royal Canadian Legion
Trenton Branch 110, as they left the Wing. The Heroes Highway
Ride proceeded along the Highway of Heroes to Toronto,
where a rally was held at the Sound Academy on Polson Pier in
Toronto.
8 Wing’s Flying Frogmen Scuba
Club cleans up Trent River
By Ross Lees
Over the 15 years the 8 Wing’s Flying Frogmen Scuba Club (FFSC) has been cleaning
up the Trent River at Trenton, they’ve seen the amount of material they pull out
each year diminish, but there is still a lot of work to do.
This year, they pulled out 15 shopping carts of stuff, including a scooter, a ski,
shoes, bottles and cans, tires, an old wall-style telephone, the gate from the dock at
the Wahoo Café, pipes and hubcaps.
As bizarre as some of that might seem, it’s not even close to the most bizarre. In
past years, the club has pulled out a wooden leg and even a gun from the River during
their annual cleanups.
Formed in 1958, the FFSC is the second oldest scuba club in Ontario and they
use the cleanup dive as the first dive of the year, one in which they also give their
young divers some experience.
The first year the club did the cleanup dive, they brought out two stake truck
loads of material, and that has gradually dwindle to one truck load or what they
recovered this year.
About 20 divers took part this year and, according to Lieutenant (Navy) Katherine
Woodburn, the location is good because it can be a quick dive for both inexperienced
and experienced divers.
In diving in the past, they had seen the garbage and decided it should be cleaned
up.
“We figured we might as well clean it up while we were there,” she told The
Contact.
There are currently about 40 members in what Warrant Officer Wade Dominie,
president, calls a very active club.
“We have a huge amount of extremely experienced divers,” he said. “We have
eight qualified instructors and 13 or 14 rescue divers plus a bunch of very young divers.
We’re mainly a military club, but we do have a small percentage of civilians.”
Both Dominie and Woodburn said this was just the club’s way of paying back
the community. They are helped in their dive each year by the owners of Price Chopper,
who supply the parking lot, bathroom facilities for the club members and they
often will also supply water to drink.
“They treat us very well,” Dominie stated, himself
having dived for seven years while Woodburn
has dived for about 20 years.
“The experience level is high and we
strive for safety,” Dominie noted.
The club often switches sides on the
river each year for their cleanup dive and
they even went to Campbellford one year to
dive and cleanup the Trent River there.
Grocery carts are regular finds, according
to Woodburn, along with things like
batteries, tackle boxes, tool boxes purses and
bicycles.
A group of bikers from across the United States
and Canada joined forces for a ground dedication
ceremony Thursday, May 31, at Bain Park for the
Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial, ironically being
construction directly off the Highway of Heroes.
Mayor of Quinte West John Williams stole
the show, however, when he announced the ground
breaking for the memorial would take place later
in June and that the monument would be completed
in October for Remembrance Day.
In describing the memorial to the large gathering
of bikers including the Jewish Motorcyclists
Alliance, the First Canadian Army Veterans, a
group of U.S. soldiers and Canadian Forces personnel
and many people preparing to ride in the
Heroes Highway Ride that weekend, Mayor Williams
said of the memorial, “It is meant to be an
area of reflection and for people to pay their respects.”
It was a message that resonated with all those
gathered for the ceremony, many of whom have at-
tended repatriation ceremonies in both countries.
Joyce Kaufman, who acted as emcee at the
event, said she was touched by the level of commitment
on the part of the Canadian and American
troops to work together when their help was
required around the world.
She said whenever she sees something going
on, she sees “…these two great countries, side by
side, standing up for the same principles of freedom
and the pursuit of happiness and liberty and
the ideals that not many other countries around
the world share, but we continue to fight for these
things and, of course, we are here together to pay
tribute to those who paid the last and the ultimate
price – their lives. No greater love has man than to
lay down his life for his brother. We honour many
of both Canadians and Americans who have paid
that price.”
Throughout the ceremony, several cheques
were donated towards the construction of the memorial,
with a final price tag of $1.5 million. Over
$600,000 has so far been raised in a national fundraising
campaign.
Tension relief through progressive muscle relaxation
Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a relaxation
technique used to release stress. It can
relax the muscles and lower blood pressure,
heart rate, and respiration. The exercise involves
tensing and then relaxing each muscle
group of the body, one group at a time.
Though this technique is simple it may take
several sessions before it is ‘mastered.’
a gift from the squadron.
continued from page 1
Col Sean Friday also tasked LCol Bernier to take care of the squadron families,
noting it was part of his leadership job. “Without our families, we don’t
deliver on our leadership missions,” Col Friday stated.
At the same time, it is a responsibility LCol Bernier showed he was well
aware of and more than willing to shoulder. He spoke of how his children had
two parents in the military and the many challenges that caused them with extended
deployments.
“We all know how challenging military life can be,” he said to his children,
adding, “Your family has just grown by about 200 Tigers.”
In thanking Col Roy for his two years of leadership with 424 Squadron, Col
Friday talked about his achievements, noting, “The squadron has saved hundreds
of lives, saved Canadians in distress. Is there any better work we could be doing?”
Col Friday said he was especially proud of 424 Squadron and 8 Wing personnel
during the time immediately after the death of Sgt Gilbert. He said at that
time the Squadron and Wing personnel showed the compassion and resilience
they have become famous for.
“I was especially proud of our team during that time,” he said. “You wrapped
your arms around our family, you took care of them and then, within two days,
you carried on with your mission.”
LCol Bernier said he was happy and proud to accept the mantel of leadership
for 424 Squadron.
“You are always ready to answer the calls of need, to serve Canadians, to
protect them and to save them from the most dire conditions they might get
And he said he was proud to be back in this hangar where he started his SAR
career 15 years before.
“I’m thrilled to return here as your new leader,” and he encouraged them to
keep “excelling at what we do that others may live.”
LCol Bernier joined the Canadian Forces in 1987 in Rimouski, Quebec.
After completing a Space Sciences degree at le Collège Militaire Royal de St-
Jean, Quebec, he obtained his Air Navigator wings from the CF Air Navigation
School in Winnipeg and was posted to 429 Squadron in Trenton.
His next posting was with 424 Squadron where he specialized in Search and
Rescue. In 1999, he was posted to 413 Squadron in Greenwood, Nova Scotia and
flew more Search and Rescue. He returned to Trenton in 2002 to a brief staff
position with 426 Squadron until joining the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre,
Trenton.
Promoted to Major in 2006, he was posted to Winnipeg to join 435 Squadron
until he deployed to Kandahar airfield, Afghanistan in 2008. Upon his return, he
assumed command of the Canadian Forces School of Survival and Aeromedical
Training until 2010.
After completing the Joint Command and Staff Programme of the Canadian
10 - The Contact News
June 8, 2012
continued from page 1
sincere thanks for LCol Lewis’ outstanding efforts while
leading the WLE Branch.
“You have truly been a leader, giving a clear vision
of the future, enabling your teams to achieve excellence
and celebrating them as they achieved extraordinary successes,
such as the Mission Support Element assuming
its high readiness posture well in advance of the original
plan and such as the many new infrastructure success
including the somewhat large one we’re all gathered in
today,” Col Friday noted.
Col Friday said LCol Lewis invested in the surrounding
communities, his leadership ensured a model level of
cooperation and collaboration between the base leadership
and their union
partners, and he
ensured top-notch
support of Canadian
Forces Station (CFS)
Alert while facing
infrastructure issues
head-on. “Most importantly,
you took
the time to really
take care of people
and families, embracing
at all times
and bringing life to
the words ‘Mission
First, People Always.’
It has been a
real pleasure working
along side you.
You have provided
me sound council as
a branch head and
infused the whole
Wing with a unique
and truly inspirational esprit de corps.”
“Over the past 1,000 days, members of 8 Wing Logistics
and Engineering represented by the soldiers, sailors,
airmen and women, and of course our civilians on
parade today, drove and maintained thousands of vehicles
and equipment, answered 25,000 IT trouble tickets
a year, prepared 1,000 meals a day, and maintained approximately
$1 billion worth of buildings and works –
all in a safe and environmentally compliant way,” LCol
Lewis noted.
“While making everything work on the largest base
in the Air Force is in itself a huge undertaking, in 2009
the unit was assigned and has successfully embraced the
additional duty of the support lifeline to CFS Alert way
up at the apex of our country on Ellesmere Island, strategically
situated some 800 km from the North Pole. The
Station has the honour of being the world’s most northerly
permanently manned outpost, accessible only by air
where the inhabitants proudly call themselves the Frozen
Chosen.”
LCol Lewis praised his logistics unit for their outstanding
performances on Jacmel airfield in earthquake
ravaged Haiti, their work in closing down Camp Mirage
and the Air Wing in Afghanistan, all while dealing with
an $860 million construction boom on the base.
“Literally, the face of CFB Trenton changes day-byday
as old is replaced by new,” he stated.
Even as he was saying goodbye, he thought to mention
his strong right arm, Master Warrant Officer Tom
Fielding.
“I could not have imagined a better partner to share
the command team duties with,” he said. “Thanks for doing
your best to make sure I was on time, observing the
right military protocols of which you were only moderately
successful (my fault, not yours) and most of all,
thanks for being a sounding board, offering sound advice
and giving me the consolidated perspective of all our
great NCMs in the branch.”
He also thanked his wife Deana for her support
through those 1,000 days and nights.
“Deana has steadfastly supported me through late
nights, missed suppers and anniversaries, and blackberries
taken on vacation so emails could be secretly answered.
Thanks for everything you have done in supporting me. I
know I am still far from being nominated husband of the
year,” he acknowledged.
For his friend and successor, LCol Lewis had three
pieces of advice.
“Blame me for anything that goes wrong in the next
six months, but after that you’re on your own; take a day
or two out of your 1,000 days to have fun and appreciate
the great people you have around you; and give the folks
in the Branch their vector and look after them and they
will make mission success magic all day long,” he said.
LCol Dany Breton said they were in the perfect venue
for this change of command, noting he was proud to
join the logistics team to face the many challenges ahead.
He promised to do little talking while doing his best to
lead this outstanding team.
Col Friday said
“You have truly been a leader,
giving a clear vision of the future,
enabling your teams to achieve
excellence and celebrating them as
they achieved extraordinary successes,
such as the Mission Support Element
assuming its high readiness posture well
in advance of the original plan and such
as the many new infrastructure success
including the somewhat large one we’re
all gathered in today.
he had every confidence
in the man replacing
LCol Lewis.
“The years ahead
will be filled with
challenges, on-going
construction, balancing
and optimizing
scarce resources,
enabling operations
at home and abroad,
but I have no doubt
you will meet these
challenges head-on
and, with the support
of your teams,
you will succeed,”
Col Friday stated.
“It is a special
trust and responsibility
that is invested
in you as you take up
the leadership man-
tel. But you have the experience, knowledge, skills and
leadership abilities to excel. You have my every confidence,”
LCol Friday said.
LCol Breton is a native of Chicoutimi, Quebec. Immediately
upon completing high school in 1987, he attended
the Royal Military Colleges in St-Jean, QC and
Kingston, ON.
Following military occupation training as a Military
Engineer at CFB Chilliwack, LCol Breton was posted
to the Construction Engineering Squadron in 3 Wing,
Bagotville in 1993. While there, he was heavily involved
in the provision of engineer support to Op SAGUENAY,
John Cairns motivates from experience
By Ross Lees
If you can’t get motivated by Belleville’s
John Cairns, you may have already quit
breathing.
Mr. Cairns had his life changed forever
on Nov. 30, 1992, when as a railway
worker, he was run over by 68 tons
of railway car, severing his right leg and
arm. Surviving the experience because
he was so close to quality emergency
care and a good hospital, this young man
went through all the normal feelings of
going from a life of independence to a
state of total dependence, an abyss of
helplessness and hopelessness.
From the depths of despair, this
young man – who was told he would
never walk again without assistance –
continues to astonish all who see him.
He does walk without assistance, his
eyes sparkle when he meets a new person
and he jokes about his accident and his
present condition.
While talking about his life-altering
accident to a volunteer appreciation night
audience May 31, he draws a somewhat
tentative laugh when he tells them he
goes downhill skiing for half price now.
Face to Face
& Confidential
He knows more arm and leg jokes than
you can shake a wooden leg at and he
doesn’t hesitate to work them into his
motivational presentations wherever he
speaks.
He tells of hitting a wall during his
occupational therapy following the accident,
but how he sprang out of the
depths of despair.
“In spite of my suffering, I began
to sense that there was a higher reason
behind this tragedy,” he notes. “I slowly
became aware that I had the power to
choose my course of action despite the
grim circumstances. That internal awareness
led me to positive thinking and
in turn to possibility thinking. Positive
thinking sets the attitude. Possibility
thinking puts the legs under a positive
attitude…and boy, did I need the legs!”
And he has used those legs ever
since.
He says he discovered the importance
of adopting a winning attitude and
he’s never looked back.
“I aspire to inspire,” he states, adding
he now lives by choices, not chances.
And it was his choice to be at the
Financial Problems?
Astra Lounge that night to speak to a
room full of volunteers, what he calls a
“…room full of difference makers.”
Several other prominent people in
that room couldn’t have agreed more.
8 Wing Commander Colonel Sean
Friday took time to address the gathering,
held to honour volunteers. “It’s important
to take the time to say thanks to
our volunteers,” he said, noting it takes
a village to raise a child and everybody
working together to make a community.
He added much of what takes place in
the military family community “…is only
possible because of the dedicated people
and volunteers in this room. Thank you
for all that you do.”
Judy Christopherson of the Recreation
Association concurred, noting the
recreation association couldn’t operate
without volunteers.
“Seventy per cent of what we do is
through the participation of volunteers,”
she said. “Without you, we wouldn’t be
able to offer many of our programs. I’m
always amazed at the time and effort
people are willing to put forth.”
Wendy Synnott enjoys one of John Cairns’
many jokes as he helps draw tickets for door
prizes at the event in this photo.
Family Resource Centre (MFRC) added
there was no aspect of the MFRC that
could function without volunteers. She
said the MFRC had just finished its
largest fundraiser ever, almost doubling
the funds raised.
“It was 100 per cent because of our
amazing Invisible Ribbon Campaign
committee and the volunteers involved
with it. You are wonderful and you motivate
the staff, too,” she said.
That synergy between volunteers
and community tasks required by community
groups is something Cairns loves
to see and be a part of. It is part of the
change which occurred in his life as he
struggled back from that crushing life
blow in 1992.
When asked about how much his life
had changed since that accident, Cairns
said it’s the difference between a 40 watt
light bulb and a 100 watt light bulb.
“I enjoyed my life before, but I just
didn’t get it,” he told The Contact. “It
would probably take another train for
me to have a bad day now.”
If that’s not motivation, most of us
probably will never figure out what is.
arctic hair serves CFS alert and Soldier On
By Lt Heesub Chung
Most people in Canada would not have a hard time looking for a barber shop or salon
to get a haircut. However, it can be quite challenging to get a haircut for those who
live in the remote locations, including those at the CF’s most northerly post, CFS
Alert.
Fortunately, CFS Alert has Corporal Trevor Hill, who not only is a firefighter but
has also become the station barber. Cpl Hill started his tour in Alert on Dec.1, 2011
and assumed the role of station barber responsibilities during his second week quite
accidentally, when he agreed to cut another firefighter’s hair. Next thing he knew, he
fell into the role of station barber, learning his craft as he went and decided to name
his barbershop “Arctic Hair,” playing off all the arctic “hares” that are commonly seen
You might ask, “Does Cpl Hill make any profit running his barbershop?” The
answer is no, he works for donations and all funds raised are being donated to a cause
near and dear to him, the Soldier On program.
Cpl Hill’s dedication to this organization has been motivated by injured friends
Cpl Trevor Hill, a CFS Alert Fire Fighter and volunteer station barber, raised $1,000 cutting hair during his tour, which he donated to the Soldier On fund.
who have benefited greatly by the Soldier On program. Prior to becoming a firefighter,
Cpl Hill served 12 years as an infantryman with 1RCR, serving in a variety of deployments
during this time, and he has remained close with many of his 1RCR comrades.
He personally helped raise funds for the St John Rehab Centre, in support of his friend
Jody Mitic, who lost both his legs in Afghanistan, and Major Jay Feyko, another friend
of Cpl Hill’s, who was wounded in Afghanistan losing most of his sight in one eye.
Knowing how valuable the Soldier On program is, and how every bit helps, Cpl
Hill hoped to raise $750 during his tour at CFS Alert.
“It just seemed like another way for me to help my brothers by donating the
money I make to such an amazing organization,” Cpl Hill stated.
He has already exceeded his goal, having raised $1,000.
The Solider On program was co-founded in 2006 by WO Andrew McLean, who
served in 1RCR with Cpl Hill, and Greg Lagace, to support ill and injured military
personnel with a permanent or chronic disability, for both serving and retired service
personnel. The program also supports their families to attain an active and healthy lifestyle.
Cut for Cure final total is $9,064.34
In our original story about the Cut for the Cure in our May 18 issue of The Contact, we announced the total funds raised as
$8,723. We have since been advised by Sue Rollins, Fundraising Coordinator for the Hastings and Prince Edward County
Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society that that total has since increased to a “spectacular $9,046.34. Once again, an incredible
job done by Dan Gorman,” Rollins wrote. In the above picture, LCol Dan Harris raises another $100 at the original
Cut for the Cure event when LCol Darwin Ziprick pays that amount to get the first cut.
enSS students walk in aboriginal moccasins for a day
The East Northumberland Secondary School Native Studies
class had the pleasure and the privilege of attending the
annual Aboriginal Awareness Day festivities, located at CFB
Trenton, on May 23. Students participated in several traditional
Native activities, such as workshops in dancing and
creating First Nations crafts. In addition, attendees were
given the chance to participate in a smudging ceremony, as
well as engage in teachings on medicinal plants and drum
making.
ENSS student, and member of the Native Studies class,
Megan Smylie commented on her experience at Aboriginal
Awareness Day: “It was very enjoyable. We were given the
opportunity to learn even more about the Aboriginal way
of life by actually being able to participate in events that
would have taken place in the life of an indigenous person.
week OF June 3 TO June 9, 2012
The luckiesT signs This week: Aries, TAurus, And Gemini
ARIES
Big projects are on the horizon, both professionally and personally. If you’re about to retire, you might decide to
undertake some new ventures.
TAURUS
A romantic trip will revive the passion in your relationship. An amazing event will give you the opportunity
to step into the spotlight.
GEMINI
If you’re thinking about moving, you will likely undertake an extensive redecoration project. You can count on
your friends to help, so don’t forget to invite them!
CANCER
You’ll need to weigh the pros and cons of a very specific situation. You’ll succeed in obtaining all the necessary
information to make an enlightened choice.
LEO
You’ll have quite a lot of work this week, as well as some small details that will need very precise finishing touches.
You’ll probably make some new friends whose lifestyles seem very stimulating.
VIRGO
You’ll be the centre of attention, even though you are usually a rather reserved person. It will nevertheless be
very good for your self-esteem.
LIBRA
There will be a rather complex family situation to manage this week. It will definitely take all your gentleness to
solve it in a harmonious manner.
SCORPIO
You might have a few disagreements with your work colleagues. This will actually be useful, as it will help you
to dispel bad feelings and return the situation to normal.
SAGITTARIUS
You’re not always the most reasonable of people, but it’s definitely what makes your charm. When you go
shopping, you often succeed in uncovering some real treasures.
CAPRICORN
This is going to be a busy week for you and it is with a winner’s conviction that you ll confront the world. Your sense
of initiative is increasing tenfold at the moment.
AQUARIUS
Perhaps you will be able to restore your vitality by changing your diet slightly and discarding some bad habits. A
new phase in your life awaits you.
PISCES
You might meet some people who will teach you a new philosophy. You could soon embark on some projects of
a very spiritual nature.
It opened our eyes to their practices, and we put ourselves in
their shoes for a day.”
Native Studies students at ENSS have been learning a
great deal about native culture over the course of the semester,
actively being a part of teachings on natural elements
such as water, and the coming of spring in the aboriginal
world view. They have even taken their learning and shared it
with younger students in the community, and this will continue
through the rest of the semester, as they prepare to give
teachings to Grade 8 students at Brighton Public School.
Their trip to CFB Trenton for the event was certainly
the high point in their learning, adding to their experiential
base. As every learner knows, there is no substitute for experience,
and experience is exactly what was gained at this
year’s Aboriginal Awareness Day.
Programme pré scolaire
francophone
Le CRFM a été approché par
le Réseau régional francophone
afin d’offrir un programme
préscolaire en langue française
à notre garderie agréée. Malgré
que nous offrons déjà des services
bilingues, présentement il
n’y a aucun service en français
dans la région de Hastings. Dès
le mois de septembre 2012,
nous aurons 8 places de disponibles
pour ce programme
Plan No: 7-3-931 For more floor plans, visit www.jenish.com
A touch of country charm lends this two-storey, three-bedroom
home — designed with family life in mind — instant curb
appeal.
Beyond the covered entry is a generous foyer with a built-in
bench and a planter set above the coat closet. To the right is a
den with a 16-foot ceiling, featuring a window seat. Just beyond
a half-wall and archway is the formal dining room, with french
doors opening on to the L-shaped veranda. A door offers access
to the kitchen for easy serving.
The open-plan great room flows into the kitchen and breakfast
nook. The great room’s corner fireplace will make it a cosy
focal point for family activities during the cooler months. Adding
drama to the great room is a partial double-height ceiling.
The bayed-out breakfast nook, with a window seat, overlooks a
terrace.
The kitchen features a U-shaped counter configuration for
PATIO DOORS • ENTRY DOORS
maximum efficiency, as well as a prep island and a pantry. Off the
kitchen is a covered outdoor area, perfect for year-round grilling.
The master suite also boasts a window seat. The roomy
walk-in closet is accessed through the en suite, which features
both a corner shower stall and a soaker tub.
Also on the main floor are a storage cupboard, powder
room and laundry room, with a built-in bench and a coat cupboard
for off-season gear. A door leads to the double garage, big
enough for a work bench.
Up the L-shaped staircase are the second and third bedrooms,
separated by a three-piece bath with a linen cupboard.
The third bedroom boasts a walk-in closet.
Exterior finishes include board-and-batten siding and wood
shingles, as well as painted trim and stone-based pilasters.
This 2,361 square foot home, which includes an unfinished
basement, measures 48 feet wide, and 58 feet, six inches deep.
Work behind the wheel can hurt your back
Sitting all day in a cab, reaching and wrenching to operate the steering
wheel and gears - a transportation job can give your back a real
pounding.
Vibration from the vehicle and from rough road surfaces, uncomfortable
or ergonomically incorrect sitting posture and exertion
in lifting cargo can all add up to cumulative back injuries. There is
also the possibility of traumatic back injury around vehicles from
collisions and from falls.
Here are some ways to keep your back strong, healthy and safe:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Maintain good posture while operating a vehicle. Adjust the
seat so you can sit up relatively straight in a comfortable, relaxed
position, without having the spine too straight or too curved.
Your back should retain its natural “S” shape whether you are
sitting, standing or lying down. If the driver’s seat does not allow
good posture, see about having it refitted. The seat height
should keep your knees level with your hips.
Maintaining your general good health can help prevent back
injuries, so get enough sleep and rest, eat right and exercise
regularly.
Take frequent breaks to stretch, relax and exercise your back
muscles.
Climb out of the cab slowly after a long period of sitting.
Keep your muscles strong and toned. Strengthening the muscles
in your back and abdomen is especially important.
Hold your weight at a normal level by eating a low-fat, high-
nutrient diet.
Use the strength in your arms and legs – not your back – to
operate the vehicle controls.
• Be careful about reaching across the seat to pick up items because
of the danger of back injury. Even in an automobile, it is
often preferable to walk around to the passenger door to get an
item from the passenger seat.
• Investigate the possibility of special padded seating and other
protection from excessive vehicle vibration.
• Make sure equipment is maintained in good shape to minimize
vibration.
If you must lift items, do so correctly. Bend your knees and
crouch down close to the item before picking it up. Do not twist
your body as you carry or set down the item.
Better yet, use a handcart or other materials handling equipment
to lift and carry items.
Do not jump down from cabs, loading docks or tailgates. Instead,
take the stairs or the ladder provided. Wear non-slip footwear
and watch for ice, mud and grease on walking and climbing surfaces.
Use the required fall protection equipment when working at
heights around trucks, rail cars and other vehicles. Hook up the
equipment correctly, and maintain it properly.
Wear your seatbelt at all times in moving vehicles to protect you
from serious injury in case of a motor vehicle accident.
Back injuries have many causes - poor posture, overweight, incorrect
lifting techniques, cumulative injuries, falls and vehicle accidents
- or a combination of these factors. Protect your back from
injury when you are working and when you are off the job too.
