Statement from the AKC regarding
REGISTRATION, TRANSFER, AND
CO-OWNERSHIP RESTRUCTURED
FEES
The AKC Board of Directors voted unanimously at its
October 2011 meeting to restructure the individual dog
registration and co-ownership fees. This new fee structure
will allow AKC to continue its good works for all
dogs, including canine health research donations,
search-and-rescue dog grants, lost dog recovery, kennel
inspections, monitoring canine legislation, and promoting
responsible dog ownership among other programs.
AKC can also continue to provide the same level of
quality vital services to clubs, exhibitors and breeders.
This is the first registration fee increase since 2007 despite
the continuing economic challenges facing the
country and as a result the sport of purebred dogs.
As of January 1, 2012, the first-time individual dog
registration fee and each basic transfer of ownership
fee will increase to $30 per dog. This new fee structure
also includes modifications to co-ownership. With the
first-time individual dog registration as well as any
subsequent transfer of dog ownership, one (1) primary
owner will be listed with the $30 registration or transfer
fee. In addition, a $10 fee will be added for each
additional owner listed on the registration certificate.*
The primary owner will receive the official AKC Registration
Certificate and each additional owner will receive
an e-mail only copy of the registration certificate.
The e-mail copy will be clearly marked COPY, will not
display the certificate issue date, and will not have the
transfer form on the back.
Owners of AKC Registered Dogs will still receive the
same benefits as before including: AKC Registration
Certificate, Complimentary Trial Pet Health Care Insurance,
Eligibility to Participate in AKC Events, New
Puppy Handbook, and Optional discounted Registration
Packages. As the nation’s only not-for-profit registry,
we look forward to the continued support of dog
owners through registration with the American Kennel
Club. Together we will overcome the current challenges
of the economy and continue our good works on
behalf of all dogs.
*Co-owners of dams registering litter members to the
litter owners will be exempt from this additional fee.
New In-Office Titer Test for Dogs:
Test Before Revaccinating
Jan Rasmusen, author of Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on
Dog Care, posted the following on her website,
www.Dogs4Dogs.com, on 11 Aug 2011 01:47 PM PDT:
Blood antibody titer testing (a simple blood test) is the
best way to determine if an animal or human has received
immunity from vaccination. (Just giving a vaccine
proves only that you’ve given it, not that it
worked.)
Testing your pup after her ”puppy shots” tells you if
immunity was achieved, potentially eliminating unnecessary
revaccination. (Remember, every vaccine brings
with it the potential for adverse reactions, ranging from
a fever to even death.) Testing a new adult dog, or a
dog with unknown vaccination history, helps determine
if further vaccination is necessary and tells you which
vaccines, if any, to give. In the US, most experts recommend
testing for parvovirus and distemper. Most
other vaccines are either unnecessary in many areas or
don’t confer immunity long enough to bother testing. At
this time, titer testing is NOT a legal substitute for rabies
vaccination.
If your vet doesn’t test titers as a routine matter before
revaccinating, or if the cost is prohibitive, I hope you’ll
tell your vet about a new inexpensive, quick in-office
test. I am writing about it for information purposes
only hoping it will help promote titer testing before
routine revaccination. I do not profit financially from
this new test. — Jan
To learn more about testing titers, including how often
to test and why it is often safer and less expensive than
revaccinating, read my article about titer testing
(www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/2008/10/22/titer-test). Upcoming
is a short article sent to me by Biogal, the
maker of the new test, the Canine VacciCheck.
Test kits are
available for
dogs, cats and
birds.
Titer Testing Can Assist in Avoiding Core
Vaccine Over Vaccination
Although most veterinarians agree vaccines are necessary
to prevent serious canine and feline infectious diseases,
the frequency in which pets are vaccinated is debated.
Why does this matter Although vaccines are largely
safe for healthy animals, adverse reactions, both minor
and serious, do occur. This is particularly bad when
vaccines were given unnecessarily because the animal
didn’t need the vaccine in the first place.
It is known that dogs, after vaccination, often maintain
protective antibody to the important core diseases Canine
Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Distemper for three or
more years. Blood studies have shown immunity for
seven years or more. But how do we know that the antibody
levels of our pets through vaccination are adequate
Titer Testing to Determine Duration of Immunity
(DOI)
Duration of immunity refers to the length of time an
animal is able to resist disease. Blood antibody tests
can be used to demonstrate the DOI after vaccination
for many vaccines, including all the core vaccines.
When antibodies are present there should be no need to
revaccinate the dog or cat for the specific disease tested.
If antibody titer is absent, some vets believe a previously
vaccinated dog should be revaccinated unless
there is a medical basis for not so doing so. Studies
have shown, however, that a dog that has had it’s
“puppy shots” is likely immune for many years, even
for life.
Previously, a significant drawback in performing antibody
tests was the cost and the time to obtain results, as
it required sending blood or serum to a lab. Consequently,
many pets were unnecessarily needlessly vaccinated
in the interest of time and money. . Times have
changed.
A Concept Change in Titer Testing
The Canine VacciCheck is a rapid, simple, reliable and
cost-effective antibody test useful in determining if a
dog requires additional vaccination. It can also help de-
termine the vaccination status of a dog with unknown
vaccination history or help determine if puppies or kittens
have developed immunity from vaccination.
What is also unique about the VacciCheck is that it s
test provides a simultaneous result developed for all
three core vaccines per test, and results are received
within 20 minutes. Veterinary clinics and, shelters and
therefore have a quick and simple in-office test that can
be performed at a reasonable cost to the pet owner.
In the past, even though there was an intention by many
pet owners and /or veterinarians to carry out titer testing
for core vaccines as opposed to instead of automatically
revaccinating, the price of a titer test when compared to
a vaccination was often prohibitive. Therefore, as a result,
with the price factor lessened via the use of the
VacciCheck, veterinarians can send ‘annual health
check’ reminders instead of vaccination reminder cards
for vaccines.
The ‘annual health check’ moves the emphasis from,
and client expectation of, annual revaccination, thus
saving the client money and eliminating adverse reactions
from unnecessary vaccination.
Dr. Ron Schultz wrote about this product
FDA Continues to Caution Dog Owners
About Chicken Jerky Products
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again
cautioning consumers that chicken jerky products for
dogs (also sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats)
may be associated with illness in dogs. In the last 12
months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of
complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with
consumption of chicken jerky products imported from
China. These complaints have been reported to FDA
by dog owners and veterinarians.
FDA issued a cautionary warning regarding chicken
Page 5
WAGGS Deadline: the first Monday of each month
jerky products to consumers in September 2007 and a
Preliminary Animal Health Notification in December
of 2008. After seeing the number of complaints received
drop off during the latter part of 2009 and most
of 2010, the FDA is once again seeing the number of
complaints rise to the levels of concern that prompted
release of our earlier warnings.
Chicken jerky products should not be substituted for a
balanced diet and are intended to be fed occasionally
in small quantities.
FDA is advising consumers who choose to feed their
dogs chicken jerky products to watch their dogs
closely for any or all of the following signs that may
occur within hours to days of feeding the products:
decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea,
sometimes with blood; increased water consumption
and/or increased urination. If the dog shows
any of these signs, stop feeding the chicken jerky
product. Owners should consult their veterinarian if
signs are severe or persist for more than 24 hours.
Blood tests may indicate kidney failure (increased
urea nitrogen and creatinine). Urine tests may indicate
Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). Although most
dogs appear to recover, some reports to the FDA have
involved dogs that have died.
FDA, in addition to several animal health diagnostic
laboratories in the U.S., is working to determine why
these products are associated with illness in dogs.
FDA’s Veterinary Laboratory Response Network
(VLRN) is now available to support these animal
health diagnostic laboratories. To date, scientists have
not been able to determine a definitive cause for the
reported illnesses. FDA continues extensive chemical
and microbial testing but has not identified a contaminant.
The FDA continues to actively investigate the problem
and its origin. Many of the illnesses reported may be
the result of causes other than eating chicken jerky.
Veterinarians and consumers alike should report cases
of animal illness associated with pet foods to the FDA
Consumer Complaint Coordinator in their state or go
to http://www.fda.gov/petfoodcomplaints.
For our Fall vacation this year we decided to go to Maine.
Since Cooper only needed 2 points and a competition win
to complete his UKC Championship I looked for a show
in Maine or along the way. I found one in Andover, Connecticut!
Four shows in two days – we hopefully would
be able to finish. The show grounds were on a working
farm. Need I say more After 4 days of rain no less.
Guess where Cooper’s nose was No competition the
first day but we still did fair. Next day competition we
got points and competition win in show one, pulled in
short list in group (but he did puppy stuff) so didn’t place,
judge really wanted to put him up but just couldn’t. But
More brags from Maggie & Darren Eslinger:
1st Place in Open B, few more OTCh points Rival’s
MarCar Vhari, UD, GN, GO, VER, RN (Border Collie)
earned a 1st in Open B out of seven dogs competing
(194.5) Boy the sit stay was evidently very tough for
dogs that day - they dropped like flies! And there was NO
HC awarded Saturday either! Vhari also earned a Rally
Advanced B Leg with a 95 (her mother blew 3 points for
her re-doing a station she thought they entered incorrectly
but didn’t! LOL!). Lizzie did her best but didn’t quite
make it into the Q zone!
AND Good News from the Greater Ocala Trials Nov. 17
-20, 2011:
Lizzie finished her UD in three straight trials (after failing
7 trials!) and was first place each day because no one
else could qualify! Scores were 185, 190, 182. Whew!
Glad that is done!
he finished his Championship!! So when he got beat in
show 2 by a very nice rookie dog and handler at their first
show I did not mind. It was funny in that the man kept
apologizing to me as I had loaned him the proper collar
and leash and gave him handling tips etc. and convinced
him to stay by telling him you never know what will happen
in dog shows. I was so proud and happy for him. Of
course, it did not hurt as I had accomplished my goal already.
. . .
The weekend of my Mom’s 100th Birthday party we
made our debut in ODTC’s obedience trials both days in
Beginner Novice. To our great delight we Q’d both
days with a 193 & a 192! So far we are having a really
good year and Cooper’s breeder is very proud of us.
However, we could not have done it without the help and
support of all our dog buddies and instructors (you know
who you are) a million thanks!!!!!
Warmest Puppy Hugs
Vhari moved up to Rally Ex B and passed the three days
we were able to show (missed one day due to conflicts)
and earned her RE title with a 4th, 3rd & 1st Place
though I don’t recall the scores even though I wrote them
down somewhere! Vhari earned two UDX legs in four
days, Q’d three out of four days in Utility B and Q’d three
out of four days in Open B. She came home with another
one of her OTCh requirements - a needed Utility B 1st
Place (and two more OTCh points), one 2nd Place, two
3rd Place & one 4th Place ribbons out of the B classes.
She also won High Combined one day and gathered a
few more OTCh points from the placements. Vhari
worked in three classes a day except for one missed class
and Lizzie in one a day so it was very busy but very fun.
Thanks to everyone who helps with run-throughs & practice!
Thanks to ODTC for a great training facility.
Shirley Conley and smooth collie, Blade, (Ceilidh's
Forged at Deep River) finished their CDX at the Greater
Ocala trials in November, with 2 first placements.
In an effort to help in the training of Judges, demonstrate
new classes and highlight changes to the AKC's Obedience
Regulations, as well as provide an introduction to
the sport of Obedience to individuals outside of the AKC,
the AKC's Companion Events Field Staff recently produced
a 5-minute demonstration video of the very popular
Beginner Novice Class.
Check it out at the following link:
Sunny's Shilo at Five Oaks (Smooth Collie) and Robin
earned their second leg in Novice A at Hernando County
Obedience Trial. Score was a very respectable 193 getting
us our first First Place Ribbon. Thanks to ODTC for
a great training program!!
Robin Hammel
The video shows how the class should be run with basic
information on the exercises (it does not to go through
the Regulations for the Class).
