Rationale
Churchlands SHS has investigated a model where students will be issued with a school owned device, for the
students own educational use at school and at home. We believe this model will provide the best resources for a
student to maximise their learning potential. We are able to utilise this model with support from the Federal
Government’s Digital Education Revolution and school resources. We expect students will utilise all ICT
resources in a responsible and sensible manner at all times.
This Laptop Loan Agreement must be signed by both the student and parent /carer and be recorded on the
school’s Administration database before the laptop will be issued. This agreement may be subject to change, the
latest version will be posted on the school website.
Students and parents/carers must carefully read this agreement and the school’s Acceptable Use Policy prior to
signing it. Any questions should be addressed to the school and clarification obtained before the agreement is
signed. This agreement is to be used in conjunction with the Department of Education Students Online Use
policy and the school’s Acceptable Use policy.
The laptop will be limited to allow only the issued user to logon and students will not have administrative rights.
1. Purpose
The laptop is to be provided as an educational tool to assist student learning both at school and at home.
2. Equipment
2.1 Ownership
2.1.1 The school retains ownership of the laptop at all times.
2.1.2 All material on the laptop is subject to review by school staff. If there is a request, by staff or
police, Churchlands SHS will provide access to the laptop and personal network holdings
associated with the use of your laptop.
2.1.3 Software installed on the laptop remains the property of the school and is not transferable.
2.1.4 The laptop and associated peripherals must be returned to the school in good working order, if
the student leaves the school. Failure to return the laptop will result in the filing of a Police report
for theft.
2.1.5 Any additional equipment required (eg additional power supply, backup drive) will be paid for by
the parent /care giver.
2.1.6 Parent must seek approval from the relevant Associate Principal before taking the laptop
interstate or overseas
Damage or loss of equipment
2.2.1 All laptops are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty. The warranty covers manufacturer’s
defects and normal use of the laptop. It does not cover accidental, negligence, abuse or
malicious damage. Before any claim is made against warranty, school staff will reimage the
laptop to rule out software corruption. Any costs associated with the repair not covered by
insurance or warranty will be paid for by the parent /carer.
2.2.2 Any problems, vandalism, damage, loss or theft of the laptop must be reported immediately to
the school.
2.2.3 In the case of suspected theft a police report must be made by the family and an incident
number provided to the school.
2.2.4 In the case of loss or accidental damage a witnessed statutory declaration signed by a
parent/carer must be provided.
2.2.5 Laptops that are damaged or lost by neglect, abuse or malicious act, will require reimbursement.
The Principal will determine whether replacement is appropriate and/or whether or not the
student is responsible for repair or replacement costs and whether or not the student retains
access to a laptop for home use.
2.2.6 Students will be required to replace lost or damaged chargers.
2.2 Substitution of equipment
2.3.1 When a laptop is replaced, it is replaced with one of similar age (if possible).
2.3.2 Where a battery has been assessed as unusable it will be replaced by the school.
3. Standards for laptop Use
The student is responsible for:
3.1 Bringing the laptop fully charged to school every day. Chargers should be left at home.
3.2 Ensuring they have a school locker and use the locker for safe storage of the laptop when not in
use. (E.g. No laptops should be taken to Physical Education classes)
3.3 Adhering to Department of Education Students Online policy.
3.4 Adhering to Churchlands Senior High School Acceptable Use Policy both at school and at home.
3.5 Taking “reasonable care” of the laptop to reduce the risk of damage or loss. Students must not
remove any stickers or decals from their laptops as this may void licensing agreements.
3.6 Not installing any software without prior approval from the school.
3.7 Backing up all data securely. Students must be aware that the contents of the laptop will be
deleted and the hard drive reformatted in the course of repairs.
3.8 Ensure all patches and updates are installed when requested.
3.9 Ensuring they are the only person to log into their laptop.
