Abortion Care Network <strong>Annual</strong> Meeting<br />
Atlanta, Georgia, March 21 – 23, <strong>2009</strong><br />
At this meeting of independent abortion providers<br />
from across the United States, <strong>Center</strong> attorneys<br />
discussed legal remedies <strong>for</strong> anti-choice harassment,<br />
legislative trends, and how the human rights framework<br />
can reduce stigma against abortion providers.<br />
Women’s Human <strong>Rights</strong> Training Institute<br />
Bulgaria, April 23 – 30 and November 12 – 17, <strong>2009</strong><br />
The Women’s Human <strong>Rights</strong> Training Institute—a<br />
highly successful program created by the <strong>Center</strong> and<br />
its partners the Network of East West Women and<br />
the Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation—trains<br />
lawyers in East and Central Europe to bring women’s<br />
rights and reproductive rights cases to national courts<br />
and the European Court of Human <strong>Rights</strong>. We convened<br />
the fourth and final session of the second<br />
institute in April and kicked off the third institute in<br />
November.<br />
National Abortion Federation<br />
<strong>Annual</strong> Meeting<br />
Portland, Oregon, April 26 – 27, <strong>2009</strong><br />
Abortion providers from across the United States and<br />
Canada gathered at this meeting, where the <strong>Center</strong>’s<br />
attorneys presented on current litigation, legislative<br />
trends, new developments in abortion care, and the<br />
privacy of patient medical records.<br />
Seminar on Maternal Mortality and Human<br />
<strong>Rights</strong><br />
São Paulo, Brazil, May 27, <strong>2009</strong><br />
This seminar—which we co-organized with the <strong>Center</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> Citizenship and Reproduction—brought together<br />
Brazilian and international experts to analyze why<br />
programs and policies against maternal mortality have<br />
been ineffective in Brazil. The findings are in<strong>for</strong>ming<br />
our advocacy ef<strong>for</strong>ts around a pending case we have<br />
against Brazil over the death of a young pregnant<br />
woman who was denied timely medical care.<br />
Women Human <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders International<br />
Coalition: Strategic Meeting with the UN and<br />
the African Commission Special Rapporteurs<br />
on Human <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders<br />
Geneva, Switzerland, June 18, <strong>2009</strong><br />
Increasing conservatism at the United Nations and in<br />
government circles, along with a backlash against human<br />
rights, has put women human rights defenders<br />
at risk. At this special meeting, women’s rights activists<br />
discussed their concerns with Margaret Sekaggya,<br />
the UN Special Rapporteur on Human <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders,<br />
and Reine Alapini-Gansou, the Special Rapporteur<br />
on Human <strong>Rights</strong> Defenders <strong>for</strong> the African<br />
Commission on Human and Peoples’ <strong>Rights</strong>. <strong>Center</strong><br />
President Nancy Northup presented on “Defending<br />
the Defenders of Sexual <strong>Rights</strong> and <strong>Reproductive</strong><br />
<strong>Rights</strong>.”<br />
