“In grandeur, splendour of
buildings, decorations…indeed in almost
every thing, it far surpasses all I ever
saw, or ever expected to see, in America”
Josiah Quincy on visiting
Charleston, 1773
Join us as we launch the Charleston Heritage Symposium
with its inaugural decorative arts and cultural heritage program,
Inside Neoclassical Charleston.
Limited to 75 patrons, the Symposium offers a delightful
fall weekend in this historic South Carolina seaport
renowned for its landmark buildings, magnificent homes
and gracious hospitality.
Enjoy the company of national and international experts as they engage
and enlighten us on Neoclassicism as it was interpreted in late 18th to early
19th century America and, specifically, in Charleston. Setting the stage with
the Keynote Address, The Hon. Simon Howard will discuss Castle Howard,
his home and one of the grandest of all English country houses. Then, we
are invited to examine the Neoclassical architecture and period furnishings
in three superlative private Charleston homes which will be open
exclusively for Symposium patrons. This is an extraordinary opportunity to
hear “inside” stories of life in these remarkable houses by their owners.
We look forward to welcoming you as we step
Inside Neoclassical Charleston.
