ffective education is not only about making education accessible but relevant. It is about helping the
learner recognize, acknowledge and utilize his or her potential to contribute to the family, society and nation.
Ultimately, education is a process of individual, social and national transformation. Teachers are key
contributors in enabling this transformation.
Today, students are living in an age of information overload and constantly seek to challenge their creative
minds. Hence, the challenge for the current day teachers is to transform themselves and their classrooms by
constantly innovating their pedagogic practices.
Mission10X, Wipro’s Quantum Innovation project is all about transformation through innovation in
teaching. It is about changing the fabric of our country through collective wisdom and shared responsibility.
I congratulate all the Mission10X community members on the second anniversary of Mission10X and wish

Mission10X is completing its second year of journey and the support extended by the academia

Mission10X - The Origin
Testing the Waters &
Designing the Framework
While industries struggle to acquire talent to keep pace with their ever increasing growth plans, the fact is that
there is an astounding number of engineering graduates who are not employable.
Wipro, as industry leader, took this challenge as part of its Quantum Innovation project to create significant
change in employability landscape. The approach taken was as follows:
2006 – 2007 - The Wipro team comprising of senior leaders conducted pilots for engineering faculty at
Shivamogga, Visakhapatnam and Pune. These interactive pilot workshops yielded insights into employability
challenges faced. The insights from such workshops helped evolve signature workshop of Mission10X and
Mission10X Learning Approach.

Thus evolved a need to design a new framework
Wipro conducted detailed research and
surveys involving over 300 academicians
and 50 heads of institutions to identify the
key factors that could improve
employability of engineering graduates.
Objectives Set
The key objective of this Mission is to
empower 10,000 engineering faculty by
2010 with Innovative teaching techniques
and tools that would enable them to help
learners:
• Imbibe higher levels of understanding
of subjects
• Effectively apply the concepts learnt
• Develop key behavioral skills required
for employability.
The surveys revealed that there is
significant gap in the employability skills of
the engineering graduates and current
teaching methodology used in the
institutes of engineering and the faculty
capabilities are the important areas that
needed focus.
Framework Chosen
In order to meet these challenges, the
Mission10X Learning Approach (MxLA)
was construed. MxLA is primarily designed
to engender innovation in learning cultures
in engineering education.
The implementation of this approach
involves a layered set of faculty enablement
programs.
The team felt the need for new learning paradigm that made
• Students imbibe ‘higher levels of understanding’ of
subjects taught and at the same time develop ‘key
behavioral skills’ in them.
There was a need to facilitate
• Engineering faculty through layered set of workshops
on Innovative teaching techniques and assist them in
the effective usage of Tools, Techniques & Technology
The new learning approach had to focus on
• Learning by interacting and integrated actions
• Innovation and competence building in Teaching-

placing learner at the centre of the educational

Mission10X - Launch
Embarking on the Journey
Mission10X – a not for profit trust, was conceived as a platform to improve employability of engineering graduates
in collaboration with academia. It was formally launched on Teachers Day, 5th September, 2007.

Commemorating Teacher's Day 5th Sep 2007, Azim H Premji, Chairman, Wipro Ltd, launched Mission10X amongst a gathering of
senior academicians which included Vice Chancellors, Deans, Principals, Vice Principals and Directors from various engineering
colleges across the country.

Initial Foray
Always in Listening Mode
In the first year of operation Mission10X had successfully put its foot print in 5 states of India. During this period
Mission10X enrolled more than thousand faculty members in the Mission10X Learning Approach.
Progress is determined by continuous improvement through a process of reflective inquiry. Keeping in the true
spirit of active learning, feedback for Mission10X is an important aspect of the reflective practice. It enables
Mission10X to strengthen existing best practices as well as work on areas of improvement in order to deliver
maximum value to our stakeholders.

a. To go beyond workshops
Relationship with Mission10X is an ongoing journey towards excellence. Every Mission10Xian
automatically becomes a member of the ever growing online knowledge community. While there is
active work happening on the base, it is important to continue to create awareness in the faculties about
issues of economy and cascade the desire for change. The challenge is to make the learners recognize and

b. Asset Creation for Engineering Education
The asset creation process of Mission10X helps generate world class resource material in various disciplines of
engineering. These materials help tap the rich and varied tacit knowledge of engineering faculty members.
This would eventually lead to the creation of a repository of world class learning assets that can be used to
transform the learning culture of engineering education.
As a part of the asset building process, Mission10X core team has developed two sample Resource Guides – Fluid
Mechanics and Microprocessor & Interfacing. These sample Resource Guides help the faculty of engineering
colleges across the country to create Resource Guides in their respective areas of expertise.
3. COMMUNITY BUILDING
a. Mission10X Portal – Teachers without boundaries
Mission10X, the community portal for engineering faculty helps connect the faculty spread across different
geographical locations. Apart from facilitating regular activities like online registration of participants ,
broadcasting of messages/events and serving as an online repository for the engineering assets. It also has certain
innovative features like :
• Mission10X in its true spirit of faculty community engagement created espace for interactions among the
Mission10Xians across the country.
• www.mission10x.com today is one of the largest community portals for faculty community.
• Apart from facilitating regular activities like online registration of participants, broadcasting of messages/

4. STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS
To take the innovative implementation of Mission10X to greater heights, Mission10X has collaborated with
many International and National Institutions.
In its constant endeavor to transform engineering education from being teacher-centered to learner-centric,
Mission10X has proactively partnered and affiliated with premier Universities.
c. Master Trainers
Promising participants of the MXLA workshop who have a flair and aptitude for imparting the Mission10X
methodologies themselves are selected and made to undergo a Master Trainer program. This is to ensure self
sustainability within the Zone /Institution. These Master trainers will in turn ensure the spread of the message of
Mission10X . The institutions to which they belong will become self sufficient over a period in conducting faculty
empowerment programs. They will continue to get support from Mission10X for Material , Methodology and
upgrading of the skills of the Master Trainer whenever there is an enhancement of the content.

Wipro Mission 10x training was the one of the most memorable and enjoyable
learning experience of my life. This is something I could not really imagine. In this
I have understood and practice the various innovative teaching techniques in our
education. This training was beyond my expectations.
These innovative techniques I have used in my classroom by which students were
more involved in classroom and their understanding for the subject was better. In
my opinion Mission 10X Training should be made compulsory for all teachers of

1. I am handling Mechatronics and microprocessors for sixth semester Mechanical students. In that subject I
used normal chalk and talk method to explain the working of washing machine. Then I used role play to
explain the same topic. When I started the conventional method to teach the working of camera one of the
student stood up and asked me to use role play instead of the conventional, which speaks of the credibility of
Mission 10X program.
I am really indebted to Mission10X team for ever.

Thank you very much for wonderful training/workshop that you have organized.All the three Faculty
Members our institute who attended the workshop are very happy and satisfied. Ever since they have joined
back, we find, their approaches to teaching have been changed.
We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that, our Institute is interested to have more of such

I am regularly following the mission10x in my lessons. I taught 'Object Oriented Programming' this semester.
I completed the syllabus, and wanted to do revision using a crossword that covers all the important concepts
to answer.
I gave this as group activity bench wise, the observation was that the learners were able to recollect all the
topics and all the benches answered it. Students who did it first were given away prizes. There was wonderful
reaction from students, I really enjoyed seeing them work together.
Instead of repeating the important concepts for 2 hours I did this in one hour!

Mission10X has a vision – a vision to enhance employability skills of students and bring about a paradigm shift in
the teaching-learning process by enabling faculty evolve from just being depositors of knowledge to facilitators of
learning. However, this change could be affected only if the transmitters and custodians of knowledge, the
teachers, themselves choose to embrace a new perspective of how teaching could be done. True to their profession
and ever willing to learn and gain new knowledge, faculty across India welcomed us with conviction invested
deeply and passionately in our Mission.
As on 4th Sep. 2009, Mission10X has touched 14 states, 157 workshops, 404 institutions and 4668 participants.
Given the uncompromising dedication and co-operation of all the Mission10Xians, institution management,
university authorities and team members of Mission10X, it seems apparent that the vision of Mission10X to
empower 10,000 faculty members by September 2010 will be an exciting and gratifying journey. Cascading from
here, it is expected that the employability landscape of engineering graduates of India will be significantly
impacted.
