The “90 ‘n 10” celebration has
been the School’s main focus of
the past few weeks. This has
been one of the most significant
events in the history of the
School. In particular, this
celebration marked the 10 years
since the School’s reformation
and resurrection. The opportunity
to thank the Charters Towers
community for the support
offered in 1999 when we were
closed was exceptional. The
School has entered a new phase
of its life and we are here to stay!
The support offered by individuals
and the broader community
needed to be recognised after 10
years of the new school and, at
the same time, the history and
tradition of the former schools in
St Gabriels and All Souls needed
to be acknowledged. The current
students were able to show their
thanks and appreciation by
acknowledging the Charters
Towers community in the street
march. The street march through
Gill Street was symbolic as it was
an event very similar to that
which stirred the passion of the
community and those interested
and connected to the School.
The series of events commenced
at approximately midday on
Friday, 11 June with students
running a torch relay from the
1942 Memorial at Fletcher Creek,
our spiritual home, to the School
with a mass run through Gill
Street to thank the Charters
Towers community. The
community was represented by
the past Mayors or Deputies of
the Charters Towers City Council
and Dalrymple Shires. The torch
arrived back on the campus at
approximately 6.00pm. This was
the signal to open the 2010 P &
F Fete.
Saturday saw an interested
group of approximately 70 past
students tour the campus with
the Headmaster and the School
Captains. There was a BBQ lunch
prior to the netball game
between the All Souls St Gabriels
girls and their traditional foe the
BTC netball team. The netball
was a tightly fought affair and
very exciting for the large crowd
that had assembled.
Unfortunately BTC got the better
of us in the dying minutes of the
encounter and were the winners
by a narrow margin.
This was closely followed by the
dedication of the pavilion
overlooking O’Keeffe Oval. The
pavilion was named the Joe Croft
Pavilion in memory of the 1943
Issue No 10 25 June 2010
Phoenix
Rising
School Captain. The dedication
speech was preceded by a
personal account of Joe Croft
from Mr Ray Fryer who knew Joe
Croft whilst at School. The
dedication address was given by
Mr Chris Allingham, Chairman of
the Board of Governors of All
Souls St Gabriels School.
The remainder of the afternoon
was occupied firstly by the rugby
league game between the All
Souls St Gabriels First team and
that of Columba Catholic College
(formerly Mt Carmel).
Whilst it was entertaining
football, the result was not the
one that we wanted. We were
unsuccessful in both the netball
and the rugby league. Full credit
goes to our teams who fought
on with exceptional enthusiasm
and determination.
The second part of the afternoon
was involved in the auctioning of
netball and rugby uniforms with
several thousands of dollars
raised by the Past Students
Association. Mr Andrew Jensen,
auctioneer and member of the
Board of Governors, successfully
parted people from their money
in good humour and much haste
in an entertaining and spirited
afternoon’s bidding.

Saturday evening saw a gala Black
and White Ball unfold before our
wide open eyes. The venue was
Halse Hall and a special marquee
brought in for the occasion. The
marquee was exceptionally well
decorated and presented with
every possible attention to detail
and it was elegance in the
supreme. The evening was a total
success with all parties enjoying
themselves. There were speeches,
auctions and dancing well into the
night.
Special thanks go to past student
Melissa Maff and her Ball
Committee including Cathy
Allingham, Kim Whelan, Jill Leake
and Robyn Maff.
The guests at the Ball were waited
on by students of the School. This
included being met and assisted
from their cars and ushered across
the red carpet to pre-dinner drinks.
We thank Mrs Kelly for overseeing
the waiting and clearing of tables.
The students were all well
mannered and carried out their
duties with enthusiasm and style.
They definitely helped make the
evening a stunning success!
Sunday saw us in Chapel with the
Bishop of North Queensland,
Bishop Ray and past student
Bishop Fryar, who is the Bishop of
Rockhampton, and along with
Father John and Brother Robin, we
celebrated the Eucharist in
wonderful style. The foundation
stone for the Past Students
Association Museum was blessed
by the Bishop of North
Queensland. The portrait of the
School’s first Headmaster of the
new era was unveiled at the
service. The portrait of the
Reverend Canon Dr Monty Morris
will be hung in Halse Hall along
with the other previous
Headmasters.
The final parts of the program
included an address by the
Headmaster to those interested in
the “State of the Nation” style
address looking at where we are
currently, from whence we have
come and finally where we intend
to go in the future. This address
was well attended with 200 plus
people attending the farewell lunch
immediately after the address.
The members of the “90 ‘n 10”
Committee, led by Ross MacLean,
were outstanding in their support
of the weekend and they worked
tirelessly in preparation for the
major functions of the weekend.
The operation was divided into
several sub-committees who had
specific task and projects within
the overall program. Thanks go to
Melissa Maff for heading up the
Ball Committee, Howard Lowe and
Tony Titley for leading the Past
Students Association, and Annette
Hall and Tony Salisbury for the P &
F contribution to the program.
In addition, a number of the
School’s staff members were
involved. Thanks go to Mr Chris
Chappel, Business Manager, for
keeping a close eye on the
finances, Mr Steve Bray for running
the Grounds and Buildings portion
of the preparation, Mrs Hilary
Grant for coordinating advertising
and merchandise and finally Mrs
Laurelle Thomson who coordinated
most of the administration for all
the groups. I truly commend
Laurelle for her endless work in the
preparation and running of the
celebrations on the weekend.
The life of the School continues to
be very busy with many different
activities and opportunities
occurring regularly. It is our hope
that students make themselves
available to participate in the many
opportunities that are on offer to
them.
The year, thus far, has been
successful in many areas. Our
sporting teams have participated
well in the Charters Towers District
Sports Association competition and
have experienced some success.
Our swimmers and cross-country
runners have been very
competitive and we see an everincreasing
standard of competition
in these carnivals. Our debaters,
public speakers and actors have all
done well in their performance
opportunities. The School’s
musicians have taken on some
different performance opportunities
thus far in 2010 and have also
performed well. All in all it has
been a successful first half of the
year. There are still many events to
come in the school calendar and
more opportunities for student
participation. We hope to see as
many students as possible taking
up the opportunities before them.
Tuesday, 22 June and Wednesday,
23 June were our Interhouse
Athletics Carnival days for both
Junior School and Senior School.
Both days turned out to be very
pleasant winter weather and very
enjoyable for all our students. The
carnival saw some excellent results
with a number of new records set
across a range of age groups. It is
worth noting that Heidi Hatch in
Year 11, Alban House, set new
school records in no less than
three separate events, in addition
to taking out the age
championship. Congratulations,
Heidi, on an excellent performance
at the interhouse carnival.
The Junior School competitors had
a wonderful couple of days and are
inspiring with their enthusiasm.
There were some very worthy
champions in the various age
groups and they are all to be
congratulated for their
sportsmanship and passion. The
House competition is a strongly
fought event and Page and Chad
Houses were victorious from
Feetham and Becket in second
place and Alban and Ramsay in
third.
In the Senior School there is
ferocious competition for the
House trophies and 2010 was no
different. There were some

PAGE 3 ISSUE NO 10 25 JUNE 2010
particularly tough battles fought in
the girls competition. The girls’
trophy was within a range of 17
points with only one point
separating first and second. Alban
House ended up the girls’
competition winner from Chad, with
Becket in a close third. The close
competition made the girls’ events
really exciting and produced some
wonderful finishes to races. The
Senior School boys’ competition
was not as close in points, but
there was still plenty of enthusiasm
and interest in the outcome. Page
was the eventual winner from
Feetham and Ramsay in third place.
The combined Senior School House
results saw Chad and Page
victorious over Feetham and
Becket, second, and Ramsay and
Alban third. The combined Junior
School and Senior School trophy
was awarded to Page and Chad
who were clear winners.
Thanks go to all the parents who
supported the events and to the P
& F for providing catering at the
Wednesday carnival. We also must
recognise the work of Ms Emma
Tompkins in organising and running
the Junior School Carnival and Mrs
Karen Storey for the organisation of
the Senior School Carnival. Thanks
also go to all the staff for assisting
in the running of events.
I would also like to acknowledge
the work of Mr Casten Lemson and
Mr Shannon Stanford in the
preparation and marking of the
fields and to Mr Steve Bray for the
organisation of the grounds
preparation. The fields all looked
wonderful for the events.
Parents, I hope you enjoy the
vacation time with your children as
they return home and have their
winter vacation. We look forward to
them returning to School refreshed
and re-energised and ready to take
on the challenges that await them
in Semester 2.
I will take this opportunity to wish
our Confraternity Netball and
Rugby League teams the best of
luck as they travel to Brisbane for
the State-wide competitions. They
will do us proud as they take on
their opposition teams with passion
and determination. There will be a
full wrap up of the teams and their
adventures in the next edition of
the Phoenix Rising. Good luck and
enjoy the vacation period!
please pray for:
Jamie Elliott & Family
Tricia Bradford and Family
Kylee West and Family
Deputy eputy Head ead
Half the year has gone already.
Included in this Phoenix Rising is
your child’s/children’s report. As I
say each end of term and
semester, please take the time to
sit down with them and discuss the
report. If things have not gone to
plan this semester, discuss what
went wrong (if anything) and set
goals for next semester.
Students need goals to aspire to. A
report card should not be
something that is briefly looked at,
ranted about, and then shoved into
a draw.
I also want to say that as parents
we need to praise our kids –
sometimes I don’t think we do this
enough. It’s very easy (and some
people would say human nature)
to focus on the things that need to
be fixed instead of what is working
well. As a parent writing to other
parents, do this as a trial – focus
on the positives and see the effects
on your children. I think you will be
surprised.
Travel day Term 3 has the normal
inclusions – our parent/teacher
interviews will be at Halse Hall
from 2.00-4.00pm. Bookings to see
teachers can be made by phoning
the administration over the
holidays. To assist us with our
planning, I ask that you finalise
your bookings by Friday, 16 July.
At this stage, Mr Brian Jones will
be supervising on the Karumba bus
and will not be available for
interviews, but should you wish to
see him, a message will be given
to Mr Jones to phone or e-mail
you.
Another important event
happening on the Term 3 travel
day is our subject selection
information sessions for Year 10
into Year 11 in 2011. To cater for
all our travellers and workers, we
have two information sessions
scheduled – one at 1.00pm and
one at 6.30pm. If you are coming
to one of these sessions, please let
us know for catering purposes (and
for photocopying purposes) which
one you will be attending by
contacting the administration on
4787 1433 by Friday, 16 July.
There are lots of events happening
next term (aren’t there always?).
We have QCS, more sporting
events and the Interschool Formal
(Years 11 and 12). The Formal is
being held on 4 August and I urge/
remind parents now that a hair
appointment is NOT a valid excuse
to miss an assessment deadline/
test. The best time to make hair
appointments would be after
3.00pm.
Classes resume on 20 July and just
a reminder that all students should
be in full formal uniform. My last
day this term will be 31 August. I
am organising to have a blog so
you can see our journey around
the world. All of our family will be

PAGE 4 ISSUE NO 10 25 JUNE 2010
updating the blog, so hopefully you
will see an adult’s and a child’s
perspective on the world.
I hope you have a safe and happy
break and I look forward to see
you all for Term 3.
Sam Kelly
Pastoral astoral Care are
Wow, it is hard to believe we’re
halfway through already and the
last couple of weeks has seen a
very hectic end of term.
The 90 ‘n 10 celebrations were a
fantastic time and I would publicly
like to thank the boarders for their
flexibility, help and enthusiasm.
Listening to tales of boarding from
old boys and girls it is incredible
how different boarding is in the
21st century. But some things don’t
change; like the strong lifelong
friendships that develop through
years of common experiences.
Such tales from old boys
apparently was the inspiration for a
few of our Year 10 boys to ‘brand’
themselves with a hot poker from
the campfire during the recent
Duke of Edinburgh expedition.
When I incredulously asked them
why they would do such a thing
they replied that they wanted their
own tale that they could all share
at their reunion in 20 years time.
Of course I would never condone
such behaviour, but I can’t help
feeling encouraged that another
generation of ASSG students are
already developing that indefinable
spirit born out of 90 years of
tradition.
Thanks, Ian
I would also like to thank Ian
Cameron for so ably stepping in to
cover Gully in Feetham Dorm as he
took leave for the last three weeks.
Ian’s willingness to fill in at other
times and his commitment to the
care of the boys is greatly
appreciated.
Leadership Positions
Already we are at the time where
our Year 11 students will be
starting to think about leadership
in 2011. Parents and students are
reminded that to be eligible for
formal leadership positions the
students must be at the
appropriate level in the behaviour
management system. There are
not many boys currently at this
level, so I strongly encourage Year
11 boys to start working towards
that goal before it is too late.
I wish everyone a restful break and
a safe return.
Agricultural Colleges Visit
We appreciated the visit from a
representative from the Agricultural
Colleges of Queensland, who spoke
to the Year 12s about the many
offerings of the colleges. There are
many more things to do than raise
livestock or grow crops, and this
was her emphasis.
Ramsay House Camp
Once again, the Ramsay group
camped along a delightful stretch
of the Burdekin River on Mr and
Mrs Robert Titley's property about
30km upstream from Charters
Towers. The ASSG kitchen's food
rations were, as usual, generous,
and the activities were fishing,
sleeping and eating. I thank Mr
Darryl Fry for his support on this
trip, also Mr Alan Watts, who drove
us to and from the camp.
Queensland Core Skills Test
Trial
Twenty-three of the Year 12s have
given of their best in seven solid
hours of testing during the last
week of term. The experience
should stand them in good stead
when the real testing occurs in
about ten weeks. I thank Miss
Lauren Norbury and Mr Mal
Schneider for taking on the
marking of the toughest parts of
the tests, so that the students can
get prompt, helpful feedback.
Work Experience
These students will sample work
experience during various parts of
the mid year holidays:
Robert Berryman, Year 10, BT
Meats, Charters Towers, butcher.
Kimberley Bryant, Year 9,
Charters Towers Veterinary
Surgery, veterinary assistant.
Josephine Curley, Year 12, Jack
Booy Surveys, Townsville, surveyor.
Fraser Lewis, Year 11, Hastings
Deering ( Australia ) Ltd, Mackay,
diesel mechanic.
Luke Philipson, Year 12, Jaysel
Electrical and Instrumentation,
Hyde Park, Townsville, electrician.
Cody Schaefer, Year 9, Smedley
Plumbing and Drainage Pty Ltd,
Currajong, Townsville, plumber.
Taylor Sivyer, Year 12, A B C
Learning Centre, Mt Isa, child care.
Genevieve Skinner, Year 12,
Daily Mercury Newspaper, Mackay,
journalist.
Brett Stout, Year 10, Cabinet
Craft, Garbutt, Townsville, cabinet
maker.
We are grateful to the various
employers for helping our
students.
Best wishes to everyone, and
happy holidays!
Arts rts Department
epartment
“My idea is that there is music in the
air, music all around us; the world
is full of it, and you simply take as
much as you require.” ~Edward
Elgar
The past few weeks have been
busy for the Music Department,
with many students (and teachers)
giving their talent and time in
various performances.
Over the 90 ‘n 10 weekend of
celebrations Sharna Webber,
Karissa Newton, Tessa Donaldson,
Grace Elliott and Alice Carter
performed beautifully at the
entrance of the Black and White
Ball. This was followed by the
Brass Ensemble and String Duet
playing at the chapel service on
Sunday.
I’d like to thank these students as
well as Miss Trina Beldon and Miss
Leslie Croker for their time in both
rehearsals and performances. The
performances were greatly
appreciated by all those that
attended. It is also fantastic to see
these students’ confidence and
ability improve with each
performance. I look forward to
seeing more students participate in
similar events in the future.
Unfortunately, the bands will not
have the opportunity to proceed
with the Cairns tour this year. Due
to unforseen circumstances, we
have had to pull out of the North
Queensland Independent Schools’
Music Festival this year. However,
we are quickly approaching
Eisteddfod time, for which both
ensembles and individuals are
working hard.
For music students, now is the
time to really focus on their pieces
and practice. Music needs to be
polished to achieve performance
standard. It is imperative in the
lead up to Eisteddfod that students
are vigilant in their home practice
and ensemble attendance. If
boarders require to practise in the
music room, please see Miss
Goodwin to arrange a time.
Remember: if there is a section of
music that is particularly
troublesome, practice that small
section repeatedly, then add the
bar before and after. Continue until
the whole phrase is perfect then
play the entire piece.
Art
Term 3 is always an exciting time
in the Art Department. Students
from Years 8 to 12 had work on
display in the Library and AV room
during the fete. Part of Creative
Arts students’ assessment was to
hang the works, and Kawane and
Jonathan Motlop worked very well
at this, as well as Koraleigh Elliott,
Jordan Pickering, and Kaitlyn
Maluga.
Thanks also go to the students
who helped with the fete and
“Sugar ‘n Spice” props and multiple
signs. I’d like to thank those
students who manned the
exhibition, arriving on time for their
shifts, and having a great time
talking to old students while they
were there.
The Shoe Competition devised by
Mrs Chapman was a great fete idea
and thanks to the great range of
entries. Clarice Goddard’s “banana”
shoes caused a few gasps, and she
worked very hard on moulding
these from plaster bandage.
This is also the time of year when
many students can look forward to
seeing their work displayed to the
wider public of Charters Towers in
the Show and the Eisteddfod Art
Competitions. We have a wide
representation in painting, drawing
and 3D works across the year
levels.
Next term we will be working on a
range of printmaking processes,
from monotypes in Year 8, through
linocuts, screen printing,
collagraphs, and other techniques
across the year levels. We hope to
have some works selected for the
Umbrella Studio Student In Case
exhibition later in the year, so
watch this space!
Drama
What a show! The Drama
Department served up quite a dish
with “Sugar ‘n Spice” last weekend.
With an entrée of spicy murder
intrigue, a main course of sweet ’n’
sour fairytales and polishing it all
off with a touch of delectable stage
band music, it was a feast for all!
One of the great benefits of
putting on a production such as
this is the teamwork across many
areas of talent. We had directors,
actors and actresses, sound and
light engineers, musicians, makeup
artists, caterers and ninjas. It
was an enormous sense of
satisfaction to witness the
culmination of these talents in
“Sugar ’n Spice.”
Thank you to Mr Jones for his
technological prowess, to Mrs
Jones for her impeccable
organisation skills, to Miss Hardey
for making the actors and
actresses look gorgeous, to Miss
Croker for her musical direction
with Stage Band, to Miss Carter
and Mrs Schneider for delicious
goodies, to Mr Bray and team for
maintenance and set up, to Miss
Farr-Harding at front of house, to
Mr Reynolds for his imaginative
Crown/Bandage Shoppe and Miss
Norbury for her chilling direction of
“It’s in the Blood.” Thank you also
to the students (and their parents!)
who supported this production - for
their dedication and hard work in
rehearsals. The biggest thank you
must go to Mrs Kempster. Without
her untiring enthusiasm and
devotion, “Sugar ’n Spice” would
have been left on the shelf. A
brilliant show all ‘round – great job
everyone!
Parents should note that coming
home over the holiday break, along
with their returning students,
should be an English grammar and
spelling folder.
Every student in Years 8 to 10 has
completed a semester’s worth of
activity sheets and it is well worth
the look to see what they have
accomplished. You should see
about 16 completed grammar
sheets and a score card, together
with a record of weekly spelling.
The folders are part of our School’s
ongoing commitment to increasing
the literacy levels of our students.
In turn, parents may encourage
their student’s commitment to
education and offer praise (or even
a reward!) for work done well or
for an honest attempt.
On the other hand, for work poorly
done, some extra encouragement
could be applied at home. With
school and home working together,
each student is sure to learn.
At the end of the holidays, please
provide your returning student with
a replacement manila folder which
will be used for the Semester 2
grammar sheets.
This term Year 11 General
Construction students have
successfully undertaken basic
framing and cladding exercises.
These newly acquired skills allowed
most students to finish
construction of their dog kennels.
The Year 12 General Construction
students have mostly completed
their modular furniture projects,
with several high quality TV
cabinets leaving the workshop
recently.
This time of year it is always good
to see students taking practical
projects home, some of which
have been under construction for
many months. One of the great
benefits of the Manual Arts is its
ability to have students focus on
medium term goals, instead of all
the instant gratification that is
promoted in today’s media.
The design of some senior projects
can take weeks. Measuring and
cutting materials takes even longer.
In most projects assembly is the
quickest aspect of construction.
Finally, it can take many weeks of
sanding and painting to get the
finish just right. Senior projects
almost always involve teamwork,
especially in moving large lengths
of timber between workbenches
and machinery.
Congratulations go to all the senior
students who finished their
construction projects this semester.
Because you have really have built
more than a dog kennel or piece of
furniture. You have built good
habits for your future.
Mathematics in Years 8 to 10
The mathematics program up to Year 10 has two distinct roles to play, namely to provide a service subject which
helps students with their level of numeracy and to prepare students for their senior school courses in Years 11 and
12.
Previously, we have been providing a general course based on a mixed ability approach for Year 8 and then
splitting them into an advanced or an ordinary mathematics course for Years 9 and 10 to cater for senior courses.
This year, our approach has been modified. As many students transiting from Year 8 to Year 9 need some extra
time to settle down into Year 9, we have delayed the split in level of mathematics taught by leaving Year 9 in
mixed ability groupings for Semester 1 whilst introducing a support group for those in need of extra assistance.
This has two additional benefits: (1) the teachers have a much better understanding of the level of each student
by the end of Semester 1 and (2) many students have a better idea of where they might be heading later.
The second role of mathematics (mentioned in the opening paragraph) must still be satisfied, especially in
algebraic areas, or else students will not have had enough time for the necessary development for Maths B and C.
Hence, for Semester 2, Year 9 students will now need to make the choice of mathematics level that has been
delayed by six months. These courses have been renamed pre-Maths A and pre-Maths B. Students should select
pre-Maths B if: their grades are high, (2) they think they will need Maths B for later courses and (3) they are still
unsure of what they might do later and they wish to keep their options open.
Obviously, pre-Maths B is a high level mathematics course, similar to the old Advanced Mathematics course, and
will not be suitable for some students. The Support Mathematics group will continue for Semester 2 of Year 9 with
the intention of transferring them in Year 10 to pre-Maths A so that they have experience with how senior courses
will be run.
If you have any questions about which course your child should be in, see their teacher at parent-teacher
interviews on Travel Day at the beginning of next term or contact me at:
Boys’ Boarding
Page Dorm
This report is just a short note to
end the term and to wish everyone
an enjoyable holiday. Some of the
boys, probably the majority, have
deserved the three week break.
First semester reports will catch up
with you all over the holidays and
when I look at my boarding reports
there are hardly any negative
comments. I’m not sure if I just
have a short memory, but it has
seemed to be a much more settled
and composed term from the
senior boarders with fewer
incidents for poor or misbehaviour
through the term.
It was nice to hear a comment
from Mr Schneider asking if
everything in the dorm was okay
because he hadn’t had any reports
lately involving the senior boys –
touch wood!
I have enjoyed the term and am
hopeful that we can continue to
build a comfortable and relaxed
boarding environment within the
senior dorm next semester.
Happy holidays and all the best at
the Confraternity Carnival!
Girls’ Boarding
Green Dorm
The end of first semester - where
has the time gone?
Well, all the Year 8s have chosen
who they want to share their bays
with for the second semester and
we moved during their last
weekend.
There was a trip to Townsville last
month when we chose several
students from each dorm to attend
the trip; from Green dormitory
those who went were Clarice
Goddard, Leela Kruger, Darrion
Kurjan and Tessa Donaldson.
This was a thank you to these girls
for a term well done; much help is
given from these girls in the
dormitory.
We have a “Versace” in our midst.
Arnaka Laffan has made a really
lovely jacket for the term of sewing
and has done a simply beautiful
job, other girls have made blankets
etc and have also produced wellmade
products.
We had church parade for Chad
and Page Houses on the last
Sunday of term. We also provided
assistances for the Black and White
Ball: Darrion, Leela, Clarice and
Tessa job well done girls.
We also need to pass on
congratulations to Bessie Ford who
came first place at the Pentland
Campdraft Junior Draft. She is
quite a horsewoman well done
Bessie.
During the latter part of the term
we welcomed to Green Dormitory
Amelia Coxon, Tora Marks and
Kaylar Nemo and we also
welcomed back Hayley Adams and
Tyla Kurjan.
We need to say good luck to all our
Confraternity girls and boys as they
head south to play their games
against the rest of Queensland.
The next term sees us with an
excursion, and we have the local
Show holiday where all the children
get to go to the Charters Towers
where they have a great day.
My thanks go to Sarah Valentine
for once again helping me while
being winged and writing a
combined report for the girls’
dormitories.
White Dorm
Greetings from White Dormitory.
Senior Student Profiles
Josephine Lucy
Curley was
born on 8 June
1993 in
Harrogate,
Yorkshire,
England, the
first child of
Patrick and
Sally Curley.
The family stayed in Yorkshire until
Josie was nine months old. They
then came back to Einasleigh, then
Mt Surprise.
Josie was schooled through Cairns
Distance Education for Preschool
and then Mt Surprise State School
until the end of Year 4. She started
Year 5 in our own Junior School
where she was taught by Mrs
Toohey who Josie says "is a very
patient and kind lady, who I still
get a boost to see around the
campus". Josie says "Mrs Royall
straightened me out with her
tough love policy, and the happiest
years of my school life were spent
in Junior School with my friends,
Genevieve Skinner, Rachael Clark
and Toni Rose Perry, and with my
wonderful teachers. It was good to
have the complete experience."
Somewhere around this time, little
Danielle was born (pictured above,
now in Year 1). It is very cool to be
in Junior School and come to
school with the news, "We have a
new baby!".
"In Year 8, I got lost on those first
few weeks, along with the other
Year 8 students, but I do
remember thinking, at last! I'm a
big kid!"

PAGE 9 ISSUE NO 10 25 JUNE 2010
Josie fondly remembers always
being welcome in White and Green
Dormitories, Mr Bliss for just being
there, and the difference for
boarders and day students wasn't
as noticeable for her as she always
has had special connections with
the boarders, especially Erin
Atkinson who she still misses.
Josie has special memories of the
Year 7 trip to Brisbane with Mrs
Royall and Mr Bliss. Josie and
Rachael Clark got themselves lost
on the trip because they didn't
listen to instructions.
Josie is a bit of an action woman in
the school as she plays netball,
softball, tennis and athletics. She
represented NQ in Year 7 in
softball, she represented NQ in
athletics and netball in Year 8.
Josie loves the bush and she hopes
to return there when she
graduates. She will be doing work
experience with Jack Booy Surveys
in Townsville to see how surveyors
work. Josie would like to work in
that field in the future.
Josie was inducted as a Prefect this
year as Captain of Alban House.
She has seen many changes here
at All Souls St Gabriels School in
the eight years she has spent on
the campus.
The new Multi Purpose Building is
her favourite new addition, as now
the girls can play netball in the
shade. The Sun Safe message is
booming loud and clear and we all
like that.
Josie is happy to have spent some
quality time with her peers in her
senior year, and especially with
Renee Spurdle, Charlene Owens,
Toni Rose Perry, Taylor Sivyer, Amie
Smith and Stan Munster.
She, like many of our students,
feels a unique ownership of the
School and all the things that go
with it. Josie said that the scenery,
trees, birds and the green grass is
welcoming, kind of like home.
These are the things that will be in
the memory book when she leaves.
What we remember about Josie, is
a little girl at the dormitory with
her classmates, with Justine
Furber, Cara Saunders and Jennay
and Emma Delacour. Josie was a
constant in our lives and we were
always delighted when mother
Sally brought baby Danielle to visit.
Allison Jean
Dines was born
in Charters
Towers 14 July
1993, the first
child of Michelle
and Shane
Dines.
The family was
joined two years later by Cameron.
They have lived and worked on the
land around Charters Towers
before and since Allison's birth.
Allison was home schooled through
Distance Education up until she
came here in 2006 to start Year 8.
Allison is one of our few remaining
'Ramsay Girls', as all the girls from
White Dormitory were moved to
Ramsay for two and a half terms
while the dorm was being
refurbished.
When Allison started school here
she was overwhelmed by all the
people walking around the
campus, and she was glad in those
first weeks to get back to Ramsay
in the afternoon and chill out with
all the other girls. All the little girls
were in together and they got to
know each other well. Allison
recalls that Natasha Cowan was
very kind to her. "Natasha is such a
lovely girl and she looked after me
very well. She will always be
special to me."
Allison sees the School as giving
her good opportunities. She works
the cattle with her father and they
spend a fair amount of time
mustering, so she was pleased
when she came here and met Mr
Harvey-Sutton and Mr Horne, as
they were father figures and good
role models for the students.
Allison was happy to wear the
uniform as she said that it gives
you a sense of belonging. The
Chad uniform has particular magic
as it goes with the war cry and
with (in Chad's case) winning.
Some of the opportunities Allison
has had include two and a half
years in the Cattle Club where she
had the experience of leading and
showing cattle. She was also
involved in the RITE program
where she was fortunate enough
to learn skills that she can use at
home when working the cattle.
Allison was about five or six years
old when she first rode a horse.
Now as a recreational pursuit, she
likes to ride her horse Sweetie
when she goes riding with her
mother. Allison likes to sometimes
cook biscuits for her dad and she
sometimes cooks the family dinner.
She has always attended and taken
part in campdrafts and horse
sports, and she looks forward to
the two campdrafts coming up in
Term 3.
After four years in White
Dormitory, Allison went to Green to
boost senior numbers. She has a
keen following with the little girls in
Green and she spends time with
Renee Spurdle and Toni Rose Perry
in the dormitory. Allison will leave
here in November with many fond
memories of her school, the new
Multi Purpose Building, the trees
and green grass, the kookaburras
and possums. She wants to thank
Mrs Chapman, Mr Horne and me
for being in her life. Allison leaves
us with the memories of a very
kind and helpful girl who was
especially welcoming to new
students, but the most precious
memory is of a true and loyal
young lady.
Junior unior School chool
We have managed to survive the
first half of the year and whilst
there have been some hiccups and
not everything has gone to plan.
There have been some wonderful
successes for many of our students
and staff.
Tuesday, 22 June and Wednesday,
23 June were our Junior School
Interhouse Athletics Carnival days.
Both days offered us very
comfortable and enjoyable winter
weather and each day was very
exciting for our students.
Excellent results were achieved,
with a number of new records set
across a range of age groups. Our
Junior School competitors
experienced a wonderful couple of
days and their enthusiasm was
inspirational to us all.
There were some very worthy
champions in the various age
groups and they are all to be
congratulated for their
sportsmanship and passion.
House competitions are strongly
fought events, especially for
athletics, and Page and Chad
Houses were victorious over
Feetham and Becket who placed
second, and Alban and Ramsay
placing third. In the combined
Junior School and Senior School
trophy Page and Chad were clear
winners.
Ms Emma Tompkins’ work in
organising and running the Junior
School Carnival must be
recognised. All Junior School staff
assisted in the running of events
and I also offer them my thanks.
I would also like to extend my
thanks and appreciation to all the
parents, staff and students of the
Junior School for making me feel
very welcome at Junior School. I
realise that I am a bit of a blow-in
from time to time. It worries me
that I am not always there
immediately to support everybody
in their issues. The Junior School is
a very warm place for the vast
majority of the time and even
when things are not going to plan
there is always a smile and some
words of encouragement for
whoever needs it and that is very
special.
Spelling Bee
We are going to have our students
from Year 1 to Year 7 participate in
an online Spelling Bee which has
been organised by The Courier Mail
in Brisbane and has some
exceptional sponsors including
Capilano Honey.
The Spelling Bee 2010 will provide
a fun environment for all ages and
abilities. The Spelling Bee aims to
have students test their spelling
abilities against their peers all
around the State and enhance
their vocabularies and
understanding of the English
Language.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premiers Reading Challenge is
on again in 2010 and it
commenced on 10 May and will
continue until 27 August. This is a
class event. Each student is to read
or have read to them 20 books to
receive a certificate. We look
forward to as many students
participating as is possible in 2010.
Mrs Silverwood in the Library is the
contact point for the Premier’s
Reading Challenge for 2010.
Junior School Support Group
The Junior School Support Group
has two main fundraising activities
running this term. They have been
selling football doubles for the
three State of Origin Matches. The
final game date will be 7 July.
Tickets are $5 each and can be
purchased through the holidays by
contacting the Main Administration
Office.
The second fundraising venture is
the sale of boxes of Cadbury

PAGE 11 ISSUE NO 10 25 JUNE 2010
Chocolates for resale. These have
always proved to be very popular
and easy for families to sell. If you
would like to participate again
boxes can be collected from Junior
School reception. All monies raised
by the Junior School Supporters
Group are spent on purchase of
Junior School resources.
Fun and Fitness
Fun and Fitness will resume in
Term 3 on Wednesday 28 July. I
would like to see as many people
as possible participating in the Fun
and Fitness program once they
return to school.
Winter Uniform
The winter uniform is the black
tracksuit from Titley’s; however, on
those really cold days, children are
allowed to layer underneath the
tracksuit and peel off those layers
as the day warms up. This might
mean they wear a jumper
underneath the tracksuit top with
the tracksuit top zipped up. Please
ensure our children wear layers
underneath their regular uniform
shirts (singlet, white t-shirt and/or
a thermal vest).
The tracksuit pants can be worn
any day; however, children must
bring their skirts/shorts to change
into, as on most days it is warm
again by lunchtime.
The green and grey jumpers/
sweaters are only for senior school
students (Years 8-12). We want to
keep the winter uniform as simple
as possible and maintain continuity
in our Junior School.
Jewellery and Hair
The following rules apply for
jewellery and hair at ASSG. Girls –
one pair of earrings (studs or small
hoops/sleepers), a simple chain
with a small cross, one signet ring.
No other items are permitted. Boys
– no earrings, chains or rings.
We would like to encourage boys
and girls to wear a watch to
school. Girls must wear their hair
in a ponytail or bun if their hair
reaches the collar when left out.
Only a white ribbon or white
scrunchie is to be worn with buns/
ponytails.
During Term 2 we experienced an
outbreak of students making poor
decisions about their dress and
general behaviour. One particular
area was the standard of student
dress with shirts not being worn
correctly, ie tucked, in which was
an issue with some students.
There have been many warnings
and repeated requests to wear
the uniform correctly. It appears
that some students deliberately
chose to ignore requests and
continued not to meet the dress
code.
In Term 3, students who fail to
meet the code will be recorded in
the playground book and upon
three entries will either forfeit
their ability to represent the
School or their play break time. A
similar situation arose with
chewing gum. Gum is not to be
brought to school or consumed at
school.
Consequences will be enforced for
students who cannot meet the
School’s expectations.

P & F News ews
CONGRATULATIONS to
everyone who was involved in any
way with our very short, but
extremely successful biennial fete,
held on the big 90 ’n 10 weekend.
The bank balance has increased by
over $9000 due to your
enthusiasm, donation of time, help
and money and the committee
could not have done it without
your support.
Those who helped know who they
are and I wish to publicly thank
them and express the sincere
gratitude of Tony, Annette and I.
I’ve said it before and no doubt I’ll
say it again: the only way the P &
F can function positively is with
positive contribution (thought,
word and deed) of the whole
school community.
On that note I encourage as many
as possible to attend the next
meeting:
TRAVEL DAY (19JULY)
5.00pm in the AV Room
Late afternoon tea available
Some topics up for discussion:
* how to spend our money!
* 4th term fund-raising:
CT Races, Halloween Dance
* Ideas for grant applications
Another big thank you to Kylie
Stretton who has offered to run the
uniform shop. This facility will be
run as a donation only service –
this may alter as time goes by, but
due to the complications and time
involved in the original system we
have decided to keep it simple for
Kylie. Suitability of uniforms for
sale will be at Kylie’s discretion and
the standard will be high so please
do not donate any items that you
would not buy yourself. The shop
will be opened at the beginning of
each term on travel day and one
afternoon a week (TBA).
Interhouse Sports
Yvonne Schaeffer organised the
catering at the Interhouse Athletics
Carnival like an old hand and my
thanks to her for taking it on. She
has been helping for a few years
now and this natural progression of
taking responsibility is what a
Parents and Friends Assoc should
be all about. This way fresh hands
can take over before gnarled ones
become jaded and then they are
still around to help (or interfere as
the case may be!!!!). Many thanks
Yvonne for a job well done and
everyone who helped on the day or
donated goods.
As always my lines of
communication are open and the
people, hear new ideas or be of
service when we can.
A big “Thank You” goes out to
everyone who donated goods for the
fete Bottle Stall.
We had over 300 bottles for prizes
and were able to make about $700.
Thank you for your generosity. It
was greatly appreciated.
29 June 2010
Dear Parents
On behalf of the Board a very big thank-you for taking the time to support the recently
conducted school survey. A very high 82% responded when contacted which has enabled
the collection of a large amount of comprehensive information.
We now have a preliminary report of your responses which indicates areas that the School
must address. For example, the three lowest ranking areas were quality of food, behaviour
management and recreational activities for boarders. In the behaviour management area,
there were concerns expressed about bullying. On the positive side, the three highestranking
scores were the School's sporting facilities, level of care of boarders and general
image of the School.
Where to from here? Unfortunately, Bill Cummings, whose company conducted the survey
for us, left for three weeks holiday at the end of the data collection period and as a result,
we have only received preliminary reports of the Parent and Staff surveys. We are still
waiting on the Exiting Survey (parents of students who have left over the last two years)
results and a comprehensive report on all areas.
Changes are already in motion for the Behaviour Management System used in the School
and other areas will be addressed as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your patience.
Chris Allingham
Chairman
ASSG Board

21 June 2010
Dear Parent/Guardian
If your child is interested in joining or continuing the All Souls St Gabriels School Music program in Term 3
2010, please read through the information below and return the completed form to Miss Goodwin by Friday,
23 July 2010. Learning a musical instrument provides many benefits; it enhances teamwork, self-expression,
co-ordination, self-confidence, concentration and much, much more. It’s important in your child’s interest that
you please read carefully through the following information.
INSTRUMENTAL LESSON: $17 / half hour – private lesson
Instrumental lessons for Keyboard/Piano, Woodwind (flute, clarinet & saxophone) Brass (trumpet, French
horn, euphonium/baritone & trombone) Strings (violin/viola) and Drums/percussion will be held during
school time for ½ hour per week.
GUITAR LESSONS: $20/half hour – private lesson, $14/half hour – small group lesson
Due to the increasing demand for guitar lessons, most junior students will be placed in a lesson with one other
student. The small group lesson rates apply to these lessons.
VOICE LESSONS: $26 / half hour – private lesson, $15/half hour – small group lesson
Due to the increasing demand for guitar lessons, most junior students will be placed in a lesson with one other
student. The small group lesson rates apply to these lessons. Voice lessons will be held during school time for
½ hour per week or by negotiation with boarding students or parents after school.
AMEB EXAMS: It is recommended that if your child is interested in gaining music levels in either instrumental
(and/or voice), an additional lesson each week will be required.
SCHOOL BAND & CHOIR:
Once your child reaches a suitable skill level (usually after one term) they may be invited to join either the
school band/choir or various instrumental/vocal ensembles.
INSTRUMENT HIRE:
As you may appreciate, the number of instruments available to students at the school is limited, so if it is at all
possible for your child to use their own instrument, this would be greatly appreciated. (Students learning
Drums will only be required to provide their own set of drumsticks). There is no hire fee for piano/keyboard.
Students who are not members of the school band can borrow a school instrument at the cost of $55 for the
year. Supplies of some instruments are limited and will need to be discussed with me as soon as possible as to
their availability.
If your child is interested in joining the ASSG Music program, please fill out the particulars form provided. Some
places may be limited and students doing Classroom Music or are in the Band will have first preference. As
some areas could be limited, it is imperative that you return this form to me as soon as possible.
In signing this document you are formally acknowledging the consent for you child to partake in
instrument/voice lessons for 2010 with the understanding that all tuition/school hire fees will be made
payable to the School. Please be aware that it is the senior students’ responsibility to remember to go to their
lessons. Unless the student is formally absent from school and has notified reception of this absence, the
tuition fee still applies. Junior students will be reminded by their classroom or instrumental teacher. You are
also formally acknowledging that if your child ceases lessons before the end of a term, you will be required to
payout the remainder of the lessons for the term which your child would have otherwise attended.
If you have any questions please phone me at the School on 4788 2232.
Yours sincerely
Miss Aimee Goodwin
Acting Head of Arts

Dear Parent/Guardian
If your child is interested in joining or continuing the All Souls St Gabriels School Dance
program in Term 3 2010, please read through the information below and return the completed
form to Miss Goodwin by Friday, 23 July. As the Music Program at All Souls St Gabriels
expands, other elements of “The Arts” are now being incorporated. Dance lessons will operate
in the same way that music instrumental lessons do. Learning dance provides many benefits; it
enhances physical fitness, self-expression, co-ordination, self-confidence and much, much
more. It’s important in your child’s interest that you please read carefully through the following
information. If your child was involved with our dance program in 2010 and wishes to continue
this year please indicate this preference on the attached form.
Dance Lessons: $12/half hour - group lesson / $22 individual lesson
Dance lessons will be taught by Miss Katrina Korn, who is a qualified Dance Teacher.
Students will primarily study Modern Dance with elements of other styles such as Ballet, Hip
Hop etc during school time, for ½ hour per week. Group lessons will be capped at 6 students
per group.
FATD Examinations
After a certain level of skill is obtained, it will be possible for your child to prepare for an FATD
examination. It is recommended that if your child is interested in gaining dance levels, an
additional lesson each week will be required. It is possible that some of these lessons will be at
a reduced rate.
Dance Outfit and Footwear
It is necessary to wear suitable clothing when dancing, not only to be comfortable but also to
ensure you have full movement. This outfit will also be suitable to wear at some performances.
Miss Korn will discuss with you an appropriate and cost efficient dance outfit. Some day
students involved with dance lessons in town will possibly already have suitable dance attire.
The cost of dance outfits and footwear can be charged to school accounts.
If your child is intending to join the All Souls St Gabriels Dance program, please complete and
return the permission form enclosed. Please be aware that it is the senior students’
responsibility to remember to go to their lessons. Unless the student is formally absent from
school and has notified reception of this absence, the tuition fee still applies. Junior students
will be reminded by their classroom or dance teacher. In signing this document you are formally
acknowledging the consent for your child to partake in dance lessons for 2010 with the
