Andrew: He w<strong>as</strong> defending himself on charges that included atheism—it<br />

is no wonder he broached the topic!<br />

Pakaluk: You must admit he does more than mention the gods; he swears<br />

by them. The l<strong>as</strong>t sentence of his defense is, “I turn it over to you and to<br />

the god to judge me…” (35d).<br />

Andrew: Yet he never comes out and says, “I believe.” He wriggles out<br />

of the charge that he denies the gods by pointing out that this charge<br />

contradicts the other charge against him, that he acknowledges daimonic<br />

activities (27). How much simpler would it have been to say what he<br />

believes, instead of refuting the charges strictly by their own lights!<br />

Pakaluk: He may not set out his beliefs clearly and directly, but his<br />

religiosity is certainly implied here.<br />

Andrew: Or maybe all these invocations of gods and daimons are not<br />

professions of belief but mere figures of speech.<br />

Pakaluk: Figures of speech Why would he speak of “the god” judging<br />

him unless he believed it to be true<br />

Andrew: Why do I say “God bless you” when my friend sneezes Why did<br />

you take Jesus’ name in vain earlier when you were startled to find yourself<br />

<strong>as</strong>leep at your desk W<strong>as</strong> it to express a deep Christian conviction<br />

Pakaluk: Don’t be fresh with me.<br />

Andrew: We are all products of our times. Socrates’ acceptance of some<br />

form of polytheism fulfilled a social obligation, not a philosophical one.<br />

Pakaluk: Let’s talk about daimons, then, since you brought them up. Belief<br />

in daimons w<strong>as</strong> beyond the call of duty; Socrates could have placated<br />

the polytheist plutocrats without mentioning daimons at all. Yet he seems<br />

proud of his own personal “daimonic sign” that flares up when he is<br />
