PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
LA Regional Is Just A Few Weeks Away
by Jan Wickersham
This month, President John Killian asked Vice President
Jan Wi ckersham to write the President’s column.
Greetings and Happy New Year to all my fellow bridge
players!
President John Killian asked me if I would like to write
the column this month, and my reply was that I would be
delighted to do so. As many of you may already know, I
am going to be serving the district as Tournament Manager
for the Los Angeles Regional, February 21-27, just around
the corner. It is my desire to see our Regionals return to
what they once were, and I will do my best to work to that
end. I am hoping to see you there and will welcome your
comments and suggestions.
The LAX Hilton is an upscale hotel, a greatly
improved venue over the Radisson. I think you will be very
pleased with the quality of this hotel. Parking is in a covered
structure which is located near the playing area, and
the Hilton has offered us parking for $5.00 per day with in
by Alan Le Bendig
Our membership has continued to steadily increase.
We have 462 more members than we did at the end of last
year for a total of 150,440. These are paying members and
represent an increase of 0.3%. Counting unpaid Life
Masters, our total membership is 168,380 which is 0.7 %
higher than it was at the end of 2003.
We are going to start stating our membership in terms
of active members only. Any names that remain inactive
for a period of more than 24 months will be considered
“bridge-dead.” We are well aware of the fact that we are
still carrying names on our roles of people that are no
longer with us. Any activity at all from inactive names
such as earning any Masterpoints or submitting an address
change will keep them on our roles. Don’t forget that even
Masterpoints earned in a club game are collected in
Memphis.
One very positive sign is that our renewal rate has
increased for our first and second year members. This has
historically been the most difficult group to keep as members.
Some more good news is that our tournament table
count was way up over the 2003 figures. The actual figure
is 172,691 tables. This represents an increase of 7.73%.
Regionals and NABCs showed the largest increases.
and out privileges. Should you want to take off some time
from the Bridge table (hard to imagine) there are shuttle
buses that run every hour in front of the hotel that will drop
you at the Manhattan Beach Mall for shopping.
Schedules are available at the front desk.
The Hilton is offering a very generous rate of $89.00
per night, and if you stay five nights or more, they will
reduce the price to $79.00 per night.
I want to encourage all of your ‘299er players to come
to the tournament. Each day there is a game just for you
and a chance to win lots of points. There will be a special
prize for the ‘299er who wins the most points for the tournament,
and, just maybe that could be you!
Barbara Dicker is serving as partnership chairman. If
you want to come, but don’t have a partner, she can help
you find one. If you want to contact her before the tournament,
she can be reached at: (562)688-1185.
On another note, I want to congratulate Jill Meyers for
being named the #1 Woman Player in the World for 2004!
She’s always been #1 in my book, but it’s nice to see that
the rest of the Bridge world thinks so, too.
District Director’s Report: Membership
Continues to Steadily Increase
STACs are still popular and the Sectionals remained steady.
There was a study released from Albert Einstein
College of Medicine showing that playing cards “trumps”
Alzheimer’s disease. The researcher now has applied for a
grant to look specifically at the effects of bridge as it pertains
to an Alzheimer deterrent. Our Marketing Dept. submitted
a letter of support for this grant. Since we see so
many very elderly bridge players, I think most of us have a
very positive sense of what our game does for an aging
mind.
I only know of one motion so far for our Pittsburgh
meetings. The reason is that this is my motion! We currently
have a requirement that each zone (East, Central and
West) gets to host one NABC each year. I am suggesting
that we eliminate this requirement and concern ourselves
more with booking our NABCs in cities that our players
WANT to visit. It is certainly much easier to travel than it
was when that regulation was passed. Even if my motion
passes, don’t expect to see any changes in the near future.
Our NABCs are currently scheduled through 2012.
I was very pleased to see the new column in our paper.
I know Karraine Murray and a column written for the
199ers is long overdue. If you haven’t read it yet, check it
out - Kibitz With Karraine.. I wish I could write as well as
she does!
There’s still space in Pittsburgh but it’s going quickly!
A Basic Guide To
Exclusion Blackwood
By Mike Savage
Traditionally when you have a void and are looking for
slam, bidding Blackwood - asking for aces or controls – is
considered not to be the best approach and cue bidding
seems to be the only other option to find out about controls.
However, wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could ask for aces
or controls and tell your partner not to count any in a certain
suit (your void)
Well there is a convention that does just that. It’s an
expensive one though, as the inquiry bid almost always
starts at the 5-level! It’s called Exclusion Blackwood – as
you cue-bid the suit you want excluded from partner’s
answer to Blackwood. After trump agreement – usually
shown, sometimes implied - a jump shift to the 5-level (if
hearts are trumps, to 4S) in a suit that can’t be trumps is
Exclusion Blackwood. Examples are: 1C-1S 3S-5D
(Exclusion Blackwood with a diamond void; 1H-3H 4S
(Exclusion Blackwood with a spade void); 2C-2D 3D-5C
Attention Clubs and Club Managers
February is Junior Month. Clubs and club managers
can help members earn more masterpoints by holding
junior fund games during February.
Here is how your club can help! Any regularly
scheduled sanctioned session during the entire month of
February can be a Junior Fund Game. Players pay an
extra $1.00 per session and can win sectional-rated black
points. For example, if you hold a weekly game on
Tuesday afternoon, every Tuesday afternoon during
February can be a Junior Fund Game.
Reminder: In addition to the February games, up to
four Junior Fund Games per month can be held every
month except April and September.
Help build the future of duplicate bridge by participating
in Junior Fund Games. Your support for the Junior
Program is sincerely appreciated.
If you have any questions, please call or email
Charlotte Blaiss, ACBL director of youth/junior programs,
It’s Almost Time for Grand National Teams
Dates have been set for this year’s Grand National
Team Events. The open and flight C events will take
place on April 9-10. Flights A and B will take place on
May 14-15. All four events take place on a weekend at
the Bridge Academy in Reseda. The Saturday event will
be run as a swiss team event with the teams with the
most victory points qualifying for a knockout final on
Sunday. The event is open to all members of District 23
and players can enter more than one flight. An entry
blank can be found on page 7 of this publication and is
due four days before the event. The conditions of contest
were published in December.
For those of you that have not entered in previous
years this is a chance to find out how exciting this event
can be. Everyone can be competitive in at least one of
the flights. The four winning teams will be eligible to
represent our district in Atlanta this summer. All entry
fees will be split between the teams that go to Atlanta,
helping to pay some of the travel expenses. Our district
pays the expenses of running this event so that 100% of
the entry fees can be returned to the winners.
If you have any questions call Howard Einberg at
310-475-9784 or Bill Wickham at 310-234-3238. You
Cancelled
The Spring Glitter Gulch Sectional in Las Vegas,
March 7-10 has definitely been cancelled.
The Plaza Hotel and Casino where the Las Vegas
Sectionals have been held for over 20 years was sold to
another organization and Unit 373 lost its space. The
convention space was filled up by the new owners with
their own clients like Nascar and The World Series of
Poker.
The Las Vegas membership apologize for the any
inconvenience that this may cause our loyal guests and
are very sorry and hope that you will continue to attend
their tournaments in the future
If you have further questions please refer to the
www.lasvegasbridge.com, e-mail tournaments@lasvegasbridge.com
or call Helen Allen at 702-870-2962.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
As he has taken to doing lately, Ron Garber has used
his book-review column in the pages of the ACB's
District 23 publication to vent his personal hatred of me
and give false information to readers. In the January
2005 issue, he misstates the title of my autobiography as
“The Principle of Restricted Talent.” I am confident that
Garber has not read my actual autobiography,
“Everybody's Out of Step But Johnny,” which has relatively
little to do with bridge (although a joke in one of
Alfred Sheinwold's bridge columns has the title as its
punch line). The Principle of Restricted Talent was written
jointly by the wonderful Nick Straguzzi (the main
author in that 6 of its 21 chapters were written by him
alone) and me. Although the book is written in the first
person, the narrator is the entirely fictional Mike Barton,
to whom Nick and I are related only minimally in that we
both have had careers in computer programming.
KIBITZ WITH KARRAINE: THE 199ER REPORT
Rain, Rain, Rain = Play, Play, Play
By Karraine Murray
Rain, rain, rain equals PLAY, PLAY, PLAY!! Hey,
199ers! What were you doing during all that rain I know
you weren’t outside replanting your amaryllis bulbs. I
doubt you were hiking the Santa Monica Mountains or
rollerblading through Venice. No, the correct answer is:
You were at the club playing bridge! That kind of monsoonal
weather is just perfect for ensconcing in a nice
warm, dry classroom or club, amongst the merry din of
bridge players. That is what you were doing, right
Because my friends, that is our collective resolution this
year, PLAY, PLAY, PLAY! You can’t improve if you don’t
play.
Speaking of which, there will be a WONDERFUL
opportunity at the end of the month for all of us 199ers to
put this resolution into effect. THE LOS ANGELES WIN-
TER REGIONAL will be near LAX at the Los Angeles
Hilton from Monday, February 21 through Saturday,
February 26 and I want you all to come out and play in at
least one 299er game. YES, YOU CAN (I have columnist
ears and I heard that barely audible whine). The times/days
for the 299er (the closest we can get to 199er) events are:
Monday at 7:30pm and Tuesday through Saturday at 10:30
am and 3:00 pm. You can attend with or without a partner
(call ahead if you are without a partner) and parking is $5.
Carpooling is also an excellent idea. I am planning to
attend the Monday night game, so why don’t you come out
and introduce yourselves We can support each other, and
I’d love to meet you.
And I would like to say one more thing about this rain
business. That is how you pronounce my name. It rhymes
with rain. The rain. Karraine. The rain in Spain falls mainly
on Karraine. Not Corinne, not Coreen, not Carrie-anne,
not Karin or Karen or Corina. KA RAIN. Period. No one
has any problem with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – it rolls off of
people’s tongues like butter.
Onto more bridge happenings. Big news and changes
at Barrington! Barrington gets a face lift! Adrienne Green
is now one of the owners of the Barrington Bridge Club and
she, along with current owner E’Anne Conaway, have just
completed a renovation including new tile, carpeting, and
furniture, not to mention plans for some new games. On
Thursday nights, Barrington will host an open game at 7:15
pm – with a kick-off pizza party the first time on February
10. In the works for the future is a Sunday afternoon game,
so stay posted. Adrienne, who is an electric bundle of energy
around the club, told me that one of the things she loves
about bridge is that at any level it is an opportunity to use
your mind, meet people and share a common bond. She is
even offering a special for any new player who has never
played at the club to come out and play his or her first game
for free! Come on 199ers (or anyone) this is your chance
to start changing your lives!
Here is a list of the 199er games at Barrington:
Friday Nights with Pat Banks Lecture at 7:15 pm, game
at 7:30 pm. Pat has taken over the Friday Night 199er game
which was previously directed by Marie Dahl. It is a pleasant,
comfortable game, with plenty of regulars and Pat’s
ship is a little more relaxed than Marie’s. So far when I’ve
played, she hasn’t run the timer. Yay! Pat, who has been
playing bridge for 30 years, says she learned bridge when a
friend of hers put their friendship on a back burner to the
game. Pat’s goal is to make the Friday night game the
friendliest game in town with an impressive line up of guest
speakers. Last week she even brought out a birthday cake
and made the whole club sing to one of the players.
Hmmm, maybe we all want to delete our birthdays from the
club’s database.
Wednesday Afternoons with Wayne Karson Game at
12:30pm. Wayne’s game provides a casual, laid-back environment
perfect for newcomers to duplicate bridge. And
for encouragement, I offer you this deep morsel from the
guru himself, “Bridge is all about losing. Even the best
players in the world lose more than they win.” Hey guys,
isn’t that a relief Of course, just when I’m starting to feel
hopeful again, Wayne, whose talent roster includes accomplished
pianist (get over yourself already) comes up with
this, comparing adept bridge players and gifted musicians:
“Intelligence in music requires visualization as it does in
bridge.” Me, I can’t read a note. Oh well.
Now, 199ers, I know I report mostly from Barrington
since that is where I play and where I started, but I do
encourage you to check out the lessons and games in your
area which are listed on the back page of this paper in the
Bridge Club Directory.
I am also venturing out, now that the rain has subsided,
to do some surveys of my own. Let me tell you of my little
adventure in the Palisades Game.
On Wednesday nights, Tony Scott runs a lovely dinner
game up in the Palisades. I called him and told him I was
doing research for the 199er column and wanted to check
out his game. Well, you can’t beat this deal. For ten bucks
you get a well-balanced delicious dinner, complete with
dessert and coffee. The players are unbelievably friendly
and professional. I would recommend this to any 199er
who has been playing duplicate and wants a challenge.
Now, you might ask, why do I say challenge Well, what
charming Tony neglected to mention was that the average
player master point count in that game is IN THE THOU-
SANDS! Now, I know, accumulation of points does not
always a stellar player make, but… It’s still a good time,
and I’m looking forward to going back.
OK, I’m running over my allotted word count so I better
wrap it up.
DID YOU KNOW The double of an artificial bid is
lead directing. Because the bid is artificial, for example:
TWO CLUBS STAYMAN, or JACOBY, or TWO DIA-
MONDS WAITING AFTER A STRONG TWO CLUBS
OPENER, the opponents will bid again. You just want to
tell your partner what to lead. This can be the key to setting
the contract.
SILLY TIDBIT: Hands down the cutest outfit award in
Barrington’s Friday 199er game goes to Joanie Pepper. The
Peppers are also THE team to beat, East/West. Come on!
JOKE OF THE MONTH: Two partners have been
playing for some time and without fail the one ALWAYS
bids 2NT over his partner’s 1NT. Finally, the 1NT bidder
asks, “Partner, why do you always raise my 1NT to 2NT”
Partner replies, “Because I know your most dreaded contract
is 1NT.” -shared by Carl Dahl
MY THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH: You’ve heard it
a million times. You’ve even repeated it without thinking.
But in bridge it’s really really true. It’s not whether you win
or lose, but how you play the game.
Please email me with your comments, suggestions,
questions and/or frustrations. I’m here to help.
KibitzWithKarraine@yahoo.com.
See you at the Los Angeles Regional! And remember,
SHUMAN: 3♥. Love this hand on the
bids 3NT (showing what might be a “wasted”
heart value for slam, and 6♦ after any
other response by pard, ready to apologize
if he holds x Qx KQJxx KQ10xx, but
shouldn’t he just “double” 1NT with that
hand, whether responsive or otherwise
SHUSTER: 4♦. I must make some sort of
positive move with all of these cover
I don’t see how 3♥ would help partner
make a more effective final decision.
KLEINMAN: 4♦. Wonderful cards: aces
in the majors, where partner is short (most
pard know there might be a game. The
rational choices are 4♦ and 3♥. With only
three trumps, 4♦ seems about right.
John’s partners must bid a lot more
than I would. In fact, with his regular part -
ner, I know that is true. But I would never
force the bidding to the three level with
that misfitting hand and I probably would
not accept an invitation to game with x x
WITTES: Very tough problem. Partner is
probably short in diamonds and could not
act. Double is out, since I cannot stand to
hear partner’s probable bid of clubs. Pass
is a possible action, since we rate to get a
plus score, and I have far too many values
in diamonds, and too little elsewhere.
However, if partner has only his share of
the missing values with at least one four
card major, we may have a game.
Therefore, the choice is between a conservative
3♥ and the aggressive 4♦. I’ll go
for aggression and bid 4♦, though I still
have a lot of sympathy for pass. The good
news about bidding 4♦ is that if partner is
3-3 in the majors, he will bid 4♥, so at
least we’ll play our eight-card fit.
SHUSTER: Pass. When they pre-empt in
your best suit you should always consider
passing. On this hand, all my major suit
values are soft cards, hightening the danger
of entering the auction. Partner,
marked with shortness in diamonds, was
unable to double, so either partner is light
in values or long in clubs (without enough
direction to bid 4♣). If I were to bid, I have
no idea whether double, 3♥ or 3NT would
be the right approach, so even when some
positives action would be successful, I still
must guess which one. It must be better to
try for a plus score here.
SHUMAN: Pass—just a guess, as nobody
knows the answer. The problem is worse
if vul vs. not vul. For now if I pass, and we
have a game, I’m risking TWICE the
IMPs. If vul, I’d have to try 3♥ (my 2nd
choice here), and shoot dice, as RHO
might bend that one! Now, picture partner
“escaping” to 4 clubs! I guess we shouldn’t
live in fear of the worst scenario.
JONES: PASS! With most of my values
in the opponent’s suit this looks like an
easy pass. If partner, with shortness in the
opponent’s suit, couldn’t bid, it’s not likely
we are missing game.
KLEINMAN: Pass. No good suit, only
5 H C P outside diamonds, and few fast
tricks for 3NT make entering the auction
unwise. I’ll defend, expecting a small plus.
At the table my partner bid 3♥ with
this hand. I raised to 4♥ with xx Ax xx
AKxxxxx, and we were doubled, going
down several tricks with a 6-0 tru m p
break. As it happens, we can make 3NT. I
didn’t overcall 4♣ since I thought, if we
had a game, it was probably 3NT, but
lacked the nerve to bid it myself.
Nevertheless, I thought, and still think, the
percentage call is to pass with partner’s
hand. Leo Bell tested it on a software pro -
that pass was the big winner.
JONES: 3♠. The 3♦ bid robbed us of the room we
needed to show extra values and spade support by jumping
to 3♠. Now 3♠ is conservative and 4♠ is aggressive.
Is 3♥, trying to show a three and a half spade bid, a reasonable
compromise No, because 3♥ being my only
below 3NT cuebid, pard will think I have extras with
good clubs, not spade support. Forced to choose 3♠ or
4♠, I will go conservatively due to the increased chance
of bad breaks given opener’s 3♦ call.
I think the hand is strong enough to bid 4♠, but if I
wanted to invite I would bid 3♥. Partner would think
that my bid showing spades improved his hand, so it
should be an invitation in spades. But if partner thought
it might be an invitation in clubs, and he was willing to
accept, he would bid 4♦ or 4♥ as a safety measure, just
in case I was interested in spades rather than clubs.
Perhaps 4♦ should show good clubs and 4♥ should
show good spades. 3♠ should show a lack of interest in
either contract.
KANTAR: 3♥. I hope partner interprets this as a 3♠
raise. We’ll see.
SHUSTER: 3♥. An easy one for a change. I have a
great hand for spades, so must cuebid. I would have
overcalled 1NT, not 2♣.
KLEINMAN: 3♥. Another good hand, a wonderful
dummy for partner in spades. “Aces are our friends”—
Nick Straguzzi.
WITTES: 4♠. I have a great hand in support of spades,
even if partner has very little other than a six card suit.
for a grand slam, I don’t have it. He can’t need only good
spades, or he’d have used Josephine [grand slam force]
directly over 4♣. I’d like to be able to open a Weak 2♠
with this hand. Yes, Marshall, you remember correctly
that I refused to play Weak Two’s with you in nickel-apoint
rubber bridge games at the Cavendish West 30 years
ago, but when I’m not playing for money, I’ll try anything—even
Weak Two’s.
WITTES: 6♠. This cannot be a grand slam force. Surely,
if that’s all partner needed to know, he could have bid it
earlier. I think partner is offering a choice of slams with
something like xx AKxxx AKQxxx —.
SHUMAN: 6♣. . . . cheapest bid except for “pass” which
is not possible. Torturous. I refuse to take a red-suit preference
. . . . let him pick his own slam. (Don’t I show xx,
x in the reds and non-solid spades by this bid, Marshall)
Perhaps so, but do you expect partner to make
whichever slam he chooses
KANTAR: Pass. I have alternately changed my answer
from 6♦ to pass four times with this ungodly nightmare
hand.
JONES: 6♣. Wonderful! My decent opening bid gets
reduced to essentially a 7 HCP hand with one bid by the
opponents. Now pard keeps forcng me. Pard has a massive
hand with something like 1-5-6-1, 1-5-7-0 or 2-5-6-0
shape. 5NT says “pick a slam.” 6♣ says, “No, you pick.”
Could 6♣ be interpreted as a grand try Unlikely. I have
made nonforcing, minimum bids the last two rounds. 6♣
implies that my spades are not sufficient to play opposite
a singleton and that I don’t have two diamonds. If pard
bids either 6♦ or 6♠, I will pass. If he bids 6♥ I will correct
to 6♠. By the way, I know the hand. It’s from the
Istanbul World Championships, and my hero passed 5NT,
which was the last making contract. I’m glad he was
right, but passing artificial forcing bids is not my cup of
tea. It’s bad for partnership confidence in the long run,
and isn’t guaranteed to be right anyway.
SHUSTER: 6♣. Take THAT, partner! Partner should
have the red suits. With spade support, she should have
cuebid or raised at some point. Partner ought to be able to
figure out which suit would make the best trump suit by
looking at her hand. 5NT is choice of slams. Strain
always has priority over level, and I strongly believe that
5NT means “pick a slam whenever that definition is so
much as vaguely possible. On this hand, it is pretty obviously
pick a slam, as partner has learned nothing new
about my hand since the last round of the auction, so if
GSF is what she had in mind, she should have bid it last
round.
It is obvious that partner wanted you to pick a slam.
But if he had ♦AKQJxx(x) he would have bid 6♦ at imps,
not caring if he missed a higher scoring major. After you
had bid spades three times, without solid diamonds, he
would have supported spades with two small, or at least a
doubleton honor. Even if partner has ♦AKQxxx, and
♥AKQxx, he has far less than a 36% chance to find a 3-3
break in either red suit because West should have an eight
card club suit, which doesn’t leave much room for other
cards. Even if one red suit breaks 3-3, that still doesn’t add
up to 12 tricks; you probably need a 3-3 break in both So
it is extremely unlikely that any slam will make. You
haven’t been doubled yet, and it is quite possible that East
won’t have a club to lead. If that is the case, you might be
able to give up a trick in each red suit and still take eleven
tricks at notrump.
I don’t consider a pass as a violation of partnership
confidence. You know that you and West probably have 12
clubs between you and that a slam is extremely unlikely to
make. Partner doesn’t know that. From his point of view,
you might have the singleton honor in diamonds or three
small hearts or a seventh spade, any of which would have
given you a fair play for a slam.
At the other table, North did not double 4♥ and made the normal lead of the diamond
jack. South won the king and switched to a spade but it was too late and E/W got out for
down one (-50). At our table, North made an aggressive double (after which East considered
re-doubling with his superb hand with all primes and Qx of trumps - but wisely
passed) and picked a different lead, his stiff club – looking to get an extra trump trick.
Declarer was now doomed to a multiple trick set. Even if he guessed to lead a diamond
towards the queen (not at all clear after the double), South would win and give his partner
a club ruff while requesting a spade switch. North would now lead a low spade. If declarer
won the spade ace and lead a diamond to the queen he would now have no quick entry
to dummy to enjoy the diamond ace in order to pitch his losing spade. A heart towards the
queen would be won by North and another low spade now would put South in for another
club ruff and a two trick set. Actually at the table, North blithely led the heart queen at trick
two (South pitching the spade queen) and suffered a three trick set for minus 500, losing 2
club ruffs, a diamond, a spade and 2 natural trump tricks (allowing N/W to get an uppercut).
The Golden Rules of
Opening Leads
By Julian Pottage
paperback, Published by Cassell
The Bridge Shelf: The Golden Rule(s)
(Exclusion Blackwood with a club void),
etc. It promises a good trump fit and a hand
strong enough to play at the 5- or 6-level no
matter what partner’s response is.
Perhaps the most important thing about
using Exclusion Blackwood is not to use it
– unless you have discussed what bids are
Exclusion Blackwood in your partnership.
The simplest rules for deciding what is
Exclusion Blackwood are those mentioned
above – a jump shift to the five-level in a
suit that can’t be trumps or a jump shift to
4S if hearts are trumps.
However some partnerships use
Exclusion Blackwood over other
sequences. Perhaps the most common is
after a 1NT or 2NT opener, followed by a
Texas transfer to four of a major and then if
responder bids a new suit (4S over hearts or
any 5-level new suit), it’s Exclusion
Blackwood.
Beyond these “common” instances of
Exclusion Blackwood, much partnership
discussion and agreement will be needed to
decide on other instances. One instance that
might bear discussion is: when is a secondround
(or later) jump shift to the 4 or 5-
level a splinter raise - and when is it
Exclusion Blackwood
Only partnership discussion and agreement
can answer this question. There are
experts in dedicated partnerships that use
Exclusion Blackwood in still other
sequences - a few of which utilize altogether
different responses.
What are the standard responses to
Exclusion Blackwood The easiest on
memory would be to use whatever regular
Blackwood structure your partnership plays
- but it is highly recommended that you use
Keycard Blackwood responses (1430
Roman Keycard responses are not recommended
for Exclusion).
Theoretically it seems best that you use
a version of Blackwood that has zero as its
first step (either aces or controls – your
choice).
Since you are usually starting
Exclusion Blackwood at a very high level,
you need to be able to show 0 controls with
the 1st step and 1 with the 2nd step.
Should you use queen-asking bids after
p a r t n e r’s response to Exclusion
Sometimes you’ll have a known 10+card
fit; in others, you will have the queen.
Playing queen-asking bids means you’ll
have to start king-asking one step higher.
Some pairs never queen-ask after their partner’s
response to Exclusion, they only ask
for specific kings. Others only ask for the
queen if they can do so below trumps at the
five-level and some insist on always using
queen-asking bids, regardless of the level.
It’s a partnership choice. If not queen-asking,
any non-trump suit bid after Exclusion
is king-asking - asking for that specific
In dedicated partnerships, other instances
of Exclusion are possible, especially with
minor suit fits. However, if your partnership
hasn’t specifically agreed on an
instance when Exclusion might apply, presume
it’s not Exclusion until discussed - as
a misunderstanding could be catastrophic!
CONCLUSION: In an attempt to make the
book accessible to more readers, the author
has kept bridge deals out of the book. Hard
to say if that makes sense. Frankly, the
book’s OK; nothing more; nothing less.
Grade it a B.
NEXT MONTH: I’ve finally unpacked the
bridge books I’ve received in the second
half of last year, and it’s time to plow
through them. Coming up: David Bird,
KLEINMAN: Pass. I’m not safe at the
three-level and game looks remote.
“Quacks are not our friends”—Danny
Kleinman.
WITTES: Pass.
Normally, I would swim a river of
crocodiles to at least make a game try
with a six card suit and 11 high card
points, but something smells rotten on
this hand. East made a vulnerable overcall
and was not supported. My QJ of
hearts are probably worthless; therefore I
have an 8-point hand with no shortness.
And on top of all this, most of the missing
diamond or club honors are probably
offside.
KANTAR: 3♠. I can’t get myself to
make a wimpy pass or a madness 4♠ bid.
SHUMAN: 3♥, intending to pass either
3NT or 4♠ from partner.
JONES: 3♥. My queen-jack of hearts
are likely wasted. However, pard may
have a hand such as Kxxx xx AKxx KJx
where game is good despite the heart situation.
Further, pard might have a heart
honor or a singleton (although the opponents’
actions would tend to indicate that
is likely not the case).
Some game try seems called for.
3♥ is an effort to make a game try and let
pard know that heart honors are valuable.
SHUSTER: 3♦. I must make some sort
of game try vulnerable at IMPs once
partner raises my 6-card suit.
It is true that this hand is quite
j u n k y, but give partner KQxx xxx
AK10xx x and we are on a finesse for
4♠—even without using any of my
rounded suit honors.
I think our best chance for game is
if partner has the right hand to bid 3NT
(holding something like KQx A x x
Q10xx K109, which would bring all my
soft values into play.
Perhaps the chance of finding part -
ner with the ace or king of hearts is too
remote to justify a further bid, but if you
do make another bid, surely your best
chance for game is in notrump, played by
partner, if he has the ace or king of
h e a rts. Isn’t bidding 3♥ your best
chance to get to notrump when partner
has a heart honor
Personalities at AV Bridge: Carol and Richard
Kemmerer raised three daughters while living in Lancaster
where Richard worked for Northrup and Lockheed. On
retirement they moved to Bear Valley Springs and enjoy
golf. After a break of some 30 years of bridge playing,
they resumed their interest in bridge about five years ago
and frequently act as directors at the Bear Valley Club.
Carol peruses her hobby of knitting and joins some of her
other knitting friends on cruises. We welcome the
Kemmerers to our club.
Nice to see Barbara Rinehart and hope she can join in
the regular games soon.
Keep good thoughts for Dodi Morton and wish her
return to bridge soon.
Glendale Regency Bridge Club
Well, the “Merry” season is over, and so is the college
football one with that big win by #1 USC at the Orange
Bowl in Miami. Having followed the team around the country
all season, Gerry Belcher was rewarded (luckily) by garnering
lottery entrance for that grand finale. He and Barbara
extended their celebrating with a flight to Chile for some
cruising down around Cape Horn and on up to Buenos
Aires. (You missed the rhythm of our winter raindrops,
Gerry…)
Margaret and Zeke Mataga spent Christmas with her
aunt in Las Vegas. Santa was kind, and Margaret brought
back some LV dollars to support her habit – no, no folks;
it’s shopping! And, of course, there’s her photography, and
some good samples of you Christmas-party models are on
display at the Regency. While we’re on the subject of MM,
let’s heap some more due credit on her for the tremendous
amount of time and hard work she expends on purchases,
sales and deliveries in support of our Unit’s various fundraising
drives. Would that we had a trophy, Margaret…
Vita Press flew out to Houston to join family members
for the holidays. She suffered no airport apoplexy – the
secret is to go early and return late. Steve Guerrero tended
to pre-Christmas activities here, and then took his language
skills to Spain for New Ye a r’s festivities. Tapas and
Sangria, anyone Glenn Durflinger also headed east
recently with special incentive: to visit his daughter is
South Carolina who introduced him to his newest grandchild.
The daughter of Diane and Rodger Thisdale brought
delight of another kind. She served as part of the Pasadena
Tournament of Roses Committee last year, and wound up
really getting things started. She was called upon sort of at
the last minute to fill in as one of the dancers who performed
prior to the parade. Talent and stamina to the rescue!
Mike Billow has reported that Millie Williams died in
early December. Millie had been a long-time member of
our Unit and served as a travel agent until she was sidelined
by poor health. With her eyesight failing, she retired and
moved down to the Palm Springs area. Our condolences to
her family and many friends. And to Brad Ward on the loss
of his father, it’s just never a good time.
Rumor has it that the January Unit Game proved
enjoyable with a pasta spread provided by Barbara
McKissick and game results provided by Frank Rubin’s
skill at the computer. Carolyn Cohen & Melina Stevens
shared the NS big “A” win with Sharlene Huang & Robert
C. Wang (the latter pair also placed B1). Ann Banta & Bob
Quarry were A3; and John Villalobos & Richard Plumer
captured A4 and B2. Contending winners EW were Esther
Tapelband & Timothy Stocks in A1; Tom Lolli & Bob
Tayrien A2; Bud Bates & Bruce Altshuler A3; Sharon Wolf
& Art Chacanias A4 and C1; and Leon Alexander & Tom
Sawyer C2. Congratulations to the winners, and a special
invitation to all you strivers to come join us “next time” on
February 12, as well as “before” and “after.”
Take care and everyone continue to enjoy…
meeting] will be the first Monday in March unlike the normal
schedule.)
CONDOLENCES & GET WELL: Two of the nicest
ladies in our club have passed away, Pat Aumann and
Maureen Broscow. Both ladies loved the game and were a
pleasure. We will miss them. We also lost Robert Johnson
and Barbara Frischkorn lost her son. The club members
extend their sympathies to all their families and friends. We
hear that Dottie Anderson is having vision problem. Our
hearts go out to you and hope things improve and we see
you back at the bridge table.
NEWS OF OUR MEMBERS: The tragic Tsunami

FEBRUARY, 2005 THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BRIDGE NEWS PAGE 7
touched one of our members, Louise Sperr, who was visiting
Thailand when it struck. Her worried partner and
friends were unsuccessful calling her to assure her safety
but they were very happy to see her back at the club.
Fortunately, she was touring inland Thailand and she came
home unharmed but we bet she saw many sad aftermath
sights. Good to have you back! Palm Springs Knockout
winners were Steve Sulzby’s team of B. Garrett, S. Auhill
& M. Leung. Steve ranked nationally as a Club Master in
the Mini-McKenney race. Good work.
DID YOU KNOW We notice players who are supposed
to be dummy playing the hand for the declarer – and
not just newer players! The rule says “Dummy takes no
active part in the play of the hand. Whenever it is dummy’s
turn to play, the declarer must say which of dummy’s cards
is to be played… (as long as it is legal)... If when calling for
a card the declarer specifies the suit only, dummy is to play
the lowest card of that suit.” I have seen dummy play a card
– without declarer calling for it – when dummy could not
follow suit! Do be careful. I know some of you are sure
you’re better players than your partner but when you are
dummy…be dummy. There can be partial board penalty
for not being a good dummy.
While searching for this rule on the Internet, I came
across something I had never heard of and we bet you
haven’t either. It’s called The Beer Card which is the Seven
of Diamonds. “It is not part of the official rules of Bridge,
but there is a tradition among some players that if the
declarer succeeds in making the contract and wins the last
trick with the Seven of Diamonds, dummy must buy the
declarer a beer of the declarer’s choice. In the same way, if
the opponents defeat the contract and one of them wins the
last trick with the Seven of Diamonds, the opponent who
wins the last trick is bought a beer by the other opponent.”
That must hark back to the days when there were ashtrays
on every table, don’t you think
Reminder: News can be emailed to me at golfgal@charter.net
or put a note in the envelope on the Unit
bulletin board.
Unit Game – 1/30 (one week early)
San Marino Bridge Club
1800 Huntington Dr., San Marino
HAPPY NEW YEAR one and all. As I write this, we
are actually into the third dry day in a row, and I’m really
enjoying the sun.
Last Sunday was our fist Unit Game of the new year.
Lasagnas and salads brought by Peter and Frances were
thoroughly enjoyed by all, and the dessert table didn’t do
too badly either. Attendance was a little low, but we thank
those of you who did brave the elements to be there. Janet
Ju and George Wang took first in A with an exceptional
68.3%. Jeff and CC Fang came in second with a nevershabby
62.5%. Millie Williamson and Bernie Mateer were
third, as well as first in B. Second in B were Gitta Earll and
Eli Wang, our first in C pair. Susan Rhoades and Brad
Beland rounded out the B’s. Second and third in C were
Judie and John Barrow and Manda and A J Joshi, respectively.
The next Unit game, as is listed above, is one week
early, January 30, so as not to compete with the Super Bowl
game.
The next game after that is our Election Party. This is
always an excellent day, with a pairs game in the afternoon
and Swiss Teams in the evening. The $30 fee entitles one
to both games and a wonderful dinner in between. The date
is March 6, the place is the Holiday Inn in Monrovia, and
the tickets can be bought from any board member. The
most important business to be conducted at that time will be
the election of new board members. The six names on the
slate are Betty Jackson, Dick Loggins, and Peter Szecsi,
returning members, and Mark Hartzell, Cathy Martin, and
Marie Nimmrich, new candidates. As per Article III,
Section C of the Unit By-Laws, “Additional nominations
may be made by the membership, but such nominations
must be in writing, signed by at least ten (10) members, and
must be mailed to the Secretary of the Unit within ten (10)
days after giving notice as provided in 2. Above.” This section
states, “The names of the persons nominated as
Directors by the Nominating Committee shall be make
known to the members at least (20) twenty days prior to the
election date.”
The three members who are leaving the Board are
Joannie Mesias, Bob Malouf, and Wayne Dockery. We
wish to acknowledge the many hours of service given by
these three, and thank them so much for all their help.
We have two new members and one transfer to welcome.
John Clay and Janet Nugent are new, and Jeanne
Nichols has transferred from the West LA Unit. Great to
have you with us! As for this month’s milestones: new
Club Master is Mary Froede, Section Master is Nancy
Harwich, Regional Master is Sofia Pineda, and Silver Life
Master goes to Robert Wang. Also, as of the end of
December, and hot off the presses, we have word that Ann
McClelland had reached Life Master on the 11th and
Bronze Life Master on the 14th. WAY TO GO TO YOU
ALL!
Kudos also go to our Unit. The latest figures show
that we are first in new member gains with a 9.67%. We are
also the unit with the lowest average member age at 61.18
years. I want to see all of our “youthful exuberance” portrayed
at all times.
There are quite a few events coming up that might be
of interest to you. The Anaheim Regional will take place
January 31 to February 6 at the Sheraton Anaheim. At the
San Marino Bridge Club, club championships are scheduled
for Valentines Day, February 14 and February 23. The
LA Winter Regional is February 21-27 at the Los Hilton
Hotel. On March 7 and March 9 there will be StaC games
for our district with silver points awarded at San Marino.
Another item give to me just the other day was the
amazing result that Unit 559 had at the North American
Open Pairs finals. Bob Johnson and Joe Viola came in first
in A. Kyle and Melissa Mattes were first in B, and Robert
Wang and Shiu-Ming Huang were second. Victor Kam and
James Berglund were first in C. Kathy Helber and Penny
Barbieri were second, and Ann McClelland and Harry
Torossian and Roland and Sofia Pineda tied for third and
fourth. The first-place pairs all qualified to play in this
event at the Nationals in Pittsburgh, with various degrees of
monetary assistance from ACBL. We congratulate you all
and are EXTREMELY proud.
On December 13-19, the Palm Springs Regional took
place. A lot of our members traveled there and did quite
well. Among the first place winners was Fred Theurkauf.
second place finishers included Fred and Herman Helber,
Kyle and Melissa Mattes, and Jeanette Deverian and Charo
Holdo. Third place finishes went to Jeanne Dea and Milt
Kalimans, Karen Arase and Connie De Rosa, Connie and
June Harwell, and Peter Szecsi and Frances Katz, who
played with our former members Phil and Adele Perlman.
The team of Jeanne Dea, Peter Jager, Jake Frenkel, and
Miriam Harrington came in 7th out of over 45 pairs in the
Sunday Swiss. Among the big total point winners as of
Saturday were Peter Schneider with 47.31 points and Kyle
and Melissa Mattes with 31.83 points.
Hope your 2005 is going well in bridge and otherwise…
Unit Game Sun., 2/13
Dinner-6:30 P.M. Game-7:00
As the old joke goes, there’s some good news and
some bad news this month. Our move to our nice new facility
in Glendora is complete. Players who have come out to
try the games have generally been pleased with the well-lit,
comfortable playing area. However, attendance remains
below hoped-for levels. The board is starting a telephone
tree to try to pair up players who have stopped playing
because they lack regular partners. We hope this will succeed
in getting out some players who haven’t been playing
recently, which in turn will make the games larger and more
fun.
We are also beginning a series of free lessons for
beginning and rusty lapsed players. Lessons are scheduled
for Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:15, before the regular
7:00 games. Intermediate lessons will also be offered if
players express interest. If anyone wishes further information,
they may email me at vsartor77@aol.com.
In competitive results, the biggest recent news was
provided by Penny Barbieri and Cathy Helber, who finished
2nd in District 23 in Class C of the North American
Pairs. They will represent the district in the nationals in
Pittsburg. (First prize was a week in Pittsburg. Second place
finishers have to spend two weeks.) Congratulations and
good luck, ladies.
Top recent local results included 70%+ games by
Hans Hehnke, Dave Ruoff, Cordell Goode, Lary Alba,
Marc Leventhal, Sandy Barnes, and Vic Sartor. Winners of
the January unit game were Bill Papa and Lulu Minter.
Our Holiday Party held at the Radisson Hotel on
December 19th was very well attended. In fact, we had
such a successful turnout that we may have been just a tad
too crowded. However, food was plentiful, bridge was
plentiful and a good time was had. We were fortunate
enough to have two sections as many non-life masters
attended. In the afternoon session, Shelly Linnick and Sam
Faye were first NS and Joyce Hart and Fran Mink won EW.
The life master and above section was won by Joan Rubin
and Gil Stinebaugh playing North/South while Alan Haim
and Gary Moore won EW. In the evening, Ed Berlinger and
Klara Mocsary won NS in the non life master section, while
Judith Butler and Lois Sweet won EW. The life master section
NS winners were won by Barbara Liederman and Jean
Sparks, and repeating their afternoon accomplishment winning
EW were Alan Haim and Gary Moore. Jack Rubin,
Joan’s husband, kindly volunteered to take photos of the
p a r t y, and they may be viewed at our web site at
tarzanabridgeacademy.com. Thank you, Jack, that was
very nice of you to give up your time. Also I would like to
thank Denny Seltzer for all his hard work. It is no easy feat
to direct two sessions with two sections, and he accomplished
this as if it was easy peasy. Our next Unit Game we
will be held at the Bridge Academy on Sunday, February
13. It is our annual Valentine’s Day celebration, so come
and play with your favorite Valentine, or your favorite
friend, or your favorite partner. But come and have fun.
The month of December’s masterpoint winners at the
Bridge Academy was led by Dick Lum, closely followed by
Ellen Anten, Joan Rubin, Gilbert Stinebaugh and Tom
Wylie. Rounding out the top ten is Feddie Straus, Lynda
Ullman, Judith Rosentiel, Leda Danzig and Susan Somogyi. At the Valencia Bridge Club,
the leaders in December were Richard Plotin, Betty Pavey, Paul Mostman and Kathy
Swaine. The after Holiday Party that was held in Valencia garnered a tie for lst overall
between Kathy Swaine and her partner Anna Schmidt, and Marlene and David Gasper. Just
before the party, Kathy went down to Palm Springs on Saturday with Rand Pinksy, and
together with David and Marlene Gasper came in lst overall in the knockouts.
Well, the month of January brought us record rains causing flooding in some areas,
and gridlock on the freeways, but undaunted our bridge players came out to play. After all
what else is there to do on a rainy day Anyway, not to sound like a broken record, but this
is your column, so remember the little brown envelope in the club, and drop me a note
about what’s going on so we can all enjoy. Have a happy!!!
The December 15 Club Championship was won by Dick Cheng /Fran Weston in flight A
with Art Graybill/Bob Van Lone leading the way in both Flights B and C.
GUV Award
Although my sister Emily Rankin resides in upstate New York, she and husband Jon
became honorary TSB Unit members the last two winters. They were snowbirds staying
with Jan and I. As new players they played in many 199er and regular stratified games at
the SBBC. Being honorary TSB unit members her tale of woe from a Regional in
Saratoga, NY is eligible to be included for consideration as a GUV Award. I’m just not too
sure whom to give the award to.
Emily and Jon were on a KO team playing in a lower masterpoint bracket consisting
of Flight C players. They were ahead by double digit IMPs in their match at halftime. The
match was being played in the morning and this necessitated playing it in an area of the
hotel which had a curtain across the entryway with a lamp standard next to it. Starting the
second half a renowned Female Bridge star entered through this curtain in a wheelchair and
accidentally knocked over the lamp. The lamp fell toward the table my sister was at and
conked an opponent knocking her into dreamland for a short while. A few minutes later
the opponent appeared to have sufficiently recovered to continue. However the hotel
insisted she go for a medical check. So the directors in attendance brought in a pair to substitute.
As it turned out this substitute pair turned the match around for the opponent’s team
and they won the match. Maybe the GUV award should go to the directors since the substitute
pair consisted of two Flight A players.
Hi. New Years resolutions— #1) catching a mistake before you do it is easier then
defending it later. #2) drive partner crazy, when they make a mistake smile and wink. #3)
when an opponent fixes you, instead of gnashing your teeth (that leads to expensive dental
bills), fondly remember the last time you fixed someone. #4) remember whatever terrible
happens at the table will make a great story later. #5) when a herd of cats comes running
at you, protect the delete button.
The Unit elected its new officers the quick way. The old officers tried to find someone
to run against them— proving we didn’t elect a stupid unit board. All you can say to
our officers - better luck next time. Opening the envelope she now announces “And your
new Unit Officials are:” President Howard Einberg, V.P. Sam Haveson, Secretary Roger
Clough, Treasurer Fred Mautner, Unit columnist, sorry Jen and Jan, its still moi.
I’d like to thank Michael Halberstad for e-mailing me news (someone out there is
reading my column). His partner Ronnie Morris made Life Master the hard way at the
Palm Springs Regional. On Friday, Ronnie and Michael (C players) won the AM session
with a 68.33% game getting 5.48 gold, enough to put Ronnie over the top. Ronnie won
all of his gold in pair events. And Michael for your e-mail, I bestow upon you a shorter
name, feel free to remove any letters you want from your name.
The Unit Championship on Jan. 13th was won by Sam Haverson and Chuck Fonarow
with a 72% game, 2nd overall were Aram Bedros and Art Zail with a 70% game. Flight
B winners-Angelica Hederer and Anita Levine. C: Betty Medof and Mary Louise Shnier.
Other 70% games were Adi Arieli and David Segal, James Clarkson and Pete Knee (both
of these games gotten during the STAC) Sylvia Shallon and Charles Wright Jr., and on the
last day of the year, Margie Enders and Justin Graf. Janice Goldstein came back from a
cruise having had an 82% game!
Now for a quick peak at the clubs
Barrington- From her renovated digs, E’Anne announced Adrienne Green is her new
partner. There will be a new Thursday night Team game starting Feb. 10th at 7:15 with
pizza and party to celebrate the new session.
BHBC - Club Champs Afternoon- A: Mary Jane Farell and Fred Mautner, B: Alice
Davidson and Harold Lapidus, C: Shirley and Leonard Hilborne. Eve- A Ronda Platt and
Bill Weingarden, B: Nancy Heck and Karen Byrd, C: Joana Ogner and Al Frankin. Get
your team ready for the regional play in the Wed Eve. Team game Feb. 16 at 7:15 Feb. 7th
is Monday Morning with Mary Jane.
Cyma’s Club - Club Champs A&B: Leila Newman and Nora Weckler, C: Margarete
Gentschein and Kelly Lightner. 12/21 Unit game - A: Lorraine Bagdasarian and Bert
Koslen, B&C: Barry and Rachel Simon. Camile Harouche back after a brief hospitalization.
Candy’s Club - My parents were born on Feb. 22nd so that’s the date this month for
the February Birthday Party. Tues. Aft. At 12:30, I will be holding my monthly team game
and supper on that same day. That is on a new night— Tuesday, but same time, supper
7:00, and Game at 7:30.
Our condolences to Delia Juul-Dan on the loss of her daughter. With Brian by her
side and all her bridge friends, we hope to make this sad time for her easier.
Thoughts go out to the family and friends of Fran Schaen who died recently in Palm
Springs.
A short month, but jam-packed with special days, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day,
President’s Day and the not so well publicized National Insanity Day (19th) and National
Obnoxious Day (24th). Also, it’s National Chocolate Appreciation Month. So go and
appreciate. I’ll see you next month.
Office (310) 3138-2270; email ALACBU23@ aol.com
Conventions: All conventions on the ACBL General Convention Chart are approved for any event at this tournament.
For pair and team events, the mid-chart conventions for defense over notrump opening or overcalls are
allowed. Mid-chart conventions, for which the ACBL has published approved defenses, may be used ONLY in the
top bracket of the KO events, and then ONLY if NO team in the bracket averages fewer than 1500 master-points. Any
pair using mid-chart conventions is responsible for having the published defenses at the table.
Website: Check at the District website: www.acbldistrict23.org for tournament information and results.
Team Events: For 3-session K.O., a playoff for 3 rd & 4 th is expected if eight (8) or more teams are in a bracket.
This will allow teams that enter this event to win maximum number of masterpoints. Every effort will be made to
split brackets at logical masterpoint breaks, even if there are uneven number of teams in each bracket. If there is only
one bracket, handicapping will be provided with a maximum of 2 IMPs per board.
Unless noted otherwise, all flighted and stratified events are divided:
0-750, 750-2000, 2000++. 299er Pairs: as attendance warrants.
