The <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Death</strong><br />
had long devastated <strong>the</strong> country.<br />
No pestilence had ever been so fatal,<br />
or so hideous.<br />
Blood was its Avatar<br />
and its seal.<br />
There were sharp pains,<br />
sudden dizziness,<br />
and <strong>the</strong>n pr<strong>of</strong>use bleeding.<br />
The scarlet stains<br />
upon <strong>the</strong> body<br />
and especially<br />
upon <strong>the</strong> face<br />
shut <strong>the</strong> victims out<br />
from <strong>the</strong> aid<br />
and sympathy<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fellow-men.<br />
The whole progress<br />
and termination<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> disease,<br />
were <strong>the</strong> incidents<br />
<strong>of</strong> half one hour.<br />

A strong and l<strong>of</strong>ty wall<br />

<strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fire-light<br />
that streamed through <strong>the</strong> blood-tinted panes,<br />

and produced so wild a look<br />
upon <strong>the</strong> countenances <strong>of</strong> those who entered,<br />
that none were bold enough<br />
to set foot<br />
within its precincts<br />
And it was in <strong>the</strong> black chamber<br />
that <strong>the</strong>re stood,<br />
to and fro<br />
with a dull,<br />
heavy,<br />
A gigantic clock <strong>of</strong> ebony.<br />
Its pendulum swung<br />
monotonous clang; and when <strong>the</strong> minute-hand made <strong>the</strong><br />
circuit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> face, and <strong>the</strong> hour was to be stricken, <strong>the</strong>re<br />
came from <strong>the</strong> brazen lungs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clock a sound which<br />
was clear and loud and deep and exceedingly musical,<br />
but <strong>of</strong> so peculiar a note and emphasis that, at each<br />
lapse <strong>of</strong> an hour, <strong>the</strong> musicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orchestra were<br />
constrained to pause, momentarily, in <strong>the</strong>ir performance,<br />
to hearken to <strong>the</strong> sound; and <strong>the</strong> waltzers ceased <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

gay company;<br />
SILENCE.<br />
PROSPERO:<br />
and, while <strong>the</strong> chimes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clock yet rang, it was<br />
observed that <strong>the</strong> giddiest grew pale, and <strong>the</strong> more aged<br />
and sedate passed <strong>the</strong>ir hands over <strong>the</strong>ir brows as if in<br />
confused reverie or meditation. But when <strong>the</strong> echoes had<br />
fully ceased, a light laughter at once pervaded <strong>the</strong><br />
assembly;

<strong>the</strong> musicians looked at each o<strong>the</strong>r and smiled as if at<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own nervousness and folly, and made whispering<br />
vows, each to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, that <strong>the</strong> next chiming <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clock<br />
should produce in <strong>the</strong>m no similar emotion; but <strong>the</strong>n, after<br />
<strong>the</strong> lapse <strong>of</strong> sixty minutes, (which embrace three<br />
thousand and six hundred seconds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Time that flies,)<br />
<strong>the</strong>re strikes <strong>the</strong> ebony clock which stands in <strong>the</strong> hall <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> velvet.<br />
SILENCE.<br />
PROSPERO:<br />
And <strong>the</strong>n, for a moment, all is still, and all is silent save<br />
<strong>the</strong> voice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clock. The dreams are stiff-frozen as <strong>the</strong>y<br />
stand. But <strong>the</strong> echoes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chime die away -- <strong>the</strong>y have<br />
endured but an instant -- and a light, half-subdued<br />
laughter floats after <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>y depart.<br />

ere a decided movement had been made to arrest him.<br />
It was <strong>the</strong>n that<br />
Prince Prospero,<br />
maddening with rage<br />
and <strong>the</strong> shame <strong>of</strong> his own<br />
momentary cowardice,<br />
Bore al<strong>of</strong>t<br />
A drawn dagger<br />
And rushed<br />
through <strong>the</strong> six chambers,<br />
while none followed<br />
on account <strong>of</strong> a<br />
deadly terror<br />
that had seized upon all.<br />
The Masked Figure<br />
having attained <strong>the</strong> extremity<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Black Chamber,<br />
stood erect and motionless<br />
within <strong>the</strong> shadow<br />
ACTOR 2, 3 AND 4: <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ebony clock.

THE MASKED FIGURE TURNS SUDDENLY ON THE PRINCE. THE<br />
LIGHT SUDDENLY CHANGES TO BLOOD RED.<br />
THE PRINCE GASPS WITH A SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH. THE<br />
DAGGER FALLS TO THE FLOOR.<br />
ACTOR 3:<br />
The dagger dropped<br />
THE PRINCE SLUMPS TO THE GROUND.<br />

And beside it<br />
prostrate in death<br />
<strong>the</strong> Prince Prospero.<br />
SILENCE. THE ACTORS RECOIL IN HORROR.<br />

Summoning <strong>the</strong> wild courage<br />
Of despair,<br />
A throng <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> revellers<br />
Threw <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
Into <strong>the</strong> black chamber,<br />
and seizing <strong>the</strong> mummer,<br />
gasped<br />
in unutterable horror<br />
at finding <strong>the</strong><br />
grave-cerements<br />
and corpse-like mask<br />
untenanted by any tangible form.<br />
THE FIGURE HAS VANISHED..<br />
ACTOR 2:<br />
ACTOR 3:<br />
ACTOR 4:<br />
And now <strong>the</strong> revellers<br />
each in turn<br />
acknowledged <strong>the</strong> true identity

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir revel,<br />
and died<br />
each in <strong>the</strong> despairing posture<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fall.<br />
And <strong>the</strong> life<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ebony clock<br />
went out<br />
with that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last.<br />
And <strong>the</strong> flames expired.<br />
And Darkness<br />
and Decay<br />
THE MASKED FIGURES RE-APPEARS AT THE BACK OF THE<br />
STAGE BATHED IN A RED GLOW.<br />
THE ACTORS IN TURN SLIP TO THE FLOOR.<br />
ACTOR 2:<br />
ACTOR 3:<br />
ACTOR 4:<br />
and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Death</strong><br />
held illimitable dominion<br />
over all.<br />
THE MASKED FIGURE STANDS SILENT AND STILL OVER THE<br />
BODIES ON THE STAGE.<br />
THE LIGHTS SLOWLY FADE.
