WESTMATIC CORPORATION IS
HEADQUARTERED IN Sweden, but
its North American headquarters are
located in Buffalo, NY. It’s a busy
office. Starting in 2005, President of NA, Robert
Sundell built it from the ground up. From two bus
wash machines in its first year, Westmatic is now
selling dozens, and expects to hit annual sales of
over 50 within the next few years. Given their
cutting edge Scandinavian design, which is both
less expensive and greener than the competition, it’s
not hard to see why their bus wash and truck wash
systems have caught on among business owners all
over the country.
There were some setbacks along the way, but the
company has stayed true to its vision and trusted its
products. Sundell is passionate about local supply,
working closely with Zeller Electric and Niagara
Frontier Custom Fabrication. Manufacturing in NA
began in 2009. Now, they’re fully “Buy America”

compliant, have strong relationships with
local vendors, and are headed for their
best year ever.
“It’s working out really well for us so
far,” says Sundell with both pride and
relief. “It’s really starting to take off.”
LEANEST, MEANEST, GREENEST
“We are definitely the greenest vehicle
wash system company out there,” says
Sundell. “We have the greenest bus
washes and truck washes.”
In Sweden, where Sundell learned
his trade, there’s strict regulation
about collecting and purifying
runoff from industrial washes. This
spurred innovation into low-usage,
cost-effective technologies, resulting
in machines that use nearly half the
water, chemical and electricity of

Westmatic’s competitors in North
America. Operating costs are also
nearly half of what they’d be for
conventional machines.
Sustainable water policy is still in
its infancy in the U.S., so together
with their patented water purification
system, Westmatic is ten or fifteen
years ahead of the industry, in
Sundell’s estimation. “Changing the
regulation, making it mandatory to
have a wash water purifying system,
that would be big for Westmatic NA,
and the environment as well” he says.
“That’s going to take time. We think
it’s definitely going to happen – it’s
just when it’s going to happen, really.”
Westmatic also offers a unique
self-service system called the Wash
Control 3000, which allows their

customers to monitor every factor at play, including how much water, electricity, and
chemicals are passing through the unit. The customer designates which features are
active in the wash process. In turn, he/she designates the cost per wash. The Wash
Control 3000 will connect to the customers ERP system for invoices. According to
Sundell, “no one else has even thought about that in North America.”
THROUGH A GLASS BRIGHTLY
When it comes to company operations, Sundell says that it’s all about organization.
“We’re really trying to run things the Scandinavian way,” he explains. This means,
among other things, a disciplined but comfortable staff and an extremely clean
work environment – “you could eat off the floor of the factory,” he says.

The company’s relative youth has made for an energetic
company culture and a dedicated staff of young
professionals willing to grow and innovate together.
That’s why Westmatic has an exciting in-house design
team that has met significant challenges in the industry.
Before they came along, mirrors and windows were
often broken during the bus washing procedure, which
led to waste, headaches, and added expense for the
consumer. Moreover,

and effectively. They were able to design a system
in-house with precision control that can detect where
the vehicle’s mirrors and racks are located – and wash
them with special care.
WHAT RECESSION
“We’re starting to have quite a few references,” says
Sundell with Nordic modesty. Their references are
building up because they’re able to provide a superior
product in a tough economic climate – and the
numbers don’t lie. Last year’s sales were up by 25
percent, and according to projections, they’re likely to
double their revenue by the end of 2012.

Sundell credits the recent success to their sales and marketing team. Sales
manager Ed Evans and transit sales agent Chuck Techner have led with impressive
gains and are on track for a blockbuster year.
The brain trust of the operation is Rick Stein, affectionately dubbed the “Wash
Wizard” by his co-workers. The new strategies he’ll be overseeing include a
re-emphasis on in-house design and engineering. Increasing efficiency, safety and
reliability in their large vehicle wash systems.
