The principal shall hold all students accountable for infractions of school system or local school<br />

rules. The principal shall investigate instances of alleged misconduct brought to his attention<br />

and endeavor, within reason, to hear every side of the controversy. The student shall be<br />

confronted with the allegations and be given an opportunity to present his version of the facts.<br />

Parent Responsibilities<br />

Parents have the responsibility to provide a home atmosphere that enhances the total<br />

development of the child. Parents should:<br />

Ensure that the student attends school regularly.<br />

Know school system and local school policies, rules and regulations.<br />

Attend scheduled parent-teacher conferences.<br />

Support the school’s disciplinary efforts.<br />

Contact school officials whenever the need arises.<br />

Sign Student/Parent Handbook Acknowledgment Form (see pg. 93)<br />

Parents and students in <strong>Stokes</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> have the right to know the professional<br />

qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct their child. Federal law allows parents to<br />

ask for certain information about their child’s classroom teachers, and requires the school system<br />

to give parents this information in a timely manner, when requested. Specifically, parents have<br />

the right to ask for the following information about each of their children’s classroom<br />

teachers/teacher assistants:<br />

Definitions<br />

Whether North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has licensed or qualified the<br />

teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.<br />

Whether North Carolina Department of Public Instruction decided that the teacher can<br />

teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because<br />

of special circumstances.<br />

The teacher’s college major, whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the<br />

subject of the degrees.<br />

Whether any teachers’ assistants or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your<br />

child and, if they do, their qualifications.<br />

Alternative Learning Program - any program designed by the Board to serve those students at<br />

risk of truancy, academic failure, behavior problems, and/or dropping out of school<br />

Arson - the intentional burning or attempt to burn any building, structure, or property<br />

Assault - an offer to do physical violence to another without striking, as well as the infliction of<br />

blows or any offensive touching, without the consent of the person to whom the offer of violence<br />

is made or who receives the blows or offensive touching<br />

Assistant - the paraprofessional employed by the local Board of Education to assist the teacher<br />

Board - the <strong>Stokes</strong> <strong>County</strong> Board of Education<br />
