It does not seem possible that May has arrived and this is the second last newsletter of
the 2010-2011 school year. The year seems to have sped by very quickly. We have had
a positive year and appreciate the patience and understanding of the staff, students and
parents as our renovation proceeded and was completed. If you have not had an opportunity
to come and see the “new Paterson”, you are welcome to take some time and visit.
We would like to congratulate all the students on their many accomplishments throughout
this past year, most recently, the choirs, bands and handbell ringers for their participation
and excellent showings in the Kiwanis Music and Speech Arts Festival; the Select Choir
for their first place showing at the Provincial Music Festival; the grade 6 choir for
competing in the Provincial Music Festival; the students who competed in the Paterson
Track Meet; and all the students who had their art work displayed at Arts Alive.
Exams are scheduled for May and June and other activities have been booked. These
include the Spring concert at the U of L on the evening of 17 May; the regular spring
dance on Friday 27 May from noon to 2:00 PM; the Movie Mill incentive from the fundraiser
on the morning of 10 June; an additional dance earned from the fundraiser on
Thursday, 16 May from 3:00 – 4:30; and the whole school swimming party on the
afternoon of 21 June.
There will be some grade 8 activities planned for our current grade 8 students as they
move to high school. Teachers will be sending information, dates and times for these
activities home with the students. Theses last three years have been years of change,
growth, new friendships and new insights for them. We wish them every success in high
school and in the future.
We hope the weather complies for the rest of the school year so that our students can
enjoy some outdoor activities.

Healthy Futures
Stress Awareness
Stress is a normal part of life. We all experience
it from time to time, but it’s what we do about it
that makes the difference. Here are some tips
for improving your mental health:
Take care of yourself physically: put some
activity into your day, even a walk can help
clear your head. Eat healthy foods and
drink plenty of water.
Breathe and relax: when you feel stressed,
slow it down, close your eyes and focus on
your breathing. Each time you breathe out,
relax your body. Do this for a few minutes
until you feel calm and relaxed.
Stay connected: Spend time in caring and
supportive relationships with family and
friends.
Develop or improve your skills: Learn to prioritize,
deal with conflict, communicate assertively,
and don’t sweat the small stuff.
Which Helmet
Why helmets are important
For many recreational activities, wearing a helmet
can reduce the risk of a serious head injury and
even save your life.
How can a helmet protect my head
During a fall or collision, most of the impact energy
is absorbed by the helmet, rather than your
head and brain.
Are all helmets the same
No. There are different helmets for different activities.
Each type of helmet is made to protect
your head from the impacts common to that particular
activity or sport – bike helmets are not the
same as hockey helmets. Be sure to wear a helmet
that is appropriate for the particular activity
you’re involved in. Some helmets may not protect
your head as effectively. To find out which helmet
to use go to: www.thinkfirst.ca/safetyinfo.aspx
World No Tobacco Day – May 31
Smoke free environments like homes and vehicles
are important for the health of children.
Growing up in a smoke free environment reduces
the risk of cancers and respiratory diseases
such as asthma and lung infections.
These are many health benefits children can
experience by growing up in smoke free world.
Growing up smoke free spaces also goes a long
way in preventing children from becoming
tobacco users themselves (Regardless of
whether their parents or guardians smoke).
On World No Tobacco Day, May 31, consider or
making your home and vehicles smoke free.
Three Underrated Foods
Sunflower seeds. Sunflower seeds are rarely in
the spotlight. That’s a shame, because sunflower
seeds are as good as most nuts...and they’re
cheaper. For a snack, buy sunflower seeds in the
shell. For tossing on salads or yogurt, buy them
unsalted and shell-free. Roast them for richer flavor.
Plain yogurt. Plain yogurt has a tartness that’s
a perfect match for the natural sweetness of berries,
bananas, or peaches AND it has more protein,
potassium, calcium, zinc, and B vitamins
than sweet yogurt. Add a dash of vanilla for even
more flavor.
Watermelon. Two cups of watermelon has 38
percent of a day’s vitamin C and 32 percent of a
day’s vitamin A for only 85 fat-free, salt-free
calories. Bonus: watermelon is one of the fruits
with the fewest pesticide residues.

Badminton
Our badminton season has come to an end. Our school competed in the Lethbridge
Schools Athletic Association Badminton Championships and did very well. It is important
to understand that in grade 6 our teams compete against 4 other schools and our grade 7
and 8’s compete against 6 other schools. Congratulations to all players and coaches on
their success. The following are the results of the LSAA badminton tournament.
Grade 6 Girls – 1 st Place
Grade 7 Boys – 1 st Place
Grade 7 Girls – 1 st Place
Grade 8 Boys – 2 nd Place
Grade 8 Girls – 2 nd Place
I would also like to thank all of our coaches on an excellent season.
Track and Field
Our students and phys-ed staff have been working very hard qualifying for our school
track and field meet. The weather did not cooperate in the beginning making it very
difficult to put things together this year. Through hard work and commitment we did it. It
is the first year that we were able to host our track and field meet at the U of L Stadium.
It is a great facility. We are very lucky.
The LSAA track and field meet is on May 26 th at the U of L stadium. Students who have
qualified for that meet will get extra information closer to the date.
