Morning session - driving efficiency
Sustainable dairy farms must become increasingly
efficient and constantly strive to improve
performance. The first session focuses on the
business inside the farm gate.
Five keys to reproductive success - Part 1
Paul Fricke, Professor of Dairy Science and
Extension Specialist in Dairy Cattle Reproduction
at the University of Wisconsin is acknowledged as
one of the world’s leading authorities on getting
cows back in calf. He will share his experiences and
challenge delegates to critically appraise fertility
management on their farms. In the first part of his
presentation he will focus on the management of
artificial insemination.
Driving efficiency from different systems
Welsh farmer Will Pritchard is uniquely placed
to comment on the pros and cons of different
management systems as he runs three herds under
totally different approaches. A herd of 300 cows
is run under an intensive regime; another of 200
cows is managed under an autumn block calving
approach while the final herd of 550 cows is on a
spring block calving system. He is currently in the
process of setting up a second spring calving herd.
He will compare and contrast the three systems
and give his view on their prospects.
20:40 Conference Agenda
Afternoon session - prospects for prices
Milk and input prices have dominated the
headlines this year and the summer has seen
major developments so the second session will
look at the current and future situation.
What are the global and domestic
prospects for milk
Tom Campbell is a Farmer Director of First
Milk, running a herd of 90 cows in West
Kilbride, Ayrshire. He will provide an overview
of the milk markets and suggest where
opportunities may exist and how the industry
will need to evolve to grasp them.
Where next for input costs
Responsibility for the Promar Cost Tracker gives
Derek Gardner, National Dairy Consultant for
Promar International a unique insight into dairy
farm costs of production. He will explore why
variation in dairy farm profitability is due more
to the range in costs of production than the
milk price.
Five keys to reproductive success – Part 2
In the second part of his presentation, Paul
Fricke will explore the importance of clear
strategies to drive high levels of reproductive
performance including strategies to breed cows
quickly, the identification of non-pregnant cows
and aggressively rebreeding non-pregnant cows.
Discussion
The panel discussion will be your chance to
develop any of the ideas and comments raised
by the speakers and to get answers to your
