Assessment
Assessment forms a key element during every phase of
the learning cycle. Assessment enables practitioners to:
‣ identify a learner’s level in order to select the right
programme. This is initial assessment;
‣ establish a starting point for learning. This is
sometimes called diagnostic assessment;
‣ monitor progress and identify next steps in planning
learning, termed formative assessment;
‣ recognise and record achievements, called
summative assessment.
