Doing R&D or Innovation national agencies co-ordinate their “technology foresight”
programmes
Project funded by DG Research in the framework of the ERA-NET scheme:

Coordination of national R&D programmes with ultimate objective the design and
implementation of joint trans-national R&D programmes
“Foresight” aims at identifying possible technological futures and defining
strategies to achieve them
ForSociety objectives -
Proposal on ICT and e-Infrastructures

Main objective to conduct “Trans-national Future Dialogues”

Future Dialogues have diverse themes proposed by the members : From energy to nutrition..

For the next period GRNET proposed the theme of “e-Infrastructures towards Innovation”

Document existing national scenarios/visions for e-Infrastructures
3 workshops anticipated (from Feb 2006 to Fall 2006) with the participation of :

foresight experts from different EU countries having worked on the national, regional or
corporative level of foresight in ICT

e-Infrastructures experts from different EU countries working in the public or private area
with a strong future oriented perspective (possibly involved within e-IRG)

policy makers of public or private bodies from different EU countries dealing with the setup,
management and implementation of foresight processes.
e-Infrastructure Foresight example dialogue
issues
How can e-infrastructures drive the cross border development of hybrid technologies such as bio-informatics,
nanotechnologies, earth observation, precision farming, etc
How multidisciplinary requirements could be best met through translational co-operation enabled by e-infrastructures
What are the visions/scenarios behind the national ongoing or planned activities
What are the central visions and scenarios to be explored in a future translational foresight exercise
What are the systemic and institutional changes needed to take effect in order to bring e-infrastructures closer to national
and European wide innovation systems
What are the national research and innovation policy implications towards serving scientific multidisciplinarity through e-
infrastructures
How further expansion of broadband and optical networking to companies, governments, institutes and organisations
could forge a relationship between e-Infrastructure and innovation on the long term
How the grater economic and social context surrounding scientific exploration will affect the development of e-science
and change the way we do science and innovation in general
What is the impact of e-infrastructures on the organisation and functioning of science
e-IRG and ForSociety complementarities -
Possible cooperation with the e-IRG

Forsociety foresight studies are similar to the long-term e-IRG
roadmaps
e-IRG roadmaps focus on consulting the EC to future directions
Foresight focuses on stimulating synergies between national
authorities into transnational programmes
Possible cooperation:

e-IRG experts participate in the Foresight workshops
Joint e-IRG – Foresight workshops during Austrian presidency
e-IRG officially comments the Foresight documents
