From the Principal
Welcome to our third newsletter for 2012. College life offers so much more
than just classroom based learning and this edition showcases some of the
many other activities on offer including the recent Health Fest and Careers
Expo. We also celebrate the talents of our Performing Arts students in
both the pre-tertiary Drama performances and the annual College Musical
Production. Sweeney Todd was an outstanding example of what can be
achieved when staff and students work together on a real life project.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this exciting production and to
all the other students who have been recognised for their community,
sporting, cultural and academic achievements.
Hobart College is well known for its multiculturalism and regular exchange
programs and international study tours. The whole college community
was immersed in the culture of several countries during our very successful
inaugural Languages Week. At the end of first term, a group of excited students and staff visited Fuzhou Number
8 Middle School, our sister school in China. The group returned with many stories about their experiences and a
deeper appreciation of life in another culture. We are looking forward to hosting a return study tour from Fuzhou in
early August as well as two Japanese groups from Kagawa and Ritsumeikan.
The Mid-Year Assessment Period (MYAP) begins on Monday 23 July 23 until Tuesday 31 July. The examinations, tests
and practical assessments undertaken during MYAP are important milestones in the academic year. For pre-tertiary
subjects they provide students with the opportunity to experience formal exam conditions and are a valuable learning
experience for students to reflect on the specific areas they need to improve on over the rest of the year. Although
exams can be daunting, there is lots of support available to help students with their preparation. Encourage your son/
daughter to talk to their Home Group Teacher about planning their study time and to take advantage of the subject
tutorials.
The AGM for the Hobart College Association was held in May and we welcomed some new parent, community and
student members. There will be a regular report on association activities in future newsletters and there will be a
Special General Meeting on Wednesday, 18 July at 7pm to consider proposed changes to the Constitution. Everyone
is welcome to attend and please contact me for more information.
In conclusion, I would like to stress that it is really important to us that every student feels connected and supported
as a member of our college community. We value our partnership with parents and if you ever have any concerns,
please contact us and we will do our best to help.
Farewell jim morris
Hobart College is sad to see
Jim leaving after 30 years
of incredible service on the
campus. Jim is the last teacher
at the College to have started
his career at Letitia Street
before the move to Mt Nelson.
Following a few years in the
legal profession, Jim decided
it wasn’t for him and moved into librarianship and then
teaching. He has, to date, taught more Legal Studies
students in Tasmania than any other teacher. He has been
instrumental in developing the Legal Studies course statewide
and he is remembered with great affection by all
his students as an outstanding educator. Jim is looking
forward to a fly fishing - filled retirement.
Welcome troy williams
After just a year with us, Nigel
McBrien has moved on to other
employment and we have been
joined by Troy Williams who will
work in the chaplaincy role for
2 days each week. Troy has an
extensive background in youth and
disability support work and a wellestablished
knowledge of many of
our students from associated high schools gained from
his “other job” of youth worker with the Kingborough
Council. While Troy is employed by the National Schools
Chaplaincy and Student Support Programme, the cost
of any activities he initiates – such as the Wednesday
Breakfasts – are met by specific fundraising within the
College (profits from the Sweeney Todd kiosk and
Entertainment Book sales).
The National Schools Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program is funded by the Federal Government to support the wellbeing of
students including stengthening values, providing pastoral care and enhancing engagement with the broader community. Student
participation in the program is by self-referral and voluntary by nature.
