Welcome to the summer edition of the Croydon
Chamber Newslink. Although we are faced with
key economic challenges both locally, nationally and
internationally, we are also presented with
opportunities to take our business further.
The current recession will see a number of businesses
changing focus and direction to ensure these opportunities
are not only realised but seized upon for the future well
being of the business. Our job at the Chamber is to help
support you and your business in taking those opportunities.
Many businesses are taking the international trade route,
re-focusing their efforts, changing direction or expanding
their activities to take advantage of the current economic
climate. By entering new markets, businesses have the
chance to grow their business on a completely different
level and in some cases the success has been phenomenal.
There are eighteen emerging markets listed by UK Trade
and Investment including China,India,Mexico and Vietnam.
South Africa is another emerging market with the arrival
of the World Cup in 2010 boosting their economic
opportunities. Not only are there real benefits to exploring
these markets, businesses must also look towards linking
up with the London Games in 2012.
To support businesses in meeting the right contacts,
developing the right leads and ultimately doing business,
the Chamber runs a series of trade missions. Our trade
missions in conjunction with UK Trade & Investment London
are designed to ensure you go in with your eyes open,
understanding the market, the culture and the opportunities
available. Our trade missions are also in place to ensure
you meet the key names with meetings arranged to allow
you to proactively develop your list of contacts.
With an active World Trade team in place at London
Chamber of Commerce and support freely available at
Croydon Chamber of Commerce, our role is quite simply
to help you succeed wherever you do business.
The London Games is another key area for you to consider
as a potential business opportunity. The Chamber is a key
partner, working to support businesses to achieve and win
more tenders and grow their business as a result.Working
with CompeteFor and the London Business Network we
are leading the way in making sure you have all the
information you need.
London’s business community has the capability to support
the London Games – whichever level that may be. By
registering on www.competefor.com, you and your
business has the opportunity to get involved. The London
Games tendering scheme will operate on a supply chain
basis with many of the larger companies winning the larger
contracts. With much of the delivery of the contract being
sub contracted out to smaller companies, we all have a
chance to win at the London Games. All you have to do
is get involved.
A great example of international business success comes
from Rowland Brothers. They are a well known local funeral
directors who have expanded to the international markets.
They have achieved remarkable success internationally,
winning many awards for their work.
Why not take time out of your busy schedule to consider
other markets – it could be the best decision you ever
make. For further support, advice and help on developing
your business internationally, please contact the Chamber
The Seeds
of Economic
Growth
have been
Planted
The economy continues to dominate the landscape nationally
and locally with attentions turning to how we aim to resolve
the business issues facing us today. Croydon is one local
borough getting to grips with the challenges we are under.
The Economic Development Company is one
vehicle being used to facilitate growth in the
local economy and the two men tasked with
leading the new organisation were
appointed in the last month.
Barry Rourke has been
appointed as the new Chair
of the organisation with
Antony Kildare as its
Chief Executive.
Barry has significant boardroom experience
and broad business and industry knowledge, particularly
in the construction, engineering and natural resource sectors,
in the UK and internationally. Barry, who lives locally in
Purley, is an independent member of the Audit Committee
for the Department for Business,Enterprise and Regulatory
Reform, and a board member for Columbus Corp, a New
York based acquisitions company. He is also a non executive
director of Surrey and Borders Partnership Foundation
Trust, and from 1984-2001 was a Partner at PWC.
Welcoming the appointment panel's decision, Barry, said: "I
am delighted and honoured to be offered what will no
doubt be a stimulating and exciting opportunity to lead this
work for the people of Croydon. I am looking forward to
working with businesses in the borough that have shown
their commitment to staying and growing in Croydon, and
to seeing the positive impact the developments already in
the pipeline will have on residents."
Acting as an advisor to the panel, Croydon Council's Chief
Executive Jon Rouse said."These key roles within Croydon
attracted people with excellent credentials and the Economic
Development Partnership had a field of the highest quality.
The process has been a rigorous one, and the standards
set will be maintained to ensure that the expectations of
our residents and business community are met."
The key role of Chief Executive was swiftly followed with
the appointment of Antony Kildare.
Antony is currently a director with the global professional
services firm Ernst & Young, where he is Director for the
Government and Public Sector business.Having held positions
as the Chief Executive of the EDC Renaissance South
Yorkshire, Executive Director of Economic Development
of East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) and Head
of Enterprise and Skills for Scottish Enterprise,he is extremely
well suited and qualified to lead the economic resurgence
of the borough.
Antony was the Director of the Cox Review of Creativity
in Business which addressed how UK businesses can meet
the challenges of an increasingly competitive business
environment. He chaired the RDA (Regional Development
Agency) Enterprise Directors’ Forum and has a business
background in tourism,leisure,entertainment,manufacturing
and financial services.
He said:“I am looking forward to coming to Croydon
to work with the Board and the business community
in the borough. Croydon has been very effective at
building strong partnerships between business and
public sector organisations, and I am keen to see those
relationships achieve greater benefit for the borough.”
Welcoming his appointment, Cllr Steve O’Connell, one
of the joint chairs of Croydon’s Economic Development
Partnership said:“With Antony’s appointment we now have
two exceptionally talented leaders in place who will give
the EDC solid foundations.Antony’s wealth of experience
and achievement in economic development in parts of the
country such as the East Midlands and Yorkshire where
there have been tremendous changes in industry and
employment will be invaluable.”
To ensure the new EDC’s credibility with Croydon’s business
community, and to maximise its effectiveness, it is an
independent private sector-led company.
The economic development company will takeover Croydon
Business in the coming weeks, and work will begin apace
on finalising the new business plan and ensuring structures
are fit for purpose once Tony is in post. .The new organisation
will include other support bodies including the Croydon
Business Improvement District, ENVIBE and Croydon
Enterprise.
The London Chamber is one of the 5 founding members
of the Company, and is looking forward to working with
Antony, Barry and their team in supporting and growing
the local business community.
Matthew Sims,General Manager of Croydon Chamber said:
“We have a great chance of making business support in the
borough of Croydon clearer with less duplication. Our
intention as a Chamber is to support the EDC in their
activities and vice versa to ensure growth for our businesses
in this tough time. This is a great opportunity – one that
the Chamber is relishing.
An Enterprising
New Way
to Work
Small and medium businesses (SMEs) looking to reduce travel costs, increase productivity, improve their
appeal to current and potential employees and raise their corporate social responsibility (CSR) profile are
turning to Enterprise, a free workplace travel planning scheme.
Created by Transport for London (TfL) especially for the Capital’s SME sector, Enterprise aims to help organisations make
better use of London’s transport system through the development of a workplace travel plan - a business management tool
focused on improving access to your site and delivering a range of organisational benefits. It enables staff, visitors and customers
to make sustainable travel choices with confidence alongside increasing efficiency within your organisation.
One of the key factors behind the scheme is its commitment to professional support throughout the process. “We have
professional, experienced and enthusiastic travel planners and marketing personnel all focused on this project,” explains
Seltrans Travel Plan Coordinator,Sarah Cummings. “Each travel plan is tailor-made for every business,to meet their individual
transport concerns, travel needs and location. The recommendations included, which are developed in consultation with
each business, are then implemented through a variety of measures supported by the Enterprise team, including access to
funding.”
Businesses keen on developing a workplace travel plan can look forward to receiving up to £5,000 match funding for the
implementation of sustainable measures, the provision of 20 free cycle stands, 40% off Raleigh Pool Bikes, free marketing
material and merchandise for promotion to staff, and access to the Enterprise scheme.
Want to Know
How to Sell
When it comes to sales your customers quite literally
have all the answers. Have you ever answered a
question with a question Would that make a
difference to your conversion rate The answer to
the latter is most definitely yes!
Asking questions not only increases your conversion rate,
but builds rapport with your customer and ensures that
the sale becomes their idea and not yours.Asking questions
also means active listening. You can ask questions about
your customers work, business, kids or hobbies but make
sure that you are listening with sincere interest. It may even
be helpful to note down some of the answers – such as
the names of their kids, interests etc for future
communication. By asking questions and listening, you are
building rapport and attaching importance to their
conversation.
4 Croydon News
Also, by asking questions you are remaining in control of
the conversation.Once you find yourself doing all the talking
you are no longer in control.Just remember that the person
asking questions sets the direction for the conversation. If
the customer is dominating the conversation by asking you
questions, make sure you answer the question with a
question. However, try to vary the questions that you ask.
You may remember from looking after your own children
or babysitting that being asked “but why” over and over
again tends to get a little monotonous.Questions can guide
consumer interest, discover a need and give accurate
information. There are two commonly known types of
questioning – open ended and closed questions.
Open-ended questions are an excellent way to ensure
customer involvement in the conversation and are key to
identifying not only what they need but a lot about themselves.
You can use open-ended questions to build rapport,to find
a need, to discover a customer problem and find the right
solution. In journalism there are six key questions used in
the interviewing process which are equally useful in sales
– who, what, where, when, why and how. Here are a few
examples of open-ended questions which are very useful:
Who are you buying the product/service for How often
would you use the product/service What features were
you looking for in this product/service This type of
questioning yields a lot of great information from your
customer and helps you determine which product/service
is uniquely suited to them.
Closed questions tend to get one word answers “yes” or
“no”.They can be used to gather information quickly – not
unlike a check-list. Using closed questions can also confirm
a buying detail and help confirm the sale.By using questions
you are encouraging the customer to communicate, building
rapport,establishing their needs,directing the conversation,
diffusing tension and inviting discussion. Learning the art of
questioning and listening is the key to increasing your
conversion rate and creating a continuing customer
relationship. If you would like to learn more on how to
improve the selling skills in your business then call your
local business coach Andrew Glen at ACTION International
on +44 (0)20 8288 3583 for a complimentary coaching
session or free ticket to his “5 Ways to Grow Your Business”
seminars.

Croydon Park Hotel
Croydon Park Hotel
Web: www.croydonparkhotel.com
Just three minutes away from busy East Croydon
station lies one of Croydon’s best loved hotels – The
Croydon Park Hotel.
I was made to feel very welcome by the staff at reception
who ensured my check in was swift with as little fuss as
possible. My restaurant booking was confirmed and I was
directed to the lift. I was lucky enough to be staying in one
of the new Executive Suites on the 5th floor of the hotel.
This floor has recently been refurbished and I was impressed
with the modern, tasteful décor of muted natural tones and
occasional splashes of colour.
My room was large and peaceful. There was no noise from
outside as the windows are all double glazed and the room
faced out onto a quiet courtyard. After unpacking my bag
and checking out the coffee making facilities for the morning
and the television channels for later I headed off down to
Oscar’s Restaurant for dinner.
I was welcomed by friendly staff into the restaurant and taken
straight to my table. It was starting to become apparent that
the friendly staff that greeted me when I first arrived were
not a one off or part of a welcome committee, but that every
member of staff here is intent on making you feel extremely
welcome.
Oscar’s is well known for its four course gourmet buffet and
as buffet style would not normally be my choice for dinner,
I was most looking forward to trying out something new.
The restaurant was busy and undoubtedly popular with
families, couples and other groups and I was soon to discover
why.
The selection of food available at the buffet is quite amazing.
I opted for fresh seafood to start which included my favourites
– king prawns and smoked salmon. To accompany the fish I
chose asparagus and fresh salad.
After a light starter I was ready for the main course. There
was something for everyone with options of meat, chicken,
fish and vegetarian. I chose the chicken which was served in
a really tasty barbeque type sauce. To accompany the chicken
I had mash and roast potatoes (I did only have fish and salad
to start!) and lots of green vegetables.
I wouldn’t normally go for dessert but after casting my eye
over what was available earlier, I had purposely left some
room! I was toying between the pecan pie or ice cream with
fresh warm fruit (I was told by a lovely lady to have both!)
but I went for the pecan tart – and I am glad I did! The
homemade tart was delicious and accompanied my coffee
perfectly.
Feeling suitably satisfied after my meal and one or two glasses
of wine I was off to bed.
The following morning,my great ambitions to get up and use
the gym facilities never materialised and so I was left to go
straight to breakfast before checking out and saying goodbye.
My stay at Croydon Park Hotel was only brief but in the
short time I was there I was looked after wonderfully by all
the staff. The hotel is a little dated but immaculately clean
and very well presented. I would definitely stay here again –
if only for the buffet! And if it is a central location that you
are looking for with great transport links to London and
Gatwick then this is definitely one to consider.
The Two Minute
Interview
4. Which one business achievement over the last 12 months are you most proud of and
why
There are so many exciting developments taking place at Lingfield Park and the success of
such major business development plans depends upon Lingfield Park employees’ ability to
adapt and respond to changing business conditions and job role demands.
This process is ongoing but I am already very proud of how positively the team has reacted
to the challenge over the last few months. By continuing to work together we can look
forward to further success and the opportunities this will bring to Lingfield Park.
5. If there is one thing I hate about my job its …
It’s not being able to do everything I would like as quickly as I want to.
6. If you were advising a young entrepreneur which business person would you suggest
as a model
My advice would be to follow any business person who is prepared to back their judgement
and ideas, ignore the doubters, take risk where necessary but who never loses site
of how important people are along the way.
7. If you could change one thing in your business what would it be and why
The British weather, despite our All Weather track and facilities for every eventuality, so
much depends on whether its rain or shine!
1. Who are you
Philip Pride, Commercial Director, Lingfield Park Racecourse
Lingfield Park is a venue offering breathtaking views, racing all year round, fine
dining, state-of-the-art conference and meeting facilities, an 18 hole golf course
and the site of a new 116 bedroom, four star, Marriott Hotel, which will open
in spring 2010.
2. What is your connection with the Croydon Chamber of Commerce
We first joined as Members in 2004. We believe the Croydon Chamber of
Commerce is a robust organisation promoting the interests of business within
the Croydon area. This of course provides valuable networking opportunities
and a chance to exchange ideas and best practice, especially in these challenging
economic times.
8. If you were Mayor of London for a day, what would be the first thing you
would change
Run the buses in the snow!
9. What does the future hold for your business and how do you intend to capitalise on
that
With such a great venue that is in the middle of a fantastic development project, the future
for our business is one of opportunity and therefore it is imperative we focus on this and
capitalise on the position we find ourselves in. This benefits both our customer and our
business and so I believe anything new we try must be without fear of failure.
3. Where did the original concept of your business come from
Our business is more than 100 years old and at its heart is Lingfield Park Racecourse
which is now the busiest racecourse in Europe. This is largely due to
our All Weather Polytrack which enables us to stage meetings regardless of the
weather, something that has been a huge asset so far in 2009.
With over 100 years of history and successful business behind us we are now
planning for the future with our four star Marriott Hotel due to open next year.
This will mean Lingfield Park will be a truly unique resort as the only hotel,
racecourse and golf resort in the UK, offering a great experience for both corporate
and leisure break customers.
