This April the main campus was filled with activity as
eight teams, of up to 60 students each, competed in Great
Race 2010. There was victory for the two newest teams
formed this year. The Bomb Squad won the overall Great
Race competition and the SAW Warriors earned the Spirit
of the Race trophy.
Alumni who attended Great Race 2010 had an outstanding time! We had a wonderful
evening getting reacquainted on Friday at the home of Linda Kay and JP Jones hosted
by Dr. and Mrs. Counts. The race was held on Saturday this year for the very first time
and it was unanimous that Saturday was better for everyone. We put alumni to work as
pit crew judges and timers. The races were fun and exciting with the waterhole close
enough to the finish line that most people were able to see both.
The “Vegas style” social at Isaac’s after the race was fabulous. We had “live” entertainment
by alumni Antonio Zapata and Kim Jensen who impersonated Vegas stars,
and alumnus Stan Gerson performed card tricks. We also enjoyed WNMU trivia by
alumni Guadalupe Cano and Aaron Rogers along with showgirls, clowns, photographers,
karaoke and more.
The University is excited about our newly formed chapter in Luna County with Oscar
Chavez serving as president and in Dona Ana County where Abe Armendariz will be
forming a new chapter. We are also looking forward to starting chapters in Lordsburg,
Gallup and TorC. For more information please call the alumni office at 575.538.6675.
The Annual WNMU Indiana Chapter Meeting took place the last weekend in June.
Chapter President Joe Moore conducted the meeting and 22 alumni attended. The
chapter raised a much needed $1,000 during the meeting to support Alumni Affairs
events planning.
The Albuquerque Chapter met in Albuquerque on July 17 at the home of chapter
president, Rosina Romero. Adam Clark, the new WNMU head football coach, was the
special guest along with Matthew Lara from WNMU Admissions.
The Office of Alumni Affairs held a special “WNMU Alumni Meet & Greet” in Tucson
at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort on July 22, reuniting friends and classmates.
Homecoming 2010 is scheduled for October 15 through 17. New this year, the Office
of Alumni Affairs will feature “The Team of the Year” which will be honored during
homecoming activities as well as having their team photo displayed in the Brancheau
Gallery. The teams of the year for 2010 are the 1958 and 1959 track teams. We will
also have a ribbon cutting of the Veteran’s Wall in the Brancheau Gallery.
WNMU Alumni Affairs will be honoring Mr. Joe Moore of the Indiana Chapter as
Outstanding Alumni Ambassador and the Ogas Family, 1940s to present, at our Homecoming
2010 festivities. Congratulations to Mr. Moore
and the Ogas’! Thank you for your many contributions
to Western New Mexico University.
President’s Message
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Dear Alumni,
Tough financial times persist for our great country and state with
no end in sight. But, despite hard times, your university continues
on its successful journey.
Finances notwithstanding, the 2009-10 academic year was a
great year: enrollment at an all time high, new graduate programs,
over 650 high school students dual-enrolled in both high
school and WNMU in the spring semester, over 1700 students
took at least one on-line course last year - a sign of the times,
165 displaced workers were preparing for new careers, and our
first cohort of students from China enriched campus life. We
now have students from 18 countries.
On the fields of friendly strife, the spring season was one of the
best in WNMU sports history. Four of our five teams made it to
the post-season and three of them made it to the nationals: men’s
golf finished seventh and women’s golf finished 12th in the
nation. Men’s tennis was undefeated in both the RMAC and regional’s
before losing in the national tournament. Softball won
RMAC’s west region and competed in the RMAC post-season,
and Women’s Tennis finished a respectable third place in the
RMAC. Tennis coach Eric Burton was RMAC Co-coach of the
year and many students received athletic and academic honors –
it was a great season!
Once again our students made the Great Race great, and our
student government really shined throughout the year.
Outside of the classroom, throughout last year, in our wonderful
community, WNMU students and faculty members increased
their participation in service learning projects. I am particularly
impressed by the establishment of a new community garden on
the campus, and applaud their enthusiasm and hard work on and
off campus. Students are the reason
we exist and are a constant source
of WNMU pride and joy.
The Western Institute for Lifelong
Learning (WILL) has really taken
off and is also a source of pride.
WILL offers a lifetime adventure
for continued intellectual discovery
in a supportive, expansive and informal
learning environment for those 50 years or older or eager
learners of any age. The faculty are volunteer’s from throughout
the community and WNMU, and the classes are a rich mix of
offerings ranging from cooking to ancient history. The cost is
minimal and the several hundred folks availing themselves of
this wonderful opportunity are a testament to its great success.
We are really looking forward to being with you at homecoming
on October 16, against Adams State.
A highlight of your visit will be sharing our brand new $6 million
nursing facility – it is beautiful!
Also later in the academic year we eagerly anticipate the arrival
of a life-size bronze sculpture of our mascot, the Mustang,
which is a gift from a distinguished Chinese citizen and friend
who loves America and WNMU.
Thanks to each and everyone for your loyal support. Barbara
and I will be visiting several alumni chapters as the year progresses
where we will give a more complete update. In the
meantime we continue to wish you great success, health, and
happiness.
Go Mustangs and Lady Stangs!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Greetings fellow Mustangs,
The year 2010 has been an exciting
year for all of our WNMU alumni.
Slowly but surely alumni chapters
are beginning to form and meet
continuously. I often hear of how
our alumni chapters gather to enjoy
old Western stories.
I first want to thank our Grant County alumni, as they have been
a very active group making it exciting for other chapters to come
down to visit WNMU. As the “host” chapter they have stepped
up to the plate in welcoming other chapters.
I want to congratulate everyone that has been involved in helping
to develop our Tucson and Luna County chapters. They have
held several social events during the summer. I would also like
to give a round of applause to our Indiana chapter as they have
held their annual event once again and going strong.
I would like to congratulate Joe Moore, President of the Indiana
Chapter, for being named our Outstanding Alumni and the Ogas
family for being named our Distinguished Alumni Ambassadors.
I look forward to seeing everyone this fall on October 15-17
during our alumni homecoming activities.
Go Mustangs!!!
Vance Redfern
Dear Fellow Alumni,
How long has it been since you
visited the WNMU campus We
moved back to Silver City in
2003 to retire and found that the
campus has made giant strides
with new physical facilities that
are remarkable. You need to see
it.
It is our pleasure to invite you and all other alums to return to
the campus and enjoy this year’s homecoming activities on
the weekend of October 16 as the Mustangs host academic
experiences and athletic events in football and volleyball for
your enjoyment. In addition, touring the campus and seeing
the vast improvements in the structures and sites of the community
of Silver City.
We can all find excuses for not returning to homecoming, but
time is running out for many of us to enjoy the WNMU atmosphere
once again. The collegiate experience will never be
duplicated, but returning to the campus will enhance the recall
of those exciting days once again. You deserve to have those
enjoyments now.
WNMU gave us the opportunity to select our future vocations,
gave us the knowledge to be prepared for the changes in our
lives, and gave us the encouragement to be successful in whatever
we chose. It’s time to return and give back to WNMU
our success stories.
See you on the weekend of October 16!
Sincerely,
Vance Redfern, BA ‘63, MA ‘70
Alumn’s small businesses
Are a family affair
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
against anyone else’s,” he added.
For Maynes, his college education
and the strive for excellence he
learned from his father have kept
him motivated to be a success for his
children and community.
Domingo Maynes (B.S. ‘78) is a
numbers man. He’s an independent
agent for Farmers Insurance with
three locations in New Mexico; two
in Deming and one in Silver City.
He owns and operates two restaurants,
one car wash and one amusement
center.
Most importantly for him, he has 14
children.
“My dad had 14,” said Maynes. “I
would like one more.”
Maynes is always looking ahead, a
trait he has used to become a successful
father and business owner.
Today, 32 years after earning his
bachelor’s degree in business at
WNMU, Maynes is still planning for
the future.
“I tell my sons that I’m still competitive,”
said Maynes.
The entrepreneur’s competitive spirit
has earned him high recognition in
his field of work.
For 27 consecutive years, every year
since he became an independent
agent for Farmers Insurance, Maynes
has earned the Top Auto Sales Agent
recognition in New Mexico.
“I don’t like to say that I’m the best
insurance agent,” said Maynes.
Maynes pictured in 1978
as a senior at WNMU.
“I’m still outselling everybody in the
state – still leading,” said Maynes.
Being a top insurance agent hasn’t
kept Maynes from leading in other
areas.
The businessman owns The Sugar
Shack, a popular family restaurant
in Bayard, New Mexico and recently
purchased Sunrise Kitchen, a breakfast
and lunch diner in Deming.
Maynes credits his education for his
success throughout
the last 30 years.
“Western, in my experience,
has always
had excellent educators,”
said Maynes.
“The classes were
challenging, but they
did prepare me.”
“My dad required from us, back in
the 1960s, a high school diploma,”
said Maynes. “I tell my kids to get
a college degree and I’ll leave them
alone.”
At least once in their lives, Mayne’s
children have earned their business
experience.
“All of the boys have sold snow
cones,” said Maynes who built a
snow cone stand for his children to
earn some sweat equity while they
were growing up.
“They learned how to talk to people
and gain communication skills,” said
Maynes.
Several of Maynes’ children, 10 sons
and four daughters, are in the insurance
field; othes are in the financial,
business and medical worlds, while
the youngest is in grade school.
Of all his businesses, Maynes is
proudest of Mingo’s Party Place in
Bayard.
His results speak for themselves.
6 Fall 2010 Alumni Bulletin
Bayard area youth gather for a
teen dance at Mingo’s Party Place.

The amusement center, with
a skating rink, food counter
and entertainment center is
named after his father.
“I have always liked the
amusement industry,” said
Maynes. “People need to
have fun.”
Summer teen dances at Mingo’s
offer youth an entertainment
option in the small town
of Bayard. The facility is
The Sunrise Kitchen restaurant is housed in the
same plaza as Maynes Insurance in Deming.
also used for private parties.
Somehow there remains
room on the family man’s
plate. Maynes intends to
continue and grow in numbers.
“I formed a corporation, and
I do plan to invest in other
business enterprises – food
services, amusement and
others,” said Maynes.
Preparing future Business Leaders
***
The School of Business Administration and Economics
at WNMU is leading the way in educating the business
leaders of tomorrow.
Five degrees, including two newly restructed degrees,
are offered to students who are looking to enter the
world of finance, accounting or management.
The MBA program is graduating students who are successfully
landing jobs in the public and private sectors.
Outside of the classroom, the student experience is
enriched with lectures throughout the year by accomplished
alumni.
WNMU’s Silver City campus conveniently houses the
Small Business Development Center, which offers free
services to students, alumni and community members
who are interested in opening their own businesses or
need guidance with their current enterprises.
Each year, students operate the Voluntary Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) program in conjunction with Tax
Help New Mexico.
In 2010, seven accounting students volunteered to provide
free income tax preparation services to low income,
elderly, disabled and limited English speaking people.
Individuals with an income of $50,000 or less were eligible
for the service.
In 2010, the VITA program filed 1,231 tax returns for
the 2009 tax year. This service brought back $577,889
to the community.
Currently, more than 40 WNMU employees hold degrees
from the School of Business and work in departments
ranging from Business Affairs to the Early Childhood
Programs.
1958 and 1959 track & field teams to be honored
It is tradition in many households to have football part of
the Thanksgiving meal.
WNMU repeated its conference title the next year after very
stiff competition. The purple and gold defeated the University
of Wyoming, New Mexico State University three times,
Texas Western College (now the University of Texas – El
It is also tradition to throw your baseball cap onto the ice at
a hockey game when someone scores three goals in a single
contest.
And how many times have you sung “Take Me Out to the
Ball Game” at a baseball game
Sports have tradition, and WNMU will now have a tradition
to honor sports.
The WNMU Office of Alumni Affairs will honor past athletic
teams during homecoming. At Homecoming 2010, the
1958 and 1959 track and field teams will be recognized.
the process. Tom Cudney tossed the shot put 48 feet 1 inch.
Mustangs ready for new coach, new year
The Western New Mexico athletic
director Scott Woodard announced in
May that Adam Clark had been promoted
to head football coach of the
Mustang program.
“We were excited to have Adam join
our staff as defensive coordinator in
February and are thrilled to have him
now as the head coach,” said Woodard.
“He has a very impressive resume and
has come from some very successful
programs. We can’t wait for him
to lead the Mustangs into the 2010
season.”
Clark has won eight or more games
nine out of the last 10 years at the
college level. He has also won seven
conference championships and had
two runner-up conference finishes as a
player and as a coach during that span.
Clark came to WNMU after backto-back
second place finishes in the
RMAC at the Colorado School of
Mines where he was the defensive line
coach and strength and conditioning
coordinator.
Clark helped build the Orediggers to
an RMAC powerhouse, finishing just
one game behind conference champions
the University of Nebraska-Kearney
last season. While at Mines, Clark
coached the RMAC Defensive Player
of the Year and three all-conference
defensive linemen selections in 2009.
The team also finished ranked in the
top 25 in the nation in run defense the
past two seasons. Mines head coach
Bob Stitt credited Clark’s strength
program as a major season for Mines’
success.
Prior to Mines, Clark spent the 2007
season as the defensive coordinator/
assistant head coach at St. Ambrose
University, where Clark was selected
ranking of No. 9 in the country.
Clark also spent three seasons (2004-
2006) as the defensive secondary and
strength and conditioning coach at
Graceland University. In 2005, the
Jackets finished 9-3, won the school’s
first conference championship in 30
years, and advanced to their first-ever
national playoff. Clark also coached
the Defensive Player of the year in the
Heart of America Conference in 2005.
A 2002 graduate of St. Ambrose University,
Clark earned his bachelor’s degree
in sociology. Clark, who went on
to earn his master’s degree in organizational
leadership from St. Ambrose,
also served as a graduate assistant for
his alma mater from 2002-2004.
Clark was a two-year letterwinner on
the St. Ambrose football team during
his undergraduate career. During
his time with the Fighting Bees,
Clark raked in all-conference and
all-American honors. Prior to attending
St. Ambrose, Clark played football
at Grossmont Junior College for two
years, earning all-conference and allstate
accolades.
“I am extremely excited to have the
opportunity to be the head football
coach at WNMU,” said Clark. “I see
so much potential in this program, and
I believe we will turn this program into
something the entire WNMU community
and Silver City will be proud of.”
FACT SHEET
2010 Education Bond D
Capital Improvements for Higher Education Facilities
General: The General Obligation Bond for Education, also known as Bond D, is placed on the ballot in
November every two years by the New Mexico State Legislature. This year’s election is on November 2,
2010.
Allocation: Under Bond D, the 2010 bond cycle will allocate $155.2 million for capital improvements at
colleges and institutions of higher education throughout the state of New Mexico. These capital improvements
refer to upgrades of existing buildings and/or equipment and the construction of new educational
buildings/facilities.
Impact at Western New Mexico University/Grant County $5.5 million
Projects under consideration using GO Bond Funding:
Renovation of WNMU Museum
Renovation of Light Hall
Renovation of the Fine Arts Complex
Design, construct, equip and furnish infrastructure at the Silver City campus
Cost to taxpayers: Bond D is funded by property taxes collected by the State of New Mexico. Citizens will
pay an average of $9.98 per year for a home with an assessed property value of $100,000.
Economic benefit: It is estimated that a multiplier of 3 to 5 times the amount of funding received by an
institution can be used to estimate how the larger community (i.e. contractors, suppliers, etc.) will be
impacted by the bond. In addition, students benefit from enhanced and revamped technology and facilities,
and improved educational environments equate to better students, more graduates and a highlyskilled
workforce for New Mexico.
Invest in New Mexico’s Future: With so many recent education cuts, it’s time to take charge and support
higher education in New Mexico. Voting on Education Bond D will help improve the aging infrastructure
of colleges and universities. Investing in higher learning creates a better workforce, more opportunities
and improves our economy.
