Locating toilets<br />
• Toilets can be located with access from the pavement but not occupying the clear<br />
footpath zone.<br />
• Toilets such as the one located on the corner of K Dubash Marg is built in the middle<br />
of the pavement. In such cases it is advisable that the pavement is widened around the<br />
toilet to maintain the width of the pedestrian path.<br />
Way forward<br />
1) There are 6 public drinking water fountains in the fort.<br />
Many more public drinking water fountains need to be<br />
provided in the suggested localities in utility zones of<br />
pavement or other appropriate spaces.<br />
Water fountains need to be located in the following<br />
areas:<br />
1) Oval Maidan<br />
2) Cross Maidan<br />
3) Azad Maidan<br />
(Repair and renew existing pyav)<br />
4) Crawford Market<br />
(Repair and renew existing pyav)<br />
5) Near MCGM offices<br />
6) At Flora Fountain<br />
7) Prince of Wales Museum<br />

2) Renovating Heritage pyaavs - Heritage pyaavs that<br />
are neglected and disused should be conserved and<br />
renovated and brought back into public use. These<br />
traditional piyaos are a heritage sensitive answer to the<br />
need for water fountains in the fort precinct.<br />

Way forward<br />
1) Ensure that toilets are not an obstruction on the pavement.<br />
2) Implement a stronger cleaning and maintenance regime<br />
for the toilets that have already been built.<br />
3) Provide new toilets in the locales identified taking into<br />
account the distribution of toilets in Fort. The following<br />
areas have been identified as needing toilets as there<br />
are none in the proximity-<br />
1) Colaba causeway<br />
2) Ballard estate<br />
Reconfigured footpath to allow clear path around<br />
existing toilet and reorganised pavement elements<br />
3) Bazaargate<br />
4) Bombay stock exchange<br />
